[08:57] Fire Centaur: Im coming

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: This is Paul Preibisch / Fire Centaur of Avatar Classroom .

[08:58] bulaklak: Welcome, Fire!

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Quick bio of Fire

[08:58] Buffy Beale: yay Fire!

[09:00] Fire Centaur: waiting for avatars to rez in so I dont sit on your lap!

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, please sit in the front

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Lots of people are interested in what you do

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: the stools in the front

[09:00] JerryBuchko: πŸ™‚

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Yay!

[09:01] Fire Centaur: nice to see you!~

[09:01] Buffy Beale: nice to see you too Fire

[09:01] Fire Centaur: thanks for inviting me back to speak with you all
[09:01] Fire Centaur: its 12:30am here in Tokyo!
[09:01] Fire Centaur: getting hot in this part of the world already

[09:02] Rhiannon Chatnoir waves hello to Japan

[09:02] Fire Centaur: for those of you whom I havent met yet,
[09:02] Fire Centaur: my name is Paul preibisch

[09:02] Tuty Inkpen: Since you’re Fire sounds like you can take the heat. lol

[09:02] Fire Centaur: haha

[09:02] talkwithmarie: hehe

[09:02] Tuty Inkpen: I’m in Atlanta … called HOTlanta

[09:02] Fire Centaur: right Donna, I chose this name specifically because the heat usually gets to me!
[09:02] Fire Centaur: I am an elearning developer from Vancouver Canada, currently living in Tokyo Japan. I am a graduate in Computer Science, from Simon Fraser University, and have been working with Moodle for about 7 years now.

[09:03] Buffy Beale: ohh yay a Canadian πŸ™‚

[09:03] Fire Centaur: Im really glad to be here at NPC with you – thanks to Rik for inviting me
[09:03] Fire Centaur: Ys, I miss Vancouver a lot! I will be back there in August though to escape the Tokyo heat!
[09:04] Fire Centaur: Today, I want to talk with you about a project Ive been workign on for over a year now in Tokyo

[09:04] Glitteractica Cookie: great

[09:04] Fire Centaur: with another SL user named Edmund Edgar
[09:04] Fire Centaur: Edmund Earp in Second Life

[09:04] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Fire is the person to ask all of your Moodle/Sloodle questions to after he finishes chatting

[09:04] Fire Centaur: both of us are origional developers in the SLOODLE project
[09:05] Fire Centaur: How many of you here are familiar with MOODLE?

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: me

[09:05] Rhiannon Chatnoir raises hand

[09:05] Lotta Flux raises hand

[09:05] JerryBuchko: yes vaguely

[09:05] JerryBuchko: understand that it’s an LMS

[09:05] Ozma Malibu: yes

[09:05] Fire Centaur: ok this is great

[09:05] Buffy Beale: I am

[09:06] Fire Centaur: looks like we have a few people

[09:06] Jenelle Levenque: I have no clue

[09:06] Fire Centaur: well… very quickly,

[09:06] Glitteractica Cookie: i know moodle

[09:06] Fire Centaur: MOODLE is a software you can install on your webserver,
[09:06] Fire Centaur: that once installed, is a teacher / student website
[09:06] Fire Centaur: (Learning Management System)
[09:06] Fire Centaur: where teachers can assign logins for their students
[09:07] Fire Centaur: or students can sign into
[09:07] Fire Centaur: and then particpate in online activituies
[09:07] Fire Centaur: like chat rooms
[09:07] Fire Centaur: group forums
[09:07] Fire Centaur: quizes
[09:07] Fire Centaur: assignements
[09:07] Fire Centaur: submit online papers
[09:07] Fire Centaur: etc
[09:07] Fire Centaur: since it is an LMS
[09:07] Fire Centaur: every activity is linked to the grade book

[09:07] Tuty Inkpen: so similar to ning but it’s on your own server
[09:07] Fire Centaur: so a teacher can assign grades etc

[09:07] Fire Centaur: yes

[09:08] Jenelle Levenque: We had something like that at college

[09:08] Tuty Inkpen: (I am a homeschool educator, so this could be useful for us. Definitely want to know more.)

[09:09] Ozma Malibu: The gradebook part is important for the teacher to organize the classroom.

[09:09] Fire Centaur: MOODLE is opensource

[09:09] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yay!

[09:09] Tuty Inkpen: sweet!

[09:10] Fire Centaur: meaning it is completely free
[09:10] Fire Centaur: and many programmers can commit new features to it
[09:10] Fire Centaur: so the whole community beneift
[09:10] Fire Centaur: its licensed under GPL3

[09:10] Ethelred Weatherwax: I disagree. I dislike “open source” because it means you need a certain level of technical skill. And usually your own server

[09:10] Fire Centaur: as is SLOODLE
[09:11] Fire Centaur: MOODLE has a core philosophy

[09:11] Creech Antwerp: I am a fan of open source

[09:11] Fire Centaur: which you can read about here; http://docs.moodle.org/en/Pedagogy

[09:11] In Kenzo: Many open source technologies do not require your own server and can be very easy to use.

[09:11] Fire Centaur: briefly, it is:
[09:12] Fire Centaur: All of us are potential teachers as well as learners – in a true collaborative environment
we are both.

[09:12] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Ethelred, there are some hosting companies, like DreamHost, that have one click installs of common open source software, such as Moodle, to make it easy to set up a base install

[09:12] Fire Centaur: 2) We learn particularly well from the act of creating or expressing something for others to
See.
[09:12] Fire Centaur: 3) We learn a lot by just observing the activity of our peers.

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: Fire, if you turn on your Nonprofit Commons Group Tag, then you can Rez your slideshow.

[09:12] Fire Centaur: thanks zinnia

[09:12] Creech Antwerp: Eth – you can also fairly easily get volunteers who can help you with setup.

[09:12] Tuty Inkpen: I use hostgator and think they may have moodle on quick install … will look into it

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: You are welcome, we want to see your goods!

[09:13] Ozma Malibu: Educators like Moodle because it’s less commercial, Ethelred, not just to make money but designed for good pedagogy, and more fun to use than other LMSs.

[09:14] Fire Centaur: im sorry, I think I must relog –

[09:14] Tuty Inkpen: Yes, as a home educator, non-commercial online resources are important … so many ads on most of the free sites and they are just awful and crash my older pc’s that the kids use

[09:14] Lotta Flux: wb Fire

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: Did you guys get to check out Fire’s website?
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: http://avatarclassroom.com

[09:15] Lotta Flux will after the presentation

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: It looks really cool! We get a lot of questions about SLOODLE.

[09:15] Chayenn: PY1 emailed twice avatarclassroom since they made their last presentation but no answer

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: So, I know he will be back soon to share with us.

[09:16] bulaklak: It must be such an exciting time to grow up.

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: oh, Chayenn, you can remind him.

[09:16] Chayenn: i will

[09:16] Buffy Beale: yay here’s Fire πŸ™‚

[09:16] Lotta Flux: yay! he’s back!

[09:16] Fire Centaur: Hi again!

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Welcome Back Fire

[09:16] Lotta Flux: lol Buffy πŸ™‚

[09:16] bulaklak: Welcome back, Fire.

[09:16] Fire Centaur: im real sorry everyone – its funny, sl never troubles me EXCEPT when I have a presentation
[09:16] Fire Centaur: im on a different machine now

[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Super

[09:18] Chayenn: PY1 was emailing you a few times after your last presentation in NPC concerning your chairs recording surveys
[09:18] Chayenn: but we never got any answer from you

[09:18] Fire Centaur: ok… as I was saying

[09:18] Fire Centaur: the MOODLE philosphy, there are two more points
[09:18] Fire Centaur: 4) A learning environment needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly
respond to the needs of the participants within it.

[09:18] Chayenn: We have a sim for HIV education on Jokaydiagrid and we were looking to get your advice to record our surveys

[09:19] Fire Centaur: oh great Chaen
[09:19] Fire Centaur: pls contact me about this – perhaps I can help
[09:19] Fire Centaur: so In sumary,
[09:19] Fire Centaur: All of us are potential teachers as well as learners – in a true collaborative environment
we are both.

We learn particularly well from the act of creating or expressing something for others to
See.

We learn a lot by just observing the activity of our peers.

By understanding the contexts of others, we can teach in a more transformational way
(constructivism)

A learning environment needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly
respond to the needs of the participants within it.
[09:20] Fire Centaur: so.. SLOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: is…
[09:20] Fire Centaur: The LINK
[09:20] Fire Centaur: between second life and MOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: you probably guess that
[09:20] Fire Centaur: !
[09:20] Fire Centaur: once you have MOODLE installed on yoru server
[09:20] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE is a TOOLBOX of 3d elements that connect to your MOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: it is the 3D extention to your LMS
[09:20] Fire Centaur: so you can do activities in SL

[09:21] Lotta Flux: How cool is that??

[09:21] Fire Centaur: and have them communicate with your LMS

[09:21] Lotta Flux: smiles

[09:21] Tuty Inkpen: Pretty cool

[09:21] Fire Centaur: …

[09:21] Creech Antwerp: Ok, that is really neat

[09:21] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE was started in 2007
[09:21] Fire Centaur: and was origionally pitched to the SLED mailing list
[09:21] Fire Centaur: by jeremy Kemp
[09:22] Fire Centaur: Jeremy Kabumpo from SJSU

[09:22] Creech Antwerp: Does it go in both directions?

[09:22] Fire Centaur: and also by Daniel Livingstone / Buddy Sprocket (UWS) posted the idea on Second Life
Educators mailing list
[09:22] Fire Centaur: yes it does
[09:22] Fire Centaur: creech

[09:22] Creech Antwerp: and are you using the SL API for it?

[09:22] Fire Centaur: basically, using SLOODLE

[09:22] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yay Jeremey & Daniel.. both great guys & educators

[09:22] Fire Centaur: you have a Database attached to SL, with an API
[09:22] Fire Centaur: in 2008,
[09:22] Fire Centaur: the great folks at Eduserve gave us a grant
[09:23] Fire Centaur: for funded development of the idea

[09:23] Glitteractica Cookie: Let’s hold on questions until he end, so we have time to get the key information for the group before Fire’s time runs out
[09:23] Fire Centaur: before that, good ppl were volunteering their time, like Peter Bloomfield and edmund earp

[09:23] Fire Centaur: I was hired as a full time developer in 2009
[09:23] Fire Centaur: then in 2010, i worked independently on the project while in vancouver
[09:24] Fire Centaur: and did projects with educators like Chris Surridge (Devils Island Mystery)
[09:24] Fire Centaur: and other ppl in SL
[09:24] Fire Centaur: in 2010, till present I teamed up with Edmund earp
[09:24] Fire Centaur: to continue devel
[09:24] Fire Centaur: what we found however
[09:24] Fire Centaur: was

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Fire, how can people get going on the Avatar Classroom?

[09:24] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE was REALLLY hard to install
[09:24] Fire Centaur: ok sorry for histry lesson!

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: hehe
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: We are just so excited!

[09:24] Fire Centaur: ill hurry it up
[09:25] Fire Centaur: ok so to install sloodle
[09:25] Fire Centaur: you needed abunch of skills
[09:25] Fire Centaur: install on your web server
[09:25] Fire Centaur: configuration of tools etc
[09:25] Fire Centaur: it just took too long to set up
[09:25] Fire Centaur: so…
[09:25] Fire Centaur: thats where the avatar classroom came in
[09:25] Fire Centaur: ed and I wanted to build somethign turn key
[09:25] Fire Centaur: with the avatar classroom, you sign up at http://avatarclassroom.com
[09:26] Fire Centaur: and our server automatically makes a moodle website for you
[09:26] Fire Centaur: and hosts it on our server
[09:26] Fire Centaur: as a subdomain
[09:26] Fire Centaur: etc: englishvillage.avatarclassroom.com
[09:26] Tuty Inkpen: sweet! you solved a problem. awesome.
[09:26] Fire Centaur: and automatically
[09:26] Fire Centaur: installs sloodle module
[09:26] Fire Centaur: AND configures all the tools…
[09:26] Fire Centaur: so…
[09:26] Fire Centaur: what you get in world

[09:26] Lotta Flux: wow!

[09:26] Fire Centaur: is a 3d classroom
[09:27] Fire Centaur: once you rez it

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Very cool!

[09:27] Fire Centaur: it has a control panel
[09:27] Fire Centaur: with a shared media surface
[09:27] Fire Centaur: you open it up
[09:27] Fire Centaur: and it has an iphone interface
[09:27] Fire Centaur: (we used iphone webkit)
[09:27] Fire Centaur: to set up scenes
[09:27] Fire Centaur: it comes with four scenes preloaded
[09:27] Fire Centaur: and they are automatically linked to your moodle website
[09:27] Fire Centaur: so… literally in about 5 minutes, you have a complete website with tools for
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 1) quizing
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 2) recording chat inworld
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 3) presentations
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 4) a scoreobard!
[09:28] Fire Centaur: with any currency you choose
[09:28] Fire Centaur: so you can use it for roleplaying if you like
[09:28] Fire Centaur: I made a bunch of visual documentation at avatarclassrrom.com
[09:28] Fire Centaur: everyone can sign up for free
[09:28] Fire Centaur: and try it out if you like
[09:29] Fire Centaur: ed and I are doign a 30 day trial for free, so if you want to check out if you like sloodle, you can do it, and we wont have hard feelings if you cancel on day 29
[09:29] Fire Centaur: !!!

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: Great!

[09:29] Fire Centaur: shall I rez one here?

[09:31] Fire Centaur: thats the rezzer
[09:31] Fire Centaur: it has a shared media surface I have to log into
[09:31] Fire Centaur: ine sec
[09:31] Fire Centaur: one sec

[09:31] Ozma Malibu: ah! that is what you meant by scenes. but do people still use their own SL islands?

[09:31] Fire Centaur: yes
[09:32] Fire Centaur: u can make your own scenes and our rezzer saves it
[09:32] Fire Centaur: like a holodec

[09:32] Tuty Inkpen: cool

[09:32] Ozma Malibu: ah

[09:32] Fire Centaur: and you can move thigns around and then save their positions
[09:32] Fire Centaur: ill rezz the first scene
[09:32] Fire Centaur: if i move the shell
[09:33] Fire Centaur: everything moves too
[09:33] Fire Centaur: now ill do the remaining scenes
[09:33] Fire Centaur: the last scene has a pool with sharks
[09:33] Fire Centaur: and quiz chairs
[09:33] Fire Centaur: thats the fun one
[09:33] Fire Centaur: ojk this is the presentation scene

[09:33] Zinnia Zauber: lol

[09:33] Fire Centaur: woa
[09:33] Fire Centaur: its big

[09:33] Buffy Beale: lol this is great

[09:33] Ozma Malibu: so you only have one scene at a time?

[09:33] Fire Centaur: maybe you will need to fly up to it
[09:34] Fire Centaur: oh
[09:34] Fire Centaur: u can rez multiple scenes at once

[09:34] Lotta Flux cams up instead πŸ™‚

[09:36] Fire Centaur: ok
[09:36] Fire Centaur: np

[09:36] Fire Centaur: connected to a moodle website
[09:36] Fire Centaur: this one is connected to http://englishvillage.avatarclassroom.com
[09:36] Fire Centaur: when a student sits on a quiz chair
