Digital Storytelling – Achievement and Recognition for the May 10th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, May 10th, Nonprofit Commons in Second Life will feature Renne Emiko Brock / Zinnia Zauber is sharing her Digital Storytelling lesson “A Feather in Your Cap – Achievement and Recognition” about motivation, awards, and rewards. 
 
Renne is an artist and multimedia professor at Peninsula College and she has taught her coursework in Second Life for 11 years. She states, “Imparting knowledge and acknowledgment is vital for encouraging curiosity and confidence in students.” and presented this at the 2019 Virtual Worlds: Best Practices in Education to inspire educators.

Mental Health Symposium 2019 for the April 26th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, April 26th at 8:30AM PST, Nonprofit Commons in Second Life will attend as a community Virtual Ability’s Mental Health Symposium 2019 event. 

The theme of this Symposium is “Mental Health in the 21st Century: Digital Destruction or Support?” Our international group of presenters will offer a wide interpretation of the theme, based on their interests and academic backgrounds.

The Symposium will being at 8:30AM PST and take place in Virtual Ability’s Sojourner Auditorium, on Virtual Ability island. The SLurl for the auditorium is: Sojourner Auditorium, Virtual Ability Island.

The Virtual Ability community hosts this annual Symposium to share information about mental health and mental disabilities with the general population. Within our cross-disability community we have members who deal with a variety of mental health issues.

Exploring Lit Fest & Fantasy Faire for the April 19th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

Join us Friday, April 19th for the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life meeting featuring a field trip to both Lit Fest & Fantasy Faire.

Celebrating its eleventh year, Fantasy Faire 2019 is the largest gathering of fantasy designers, enthusiasts, role-players and performers in the virtual world. From Thursday, April 18 to Sunday May 5, treat yourself to shopping, dance and theater performances, DJ parties, auctions, questing, our Literary Festival, fantasy art, events and role-playing as thousands of Second Life residents and creators bring their own visions together to support the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world without cancer.
Fantasy Faire has hosted the Literary Festival within it since 2015. It has featured speakers and workshops, authors and poets, special guests and region tours. It has celebrated the imagination and the works of Terry Pratchett, William Shakespeare, J.R.R. Tolkien and George RR Martin with their own days of events. This year they celebrate April 24th as a day of events around the author Ursula K. Le Guin! Lit Fest has escorted the curious through the Fairelands and encouraged them to put their discoveries into words.

Astronauts and DNA for the March 8th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, March 8th, the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life features Shannon Bohle (Archivist Llewellyn in Second Life) presenting on “Astronauts and DNA: Twin Studies are Just the Beginning”, with the help of Plutchik – a chatbot-based artificial intelligence capable of fully autonomous lecture presentations. The presentation will cover the topic of epigenetics and looks closely at NASA’s recent Twins Study featuring Mark Kelly and Scott Kelly where NASA inadvertently spread fake news about epigenetics across a range of national media. The lecture explains NASA’s error and corrects it. 
 
Shannon holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. She was a finalist for the Linden Prize in 2010 for creating and directing the Neil A. Armstrong Library and Archives.
