Mentor Project: NPC 5th birthday party, September 21, 2012
For Volunteers:
Let's work on this together! If EVERYONE were to sign up for one tiny task, EVERYTHING would be covered. Greeters, for instance, "attend and represent" the NPC at one or more events. Can you commit to attending and representing? Let Zinnia or Ozma or Carmen or Brena (or anyone you know who is already on a team) know how you can help!
We need help!
We are looking for greeters, help with decor, awards, gifts for guests.
- As Zinnia says, "We want to give everyone something to do that they can handle and help with."
- And as Brena says, "Becoming part of event planning is a good way to get involved in the community and help meet monthly hours for the space too." (NPC members are asked to donate volunteer hours each week, in return for their free office space.)
Who Is Doing What and When:
Can you commit to one or more times as a greeter or organizer? Can you suggest speakers and entertainers? Add your name. If you are having trouble adding to this document, contact Ozma Malibu inworld, and/or ozma at asu.edu. It's an open document, but some of the user ids went missing at some point.
We will keep it simple but try to include the different time zones - so, 8:30 AM, 3:30 PM, 8:30 PM, 3:30 AM. (All times are Pacific.)
8:30 AM - Special thank-yous to Glitter and TechSoup, followed by presentations on NPC history, timeline, and Coughran Mayo's insight. Location: Plush.
3:30 PM - Entertainment by DJ DyVerse Steele: Dance, with announcements. Location: Aloft.
I can commit to attending at 3:30 pm and representing the NPC:
8:30 PM - Active Collaborative Community Planning Workshop. Location: Plush. Invites need to be sent out to other community leaders, partners, and team mates.
I can commit to attending at 8:30 pm and representing the NPC:
3:30 AM (Saturday morning 9/22 in California) - Live Entertainment TBA. Location: Aloft. Carmen Littlefawn will try to help (as a greeter?)
I can commit to attending at 3:30 am on the 22nd, and representing the NPC:
Sign up for a team!
If you are having trouble adding to this document, contact Ozma Malibu inworld, and/or ozma at asu.edu.
We will want to assemble the following
teams:
Set-UP/Take DOWN
- Building team so far: Par, Brena, Zinnia, Carmen Littlefawn. And, anyone who is interested in building should IM Brena Benoir with some times and an email address so a meeting can be scheduled soon! Update: Par has already created a space above the main meeting space where the theater can be built ahead of time, and lowered to the ground at party time. He's added an "up" teleporter. He is also creating a similar space on Aloft above the Common Ground area, where we can have social activities and where there will be space for a band if needed.
Security
Greeters
Entertainment
- Contact Zinnia if you have ideas for entertainment
- A specific request from Brena: "Please be looking through old photos, as we get the timeline together, we will be calling for photos from specific events or time periods for the slide show."
Speakers
- Contact Zinnia if you have ideas for speakers
Awards
PR: Getting the word out and getting our partners involved!
- PR team so far: Karaoke for copy editing, Zinnia to make posters and provide a brief heads-up announcement that we can begin to share asap.
Ideas:
Thus far, the following ideas have been discussed:
Theme:
- ALL STARS.
- A star-shaped stage! We will turn the main meeting place into a theater in the round, full of stars!
- Wearable stars! (Bevan's idea.)
- Suggested agenda at 8:30 kickoff: Intros; Opening Remarks; Gratitudes: Entertainment. We will use our main meeting time for NPC history and timeline, with some speakers from the community.
- Other time during the day will focus more on social and networking events, although it would be nice to have a speaker at each time.
- The planned 3:30 am time on Saturday is for overseas members. We have gotten feedback in the past that the times we set weren't very accommodating for them. We will want to coordinate with someone from the overseas members to be sure we include them. We can invite Jacques to speak at the 3:30 am time. Carmen Littlefawn will try to attend at this time. Of course, non-overseas people are welcome to attend at this time if they happen to be awake.
Intros, Opening Remarks, Gratitudes: - Someone to kick the party off at the 8:30 AM. Who do we know that's famous?Philip? Founder of TechSoup? (Shall we ask Oprah?) Kevin Bacon? Danny Glover? etc.
- Some sort of thank-you to Techsoup/Glitter and some nice flowers for Glitter. Also, ask Glitter to say a few words at the kick-off.
- Special awards:
- for the orgs that have been here the longest.
- for the most hours inworld
- Most colorful outfit! We can ask people to dress for a formal event - ball gowns and the like.
Entertainment: - Live music. Ask Junivers Stockholm and Ricky. Buffy can ask Avauntgarde Frequency. LovePhillyChick suggests Disabled singer/songwriter Karen Sheader, who launches a new CD of her work August 23. Ozma knows RL Hopi reggae musician Casper Lomayesva who hasn't been in SL before but always is happy to give free concerts for nonprofits in RL, so if there's a way to do this let Ozma know.
- Live presentations, ideally different at each time. Gentle suggests JWheels Carver, the comedian who they had at IDRAC this year. He uses SL because he can't do his standup comedy from his wheelchair in RL. Buffy points out that any dance show (a Skydancers flyby, Josephine Funke/John Mitchell's NY and ASU dance students) would probably be too laggy.
- Record Breaking Group Hug! While we are dancing, we will try to break the record for number of avis on the group hug. (Since as far as we know there isn't a record yet, we can definitely break it/establish a record.) We will do this at EACH time, and see which time sets the record.
- Group photo!
- Movie screening? Zinnia has ideas.
PR:
- Group pose, a week ahead of time, as part of PR
Gifts for Guests:
- One large gift box with lots of gifts. Example: Zinnia is thinking of jars of paint and superpowers.
- A big notecard giver so people can get info about organizations
Volunteers:
The following have volunteered for specific tasks:
LovePhillyChick - working on music for the first event
Buffy Beale
Zinnia Zauber - will look for a speaker, create the ALL STARS theme, make posters, create an early announcement (asap) that we can begin to share, and be on the building team.
Brena Benoir - building team
Carmen Littlefawn - building team (working on cool gifts), and will try to attend the 3:30 am event on Saturday
Ozma Malibu - will track ideas and put them on the wiki
Sarvana Haaren
Gentle Heron - is willing to train nonSL speakers
Bevan Whitfield - has lots of stars, including wearable stars!
Parhelion - building team
Karaoke - will do copy editing to help with PR
P.S. Let's remember that the party is also in honor of Zinnia, whose enthusiasm and imagination have carried the summer and inspired these festivities!
P.P. S. It's also Bevan's birthday!
