For this Friday’s Nonprofit Commons meeting , we welcome back our friends from Global Kids to talk about a new youth game design contest called: the “Playing 4 Peace” Challenge. Between now and April 30, youth around the country are being challenged to design games promoting peace and the end of war. Learn about Global Kids involvement with serious games and how their teens conceived of this new challenge. Global Kids’ director of the Online Leadership Program Barry Joseph will be our featured speaker. Read his hilarious bio after the agenda!

About Barry Joseph of Global Kids

Four months after Barry Joseph was born, humans first walked on the moon. Three months later, the Internet was born. The first brought us closer to the universe while the second brought us closer to each other. Barry has been pursuing the latter ever since.

People have said many things about Barry. Oprah Winfrey once picked Barry out of a crowd (her audience, in fact) and introduced him as a man who “made a good point,” which he has been repeating ever since (the anecdote, not the point). He has been lauded as “a high-energy, engaging, successful social network nexus and entrepreneur” (unfortunately, in response to a rejected grant proposal) and, most recently, as “witty, a computer nerd, a giver, a role model, and an individual above all else” (within his high school’s alumni magazine, which has an obvious conflict of interest).

Barry is perhaps best defined by his work, which since the invention of the Web has explored the many ways this and other digital mediums can be used to address significant personal and social issues. Barry has directed the Online Leadership Program at Global Kids, Inc. since 2000, helping youth to acquire leadership skills and engage in efforts to address global issues through the production of digital media. Global Kids puts youth voices on both a local and global stage: youth-led online dialogues, video games as a form of youth media, the application of social networks for social good, the educational potential of virtual worlds like Second Life, the educational application of mobile phones and alternative assessments models, and more. At all times, Barry and Global Kids seek to combine youth leadership development and engagement with high-profile digital media projects that support 21st Century Skills and New Media Literacy development.

This short and focused event – 1 day only – will result in the rapid development of interesting concepts and working prototypes that will be developed further by the participating teams back at their desks and at future hack-a-thon events, with ISIS and TechSoup as partners for future product

[09:00] stargrrl: The updates to Facebook brand pages mark one of the biggest overhauls since Facebook created brand pages.

[09:04] Buffy Beale: Bridges for Women do
[09:05] stargrrl: I think the banner is a great place for nonprofits to tell their digital story on Facebook
[09:06] stargrrl: FYI, the dimensions of the banner image are 851×351 pixels
[09:07] stargrrl: Beth Kanter has a Pinterest board with some great examples of nonprofits using powerful photos in the new Timeline layout
[09:07] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): of course she does!
[09:07] Glitteractica Cookie: ooh, do you have the link to that handy?

[09:09] stargrrl: Also, it’s worth mentioning that Facebook has some “don’ts” surrounding cover images that aren’t getting a lot of discussion
[09:10] stargrrl: The most important one is that it’s against Facebook’s Terms of Service to use text on your banner images
[09:10] stargrrl: So if you were thinking of using the banner image for making a call-to-action, you’ll need to try another approach
[09:12] stargrrl: The large banner is also meant to replace applications that are meant to serve as custom landing pages, so that’s out too
[09:12] Glitteractica Cookie: oh, so there will be no more custom landing pages?
[09:12] stargrrl: Since you can’t customize your landing page anymore, you really need to put some thought into the image you’ll be using on your page
[09:13] Glitteractica Cookie: doe this mean that the third party campign apps will no longer work?
[09:14] stargrrl: They will work but not as landing pages. Admins can no longer set another tab or app as the default place viewers see when they get to a Facebook page
[09:14] Ricken Flow: that is a bummer so you cant have the name of your org on the banner for your page 🙁
[09:15] bulaklak: Actually text is okay, it’s just certain types of text that are forbidden
[09:15] bulaklak: A. Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.
B. Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.
C. References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
D. Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.
[09:15] stargrrl: Yes, thanks for clarifying
[09:16] bulaklak: So Ricken you could have your org name, just not website address
[09:16] stargrrl: Pages will have a larger thumbnail area for their logos that will be placed in front of the banner image so it’s not entirely a loss
[09:16] DJ Earnshaw: why would they do something that stupid, other than that they can
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I also wonder how that will be enforced?
[09:19] stargrrl: I’m not sure how they’ll manage to enforce that on every page but given that their Customer Support isn’t very responsive, I would caution organization’s to err on the side of caution

[09:20] bulaklak: She shows examples of text that is okay to use vs. text that is more iffy

[09:21] stargrrl: Also, in other app news – apps will no longer be listed on the left-hand navingation area. They’ll now be featured under the banner image
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Should groups fill in the Timeline history with their orgs history or activities and achievements?
[09:23] stargrrl: Absolutely!
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): sounds time consuming but possibly valuable
[09:24] stargrrl: It’s pretty neat the organizations can mark milestones such as when they were founded.
[09:24] bulaklak: John Haydon made a good point, too, about filling in the history of your org’s cause, as well
[09:25] stargrrl: Another good idea for your Timeline
[09:25] bulaklak: So you can put in milestones related to breakthroughs and advancements in the history of whatever cause or population you support
[09:26] stargrrl: The other nice thing about milestones is that you can add photo and video to add a little more color to what you’re highlighting
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): could be great way to show growth too over time
[09:27] Buffy Beale: these are great tips!
[09:27] stargrrl: Yes, show your organization’s evolution into what it is today.
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): An other questions for Stargrrl about how to use FB effectively for your org?

[09:31] stargrrl: I think the two I listed above are good examples of organizations making the most of Facebook Timeline
[09:31] Hour Destiny: I take it Facebook isn’t very interested in getting feedback from the nonprofity community.
[09:32] stargrrl: Also, outside of the nonprofit world, I like how the New York Times is using Timeline to show milestones in their newspaper’s history

[09:33] stargrrl: Facebook hasn’t done much as far as changes to video sharing, most of the changes are focused on the look of pages and providing administrators with a bigger toolkit to manage their pages

[09:36] stargrrl: The changes to pages are coming whether any of us like it or not and at least this time I have to give Facebook credit for letting admins time to try out and preview the new features

Hello, I am Sarvana Haalan, SL avatar and “business partner” for a very real life person, Sally S. Cherry, MT(ASCP) based in Baltimore, MD. As an independent consultant and instructor, I work as a social media consultant and the Laboratory Consultant for the CDC-sponsored STD/HIV Prevention Training Center at Johns Hopkins located in Baltimore.

We have been involved with computer-based projects and internet marketing since 1996. We enjoy learning new technology related concepts and designing web-based projects. We both get excited about visiting, exploring, networking, and building within the virtual world communities. We started our virtual world explorations as a Metaplace beta tester in April 2009 while occasionally visiting Second Life.
[08:49] Sarvana Haalan: In my earlier years, I was a “lurker” because I was very intimidated by Second Life and some of its residents. So while living at the “Between Homes”, a cozy shelter for homeless avatars, I just visited various Second Life destinations and did my “networking” thing.
[08:50] Sarvana Haalan: A Bit of History
During our time in the 2D world of Metaplace, Sarvana became a very active community member and was selected as a featured creator in August 2009 (http://metaplace.posterous.com/metaplace-featured-creator-sarvana-read-t…). So when Metaplace closed down in January 2010, we migrated to Second Life with a small group of Metaplace friends and started to rebuild our various projects. Thus the rebirth of ‚ÄúReal to Virtual; Virtual to Real‚Äù in Second Life and later expanded into OpenSim.
[08:51] Sarvana Haalan: it was a major adjustment
[08:51] Sarvana Haalan: Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was my initial destination of interest, TechSoup’s Nonprofit Commons soon became my favorite community. It was here where Lizzette Zenovka invited me to my first virtual gala (Relay for Life) and I met Brena who invited me to a Thursday evening event. Both actions made me feel very welcome here… so I stayed and You are stuck with me… LOL, LOL.

[08:52] Sarvana Haalan: Seriously, the positive interaction lead me to want to get more involved in the in-world nonprofit community and to get local nonprofits involved in this amazing collaborative community. When the AIDS service organization where I worked as the Project Manager closed down, I decided to develop a social media capacity building program for nonprofits and business startups.
[08:52] DyVerse Jeffery-Steele (dyverse): I was a dj in metaplace dj’d there a couple of times and did presentation on hiv/aids

[08:53] Sarvana Haalan: I must acknowledge that I got much inspiration and encouragement from my participation in a 2009 Skills Building Institute for HIV Testing and Awareness Day Events and Campaigns: “Mobilized to Succeed” sponsored by AIDS.gov, POZ Magazine, and NAPWA. [08:53] Sarvana Haalan: Our business concept, “Real to Virtual; Virtual to Real” is embodied in our real life and in-world projects. The primary goal of our virtual building projects is to promote, educate, and network within our virtual world communities as well as our real life community. It is felt that any real life project (part or the entire project) can be integrated into a virtual world community to enhance the mission of the organization.
[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: In 2011, I recommended Chayen of Protect Yourself 1, Inc to join the community and the rest is history. (Protect Yourself 1, was a client at the time.) Recently, we are developing and conducting “Real To Virtual; Virtual to Real Workshops” working with a local university. It is hoped that funding can be obtained to assist more local nonprofits because many organizations are unable to the cover the related cost. Although response has been slow, we totally embrace our mission and vision.

[08:55] Sarvana Haalan: The “Virtual to Real” is the networking component of our concept… the networks established in-world are integrated into our real life networks. This has indeed happened with some many awesome networking partners over the years that we have been in-world.
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: The virtual business complex, “SarVana Business Centre” was designed, built and established to serve as the virtual headquarters for SarVana Marketing Network.
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: I look forward to bring more local nonprofits into the NPSL community.
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: Although it was started in Second Life, components of our Real to Virtual; Virtual to Real Project can be found in Second Life, JokaydiaGRID, and most recently Kitely. Our interactive STD/STI Training Laboratory and Community HIV/AIDS Resource Exchange Center are located in CherNetiva @ jokaydiaGrid managed by Sarvana Cherry.

[09:03] Zayn: Since you’re here in Second Life. I’ll tell you in detail where this all starts from…
[09:03] Zayn: Our origins as mentioned above start seven years back. With the creation of “The Tinies”
[09:03] Zayn: in 2005 Kage Seraph was the first to crush a standard Second Life “human” avatar down into a compact size.
[09:03] Zayn: He then overlaid “Prim parts” on the now crushed avatar and created the first “Small” avatar.
[09:03] Zayn: This first avatar was a small robot. He then made the animation overrider/scripts available to anyone wanting to use this method for making small avatars.
[09:03] Zayn: About the same time Wynx here had a DREAM in the real world.. This is a true story..
[09:03] Zayn: TELL EM ITS A TRUE STORY WYNX! 🙂

[09:03] Zayn: K so Wynx was already creating STUFF in Second Life and was selling her content on the grid.
[09:03] Zayn: So she has a REAL dream one night. In this dream she was surrounded by adorable cute little small and upright animals..
[09:03] Zayn: and they loved her!

[09:03] Zayn: She awoke with a start and immediately realized that she HAD TO MAKE THESE ANIMALS in Second Life.
[09:04] Zayn: She contacted Kage Seraph who graciously made his crushing method available to her, and over the next month,
[09:04] Zayn: created the prims, painted textures and further animations that would result in the first of many more small animal avatars.. LIKE US…

[09:04] Zayn: She dubbed her creations “TINIES” and released them to the Second Life Public where they were gobbled up by the users of the grid with much enthusiasm.

[09:04] Zayn: The Tinies became an instant hit.. and it was GOOD! 🙂

[09:04] Zayn: Raglan Shire which was developed as the first Tiny Centric community and series of sims came along a few years later.

[09:04] Zayn: In early 2007, I had been managing several sims that I owned.
[09:04] Zayn: I really had wanted to create a community , and I was already a Tiny avatar myself half of the time.
[09:04] Zayn: A friend who knew Wynx communicated to me that she and her friends who had a shop group together (Extrovirtual) were leaving the sim they had set up their SL business on and were looking for a new Virtual home.
[09:05] Zayn: We set up a meeting and discussed the idea of them moving onto my sims and in April of 2007 Raglan Shire opened its doors as a virtual place and as a COMMUNITY for tinies and friends to explore and become a part of.
[09:05] Zayn: Raglan Shire over the last 5 years has been one of the most dynamic virtual places on the Second Life Grid.
[09:05] Zayn: Spread out over 8 sims, it’s a lush forested setting of varying locales with tiny residential areas, shops and lots and lots of public areas for people to explore and enjoy.
[09:05] Zayn: There are a constant stream of events and activities and the focus from the start has always been about finding ways to bring people together in a friendly and welcoming and fun environment where people can interact, collaborate, be encouraged to create
[09:05] Zayn Till: I repeat, FRIENDLY WELCOMING AND FUN
[09:05] Zayn Till: 🙂
[09:05] Zayn: Its a very fun place. We do a lot of things. People really seem to like it.
[09:05] Zayn: So a few years back we talked and decided that all the things we do on Raglan Shire.. have real life merit.. and the tinies? Well the tinies are just super adorable.. and the backdrop of Raglan Shire? It was a excellent backdrop! We realized that Raglan S
[09:05] Zayn: So Wynx and myself with positive support from our friends formed JAZZ PAWS

[09:06] Zayn: Our goal is to re-imagine the Tinies and the World of Raglan Shire and present it to the rest of the world..
[09:06] Zayn: reach people we can’t ever hope to reach while in Second Life or Inworldz, and be able to do so in a much more fleshed out manner, artistically and story wise …

[09:06] Zayn: That’s the FIRST of the Twofold Goals.. Lemme elaborate on this one first before going onto the Second.
[09:06] Zayn: So over the last two years we have been doing nothing other then developing new art, new models, new stories and scripts, music… new characters to center these ideas around… as I just mentioned ,
[09:06] Zayn: essentially recreating and re-imagining “The Tinies of Raglan Shire”
[09:06] Zayn: This has been just … just a ton of work. In addition to the creative side, there’s also been the business side. Its just been a tremendous amount of work. But we knew it would be.
[09:07] Zayn: So re-imagine the world, make it better, make it BIONIC.. tell the stories of the Tinies, share them with the world, Entertain people of ALL ages, make them smile.
[09:07] Zayn: That’s what we’re furiously working on as we prepare to sit down with Entertainment Industry representatives and pitch all of this too in 2013.
[09:07] Zayn: Our Second FOLD of our goals… and it’s something we have been trying to make certain that everyone understands AND is the TRUE ULTERIOR Goal of all of this.. is to use “The Tinies of Raglan Shire” to fund our desire to help people with humanitarian and
[09:07] Zayn: Art and Music, ways to help the sick or diabled and developmentally disabled… These are things that have touched us in Our community virtually and ourselves personally in the real world.

We’ve got something a little bit different for this Friday’s Nonprofit Commons: Jazz Paws! Every once in awhile, we welcome to the NPC interesting sub-cultures and communities in the virtual world that we think might have something instructive to share with us as nonprofits and charities. The tiny community is one such group that I’ve long been a fan of.

“Jazz Paws” is an Atlanta-based entertainment production company charged with bringing the whimsical world of Raglan Shire and its denizens, the tiny animals that inhabit it, to life. A for-profit company, their larger goal is not only to entertain but also raise funds and awareness for different causes and charities. They have a Kickstarter campaign to launch an animated series based on Raglan Shire. This could be our most adorable Nonprofit Commons meeting EVER.

Join us starting at 8:30am PT as we welcome Jazz Paws to the NPC, as well as get some knowledge from our Mentors and get news and announcements from across the nonprofit world in Second Life and beyond. See you then!

[08:49] Eme Capalini: Good morning, and thanks for inviting me here today to share with you about the benefits people with disabilities get from being in a virtual world.

[08:49] Eme Capalini: Just a quick reminder of why this is an important topic. One out of every five avatars you meet in SL belongs to someone with one or more disabilities – physical, mental, emotional, or sensory.

[08:49] Eme Capalini: I’m Eme Capalini from the Virtual Ability non-profit peer support community here in SL. We have over 650 members now, and we provide a variety of kinds of support, education, services, and a strong sense of community for our membership. I’m the Vice President for Development for our 501(3)c corporation.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: Until recently, when we spoke of the benefits of virtual worlds, we mainly had anecdotal evidence in four categories.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: I’m going to share with you some quotes I’ve heard from our community members that fit into these categories.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: Learning benefits abound in Second Life.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: Although people don’t typically come into SL seeking peer support for their disability, once they hook up with one of the over 120 different peer support groups here, they can learn quite a lot!

[08:51] Eme Capalini: Plus of course, all the formal (e.g., college classes) and informal (e.g., SL classes) learning opportunities here.

[08:51] Eme Capalini: You might not think of distraction as a benefit, but to people with severe disabilities, getting their mind off their pain is important.

[08:51] Eme Capalini: Doctors in burn clinics use virtual ice worlds, where the patient can throw snowballs at penguins and ice gnomes, to distract the patients from the agony of burn debridement, bandage changes, and the other painful treatments they must undergo.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: For medical benefits, there has been some research, so the evidence of benefits isn’t just anecdotal.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: Researchers confirm that people can improve their concentration, their social skills, even their spatial awareness, simply by interacting with others in a virtual world setting.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: I think that social benefits are probably the most important to people with disabilities, who are often socially and physically isolated. Imagine being able to make friends with people your own age when you’ve spent half your life lying in bed seeing only your family and nurses!

[08:52] Eme Capalini: It’s a lot easier to “be yourself” around other people if they aren’t put off by seeing your scars or withered limbs.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: We’re finally making progress on gathering research evidence to support what we hear from our community members.

[08:53] Eme Capalini: The psychology department at Loyola Marymount University in California recently gave a poster presentation about research they conducted in collaboration with Virtual Ability.

[08:53] Eme Capalini: The research consisted of a survey given to people who identified themselves as having a disability. The survey was given during their first week in Second Life, and repeated after 3 months here.

[08:53] Eme Capalini: It was a small study, but the results are significant, as they are the first of their kind to be done in SL.

[08:54] Eme Capalini: Participants in the study completed a variety of standardized measures that were selected to assess their psychological well-being and adjustment.

[08:54] Eme Capalini: There was no treatment in this study. The participants didn’t have to attend classes, report in regularly, keep a diary, or anything else regulated. They could do whatever they pleased.

[08:54] Eme Capalini: The majority logged in frequently, and for extended periods. They became immersed in their second lives.

[08:54] Eme Capalini: When they first came into SL, the measures indicated that the majority of participants showed clinical signs of depression. That’s not unexpected, in a group of people among whom half were severely disabled.

[08:55] Eme Capalini: Overall, the research showed that simply being in a virtual world, doing whatever you wanted to do, was very helpful. Statistically, the newcomers after 3 months were less depressed, less anxious, and less lonely.

[08:55] Eme Capalini: They also were had a more positive outlook on themselves, were more satisfied with their lives, and had higher self-esteem.

[08:55] Eme Capalini: I’m happy to answer your questions now. I’d also like to encourage you to think about all the benefits you’ve received from being in a virtual world.

[08:59] Namaara MacMoragh: Thank you Rick, and everyone here, for the opportunity to speak with you today.. I’d like to start by telling you a little about myself and my work. Then share with you about brain injury and brain injury awareness month in SL.

[08:59] Namaara MacMoragh: I am a consultant with GReat Kreations (http://greatkreations.com). which was founded in 1995 to meet the growing demand for services by nonprofit organizations in the US.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: A lot has happened through the years and I now work collaboratively with colleagues and clients around the world as my work continues to evolve around issues of organizational sustainability and continuance.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: But, in 2008 I was working on developing virtual staff and workplaces that allowed greater flexibility to meet the needs of my clients without increasing the burden of costs during an economically turbulent time.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: That’s how I wound up in Second Life.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: In late 2008 I began attending NPC meetings and events and met fate Paule at a Tuesday gathering at Wharf Ratz. fate is the Executive Director of a Washington State nonprofit; Brain Energy Support Team (BEST) .

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: fate is with us today to answer questions as they come up. Say hi, fate.

[09:01] fate Paule: hello everyone 🙂 thanks for letting us be here

[09:01] Namaara MacMoragh: I’ve been working with fate on a variety of projects ever since — at the BEST SL office on Etopia and in the RL BEST office in Tacoma WA.

[09:01] Namaara MacMoragh: BEST was founded in 2008 and is the leading organization of individuals with brain injury and their caregivers providing peer-to-peer support, resources, and access to services for those with brain injury and their caregivers.

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: BEST is a leader in training for support group facilitators, professionals, and educators. Through their mentoring program, Project PEER, BEST also offers a unique way of empowering individuals with brain injury and their caregivers. You can find out more at http://projectpeer.org

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: Our goal is to create engagement around the real issues of brain injury that go beyond the injury itself. An injury occurs in a moment. The cognitive, emotional, physical challenges that alter someone’s life often last for many years and often go unaddressed.

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: Second Life offered us an opportunity to work together building an organizational foundation for BEST while living 3,000 miles apart. It was 6 months after we began working together in SL that we actually met in RL for a board training session in 2009.

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: March is the official month for Brain Injury Awareness. BEST, Etopia, and the fabulous folks at HealthInfo Island (yay Gentle and crew!} have worked together to create a celebration and awareness campaign that includes presentations, displays, concerts, gift hunt, and more to raise awareness about, and raise dollars for, brain injury.

[09:03] Namaara MacMoragh: We are collaborating with others in SL who are providing support,information & referral, and social opportunities for individuals with brain injury as well as training and resources for professionals and educators.

[09:03] Namaara MacMoragh: I’m especially excited to work with Gentle Heron of Virtual Abilities. I’ve learned a lot and so appreciate the ideas, support, and … well … at the expense of gushing… everything. As an aside, it’s been wonderful to watch the growth of such a valuable organization here in SL.

[09:05] Namaara MacMoragh: We have a lot of great events, presentations, displays, and builds across sims we are highlighting during Brain Injury Awareness month and throughout April and May, with a huge World-wide brain injury picnic day on June 16th.

[09:05] Namaara MacMoragh: This year they recieved independent funding from the state to not only continue their work with support group development, but to administer mini-grants to groups across the state. This increase in funding is because of the way BEST has used SL and other virtual work tools to communicate, train, and support facilitators and others.

[09:06] Namaara MacMoragh: These are just some of the ways we work with real people on real issues in virtual worlds.

Here’s an update on the TechSoup Storytelling Challenge, for those of you that submitted and those who want to supports others who did submit. We are happy to announce that “Audience Choice Awards” are now open for voting through Sunday, March 11 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Thank you so much for your patience as we worked through some technical issues. So, without further adieu… Here’s How it Works:

• · Go to TSDigs.org
• Select “Vote for Video” or “Vote for Photo Sets”
• Find your favorite organization by the name of the person who submitted the video or photo set, not the organization.
• Vote! (If you happen to encounter a “parsererror” message, simply click OK and you will still get through.)

Some Tips and Guidelines:

• You can vote more than once and for more than one video – but please use this privilege wisely! We hope to see you use this to support fellow nonprofit and social good storytellers. (We’ll be on the lookout for spammers and the like.)
• Videos or photo entries that went over the required length or otherwise did not meet submission guidelines have been removed from the voting and judging. However, they will be included on our YouTube playlist and Flickr sets (coming soon!).

The Prizes!

Namaara MacMoragh, who will be speaking about the work of the Brain Energy Support Team (BEST), a group that since 2008 has been providing peer-to-peer support, resources, and access to services for those with brain injury and their caregivers.
