[08:41] Buffy Beale: hi Bulaklak 🙂
[08:41] bulaklak: As you might know, our Digitial Storytelling Challenge is winding down… We are TREMENDOUSLY impressed with the quality of submissions this year.
[08:42] bulaklak: We hope you will be too. Please view the videos in our YouTube playlist.
[08:42] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/AFfD7a
[08:42] bulaklak: And check out the slide shows on Flickr
[08:42] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/ypk5bb
[08:43] bulaklak: And then join us on March 28 here in Second Live (Aloft) or in person in San Francisco for our Awards Ceremony and Screening Party
[08:43] bulaklak: RSVP here
[08:43] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/tsdigs12rsvp
[08:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): its a really fun party!
[08:43] bulaklak: We also have a new episode of Nonprofits Live coming up on March 21
[08:43] bulaklak: Hosted as always by Inkenzo, who you just may know =)
[08:44] bulaklak: This time we will be talking about DIY blogging
[08:44] Glitteractica Cookie: Nonprofits Live is our interactive webinar series hosted by In Kenzo!
[08:44] bulaklak: Please RSVP and learn more about that event here
[08:44] Glitteractica Cookie: (grbabing link)
[08:44] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/FO5lAm
[08:44] Glitteractica Cookie: there we go
[08:44] bulaklak: And lastly, I want to let you know about an event coming up in San Francisco that should be pretty cool
[08:46] bulaklak: ISIS is hosting its first ever hack-a-thon, together with TechSoup.. A hack-a-thon is a live event bringing together developers, designers, innovators and entrepreneurs to build exciting new apps and tools, in this case to improve young people’s health and wellness. This short and focused event – 1 day only – will result in the rapid development of interesting concepts and working prototypes that will be developed further by the participating teams back at their desks and at future hack-a-thon events, with ISIS and TechSoup as partners for future product
[08:46] bulaklak: Sorry about that – machine is running a little slow today!
[08:46] bulaklak: And here’s the link
[08:46] Second Life: Trill Zapatero is online.
[08:46] bulaklak: http://sextech.org/hackathon
[08:46] bulaklak: This is on March 31. Please check it out!
[08:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’ll be there!
[08:47] bulaklak: Yep, and Stargrrl will be there and Alebez, too.
[08:47] bulaklak: So that’s what I’ve got for today!
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: And me
[08:47] bulaklak: Looking forward to today’s talk.
[08:47] bulaklak: And Glitter
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: Um, don’t forget Glitter
[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: sheesh!
[08:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): going to be a fun day
[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: 😉
[08:48] bulaklak: =)
[08:48] Ricken Flow: is there any online presentations/streaming for the hack a thon?
[08:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thanks bulaklaklaklaklak
[08:48] Buffy Beale: lol Bulaklak don’t forget your boss
[08:48] bulaklak: lol Buffy
[08:48] bulaklak: Good question Ricken
[08:48] bulaklak: I will look into that and announce next week!
[08:49] Ricken Flow: thank you
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: We could probably arrange that
[08:49] bulaklak: At the very least, Alebez will be taking video clips and writing it up
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: Bulaklak, talk to Alebez and let’s try to make that happen
[08:49] bulaklak: Will do
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: she could also live stream bts from her flipvid
[08:49] bulaklak: great idea
[08:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): great. any other questions?
[08:50] Brena Benoir: Live stream would defintiely allow some to participate that are working with or targeting youth and healthcare issues
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: We will check into it
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: it may be too chaotic, since it’s a live hackathon event
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: but the TSDIGS party will definitely be livestreamed!
[08:51] bulaklak: With a drive in theater!
[08:51] stargrrl: Hope all of you will join us. It’s going to be a fun night.
[08:52] Ricken Flow: live hiv education and youth looks around for Chayenne
[08:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): IM a hackathon is going t overy hard to vieo stream, and probably frustrating to watch
[08:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): since its going to be lots of people working in small groups on different apps
[08:52] Chayenn: what do u mean?
[08:52] bulaklak: Yes, but rest assured all the solutions arrived at will be published and recapped!
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): that’s my experience of how hackathons typically go.
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But maybe there is a presentation at the beginning and end that might be good to stream?
[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: ok, so maybe we won’t livestream but will post the video recaps later
[08:54] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Regarding the TS Digs drive-in, this is one of teh biggest draws to the NPC of the year
[08:54] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So we are counting on each of you to spread the word to all of your constituents and netowrks
[08:55] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Please grabe the invite from the Google list, nonprofitcommons.org or the group invite
[08:55] bulaklak: I’m really looking forward to hearing some of our eloquent judges talk, and seeing some of those really excellent submissions projected!
[08:55] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): for sure
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Okay well we should move on….
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Typically we would have Mentors Central at this time
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But most of our mentors are at VWBPE today
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so we gave them a day off
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): 🙂
[08:56] bulaklak: Will they fill us in on the conference next week?
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So that gives us more time to talk with our featured guest
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Bulaklak, I hope so
[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: me too
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’m sure we’ll have a lot of recaps next week
[08:57] bulaklak: cool
FACEBOOK TIMELINE FOR ORGANIZATIONS
[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Right now let me introduce stargrrl, aka Susan Chavez, social media for nonprofits expert
[08:58] stargrrl: Hi everyone! Happy to be here.
[08:58] Glitteractica Cookie: Hi Star
[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We invited her toda to give us all an update on upcoming changes to FaceBook that may impact our nonprofits
[08:58] bulaklak: Hi, Star!
[08:58] Buffy Beale: yay Star 🙂
[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): take it away miss Stargrrl
[08:59] Glitteractica Cookie: She’s a Star!
[08:59] stargrrl: Thanks, Rik.
[09:00] stargrrl: So we’re half way through March so this is a good time to talk about the changes coming to Facebook since they will become the norm once the month ends.
[09:00] stargrrl: The updates to Facebook brand pages mark one of the biggest overhauls since Facebook created brand pages.
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): What groups here today have a Facebook page for your nonprofit?
[09:01] Jen (jenelle.levenque): raises hand
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: techsoup
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): betterverse
[09:01] Namaara MacMoragh: we do, too… myself and all of my clients
[09:02] bulaklak: yup, TechSoup
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: but you all knew that, and if you haven’t already done so , plz LIKE us!
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): oh and Yehoodi
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: doesn’t NPC?
[09:02] bulaklak: http://www.facebook.com/TechSoupGlobal
[09:02] stargrrl: Yes, please do “like” us if you haven’t already. 🙂
[09:02] Ricken Flow: I do
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yes NPC too of course
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: duh
[09:02] bulaklak: http://www.facebook.com/nonprofitcommons
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: thx
[09:03] Glitteractica Cookie: That one needs a new banner image too
[09:03] bulaklak: true
[09:04] stargrrl: Speaking of which, the one change that I’m really excited about is the new banner image for pages.
[09:04] Buffy Beale: Bridges for Women do
[09:05] stargrrl: I think the banner is a great place for nonprofits to tell their digital story on Facebook
[09:06] stargrrl: FYI, the dimensions of the banner image are 851×351 pixels
[09:07] stargrrl: Beth Kanter has a Pinterest board with some great examples of nonprofits using powerful photos in the new Timeline layout
[09:07] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): of course she does!
[09:07] Glitteractica Cookie: ooh, do you have the link to that handy?
[09:08] Glitteractica Cookie: if not, i’ll get it later
[09:08] stargrrl: here’s the link: https://pinterest.com/kanter/facebook-cover-images/
[09:08] Glitteractica Cookie: thx
[09:09] stargrrl: Also, it’s worth mentioning that Facebook has some “don’ts” surrounding cover images that aren’t getting a lot of discussion
[09:10] stargrrl: The most important one is that it’s against Facebook’s Terms of Service to use text on your banner images
[09:10] stargrrl: So if you were thinking of using the banner image for making a call-to-action, you’ll need to try another approach
[09:12] stargrrl: The large banner is also meant to replace applications that are meant to serve as custom landing pages, so that’s out too
[09:12] Glitteractica Cookie: oh, so there will be no more custom landing pages?
[09:12] stargrrl: Since you can’t customize your landing page anymore, you really need to put some thought into the image you’ll be using on your page
[09:13] Glitteractica Cookie: doe this mean that the third party campign apps will no longer work?
[09:14] stargrrl: They will work but not as landing pages. Admins can no longer set another tab or app as the default place viewers see when they get to a Facebook page
[09:14] Ricken Flow: that is a bummer so you cant have the name of your org on the banner for your page 🙁
[09:15] bulaklak: Actually text is okay, it’s just certain types of text that are forbidden
[09:15] bulaklak: A. Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.
B. Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.
C. References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
D. Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.
[09:15] stargrrl: Yes, thanks for clarifying
[09:16] bulaklak: So Ricken you could have your org name, just not website address
[09:16] stargrrl: Pages will have a larger thumbnail area for their logos that will be placed in front of the banner image so it’s not entirely a loss
[09:16] DJ Earnshaw: why would they do something that stupid, other than that they can
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I also wonder how that will be enforced?
[09:19] stargrrl: I’m not sure how they’ll manage to enforce that on every page but given that their Customer Support isn’t very responsive, I would caution organization’s to err on the side of caution
[09:20] bulaklak: Nancy Schwartz talks about it in this guest post on Beth’s blog. http://www.bethkanter.org/message-it/
[09:20] bulaklak: She shows examples of text that is okay to use vs. text that is more iffy
[09:20] stargrrl: Thanks for link
[09:20] bulaklak: Sure!
[09:21] stargrrl: Also, in other app news – apps will no longer be listed on the left-hand navingation area. They’ll now be featured under the banner image
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Should groups fill in the Timeline history with their orgs history or activities and achievements?
[09:23] stargrrl: Absolutely!
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): sounds time consuming but possibly valuable
[09:24] stargrrl: It’s pretty neat the organizations can mark milestones such as when they were founded.
[09:24] bulaklak: John Haydon made a good point, too, about filling in the history of your org’s cause, as well
[09:25] stargrrl: Another good idea for your Timeline
[09:25] bulaklak: So you can put in milestones related to breakthroughs and advancements in the history of whatever cause or population you support
[09:26] stargrrl: The other nice thing about milestones is that you can add photo and video to add a little more color to what you’re highlighting
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): could be great way to show growth too over time
[09:27] Buffy Beale: these are great tips!
[09:27] stargrrl: Yes, show your organization’s evolution into what it is today.
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): An other questions for Stargrrl about how to use FB effectively for your org?
[09:28] Glitteractica Cookie: What is yr favorite nonprofit FB pg?
[09:28] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ooo good one
[09:29] stargrrl: I really like what Charity: Water has done using the new Timeline format
[09:30] stargrrl: Surfrider’s page is also good
[09:30] Buffy Beale: Question: Is there a page or two you can suggest for Nonprofits to follow?
[09:30] CarynTopia Silvercloud: what about having an event like a movie showing from the page?
[09:31] Buffy Beale: besides TechSoup 🙂
[09:31] stargrrl: I think the two I listed above are good examples of organizations making the most of Facebook Timeline
[09:31] Hour Destiny: I take it Facebook isn’t very interested in getting feedback from the nonprofity community.
[09:32] stargrrl: Also, outside of the nonprofit world, I like how the New York Times is using Timeline to show milestones in their newspaper’s history
[09:33] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thats pretty cool
[09:33] stargrrl: Facebook hasn’t done much as far as changes to video sharing, most of the changes are focused on the look of pages and providing administrators with a bigger toolkit to manage their pages
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (We’ll actually be streaming the TSDigs Awards Ceremony into Facebook as well as SL
[09:36] stargrrl: The changes to pages are coming whether any of us like it or not and at least this time I have to give Facebook credit for letting admins time to try out and preview the new features
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so we have 2 more weeks to get our timelines all pretty
[09:37] stargrrl: Yes, all pages will be changed to the Timeline format on March 30
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): stargrrl, what web links can you provide for people who want more info nd ideas?
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we already mentioned Beth Kanters blog
[09:37] stargrrl: Here’s a more thorough look at the new features: http://bit.ly/FOa59T
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): http://www.bethkanter.org/timelines-today/
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): great
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And how do people get a hold of you if they have further questions?
[09:39] stargrrl: You can find me on Twitter, @Susan_Chavez
[09:40] stargrrl: And you can also email me, and the awesome TechSoup team, at community@techsoup.org
[09:40] Glitteractica Cookie: she is also the author of many great blog posts on techsoup
[09:40] Glitteractica Cookie: incuding the one one timeline
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): awesome
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lets thank stargrrl for coming to the NPC to speak with us today
[09:41] CarynTopia Silvercloud: thanks!
[09:41] Red (talkwithmarie): ty stargrrl! awesome info:)
