Using Symbolic Modeling for the June 19th Nonprofit Commons Meeting
This Friday, June 19th, TechSoup’s Nonprofit Commons in Second Life meeting will feature Niela Miller (Marly Milena in SL) and an overview of how the process of symbolic modeling and creative metaphor can be used for problem solving and insight discovery. Using Second Life and virtual creative tools for visual modeling can be powerful tool for counselors, trainers, community facilitators and educators.
Niela Miller, M.S. Education/Communications, is a Gestalt therapist, Jungian Process worker, educator, trainer, facilitator, coach. and multi-artist. With her combined background in arts, humanistic psychology and education, she joined Second Life as her avatar Marly Milena in 2007 excited about the creative possibilities for learning, teaching, and promoting human potential and growth. She created the Octagon: Creative Exploration group in Second Life which offers programs using arts processes for personal growth and educational ventures, employing her skills in Gestalt and Jungian modalities and group dynamics. This summer Marly will be leading a series of workshops for those wanting to dive deeper into Symbolic Modeling training. Going Mobile for the May 29th Nonprofit Commons Meeting
This Friday, May 29th, TechSoup’s Nonprofit Commons in Second Life meeting will feature a discussion on Mobile phone growth, usage, and strategy for nonprofits and educators. Mobile and smart phone usage has been consistently on the rise. Smart phones are increasingly how many youth, elderly, and those in areas of the world where cell networks are more reliable, access the internet. Even Google has begun to change how it ranks web sites by their mobile ‘friendliness’. What does all of this mean for the strategy of your org or project? Come chat about mobile, from strategy to fundraising.
Immediately following our regular Nonprofit Commons meeting, in conjunction with Virtual Village, we will be hosting a NPC mentor-led tour of the member offices and resource spaces that make up the Nonprofit Commons community.

Prepping Presenters: from Entry to Delivery for the May 8th NonProfit Commons Meeting
This Friday, May 8th, TechSoup’s Nonprofit Commons in Second Life meeting will feature iSkye Silverweb, and a discussion on prepping presenters, from new user entry point, to delivery of their presentations. As we all know, there is a bit of a learning curve for new avatars entering Second Life. There are numerous help islands, orientation centers and mentor programs to help make the experience more pleasant and even fun. Not everyone who enters Second Life is coming in merely to explore or discover what is here in Second Life. Some come in for a specific purpose, such as attending a class or a presentation, or even to give a presentation. To address the needs of these individuals who come to present at Virtual Ability’s two annual conferences, and also to assist presenters at VWBPE’s conferences, iSkye Silverweb has developed a system for quickly orienting and training presenters coming into Second Life for the first (and hopefully not the only) time. She will share her thoughts on this and her best practices for helping these first-time-in-SL presenters to have a positive and successful experience in this virtual setting.
