Friday, March 30th Meeting – The Nonprofit Commons Field Trip

This week, we ended our meeting by visiting the Nonprofit Commons.

Here's the SLURL

Frank would like:

To reiterate and for those who weren't at the meeting

Please cruise the nonprofit commons and email any problems you find to me, with a short description and coordinates. Coordinates are very important so that I can find the problem and pass it on to the ACS design team.

Types of things we need to look out for include

-scripts not working
-missing sounds/textures/images
-usability problems (doors to small, things hard to use or access,
etc)
-visual imperfections (gaps in joints, flaws in textures, etc)

and any other items of concern

Non Profit Commons in Second Life

Today we were introduced to the nonprofit commons and the offices associated with them. As I've written before, Tech Soup, part of CompuMentor, is helping organize an amazing conglomerate, on Second Life, of nonprofits. The land donor, anshe chung studios, has done an amazing job creating a truly breath taking space.

The donation of the land is significant, but add the amount of programming hours that have gone into the sim and then the $200 or so it costs to maintain per month…well it is an amazing gift.

The commons has an amphitheatre for meetings, events and so forth. As you can see, the space is vast and the environment is pretty amazing.

The office spaces are huge. I'm not sure how we are going to furnish ours without the furniture becoming lost.

I think that the final product will truly rock and will generate lots of attention.

So, stay tuned and be ready to take a step inworld. I think it will be worth it.

The TechSoup Meeting: March 23, 2007

Today we got to see the Nonprofit Commons Space for the first time! The offices are really big and the space is really nice. It is going to be something! Everyone got really excited and started to put dibbs on the corner office.

This Week's Friday Meeting

This weeks meeting was really fun. We had a video crew there filming our meeting for a video that is being created to promote TechSoup space in Second Life.

Tuesday volunteered to be the Nonprofit Commons manager and serve as the liaison between tenants, TechSoup, and ACS.

At the end of the meeting we took a tour of the new space. See us all looking amazed at how big the space is? The offices are huge! The Nonprofit Commons is gonna rock!

Introducing Myself

Greetings!

I am the community manager for TechSoup.org and for this Second Life group of Nonprofits that we are attempting to organize.

I would like to share a brief snapshot of what we are doing and what we have done.

In Brief:

Our most prominent project is the Nonprofit Commons. In this project, we will be donating offices in a nonprofit office complex in SL to Nonprofit orgs and helping them achieve their missions through the SL platform. We plan to launch this in the next month or two. We are waiting for the Anshe Chung Studios design team to deliver the fully outfitted sim to our specifications.

Here are some highlights of what we have done so far:

# We have ongoing weekly Friday meetings where we discuss our various projects in the TechSoup space in Second Life. These meetings occur at 8:30-10am PST.

# We had an exciting mixed-reality event, and you can read all about it here at Beth's Blog

You can see some video (unedited) of it here:

http://worldbridges.info/techsoupvideo/

(When we get it edited, I will post the link to that more easy-to-watch formatted piece)

# We are working on an FAQ for Nonprofits in Second Life with tricks, tips and freebies for new residents. This will be for the Nonprofit Commons residents, and it will be an office in a box for NPOs in SL.

# We have a Nonprofit Directory that will teleport you around to visit other nonprofit organizations in Second Life. This will be redesigned soon, using the web tab in the user profile in SL. We will also have this directory linked from this site.

# We have a google discussion group for our ideas and plans.

# We have our bookmarks and inages saved under the Del.icio.us/technorati/flickr tag NPSL:

http://del.icio.us/tag/npsl

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/npsl

#We have this website (built in drupal)

# To see the images of what this all looks like, check out the flickr tag NPSL, secondlife or techsoup.

We have many other plans, too many to list.

Please see the FAQ on what nonprofits can do in SL

Please see this http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page5902.cfm">interview of a few orgs that are doing good work in-world

Also, please IM me in-world. I am Glitteractica Cookie, and I will be happy to help you. For starters, I recommend that all newbies join the google group and attend the Friday morning meeting.
