[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: Last week, we started a discussion about the
creation of NPC.
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: The Mentors are great supports of community
events and we want your thoughts about
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: how we could do a celebration.
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: AND your commitment to doing it.
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: So, we are looking at some dates in Sept for
this celebration.
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: But, we would like to hear from you about how
you want to participate.
[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: How long have you been part of the Nonprofit Commons?
[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: Please, don’t be shy.

Libraries, Museums and Immersive Learning with Valibrarian / Dr. Valerie Hill of Texas Woman’s University School of Library and Information Science

[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: Okay!
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: Now it is time for our guest!
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: Val, do you want to come up here please.

[08:56] Valibrarian Gregg: Shall I stand by my slides? 🙂

[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Dr. Valerie Hill is an adjunct instructor at
TWU School of Library and Information Science and a school librarian.
Her interests include media literacy, human-computer interaction, and
the impact of the digital revolution on education and libraries. As a
National Writing Trainer, she specializes in connecting literature to
writing, digital storytelling and multi-media production.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Sure, that is great
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Can you guys see the slides okay?

[08:56] Buffy Beale: looking great

[08:56] Ethelred Weatherwax: Welcome, Val

[08:56] Panny Bakerly: Welcome!

[08:56] Valibrarian Gregg: Thank you! Glad to be here.

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for joining us Val!

[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: wow– great topic

[08:57] bulaklak: Yes, really exciting!

[08:57] jodinicole8: I can’t really see the slides. Do I need to do something?

[08:57] Valibrarian Gregg: Hello everyone! Welcome to Libraries,
Museums, and Immersive Learning. I am Dr. Valerie Hill (Valibrarian)
but you can call me Val. Currently, I am a school librarian and
professor of library and information science.

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: They should rez for you jodini, up front.

[08:58] Valibrarian Gregg: Zinnia will advance for me (when I get to
slide 2!) thanks

[08:58] jodinicole8: (ok thanks, got it)

[08:58] Valibrarian Gregg: I have been researching the innovation of
virtual worlds for use in education- particularly in libraries and
museums for the past 5 years. You may already be aware of the many
benefits and advantages of virtual worlds for libraries and museums.
(Feel free to type a “yes” in the text chat.)

[08:58] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): ALT click the slides to focus
them faster!

[08:59] Valibrarian Gregg: Stay on this slide please (slide 2)

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Sorry, I got excited. 🙂

[08:59] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 2-

The digital revolution is changing the hierarchy of information from a
“top down” model…where high quality resources were those published
through peer review and traditional authority-based publishing modes
to a different model.
[09:00] Valibrarian Gregg: Today- information is published from the
“bottom up” or from user-generated sources. Youtube and Wikipedia are
usually first choices for information seekers. Anyone can publish
through blogs, wikis, and websites.
[09:00] Valibrarian Gregg: Do you all agree- Have you witnessed this change?

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: yes

[09:00] Jen (jenelle.levenque): yes

[09:00] jodinicole8: yes

[09:00] LovePhillyChick: yes

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: yes

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: it’s what we base our team’s work on

[09:01] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 3-

This new hierarchy model is the basis for my exploration of virtual
media as a delivery mode. With another librarian colleague, I have
worked on several library exhibits which shared 3D immersive learning
resources for a variety of topics. These exhibits were displayed on
Info Island- a sim where librarians around the globe have collaborated
since 2006.
[09:01] Valibrarian Gregg: These are just a few examples.
[09:01] Valibrarian Gregg: The three exhibits we worked on included:
“Virtual Texas” which featured The Alamo and other Texas symbols,
buildings, and simulations, “Virtual Tornado” which was a live
simulation of a disaster, and “Maya Island” which was an immersive
learning environment set in the ancient Mayan Civilization.
[09:02] Valibrarian Gregg: I will share a little about these 3
exhibits- then what I am working on now.
[09:02] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 4-

In spring of 2011, we built an exhibit called “Virtual Texas” which
featured historical replicas – such as The Alamo and the Texas Capitol
building, circa 1830. The Library of Congress supplied blueprints to
the builder (a native Texan) who hosted live tours on Antiquity, Texas
Island.
[09:03] Valibrarian Gregg: I will pass out landmarks and more info in
a notecard later.
[09:03] Valibrarian Gregg: Has anyone visited Antiquity, Texas?

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: yes!

[09:04] Valibrarian Gregg: The librarians met with the builder of the
historical sim and created additional resources for a display at the
Community Virtual Library Exhibition area. All of the exhibits I am
discussing have been displayed at that landmark, which I will pass
along later.

[09:04] Jo Clarrington: Yes.

[09:04] Valibrarian Gregg: This picture is just the facade- during building.
[09:04] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 5-

Two live tours were scheduled during the Virtual Texas exhibit and
participants were encouraged to dress in historical attire from the
era.
[09:05] Valibrarian Gregg: The tours included historical information
and culminated with fireworks over the capitol buildings rotunda.
Visitors could come to the exhibit and landmarks alone or in groups
throughout the early part of 2011.

[09:05] Suelly Silva (suelly17): Oii ?

[09:05] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 6-

In fall of 2011, we worked with another 3D builder on “Virtual Tornado”.
This was a simulation of a tornado, complete with scattered debris,
rescue vehicles, rescue workers and victims.
[09:06] Valibrarian Gregg: This exhibit was exciting because it
involved more simulation- live and synchronous.
[09:06] Valibrarian Gregg: The role of the librarians was to provide
the best examples of immersive learning and 3D content we could
find…which is very much the same as the role of librarians in a
physical library- only the format is virtual instead of physical.
[09:07] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 7-

The Virtual Tornado Exhibit hosted two live tours and participants
were given of choice of roles: rescue workers (such as firefighters,
paramedics, police officers) or victims.
[09:08] Valibrarian Gregg: Resources on the topic of emergency
preparedness were provided. Participants gave positive feedback
regarding the realism of the immersive experience.

[09:08] Glitteractica Cookie: good use of the tool

[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: Having never been much of a “gamer”-
driving the ambulance was tricky for me!

[09:09] Glitteractica Cookie: i always thought disaster response was
the perfect use of VW

[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: But my son had no problem! The next
generation of learners will find virtual worlds much less complicated.
[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: Do you agree?
[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: yes- Glitteracitca- I think so too
[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 8-

The third exhibit presented in collaboration with the Texas Library
Association SL Community group and the CVL library was “Maya Island”.
[09:10] Valibrarian Gregg: This exhibit was based on the final project
of the graduating class of the University of Washington’s Certificate
in Virtual Worlds Class of 2012.
[09:10] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 9-
Maya Island included interactive learning activities, such as a
hieroglyphics matching game or musical instruments and drums.
[09:11] Valibrarian Gregg: Ancient astronomy, agriculture and other
examples of the culture were experienced by participants and two live
tours were also offered.
[09:11] Valibrarian Gregg: The exhibit expelled the “end of the world
hype” about the Mayan calendar!
[09:12] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 10-

NOW! Currently, in collaboration with TLA and the Community Virtual
Library, a new exhibit is only display called “Summer in Berlin” which
is based on Germany in the 1920’s.
[09:12] Valibrarian Gregg: Clothing from the time period is offered at
the exhibit and the builder of the sim is an historical consultant for
TV and movies. She specializes in this era.
[09:13] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 11-

Live tours will be offered on July 14th (next Saturday) at 1pm SLT
and August 5th at 1pm SLT. I shot a machinima video during the grand
opening of the exhibit in June 2011 which can be seen on Youtube-
under my username – Valibrarian.
[09:14] Valibrarian Gregg: Machinima of all of the other exhibits I
have discussed can also be viewed on Youtube. The notecard I will
provide has more information.
[09:15] Valibrarian Gregg: Machinima is a great archival tool- which I
find compatible with librarianship. 🙂
[09:15] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 12-

On the topic of machinima, my video from the Maya Island exhibit won
the award for the best educational machinima at the Virtual Worlds
Best Practices in Education Conference 2012.

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: Yay!

[09:15] Valibrarian Gregg: Working with colleagues from the UW
Certificate in Virtual Worlds Program (such as Zinnia here!) was
particularly rewarding because I graduated from the program in 2010
and found it an incredible learning experience.
[09:16] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 13-

The UW Certificate in Virtual Worlds class of 2012 just graduated last
month and, as a final project, the graduates created the Museum of
Virtual Media.
[09:16] Valibrarian Gregg: I encourage you to explore this incredible
project and I plan to collaborate with them and possibly provide a
future exhibit to highlight their work and sim.
[09:17] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 14-

As we consider the future of virtual media in education- particularly
in libraries and museums, I would like to point out that many of the
UW colleagues met earlier this year at the Federal Consortium of
Virtual Worlds Conference in Washington D.C.
[09:17] Valibrarian Gregg: Witnessing the numerous high quality
projects and involvement of the military and the government in virtual
worlds was validating for pioneers in the field of 3D immersive
learning. Meeting colleagues physically (after working for months or
years in a virtual environment) was intriguing because colleagues
realized they knew each other through that shared sense of presence
experienced in a virtual world.
[09:18] Valibrarian Gregg: The friendships formed are exactly like
those in rl. Anyone agree?

[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Totally!

[09:18] Buffy Beale: I sure do yes

[09:18] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Absolutely

[09:18] Panny Bakerly: Indeed

[09:18] Svea Morane: Perhaps even deeper than RL

[09:19] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 15-
Research on virtual worlds used for education, libraries, and museums
continues to expand. I am honored to work with a global community of
learners who bravely embrace new media while striving to maintain the
high standards of traditional librarianship and academic credibility.
[09:19] Valibrarian Gregg: I have a notecard with landmarks and
machinima links. IM me if you would like me to drop it to you. Zinnia
also has the notecard.

[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Who wants a notecard?

[09:20] Panny Bakerly: I do.

[09:20] Valibrarian Gregg: I would be happy to answer any questions.

[09:20] jodinicole8: yes please

[09:20] Robert (rzepczr): Me too, please.

[09:20] Svea Morane: please yes on the notecard

[09:20] LovePhillyChick: me too

Preservation and located in the Germantown neighborhood of Northwest
Philadelphia. Built as a country house by attorney Benjamin Chew,
Cliveden was completed in 1767 and was home to seven generations of
Chew family members. Cliveden has long been famous as the site of the
Battle of Germantown in 1777, as well as for its elegant architecture

[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: So we are putting together a list of those
ideas and instructors.
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: What would be wonderful is if you send me or
any of the Mentors a notecard with ideas and contacts.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Here are some ideas that were brought up.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: How to create a nonprofit
How to create a tax exempt in the US
NPC Office Operations
NPC Community Development
Nonprofit Governance
Doing Presentations in SL
Marketing Your Organization
How to create an event
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Some of these we have covered during past
Mentor Centrals.
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: So, that leads to today’s lesson!

[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: it would be great if we could start to
bring in topics we’ve done webinarson at TechSoup and have an extended
workshop here… for example social media marketing of events comes to
mind
[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: What do you think, Bulaklak and Alebez?
[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: just an idea
[08:57] alebez: i think that’s a good echo

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Great, Glitter.
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: We have discussed having some sessions other
times, so those might be the right fit for sure.
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: And, it would give more Techsoup staff access
to Second Life.

[08:58] Glitteractica Cookie: nice, let’s discuss the logistics later

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Super!
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, so how to create a notecard.
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you know how to create a notecard?

[08:59] Gentle Heron nods.

[08:59] Panny Bakerly raises her hand

[08:59] Coughran Mayo raises hand

[08:59] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yes

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Why is important to use notecards?

[08:59] Gentle Heron: Because the message persists!

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Right!

[08:59] Coughran Mayo: durable communication

[08:59] Panny Bakerly: I cant rely on my memory…

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: lol Penny

[09:00] Gentle Heron: Very good point, Panny.

[09:00] Coughran Mayo: consistent instructions

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you use notecards in your offices
or comm with others?

[09:00] Panny Bakerly: I do

[09:00] Gentle Heron does.

[09:00] Coughran Mayo: yes
[09:01] Coughran Mayo: notecard giver scripts are valuable

[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: Excellent!
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: very!
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: What can you put into a notecard?

[09:01] Gentle Heron: in addition to text, you can insert stuff like
landmarks, objects, other notecards…..

[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: Right!

[09:02] Gentle Heron: can’t insert calling cards, I found out.

[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: So, a notecard is more that just text.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: It will not get capped, like so many IMs and notices do.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: I find that I use notecards to keep notes for
myself, like Panny.

[09:02] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): the objects must be full perms
before you can copy to notecard… fyi

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: I also use them to communicate with others.

[09:03] Buffy Beale: We have a notecard giver at Bridges too

[09:03] Gentle Heron nods to any1

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Right, Magic!

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Full Perms!
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: I am always chanting Full Perms to my students.
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: So, very quick, now that our speaker has arrived.
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: when you open your inventory
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: you will see the little plus at the bottom
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: You click on that and choose New Notecard
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: You can title it right away

[09:05] KeishaTaylor: Hi everyone

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: If you missed a chance to, it will just be
called New Note.
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Welcome Keisha!
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Let’s get you started, please have a seat.

[09:05] KeishaTaylor: I think I am still loading 🙂

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: okay
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Please push the stand button at the bottom of
your screen.
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Then you can aim to sit up here with me.
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: So, once you have a new notecard, start typing!
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Remember to save!
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Okay
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: That is it!

Big Data for Development with Keisha Taylor of TechSoup Global

[09:06] Glitteractica Cookie: Welcome Keisha! How’s the weather in
London for you this evening?

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for joining us Keisha!

[09:07] KeishaTaylor: Well it started off cold and rainy, but now the
sun is shining 🙂

[09:07] jacmacaire Humby: I’m really sorry to go already.. I have to
run.. A very nice week-end to all..

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: I posted two of your websites you gave me up on
the front.
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Take care Jac!

[09:07] KeishaTaylor: ok Thanks Zinna

[09:07] jacmacaire Humby: Thanks Zinnia.. Bye

[09:08] KeishaTaylor: Hi everyone

[09:08] Gentle Heron: Hello Keisha.

[09:09] Dancers Yao: welcome

[09:09] Buffy Beale: welcome Keisha 🙂

[09:09] KeishaTaylor: Today I am just going to talk a little about
‘big data’ and what this means for nonprofits. Do you know what ‘big
data’ is?

[09:09] Serene Jewell: Data that won’t fit on my little computer?
[09:10] Serene Jewell: 🙂

[09:10] Buffy Beale: lol Serene

[09:10] KeishaTaylor: @ Serene – that is where the cloud comes in!

[09:11] Serene Jewell: Honestly, I hear the term all the time but have
never thought about exactly what it means. I assumed it means big
databases.

[09:13] KeishaTaylor: well big data refers to digital data which can
come from the sensors on products you use to your gps, mobile phones,
social media data
[09:13] KeishaTaylor: apologies my computer is a bit slow. I wish i could talk!
[09:13] KeishaTaylor: 🙂

[09:13] Panny Bakerly: do you mean multi-media data?

[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: We are all supporting you here, Keisha.

[09:14] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): 🙂

[09:14] Glitteractica Cookie: You are doing great keisha

[09:15] KeishaTaylor: that an much more. You are contributing to big
data right now

[09:15] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): I am reading the wikipedia
page… I think big data means data sets that are much larger than a
single database on a single system can feasibly run…. so big data
must run in a different architecture… entirely… parallel and
distributed… like Google uses to do instant searches of the entire
Internet

[09:16] Glitteractica Cookie: interesting… thx for reading that to us

[09:16] KeishaTaylor: your mobile phones are saying where you ar. i
recommend reading Mc Kinsey’s report on big data for a better
understanding. http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/mgi/research/technology_and_innovation/…
[09:17] KeishaTaylor: though it is not nonprofit specific it does
delve into what big data is.
[09:17] KeishaTaylor: big data can be used for development because
when all this data is gathered over time it can help in understanding
what is need and where and by whom.
[09:18] KeishaTaylor: do you kbnow Ushahidi?

[09:19] Gentle Heron: no

[09:19] Panny Bakerly: I don’t.

[09:19] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): http://ushahidi.com/

[09:19] KeishaTaylor: they have developed technology which is being
used to track what is going on in real-time and respond to disasters
http://ushahidi.com/

[09:19] Buffy Beale: I know of it yes, a tracking site for stats in a
way, such as an emergency

[09:20] KeishaTaylor: @magic then there is also Google flu trends.
that uses big data (in this case from Google to look at if there may
be a flu outbreak
[09:21] KeishaTaylor: at the internation level the UN Global Pulse is
also looking into working on data philanthropy. they want
coorporations to give data that they gather when people use their
technology to solve global and community problems

[09:22] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): yes, that’s right… data such
as purchases of over-the-counter drugs are tracked and analyzed.. for
disease outbreaks… similar apps in agriculture … BioSurveillance

[09:22] KeishaTaylor: http://www.unglobalpulse.org/

[09:22] Panny Bakerly: Are there any privacy issues there?

[09:22] Gentle Heron: HAHAHA sure Panny, but “they” know you asked that!

[09:23] KeishaTaylor: @panny – there are privacy issues

[09:23] Eliza (eliza.madrigal) laughs

[09:23] KeishaTaylor:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/apr/22/big-data-privacy-inform…

[09:23] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): most of the public data sets
are de-identified… all privacy info removed

[09:24] KeishaTaylor: a supermarket sent information to a girl who was
pregnant before she even told her parents because the track purchases
and target customers based on this

[09:24] bulaklak: I remember that story.
[09:25] bulaklak: They sent her diaper and formula coupons.

[09:25] KeishaTaylor: @magic a lot of it is de-identfied – but there
is a possiblity that the more people provide data t more easily it is
to reidentify people

[09:25] Panny Bakerly: guess they lost a customer

[09:26] KeishaTaylor: which is why nonprofits need to start small and
engage with their communities. find out what problems they want to
solve and then work to get data which can help them address it

[09:26] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): some companies are taking
voter records and matching them with di-identified data… to
re-identify you… theoretically … they can always do that.. it’s
the “statistical database problem”

[09:27] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): wow

[09:27] KeishaTaylor: for sure there will be a lot of use of data for
the upcoming US elections
[09:28] KeishaTaylor:
http://www.campaignsandelections.com/print/315777/big-data-is-a-big-fact…

[09:28] Serene Jewell: Is there a set of big data that allows regular
people to track the companies that are tracking us?

[09:28] KeishaTaylor: this now brings me to open data

[09:28] Buffy Beale: good question Serene

[09:30] KeishaTaylor: there are tools that can be used to gather and
track big data, but not really to track the companies that are
tracking us

[09:30] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): there are about 20,000
Internet tracking companies…. huge industry…
[09:30] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): invisible… muwah

[09:31] KeishaTaylor: the open data movement is aiming fo r as much
transparency and openess as possible though. Governments have started
releaseing data in downloadable formats so people can do interesting
things with it.
[09:32] KeishaTaylor: you can have a look at what data is available
from your government online. Have a look here for some resources
http://opengovernmentdata.org/data/catalogues/

[09:32] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): Wikipedia.. about Open Data
Movement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_data

[09:33] KeishaTaylor: you can take the opportunity to find out if
there is information there that can help you. that you can combine
with your own data to visualise and tell compelling stories
[09:33] KeishaTaylor: some of the apps that you might use are being
built from the governments open data
[09:33] KeishaTaylor: and from crowdsourc
[09:34] KeishaTaylor: crowdsourcing
[09:34] KeishaTaylor: do you know what crowdsourcing is?

[09:34] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): wikipedia is example

[09:34] Gentle Heron: “the wisdom of the crowd”

[09:36] KeishaTaylor: yes people can sometimes find things to do with
your data that you never could have dreamt about.
[09:36] KeishaTaylor: i think i am out of time now. i only just
scratched the surface

[09:36] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): are there cloud resources
available to nonprofits? like hadoop installations?

[09:36] Buffy Beale: interesting topic Keisha thanks

[09:36] KeishaTaylor: ican send you some stuff on this

[09:37] bulaklak: I think the challenge for a lot of nonprofits will
be to have someone on staff who can wade through all the data the
gov’t releases and parse it, know what is valuable, and figure out how
to make it useful.

[09:37] KeishaTaylor: and if you send me any questions. Hadoop is one
popular toole

[09:37] Serene Jewell: Thank you for the links, Keisha, they are very
interesting.

[09:37] KeishaTaylor: @bulaklak that is true

[09:37] bulaklak: that will likely become a new track within nonprofit
communications careers.

[09:37] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): yes great talk… I learned
alot… thank you!

[09:37] bulaklak: yes, really enjoyed this talk, Keisha!

[09:38] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): <— may want to teach a class
on this some day!

[09:38] Buffy Beale: yay a1 that would be great

[09:38] bulaklak: You are welcome to come back here any time and give
us more information as it becomes available.

[09:38] Gentle Heron: Thanks Keisha. How do you anticipate nonprofits
using this massive amount of data?

[09:38] KeishaTaylor: i will send you some information ia Zinnia

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: Perfect
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: We can post that on the blog with links.
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: There is so much! Right?

[09:39] Ethelred Weatherwax: Buklak — the challenge for many
non-profits is that they have no staff, much less a dedicated IT
person.

[09:39] bulaklak: @Magic that would be great. I think a lot of us
nonprofits communications professionals would like to know more about
how to read and use data effectively but don’t know where to start.

[09:39] KeishaTaylor: they have to think small i think, and make sure
that the data they need is part of the big data landscape

[09:39] Buffy Beale: how true Eth it sure is in my case

[09:39] Gentle Heron agrees with Ethelred.

[09:39] KeishaTaylor: i can also send a list of free visualisation tools

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: great!

[09:39] bulaklak: We’ve been trained in how to influence the media but
this is a whole other ballgame.

[09:40] KeishaTaylor: andme other practcal information. I think my
time is up. but if you have any final questions let me know

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Keisha is a wealth of data herself!

[09:40] bulaklak: Yes!

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Any questions before we go to Open Mic?

[09:40] Serene Jewell: Thanks so much for the info, Keisha.

[09:41] KeishaTaylor: Thank you guys for listening! I really enjoyed
it. It is my first time too!

[09:41] Glitteractica Cookie: Keisha, please come back to a future NPC meeting

[09:41] bulaklak: Yes, thank you, Keisha. And please do come back
again. We’d love to hear more whenever you would like to stop by.

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Super!

[09:41] Buffy Beale: yay Keisha come join the fun here too at the gatherings

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you very much Keisha!

[09:41] Dancers Yao: thanks…very helpful

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: She did great just starting yesterday in SL.

[09:42] Glitteractica Cookie: amazing

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you so much!

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: Okay!

[09:42] Buffy Beale: lol I’ll say, even sitting can be difficult so
well done Keisha!

[09:42] KeishaTaylor: @buffy it did take a while to sort out how to sit!
[09:42] KeishaTaylor: at least i still have myclothes on

[09:43] Buffy Beale: lol me too when I started.. sitting I mean

Open Mic / Announcements

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: Who has an Open Mic Announcement?

[09:43] Buffy Beale: Hand up

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: Super, Buffy! Go for it!

[09:44] Buffy Beale: thanks Z
[09:44] Buffy Beale: I think the NPC is coming up to our 5th
anniversary and wondered if we would like to have a grand, the
grandest of all events?
[09:44] Buffy Beale: or is it 6, I forget now
[09:45] Buffy Beale: just putting it out there for discussion as the
time goes quickly

[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: Good idea

[09:45] Buffy Beale: that’s all I wanted to say but it would be nice
to mark the celebration

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, when would that be?

[09:46] Buffy Beale: I think it’s in August?

[09:46] Brena Benoir: Sounds right Buffy
[09:46] Brena Benoir: Maybe a ball or something?

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, a big ball.

[09:46] Buffy Beale: sure that would be fun

[09:47] Zinnia Zauber: It would be important that everyone be part of it.

[09:47] Buffy Beale: we can talk about it at the mentor’s meeting

[09:47] Brena Benoir: are there others that would interested in being
part of the team to make that happen?

[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, it needs to be a team.
[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: Anyone want to join Buffy on this important event?

[09:48] Buffy Beale: any1 did a great session once on how to organize an event

[09:48] Brena Benoir: TEAM=Together Everyone Accomplishes More

[09:48] Buffy Beale: maybe we could get a repeat of that
[09:49] Buffy Beale: The NPC is what we make of it not just show up
and sit our avatars for a few hours once a week

[09:49] Brena Benoir: I would be willing to be part of a team to help
put a celebration together

[09:49] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, let’s get some words and dates figured out
and make a call for help.

[09:49] Buffy Beale: and it always seems to be the same people so it
would be great if we could see some new faces helping

[09:50] Zinnia Zauber: Glitter, don’t you think this would be a boom
for marketing TechSoup?

[09:50] Buffy Beale: ok Z sounds great

[09:51] Glitteractica Cookie: sorry, missed that

[09:51] Buffy Beale: maybe we could add this to the MOU… participate
on at least one team for an event lol

[09:51] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, good idea

[09:51] Brena Benoir: I think that sounds like a good idea Buffy

[09:51] Zinnia Zauber: We are discussing celebrating NPC’s birthday in August.

[09:51] Buffy Beale: I do understand time is hard for a lot of folks,
me included lately so no pressure

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: I think it would be a great marketing moment
for the orgs and TechSoup.

[09:52] Brena Benoir: It’s also a great opportunity to forge more
networks and friendships as well

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: Just checking, does anyone else have an announcement?

[09:52] Glitteractica Cookie: We could talk more about the idea later,
and look into options. I’m not sure about timing with all the other
stuff we are doing in August right now, but i’m open to looking into
it

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, great!

[09:53] Buffy Beale: we could make it in September, the idea is not to
let it pass without celebrating it

[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: yes we could

[09:53] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): Thanks Zinnia, everyone :::waves::::

[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Eliza!

[09:53] Buffy Beale: bye Eliza

[09:53] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): bye for now

[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: take care
[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: Okay
[09:54] Zinnia Zauber: Let’s go with our links to connect and events to attend!

[09:54] Chayenn: i would love to be part of but for now PY1 is

TechSoup Announcements

[08:45] Glitteractica Cookie: So… with that… Bulaklak, do you have any updates from our end of things at TechSoup?
[08:45] bulaklak: Yes!
[08:45] bulaklak: Thank you.
[08:46] bulaklak: So, as some of you may know, Twitter rocked the world yesterday by going out for a stunning 45 minutes.
[08:46] bulaklak: Incidentally, this was right during our scheduled tweet chat on how NGOs use data.
[08:46] bulaklak: So we are rescheduling the #npdata tweet chat for Wednesday, June 27 at 10am PT
[08:46] bulaklak: Read all about it here, as well as how to participate
[08:47] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LXmJnq
[08:47] bulaklak: We partnered with our London office to put this one together so it should be a good mix of people from different parts of the world. We hope you can come!
[08:48] bulaklak: One other announcement. June 30 is just a little over a week away. And that is Fiscal Year End for TechSoup as well as many of our donor partners.
[08:48] bulaklak: If you think you have not gotten your allotment of software donations for 2011, get ’em before June 30!
[08:48] bulaklak: More info on that here
[08:49] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LgnFqX
[08:49] bulaklak: Oh! And one other heads up.
[08:50] bulaklak: We will not be streaming next week’s OCTRIBE into Second Life.
[08:50] Buffy Beale: awww
[08:50] bulaklak: Our wonderful friend and colleague is off getting super smart at Singularity University.
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: Due to low attendance at the last few OCTRIBE meetups
[08:50] bulaklak: Oh, and that.
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: Heh
[08:50] Ozma Malibu: sorry to break in but – Message from Zinnia: she sends everyone her best, and is giving a lecture at her 20th college reunion this morning.
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: that is nice
[08:50] Ozma Malibu: so that explains it 🙂
[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: Thanks Oz
[08:51] bulaklak: And by our wonderful friend and colleague I mean InKenzo. So do wish her well with all her awesome new learning.
[08:51] Ozma Malibu: Rhiannon is also at Singularity. I am amazed that I know 2 people there.
[08:51] Ozma Malibu: both deserve it!!
[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: Thanks Bulaklak… Alebez, do you have any additional announcements?
[08:52] bulaklak: You can still attend OCTRIBE by using the Adobe Connect link we will provide.
[08:52] Ozma Malibu: I have such smart friends.
[08:52] alebez: no, bulaklak hit em’!
[08:52] bulaklak: So the virtual component continues at least in one way!
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, thanks for the updates

Mentors Central

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, so now we’re off to Mentor’s Central. Do our mentors have updates today?
[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: can the mentors take the stage?
[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: heeellllaauuuooo??
[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: Ah, there we go
[08:54] Jen: I’ll take it
[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: Thnks Jen
[08:54] Jen: I had a quick topic, but forgot
[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: can you update the group on what the mentors are? What they do?
[08:55] Jen: I’m looking into workshops outside this meeting
[08:55] Jen: Mentors are people who volunteer to assist with SL functions
[08:55] Jen: We may also have RL expertise to impart as well
[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: The weekly mentor’s meeting happens right after this meeting, at 10am SLT
[08:56] Jen: We usually meet immediately after this meeting
[08:56] Jen: Thanks Glitter
[08:56] Jen: I’m interested in what topics you might like to have that might take longer than we have time for in this meeting
[08:57] Jen: My idea is like a Leadership Conference
[08:57] Jen: So if you have topics please forward them to me
[08:57] Jen: I have one I did in two fridays on office operation
[08:58] Jen: Any questions for Mentors?
[08:58] Jen: As far as I know we’re still planning to meet after the main meeting
[08:58] Glitteractica Cookie: Folks can also email nonprofitcommons@techsoup.org and we will forward the questions to the mentors, if they think of one later
[08:58] Jen: Or IM me any time
[08:59] Jen: Be happy to hear from you
[08:59] Hour Destiny: Some of us are also available via Twitter.
[08:59] CarmenLittleFawn: ok 🙂
[08:59] Glitteractica Cookie: Thanks for your continued volunteer service, mentors
[08:59] CarmenLittleFawn: ty
[08:59] Jen: We’re here to answer the question, What do you need to Know?
[08:59] Buffy Beale: thanks Jenelle
[08:59] Jen: OK, back to our regularly scheduled meeting
[08:59] Glitteractica Cookie: there is a twitter list of all NPC twitter handles. Bullaklak, is that on the @npsl twitter account page?
[08:59] Glitteractica Cookie: if not, it should be
[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: (good project for volunteer or for zinnia)
[09:00] bulaklak: I will check.
[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, with that…. we have a speaker now
[09:00] bulaklak: But yes, if it’s not, I’ll make it happen.
[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: thanks pal

Machinimart with Gaberoonie Szondi / Gabe Salgado

[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: Now, I’m happy to bring you all (well, technically, Zinnia did the work, but I’m happy to announce) Gaberoonie Szondi / Gabe speaking about Machinimart !!
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: Gabe, please take a seat upfront
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: Give it up y’all!
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: WELCOME!!
[09:01] bulaklak: Welcome, Gabe!
[09:01] alebez: wahoo, gabe. welcome.
[09:01] CarmenLittleFawn: welcome 🙂
[09:01] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: thank you 🙂
[09:02] Jen: ********APPPLLLAAAUUUSSSEEE********
[09:02] Buffy Beale: Cheering!!
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: =^.^= Meow!
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: =^.^= Meow!
[09:02] bulaklak: lol
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i’m really amazed to see how much goes on here, and what you all do
[09:02] CarmenLittleFawn: ggiggles
[09:02] Dancers Yao: welcome
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: (it’s my one trick)
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: each and every one
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so much, brought together in one place
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, my name’s Gabe Salgado in RL and I work with a company called Machinimart
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i worked for many years in nonprofit education
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: after having studied computer science and graphic design in college
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I started designing informal educational curricula
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i was very passionate about it
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: education meant a lot to me, reaching young people in ways that are relevant to them
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but i sort of hit a wall
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i started working with cultural material, music, video etc
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: media related content that was meaningful to young people
[09:05] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but I will never forget the time when I tried to roll out a new video curriculum, only to discover that the agencies I worked with refused to update to the current version of Quicktime…
[09:05] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: meaning they could not view my videos
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, basically, that was the tension between technology and education.
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: shortly afterwards, I joined a virtual world startup
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: this was in 2007, when there was still a lot of hype about SL.
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and a lot of investment in virtual worlds
[09:07] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: ever since, I have been involved in SL and other virtual worlds
[09:07] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: today, Machinimart does primarily 3 things.
[09:07] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: one is, machinima production as an artistic endeavor.
[09:08] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: secondly, we have several brands in SL, several franchises with lines of products
[09:08] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: thirdly, we do development of educational projects in SL.
[09:08] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the first (machinima) is not profitable at all, and it is purely artistic
[09:09] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the second (stores in SL) is fairly profitable, and is actually very interesting
[09:09] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: it’s not a major source of income, but we find it amazing that people are willing to pay for virtual goods….
[09:10] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the third (educational projects in SL) is what really consumes our time.
[09:10] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: because what we’re really concerned with, is:
[09:10] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: how can we harness the power of SL to reach people who are not familiar with SL?
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: with our educational projects, we have two different categories
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: corporate and academic
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: examples.
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: for corporate, we do training for companies
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: new staff learn their jobs by performing them virtually in SL
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: for academic, here we get very experimental
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: build immersive environments as we are all familiar with here, and create an experience for students
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: where every interaction is a learning experience.
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I’m going to talk about the challenges that come with working in SL.
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: first of all, why SL? there are other platforms, right? why would anyone choose to learn in SL?
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: anyone?
[09:13] Buffy Beale: it’s immersive?
[09:13] Ozma Malibu: it’s fun
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, but warcraft is immersive, too, right?
[09:13] Hour Destiny: It’s where most of the people are that are in virtual worlds.
[09:13] Hour Destiny: Other than in MMOs.
[09:13] Buffy Beale: we can make things and take photos
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and Grand Theft Auto is fun.
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so what is it about SL?
[09:14] Buffy Beale: we can make money?
[09:14] Hour Destiny: One can also build and SL seems to have the best tools for that so far.
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, Hour
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: building
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: not only can anyone who has the will come here and build
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but professionals can lift something up here very fast
[09:15] Carl Solutionary: SL is a mature market ecosystem… you can buy anything.. and it’s on the cheap
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: that’s another thing: assets
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you can buy what you need when you don’t have the time to make it
[09:15] Glitteractica Cookie: Yes, I chose to launch the techsoup nonprofit community in SL b/c it had critical mass, aong the virtual environs that allowed users to be flexible and create their own content
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: or you can get it open source
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: rezz it, there it is
[09:15] Glitteractica Cookie: this is the techsoup nonprofit community in SL, in case you didn’t know
[09:16] Glitteractica Cookie: we meet ppl where they are at
[09:16] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: a huge, rich world. you can build what you need, and you can buy other items to rez.
[09:16] Glitteractica Cookie: also, i was under the assumption that the platform would better integrate web on a prim, but that hasn’t really been the case so far, very well
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, I call this rapid prototyping. Let’s say an agency in RL wants to do something in a virtual world. in many cases, you can prototype it for them in just a few hours!
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and in amazing quality sometimes.
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: SL as a virtual world platform has that X-Factor.
[09:17] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, and the three dimensional aspects are found in SL but not many other spaces allow you to walk through an experience
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, exactly
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: totally immersive
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so now, the bad news
[09:18] Glitteractica Cookie: yes….?”
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: one of them is… the interface. the viewer.
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I will come back to this
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but suffice it to say
[09:18] Hour Destiny: Horrible infrastructure and customer service?
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: most of what you see on your viewer, the interface
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: most of those controls
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: are not useful to everyday, RL people… casual users
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: students
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the people you’re trying to reaach.
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i will come back to the viewer issue later.
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: secondly is the time
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the time it takes to learn
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and the time it takes to use
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: time takes on a whole new meaning in SL
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and something that people familiar with and devoted to SL have in common is they recognize this
[09:19] Hour Destiny: Learning curve.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, it takes time to learn.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hours to learn the basics
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hundreds of hours to learn advanced things…
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but not just that.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: when you log in, time slows to a crawl
[09:20] Hour Destiny: I’m not the only Hour? 🙂 Sorry, couldn’t resist.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: takes up to a minute to log in…
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hehe
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: 😀
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and once you’re in, people take the time to aclimate…
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: check IMs, check your outfit, all that…
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: time takes on a meaning that most people I know in RL aren’t willing to take
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: Most of all, this might be our biggest challenge:
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I’ve found that people familiar with SL, those who know its strengths
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: often are baffled by how “RL people” have no patience for SL’s shortcomings.
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so there is a gap.
[09:22] CarmenLittleFawn: heheheh true
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, it takes time to rez, yes, you have to rebake, you might crash, you might have to relog…
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we understand that
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the rest of the world doesn’t have the patience for it.
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so they miss out.
[09:23] CarynTopia Silvercloud: I am experiencing that with my board
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: my concern is, how do we bridge that gap?
[09:23] CarmenLittleFawn: yes
[09:23] bulaklak: I remember my early experience with trying to buy new clothes and winding up wearing a giant box. I was ready to quit forever.
[09:24] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: The same way that SL people are forgiving of the learning curve, forgiving of the time it takes…
[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: or worse, accidently flashing your colleagues and experiencing virtual shame and humilation
[09:24] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we go a bit overboard. we forgive what is unforgivable to casual users… the ones who otherwise could really benefit from an experience here!
[09:25] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so i’ll give a case study
[09:25] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: Machinimart has been successful in bringing “RL people” (for lack of a better term) into SL for learning experiences
[09:25] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: in many cases.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: get them in, up and running, in 10 minutes, all the benefits, none of the frustrations…
[09:26] Hour Destiny: It’s usually easier to forgive what you understand better.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, that’s right.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the bottom line is, we know the benefits. so it’s all worth it to us to work through.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but there has to be a middle ground right?
[09:26] CarmenLittleFawn: yes
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: what if we could cut the frustrations?
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: get people straight in, and yes, demand that they learn some new skills, but really reduce the demand on them… and show the benefits.
[09:27] Hour Destiny: Put the Lindens in a dunking booth?
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hehe
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: by the way
[09:27] CarynTopia Silvercloud: that would be great!
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, the Lindens are the elephant in the room.
[09:27] Ricken Flow: you would have the find the lindens first lol
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: occasionally they make a major move that really improves useability.
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: more often than not, they miss the mark.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they’re not 100% guilty.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: again, “SL people” tend to be forgiving of the bugs, the frustrations…
[09:28] Hour Destiny: They are certainly guilty of very lousy customer service.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: which sends the wrong message to LL. so they skimp.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and yes, Hour, they try but mostly fail at customer service.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i just accept this reality as it is.
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: sometimes they REALLY try
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: mostly it seems like they don’t… but it is what it is.
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so how do we make it work?
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hello Betsy, speak of the devil 😀
[09:29] Carl Solutionary: speak of the Lindens… wow! great timing Betsy!
[09:29] Betsy Linden: 🙂
[09:29] Hour Destiny: 1.5+ years and counting and no response to a paying customer is unacceptable.
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hehe
[09:29] Glitteractica Cookie: I just TPd a Linden in
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니:    o/
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니:      ||   Yay!
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니:     /
[09:29] Glitteractica Cookie: Betsy has offered to speak at a future meeting
[09:30] Glitteractica Cookie: but she’s not the guest today
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so I will take one case of how we were able to make this work with high school students
[09:30] Glitteractica Cookie: I just wanted to give her asense of how we run meting
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: how we succeeded, and how we failed.
[09:30] Betsy Linden: glad to be here , ty
[09:30] CarmenLittleFawn: Hello 🙂 Betsy
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i felt I had a good grasp on how they would react and behave in the environment.
[09:30] Hour Destiny: Hello, Betsy.
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we even created a custom viewer
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: with only the functions they needed.
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: This was a well-funded project.
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: good people working on it!
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and we felt we took every concern into consideration.
[09:31] Glitteractica Cookie: who was the project for?
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: had a welcome area (we have registration API)
[09:31] Ricken Flow: ( i think i worked on that project with Gabe on the teen grid
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: oh, by the way, unfortunately, I’m under NDA for all my projects
[09:32] Glitteractica Cookie: oh ok, np
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and yeah, Ricken, I worked on the old teen grid, so we might have worked together lol
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so we had this great program, a custom viewer, the students could use it.
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: thought we took everything into consideration
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: a set of activities broken up by unit
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: lessones
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: *lessons
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so one lesson was a puzzle.
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: an educator designed it, not familiar with SL, and we implemented it.
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: for the puzzle, the students need to find objects in a room.
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you get a hint
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: “find an object that does this…. “
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you click on the object
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: if you get the right one, you have to find the next one…
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: until you find them all.
[09:34] Hour Destiny: Hidden object puzzle.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes!
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i thought it was a great idea.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i’ve played games like that
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: kids are familiar with them
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: it’s fun.
[09:34] Hour Destiny: I have a bunch of those on my iPhone.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes. i’ve played iphone games with that also.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so we scripted it
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and before the students come to play it, we test it, of course.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you have to test it
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we TPed people in to test….
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i tested it
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we had at least 12 people test it, say “yeah!” thumbs up, it works.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so the day comes, the students come in… and it breaks.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I have no idea what’s going on.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: all the students are complaining
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they’re frustrated
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they’re doing the right thing.
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: when you’re doing the right thing, and you’re told it’s wrong, it can be infuriating.
[09:36] Jen: Murphy’s Law
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and this project went so well up to now!
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the teachers are not happy
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: which is to say nothing of the funders.
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: now, I will show you a picture.
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: one moment…
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8005/7419354548_6de70624d9_b.jpg
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: this is the students, in the room
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: looking for objects
[09:37] jacmacaire Humby: Sorry I have to go.. To all a very nice week-end.. 🙂
[09:37] Chayenn: bye jac
[09:37] CarmenLittleFawn: u also Jac bye
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: by jac, thanx 😀
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: does anyone notice anything about the picture?
[09:38] jacmacaire Humby: Bye everyone..
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i was there, by the way… only in retrospect do I realize the problem.
[09:38] Carl Solutionary: looks laggy… and I bet the objects are getting clicked alot
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i was watching this happen…
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: YES
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: objects clicked a lot.
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: why?
[09:38] Hour Destiny: What if more than one person clicks on the same object?
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: because people are used to instant feedback.
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: instantaneous gratification.
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: whereas people who are used to SL are accustomed to clicking, waiting…
[09:39] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you click… and then… wait for it… wait for it… there it is!
[09:39] Hour Destiny: And if someone sees someone else clicking on something, they’ll click it too. Follow The Leader type of thing.
[09:39] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: these people did great in our environment, until this challenge. where they had to wait 2 (gasp!) or more seconds for a response
[09:39] Buffy Beale: lol
[09:39] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: 5 seconds is a LOT for casual users
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: think how many people have dropped SL altogether in less than 5 seconds!
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but we are all used to the wait.
[09:40] Hour Destiny: ~8 seconds for webpages.
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i’m using an example of where I failed to anticipate the behavior of RL students to illutrate our challenge
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: now, really, the issue here was not just the wait… it was the fact that they POUNDED
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: these objects with clicks
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: each one causing more lag
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and also resetting the game!

[09:41] Hour Destiny: DDOS attack. 😀

[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the way we scripted it, you click an object, and ok, you clicked it… click again, and it’s the wrong object…
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i click “broom”, it expects me to click “bucket” next
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but
[09:42] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i click “broom” 5 times… it resets the game for me five times.
[09:42] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: this is the gap between casual users (the people we want to reach with our good work) and those who are familiar with SL
[09:42] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: everything you know, everything you did to customize your avatar and to build your beautiful office here in this sim…
[09:43] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: is beyond the reach of average people… yet they have so much to benefit could they get just 20 minutes of learning here!

[09:43] Carl Solutionary: I’m wondering if this approach would work: touch_start() { llSay(0,”Congratulations! You have instant gratification…Please WAIT 5 seconds for your PRIZE to arrive! And next hint!” }

[09:44] Hour Destiny: Heh.

[09:44] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: it could… but guess what… people don’t pay attention to notifications!
[09:44] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they just don’t.

[09:44] Ricken Flow: even before that i had some people that never been into a virtual world and was exciting about the project then they seen the size of the viewer and wouldnt download it said it was too big of a file for the computer
[09:44] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we’re “trained” to out of habit, but there are so many challenges… we’re familiar with it. we can’t expect others to be.
[09:45] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, i hope this got you thinking… we need to design experiences for people without expecting them to go through what we’ve gone through.
[09:45] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: because, bluntly, they won’t.
Open Mic / Announcements

[09:46] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, so we need to move into open Mic announceents now, any closing remarks?

[09:46] bulaklak: Yes, all great stuff! And potentially also raising the bar for everyone’s expectations, too, not just newbies.

[09:46] Jen: raises hand

[09:46] Hour Destiny: Poor education/learning, poor critical thinking skills, lack of experience/knowledge, unrealistic expectations, and likely an entitlement philosophy, etc.

[09:46] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, thanks Gabe! Find him on twitter at @machinimart
[09:47] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, then we are ready for announcements to the larger group!

He has been involved in virtual world technology since 2007 and has also developed many highly acclaimed programs on the Second Life Teen Grid, reaching students in schools and educational programs around the world. [08:41] Glitteractica Cookie: WHAAA??!

[08:41] bulaklak: Howdy, folks!

[08:41] Buffy Beale: yay bulaklak

[08:41] CarmenLittleFawn: Hello

[08:41] bulaklak: I hope everyone is enjoying their Fridays thus far.
[08:41] bulaklak: We’ve got a lot of great events on the horizon at TechSoup

[08:41] Nany (nany.kayo): I am!

[08:42] bulaklak: But first I wanted to let you all know that the end
of our fiscal year is coming up at the end of this month

[08:42] Hour Destiny: Does TechSoup order from TechSoup? 😀

[08:42] bulaklak: What does that mean? It means that if you haven’t
yet maxed out your 2011 allotment of TechSoup donations, there is
still time!
[08:43] bulaklak: Many of our donor partners hit the reset button on
July 1, so request before then to make sure you are getting everything
you are entitled to for this year.
[08:43] bulaklak: (And then start requesting again on July 1. Hehe.)
[08:44] bulaklak: Hour, we don’t actually. We do get a certain
allotment of software from our donor partners but it’s not through the
donation program.
[08:44] bulaklak: At any rate, there is a lot more info on fiscal year end here
[08:45] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LgnFqX
[08:45] bulaklak: Okie doke on to events.
[08:45] bulaklak: Next week, we are co-producing a webinar with the
folks from Eventbrite and Social Media for Nonprofits
[08:45] bulaklak: You will be able to learn how to use social media to
get the most out of your events
[08:46] bulaklak: Join us on June 20 for that one, at 11am Pacific.
Register here: http://bit.ly/MCmeSC
[08:47] bulaklak: The following day, June 21, we are having a
cross-timezone tweet chat on the topic of data. More and more it’s
becoming apparent how crucial it is that we as social benefit orgs are
getting our data out there in front of decision makers
[08:47] bulaklak: This tweet chat will talk about how you can use your
org’s data to become part of that conversation
[08:47] bulaklak: This blog explains more, as well as how to join a
tweet chat in case that’s new to you
[08:48] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LXmJnq
[08:48] Hour Destiny: “Dashboard Your Data” could be the name of it.
[08:48] bulaklak: The hashtag is #npdata and we’ll be convening at 10am Pacific
[08:48] bulaklak: That’s a great idea, Hour. We are usually not so
creative with titles at TechSoup. We’re kinda straightforward. But I
love your suggestion.
[08:48] bulaklak: Okay folks, that’s all I’ve got for today!

[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: good stuff

[08:48] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!

[08:48] bulaklak: Thank you for listening and enjoy the rest of the meeting.

[08:49] CarmenLittleFawn: ty

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: Glitter, you wanted to share as well, please.

[08:49] bulaklak: Oh!

[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: Sure

[08:49] bulaklak: Sorry I had one last announcement

[08:49] bulaklak: But I can wait

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: You guys arm wrestle for it.

[08:49] bulaklak: LOL

[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: I just wanted to say, first of all,
athat we are all happy to have Zinnia on board as our interim
community manager, as much as we miss Rik
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: (Bulaklak, just a sec)

[08:50] Chayenn: yes we are

[08:50] bulaklak: Yay, Zinnia!

[08:50] Chayenn: thank u zinnia

[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: and we have a few opportuntiies to build
on past systems that may need we re-examining

[08:50] trichetriche: welcome

[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: so, for example, the NPC group versus
the TechSoup inworld group

[08:50] CarmenLittleFawn: congrats Zinnia

[08:51] Brena Benoir: Woot Zinnia!

[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: we have two groups, one for the
community and the other (the nonprofitcommons group) is for “resident”
members who have offices
[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: the techsoup group is for the larger community

[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: we can re-examine if this arrnagement
still makes sense, but I wanted to at least clarify how it is
currently
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: so you all can know that the Nonprofit
commons group is supposed to be for resident information, and
informataion pertaining to more involved members and mentors, etc
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: the techsoup group was originally
intended for larger community stuff
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: i would be interested in conflating
these if that were possible and made sense
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: And Zinnia and I will discuss this

[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: but for now, let’s just keep that in
mind, so we all know what the community is behind each group
[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: That’s all for me

[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Glitter!

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: Bulaklak… you were starting to say?
[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: (you’re welcome)

[08:53] bulaklak: Yes, I would like to welcome our newest team member
trichetriche

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: oh yes

[08:53] bulaklak: This is her first time inworld today

[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: woo hoo welcome trichtriche

[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: Welcome!

[08:54] alebez: wahooo! trichetriche

[08:54] CarmenLittleFawn: hello trichetriche welcome

[08:54] Panny Bakerly: Hi ya!

[08:54] trichetriche: Thanks you! Everyone has been so sweet. Very cool

[08:54] jacmacaire Humby: welcome.. 🙂

[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: can yo ucome down to the front, so folks
can see you?

[08:54] Serene Jewell: Hi tri

[08:54] bulaklak: I believe she is having some rezzing issues (not
uncommon at first, I remember how awkward it was for me at first!) so
please give her a warm welcome

[08:54] Buffy Beale: yayy trichetriche

[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: Sally S. Cherry, Baltimore, MD

[08:54] trichetriche: I’m struggling a bit with my avatar
[08:54] trichetriche: 🙁

[08:54] Hour Destiny: Hello, trichetriche. I’m a Morris of all trades.

[08:54] bulaklak: We’ll work with you on that!

[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: if you right click on stool next to
bulaklak you can sit there

[08:54] trichetriche: once I get the hang of it I’ll get on over there

[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: We all understand and are here to help!

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: just right click on that stool and select sit here

[08:55] trichetriche: I’m also having graphic issues

[08:55] bulaklak: I think maybe she can’t see the stools right now, just water

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: ah, it happens

[08:55] trichetriche: so I’m not able to see them

[08:55] Serene Jewell: We’ve all been through it.

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: oh, ok no prob

[08:55] bulaklak: At any rate, trichetriche if you want to give a
brief description of your work at TechSoup

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, we’ve all been there

[08:56] trichetriche: Sure, I don’t want to be disruptive so I’m happy
to wait till the end

[08:57] bulaklak: Okay we can wait and do that during the
announcements so you can tell everyone about the stories you are
gathering.
[08:57] bulaklak: Moving on for now . . .
[08:57] bulaklak: Oops I meant open mic

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: We look forward to learning more!

[08:57] bulaklak: Anyway, take it away Zinnia

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!

Mentor Central and Intellectual Property Respect – A Virtual Artist’s Perspective with Zinnia Zauber / Renne Emiko Brock-Richmond of Sequim Humanities and Arts Alliance

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: The good news is that Mentors Central blends in
with my talk today.

[08:58] Sarvana Haalan: woot!!

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Before I start, I want to remind everyone that
the NPC Mentors are here to help you out and we do mini lessons and
share during Mentor Central.

[08:59] Buffy Beale: cheering for youZ!

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: So! Let’s get started!
[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Intellectual Property Respect – A Virtual
Artist’s Perspective with Zinnia Zauber
[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: You can find the slides here for later…

http://www.slideshare.net/renneemiko/intellectual-property-respect-a-vir…

[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I am an artist, instructor, and superhero
promoting the importance of creative education and community
participation in the arts that are active and inclusive.
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I teach art, computer, digital media, and
social media use through Peninsula College, as a Lecturer and
Education Mentor for the University of Washington Certificate in
Virtual Worlds Program, and conduct workshops for TechSoup’s Nonprofit
Commons on branding, marketing, event production, and social media
networking.
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I create art, apparel, and virtual goods that
embrace the empowerment of brilliant hues, individualism, and
acceptance.
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I am thankful to get to share with you all today!

[09:02] Sarvana Haalan: Wooot…. Zinnia!!!!

[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: Disclaimer: I am an artist, instructor, and
Arts advocate, not a lawyer. The information contained in this
presentation is provided for informational purposes only, and should
not be construed as legal advice on any subject matter.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: I can be heavy handed when it comes to
Intellectual Property Respect because I have had my work stolen – at a
young age – and I used to run an artists’ resource office for the
nonprofit Artists’ Equity.

[09:02] Ethelred Weatherwax: You’re sounding like a lawye!

[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: lol Eth!
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: It is important to me and I am thankful you are
interested in learning more.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: Why do people not recognize the rights of
creative people?
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: It is a simple issue of lack of respect for the
professions of those who create. It is a legitimate job with results
that last long after a civilization has ended.
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Everything you interact with that is human made
has art, design, culture, and invention embedded in it. Thank you for
supporting creative expression and valuing those who create it!
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: You will find that I ask you questions along the way…
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Encourage the Dos and the Do Not’s through
responsible and respective behavior.
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: Lead by example.
Claiming ignorance is unacceptable.

[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: A great resource online about legal information
is http://www.nolo.com
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: Or find your local lawyer for the Arts –
http://www.law-arts.org/

[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: What do you value or earn?

Respect, Self-worth, Money
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: What do you get in return?
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: Recognition for your accomplishments,
admiration from your peers, friendship, and cool stuff.
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Do you own your efforts?

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: How would you feel if someone stole your stuff
or your income or your reputation?

[09:05] Hour Destiny: Willful ignorance is unacceptable.

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Is that legal behavior?

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Right, Hour.

[09:05] Sarvana Haalan: It happens much too often 🙁

[09:06] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): (yes, Nolo’s great)

[09:06] Nany (nany.kayo): There is another side to this issue I hope
to bring up.

[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: You all can help. disingenuous actions are hard
for us to understand.
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: When it comes to Intellectual Property, there
is no gray area. It is black and white.

[09:06] Nany (nany.kayo): dont think so, Zinnia

[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Taking without permission is stealing.
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Arrrg! Do you know pirates?
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: People often tell me that they think because
images, writing, music, or video is on the web or in a virtual world;
it is free for them to take. Absolutely not! It is thievery unless the
creator of the work has given you permission.

[09:07] Nany (nany.kayo): Museums claim property rights to things they
did not create

[09:07] Sarvana Haalan: I prefer “written permission” before using
content both ways.

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, Nany, I think we will have to address that
issue sometime.

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Respect, Professionalism, Integrity, and Understanding
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Requirements to value Intellectual Property Rights.
[09:08] Zinnia Zauber: You can not have truth without an agreement. A
handshake is an accord. Respect is value.
[09:08] Zinnia Zauber: What is intellectual property?
Ideas and creative assets become property once they can be touched,
seen, heard, and felt.

[09:08] Zinnia Zauber: When a light bulb in your head, becomes one in
your hand. So, it has to somehow escape from your brain and become a
tangible medium of expression.

[09:08] Hour Destiny: Technically, ideas cannot be intellectual property. 🙂

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: right Hour

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: Four ways to protect different types of
intellectual property:
Copyrights
Patents
 Trademarks
 Tradesecrets

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: What is a Copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution
and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a
tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and
unpublished works.

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: What is a Patent?
A patent is a grant issued by the United States government giving the
inventor the right to exclude all others from making, using, or
selling their invention. There are three kinds of patents: utility,
design, and plant.

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: What is a trademark?
A trademark is a distinctive word, phrase, symbol, or design which
identifies specific goods or services as those produced or provided by
a certain person or enterprise.

[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: What is a Trade Secret?
A trade secret can be any formula, compilation of information,
pattern, or device which benefits a business and can give an advantage
over their competitors.

[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: How are those slides rezzing for you guys?

[09:10] Ageliki Mekanic: ok

[09:10] Serene Jewell: they look good

[09:10] Hour Destiny: Anonymonity and punishments that seem excessive
seem to be two of the main reasons for piracy. Not to mention
conveinence.

[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: Super, thank you!
[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: I am going to focus on copyrights for this
presentation. I will cover what can have a copyright, how to get a
copyright, length of rights, public domain, fair use, Creative Commons

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: What types of creative work does copyright protect?
Any original “fixed in a tangible medium of expression” which means
that the work must exist in some kind of physical form for at least
some period of time. That includes any recorded media or your
computer’s random access memory (RAM).

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: Some examples include: Artistic – architectural
designs, digital media, graphic designs, paintings, photographs,
sculptures
[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: Literary – educational materials, novels, plays, poetry…
Performances – choreography, music, sheet music, sounds… Recorded
media – games, movies, music, software, videos…

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: Are creative ideas protected?
[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: No.
Once a creative idea becomes tangible, then it can be protected.

[09:11] Hour Destiny: Emails…

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: yes, Hour – emails and they are legal docs…

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: The copyright is a legal device that provides
the creator the rights to control how their protected work is used.
Those rights involve the reproduction right, distribution right,
performance and display rights, and the right to create adaptations
(or derivative works).

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: How do I copyright my work?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and
fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or
with the aid of a machine or device.
[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: You have the © (copyright) once you make the
idea actual. Once it is tangible.

[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: Why would I register my copyright?
To protect your works and if you needed to take legal action.

[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: How do I register copyright of my work?
http://www.copyright.gov/
[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: $35 – Online registration of a basic claim in
an original work of authorship (electronic filing)
Lots more services and forms there…

[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: A valid copyright notice should contain:

the word “copyright”

a “c” in a circle ©

the date of publication

the name of either the author or owner of the copyright rights in the
published work.
[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: Remember, once you create something – it has a copyright.

[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: How long does a copyright last?
For works published after 1977, the copyright lasts for the life of
the author plus 70 years.
Works published after 1922 but before 1978 are protected for 95 years
from the date of publication.
[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: All works published in the United States before
1923 are in the public domain.

[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: What is the public domain?
It refers to creative materials that are not protected by intellectual
property laws such as copyright, trademark, or patent laws.
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: You should presume that every work is protected
by copyright unless you can establish that it is not. Just because you
don’t see a ©, you know it has a copyright if it is created after
1977.

[09:15] Hour Destiny: Don’t forget Fair Use rights.

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: Do your research and remember copyrights can be renewed.
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: I will cover that!
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: This disrespectful statement pisses me off,
have you heard it?
“I rather beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.”
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: That is disingenuous laziness and illegal behavior.
“Cuff him, Dano!”

[09:15] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Can be expensive too

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: yes!

[09:16] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Do you feel like you are restricted by these
copyrights to protect the creators?
[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Maybe you want to make something in a virtual
world, don’t have the ability to make original works of your own. You
have options.
[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: You understand the rights creators have over
their works, so how can you use their work to create your own?

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Respect creators’ rights and discover how you
can create as well.
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Take a class and learn to make it yourself!
It is easier than ever to create unique works yourself!
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: If you know how to use your phone camera, BAM!
You have a means to create amazing textures that you can bring
inworld.
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: No one needs to know that stunning sofa in your
office started out as a close up of your favorite polar fleece. Or,
was it some pound cake?

[09:17] Hour Destiny: As I sit here with an Optimus Prime avatar…

[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: hehe, right…

[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Support creators…
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Buy works that you have the license to use.
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: When you buy a piece of art, like a painting,
you do not have any reproduction rights. That is the right to make
copies of a protected work.
You only have the right to hang it on your wall.
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: The artist owns the reproduction rights while
you own the painting.
Unless it is stated in the sales contract that the purchase includes
the reproduction rights. Don’t assume anything, contact the artist for
answers.
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Always ask!
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Most people don’t understand these rules.
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Some artists don’t know their rights either.
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Licensed works will have terms of service in
writing that explains permitted use of the work and details
stipulations. Creators may want to maintain the integrity of their
works and express restrictions.

[09:19] Sarvana Haalan: It’s hard to get folks to understand the rules. 🙁

[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, but that is why we are discussing it. To help them!
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: A good example of that in virtual worlds are
textures. The creator of a texture might state do not resell or
distribute these as textures. Resell only as part of a build. So you
have bought a license to use the textures, not sell the textures on
their own.
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Read the fine print…
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: ask the creator…
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Creative Commons license, let’s the creator
keep their copyright, but gives a way to let people use, copy, and
distribute works.
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Do you guys know about the Creative Commons?

[09:20] CarmenLittleFawn: no

[09:20] Zotarah Shepherd nods

[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Later, check out…
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: This is a great video explaining what the
Creative Commons offers…
https://creativecommons.org/videos/get-creative

[09:21] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yes

[09:21] CarmenLittleFawn: ty

[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: I am going to try to get a speaker to discuss
that for us someday.
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: CC instead of c
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Different licenses include: Attribution,
Attribution-ShareAlike, Attribution-NoDerivs,
Attribution-NonCommercial, Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, and
Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs.
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Fair Uses – a limitation and exception to the
exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative
work.
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Violations of fair use occurs when the use of
copyrighted work is used for commercial gain.

[09:22] Glitteractica Cookie: I can help you get a speaker to talk to that

[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Glitter

[09:22] Nany (nany.kayo): Good idea

[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: Uses That Are Generally Fair Uses:
Nonprofit educational uses
Research and scholarship
News reporting
Criticism and comment
Parody
Non-commercial use is often fair use.
Benefit to the public may be fair use.
[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: How’s that Hour?

[09:22] Ozma Malibu: We used Creative Commons works for the Helios
science classes, Z. That’s where I found the images for the
instruction for physics etc.

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Super, then we really should line that up!
[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: I see this violation all the time at craft
fairs when vendors are selling items that contain licensed characters
– like Disney characters.
[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: They will by fabric with those characters and
it states clearly in the selvage (the edge of the fabric) “This
product intended for non-commercial home use only.”

[09:23] Hour Destiny: What about books in audio format? What if
someone is blind and needs an audio format?

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: That means that whatever is made out of the
fabric isn’t licensed for resale. So, the maker of the potholder is
violating the rights of the fabric creator if they sell the potholder.

[09:23] Glitteractica Cookie: TechSoup is published under creative commons

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Needless to say, people break the laws. So, I
encourage folks at the craft fairs to educate themselves.

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Good question on the audio… I think more and
more talks are coming up!

[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: here is an oldie but goodie article from
TechSoup 2008 about creative commons: what it is, how to use it:
http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page4817.cfm

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: I get asked this all the time, “If I change
something enough, like with Photoshop, can I use it for myself without
the permission of the creator?” I always picture in my head
Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam “ on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
My answer is, “If you are creative enough, make something new
yourself.”
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, Glitter!

[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: no prob

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Derivative or “derivative work” is defined as
work based on one or more preexisting works that are transformed or
adapted.

[09:24] Hour Destiny: 30% changes.

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Nearly everything is a derivative of something.
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Transformativeness – work must sufficiently
transforms the expression of the original work that the new work is no
longer “substantially similar” and does not infringe the copyright in
the original.
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: So, we know we can make changes…
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: and make it our own
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: but, I like people really making things on their own.
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: I get to teach more classes that way!
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: lol

[09:25] CarmenLittleFawn: love it

[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: Virtual Rights are Real Rights

Content in Second Life is any works of creative authorship that
includes text, scripts, applications, programs, gestures, animations,
video, music, sounds, images, photos, textures, graphic design,
primitives, and objects.

[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: Everything here is ART!
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: right?
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: we are all pieces of work
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: some more than others
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: 😉

[09:26] CarmenLittleFawn: lol

[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: Appreciate your own significance.
If you license your work, you retain legal ownership of the work
(copyright) while someone else can produce, duplicate your imagery on
merchandise, and sell your item.
[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Depending on the written contract, when you
grant the license, you can receive a royalty. That is an ongoing
payment based upon a percentage of the income from the licensed work.
[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you here create in SL?

[09:27] Zotarah Shepherd: I do

[09:27] CarmenLittleFawn: I am going to

[09:27] jacmacaire Humby: not fool 🙂

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Don’t be shy!

[09:27] Brena Benoir: I have before

[09:27] Buffy Beale: I do

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: Super!

[09:28] CarynTopia Silvercloud: I am trying to learn how

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: wonderful!

[09:28] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Raises Hand

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: Great!

[09:28] Serene Jewell: yes

[09:28] Hour Destiny: I wish content owners overall were more open to
alternative expressions.

[09:28] CarmenLittleFawn: I also have a copyright, but have learned a
lot more about it here today from you

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: Then, you know how important it is to protect
your efforts.

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: Second Life / Linden Lab Terms of Service
Content Licenses and Intellectual Property Rights

[09:29] Dancers Yao: yes

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: thank you Carmen!

[09:29] Ozma Malibu: Zinnia you are good at raising awareness and
ENTHUSIASM! I want to go out and take photos right now! I just need to
think of a project to put them in. 🙂

[09:29] Nany (nany.kayo): everybody is welcome to steal anything I create here.

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: You retain any and all Intellectual Property

[09:29] Nany (nany.kayo): It’s true. Ask me and I will give you a copy
of anything I make, full perms

[09:29] Sarvana Haalan: you are saying that we as content creators
need to copyright our creations?

[09:30] Sarvana Haalan: what about photos?

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: the moment you make it, it has a copyright.

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: Linden Lab Official: Snapshot and machinima policy
[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: If you wish to take a snapshot or capture
machinima of content on another Resident’s land, then you need the
Land Owner Consent. Check the Land’s covenant for details.

[09:30] CarmenLittleFawn: oh ok

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: On the Mainland or Linden owned land, you can
take snapshots without permission, but you do need it to capture
machinima.
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Ask permission of each avatar too.

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Snapshot_and_machini…

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: So, that can be overwhelming… I know!
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Ask Permission and give credit!
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: I did a machinima of artists friends in Second
Life and requested permission to film the artist and their works.
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: When I do presentations to promote Second Life,
I ask permission to use photos of them.
[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: I also created my own artwork based on an
avatar with that avatar’s permission.
Thank you to Filthy Fluno!

[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is
a United States copyright law that criminalizes production and

[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: If you discover your work is being distributed

[09:34] Adrianne Lexico: Excellent presentation!!! THANKS, Z!!!

[09:34] Dancers Yao: excellent,,,than you so important

[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: So, I wanted to give us a chance to discuss… as well.

[09:34] bulaklak: Thank you, Zinnia! Great knowledge and advice.

[09:35] Brena Benoir: Woot Zinnia. Thank you for sharing and educating

[09:35] Ageliki Mekanic: Thank you! Great!

[09:35] Serene Jewell: Thanks so much for doing this, Zinnia.

[09:35] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Excellent presentation

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: So, let me ask you some questions…

[09:35] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Thanks Zin!

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Do you think that everything online is free for
you to take and use?

[09:35] CarmenLittleFawn: no

[09:35] Zotarah Shepherd: no

[09:36] Brena Benoir: no

[09:36] trichetriche: nope

[09:36] Jen (jenelle.levenque): NO

[09:36] bertique: i have seen a lot of pictures taken in sl on
flickr… many people protect them buy copyrights… i find it is…
stupid.. beacause sharing is caring

[09:36] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Not everything.

[09:36] Hour Destiny: Unless you get caught… 😀

[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: okay, so I see that some people want to see
more sharing…

[09:36] CarmenLittleFawn: well I like the idea of being creative

[09:36] bertique: i never protect my pics made inworld. i would be
greatful, if somebody finds my pics so good so that he or she will
repost them

[09:37] Nany (nany.kayo): agree

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: That is why the Creative Commons is for you guys!

[09:37] bertique: i am a JOOOMLA fan
[09:37] bertique: i love open source products

[09:37] trichetriche: I love Creative Commons

[09:37] bertique: i really do not understand creative commons

[09:37] Nany (nany.kayo): and if the person using those photos is not
selling them, that is fair use, isnt it?

[09:37] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): ditto.. fan of the CC

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: I think we will really have to do some talks
about that in the future!

[09:37] bertique: because it is some times tricky to understand

[09:38] Buffy Beale: Question: Z how do we license our avatars and can we?

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: yes, there are many choices there.

[09:38] Sarvana Haalan: Back… I crashed

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: You can trademark your avatar

[09:38] CarmenLittleFawn: really
[09:38] CarmenLittleFawn: how?

[09:38] Buffy Beale: wb Sar 🙂

[09:38] Zotarah Shepherd: I am fine with folks using my creations, I
would not however want them stolen from me as their own so I could not
use them.

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: Draxtor did
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: I am in the process of doing it.
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: I am doing an art project about that process.

[09:38] CarmenLittleFawn: did he?

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: yes

[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: cool
[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: I would be interested when u find out

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: He and I are discussing how we can share that
process together.

[09:39] Nany (nany.kayo): Seems petty to fret about someone using some
little bit of junk I make in SL.

[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: great 🙂

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: So, that will be another talk!!!

[09:39] Buffy Beale: that’s great and would be a good session

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: Awesome!

[09:39] Adrianne Lexico: yes, definitely

[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: yes it would be

[09:39] Hour Destiny: A MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online game) that
is free-to-play will still infringe on IP even if it is free.

[09:39] Nany (nany.kayo): LL can easily grab it and wipe it out at any time.

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: True Nany

[09:39] Sarvana Haalan: what is you bought your avatar an dmade major
modifications, can you trademark or copyright it?

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: true
[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Well, can we agree that I will have to prepare
another talk about the avatar issues?

[09:40] CarmenLittleFawn: yes indeed

[09:40] bertique: sure

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: I did a talk about that at FCVW this year.

[09:40] Sarvana Haalan: *what if…

[09:40] Buffy Beale: I’d like to know about trademarking an avatar so sure

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: It is very important stuff.

[09:40] Zotarah Shepherd: If you made the skin and shape then you
should be able to trademark your avatar. I am not quite that creative
yet.

[09:40] Sarvana Haalan: great idea

[09:41] CarmenLittleFawn: yes it is important

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, Buffy is my star when it comes to avatar branding.

[09:41] bertique: hm
[09:41] bertique: may i ask one question?

[09:41] Buffy Beale: that’s easy cause Zinnia made my skin 🙂

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Please

[09:41] bertique: it is very important to me

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[09:41] Sarvana Haalan: coool!!

[09:41] bertique: what does “commercial use” means?
[09:41] Zotarah Shepherd: I’d know Buffy anywhere without seeing her tag

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: That means to earn income from.

[09:41] trichetriche: buying and selling

[09:41] Adrianne Lexico: seems like we have another talk ahead, Zinnia!

[09:41] bertique: if i create a website and use it privatly, it is
not.. ok, but if i place some ads there?

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: hehehee

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: So, like if music is playing in a store…

[09:42] Buffy Beale: 🙂 worn this outfit since I started

[09:42] Adrianne Lexico: you have to tell us more about trademarking avatars! 🙂

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: that is also commercial use

[09:42] Zotarah Shepherd: I know : )

[09:42] bertique: :((

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: and people have to pay to play

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: yes u have Buffy 🙂

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: yes they do Zinnia

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: I am so excited you guys are interested in more!

[09:42] Adrianne Lexico: we always are!

[09:42] Adrianne Lexico: :

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: yay!

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: I am 🙂

[09:42] HB Eternal: and yes, Buffy washes her outfit regularly

[09:42] bertique: it’s a great topic

[09:42] Buffy Beale: not easy running around as a little green fairy I
can tell you that lol

[09:43] Adrianne Lexico: lol

[09:43] CarmenLittleFawn: heheheeh

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: But, I want to be sure we get a chance to
handle our whole agenda

[09:43] Buffy Beale: with all the gorgeous others here
[09:43] Buffy Beale: lol HB, at least weekly

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: so how about you guys share with me more topics
you would like covered.
[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: and we will work on that!
[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for this chance to share with you and
the slides are here
[09:44] Zinnia Zauber:

[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: Who has some?

[09:45] Adrianne Lexico: seems like the law is sometimes different
depending where you live.

[09:45] Glitteractica Cookie: I like Buffy’s idea, esp if those
stories refer to uses of tech by the org. Good for the pruposes of
trichetriche too

[09:45] Adrianne Lexico: thank you, Zinnia!

[09:45] Buffy Beale: Z a tip… use renneemiko[at]gmail[dot]com and

TechSoup’s technology donations and resources. If you have a story to
share or know any other nonprofits who do email:
ImpactMap@techsoupglobal.org, and if you have any questions or want to
learn more email me bea@techsoupglobal.org
[09:49] trichetriche: Please take a moment and explore the map to see
how organizations are showcased

[09:51] Buffy Beale: the Nonprofit Commons space 🙂

[09:52] Glitteractica Cookie: Hey Sarvana, I’m just looking over this
great article, but there are a few corrections we’d like to make, for
ex, you don’t need to be a 501c3 to have a space here. And I’d like to
share a senstence or two about how to get technology products from
techsoup. in http://www.bilou.info/blog/theres-a-whole-other-world-out-there
can you connect community@techsoup.org with the author, and so we can

Paul Preibisch / Fire Centaur of Avatar Classroom with SLOODLE http://avatarclassroom.com

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Now I would like to introduce our main speaker.
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Fire, can you please join me up here?

[08:57] Fire Centaur: sure
[08:57] Fire Centaur: Im coming

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: This is Paul Preibisch / Fire Centaur of Avatar Classroom .

[08:58] bulaklak: Welcome, Fire!

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Quick bio of Fire

[08:58] Buffy Beale: yay Fire!

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Paul Preibisch graduated from Simon Fraser University in Computing Science. He spent 5 years teaching English in South Korea, and is now living in Tokyo Japan, where he works as a full time web-developer and programmer for an e-learning software company.

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Paul has had an island in Second Life since 2006, and was a lead developer of the SLOODLE project in 2009-2010. [08:58] JerryBuchko: Tokyo, awesome! 🙂

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Paul is currently working with Edmund Edgar on the Avatar Classroom (http://avatarclassroom.com), a turn key Moodle / Sloodle solution to connect 3d classrooms with quizzes, assignments, and role play activities.

[08:58] Tuty Inkpen: Welcome Fire!

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Fire for joining us today

[09:00] Rhiannon Chatnoir: can grab a seat up on the green chairs

[09:00] Fire Centaur: waiting for avatars to rez in so I dont sit on your lap!

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, please sit in the front

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Lots of people are interested in what you do

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: the stools in the front

[09:00] JerryBuchko: 🙂

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Yay!

[09:01] Fire Centaur: ok i think im not sitting on anyones lap

[09:01] Fire Centaur: ok great!
[09:01] Fire Centaur: Hi everyon!!!
[09:01] Fire Centaur: nice to see you!~

[09:01] Buffy Beale: nice to see you too Fire

[09:01] Fire Centaur: thanks for inviting me back to speak with you all
[09:01] Fire Centaur: its 12:30am here in Tokyo!
[09:01] Fire Centaur: getting hot in this part of the world already

[09:02] Rhiannon Chatnoir waves hello to Japan

[09:02] Fire Centaur: for those of you whom I havent met yet,
[09:02] Fire Centaur: my name is Paul preibisch

[09:02] Tuty Inkpen: Since you’re Fire sounds like you can take the heat. lol

[09:02] Fire Centaur: haha

[09:02] talkwithmarie: hehe

[09:02] Tuty Inkpen: I’m in Atlanta … called HOTlanta

[09:02] Fire Centaur: right Donna, I chose this name specifically because the heat usually gets to me!
[09:02] Fire Centaur: I am an elearning developer from Vancouver Canada, currently living in Tokyo Japan. I am a graduate in Computer Science, from Simon Fraser University, and have been working with Moodle for about 7 years now.

[09:03] Buffy Beale: ohh yay a Canadian 🙂

[09:03] Fire Centaur: Im really glad to be here at NPC with you – thanks to Rik for inviting me
[09:03] Fire Centaur: Ys, I miss Vancouver a lot! I will be back there in August though to escape the Tokyo heat!
[09:04] Fire Centaur: Today, I want to talk with you about a project Ive been workign on for over a year now in Tokyo

[09:04] Glitteractica Cookie: great

[09:04] Fire Centaur: with another SL user named Edmund Edgar
[09:04] Fire Centaur: Edmund Earp in Second Life

[09:04] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Fire is the person to ask all of your Moodle/Sloodle questions to after he finishes chatting

[09:04] Fire Centaur: both of us are origional developers in the SLOODLE project
[09:05] Fire Centaur: How many of you here are familiar with MOODLE?

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: me

[09:05] Rhiannon Chatnoir raises hand

[09:05] Lotta Flux raises hand

[09:05] JerryBuchko: yes vaguely

[09:05] JerryBuchko: understand that it’s an LMS

[09:05] Ozma Malibu: yes

[09:05] Fire Centaur: ok this is great

[09:05] Buffy Beale: I am

[09:06] Fire Centaur: looks like we have a few people

[09:06] Jenelle Levenque: I have no clue

[09:06] Fire Centaur: well… very quickly,

[09:06] Glitteractica Cookie: i know moodle

[09:06] Fire Centaur: MOODLE is a software you can install on your webserver,
[09:06] Fire Centaur: that once installed, is a teacher / student website
[09:06] Fire Centaur: (Learning Management System)
[09:06] Fire Centaur: where teachers can assign logins for their students
[09:07] Fire Centaur: or students can sign into
[09:07] Fire Centaur: and then particpate in online activituies
[09:07] Fire Centaur: like chat rooms
[09:07] Fire Centaur: group forums
[09:07] Fire Centaur: quizes
[09:07] Fire Centaur: assignements
[09:07] Fire Centaur: submit online papers
[09:07] Fire Centaur: etc
[09:07] Fire Centaur: since it is an LMS
[09:07] Fire Centaur: every activity is linked to the grade book

[09:07] Tuty Inkpen: so similar to ning but it’s on your own server
[09:07] Fire Centaur: so a teacher can assign grades etc

[09:07] Fire Centaur: yes

[09:08] Jenelle Levenque: We had something like that at college

[09:08] Tuty Inkpen: (I am a homeschool educator, so this could be useful for us. Definitely want to know more.)

[09:09] Ozma Malibu: The gradebook part is important for the teacher to organize the classroom.

[09:09] Fire Centaur: MOODLE is opensource

[09:09] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yay!

[09:09] Tuty Inkpen: sweet!

[09:10] Fire Centaur: meaning it is completely free
[09:10] Fire Centaur: and many programmers can commit new features to it
[09:10] Fire Centaur: so the whole community beneift
[09:10] Fire Centaur: its licensed under GPL3

[09:10] Ethelred Weatherwax: I disagree. I dislike “open source” because it means you need a certain level of technical skill. And usually your own server

[09:10] Fire Centaur: as is SLOODLE
[09:11] Fire Centaur: MOODLE has a core philosophy

[09:11] Creech Antwerp: I am a fan of open source

[09:11] Fire Centaur: which you can read about here; http://docs.moodle.org/en/Pedagogy

[09:11] In Kenzo: Many open source technologies do not require your own server and can be very easy to use.

[09:11] Fire Centaur: briefly, it is:
[09:12] Fire Centaur: All of us are potential teachers as well as learners – in a true collaborative environment
we are both.

[09:12] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Ethelred, there are some hosting companies, like DreamHost, that have one click installs of common open source software, such as Moodle, to make it easy to set up a base install

[09:12] Fire Centaur: 2) We learn particularly well from the act of creating or expressing something for others to
See.
[09:12] Fire Centaur: 3) We learn a lot by just observing the activity of our peers.

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: Fire, if you turn on your Nonprofit Commons Group Tag, then you can Rez your slideshow.

[09:12] Fire Centaur: thanks zinnia

[09:12] Creech Antwerp: Eth – you can also fairly easily get volunteers who can help you with setup.

[09:12] Tuty Inkpen: I use hostgator and think they may have moodle on quick install … will look into it

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: You are welcome, we want to see your goods!

[09:13] Ozma Malibu: Educators like Moodle because it’s less commercial, Ethelred, not just to make money but designed for good pedagogy, and more fun to use than other LMSs.

[09:14] Fire Centaur: im sorry, I think I must relog –

[09:14] Tuty Inkpen: Yes, as a home educator, non-commercial online resources are important … so many ads on most of the free sites and they are just awful and crash my older pc’s that the kids use

[09:14] Lotta Flux: wb Fire

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: Did you guys get to check out Fire’s website?
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: http://avatarclassroom.com

[09:15] Lotta Flux will after the presentation

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: It looks really cool! We get a lot of questions about SLOODLE.

[09:15] Chayenn: PY1 emailed twice avatarclassroom since they made their last presentation but no answer

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: So, I know he will be back soon to share with us.

[09:16] bulaklak: It must be such an exciting time to grow up.

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: oh, Chayenn, you can remind him.

[09:16] Chayenn: i will

[09:16] Buffy Beale: yay here’s Fire 🙂

[09:16] Lotta Flux: yay! he’s back!

[09:16] Fire Centaur: Hi again!

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Welcome Back Fire

[09:16] Lotta Flux: lol Buffy 🙂

[09:16] bulaklak: Welcome back, Fire.

[09:16] Fire Centaur: im real sorry everyone – its funny, sl never troubles me EXCEPT when I have a presentation
[09:16] Fire Centaur: im on a different machine now

[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Super

[09:18] Chayenn: PY1 was emailing you a few times after your last presentation in NPC concerning your chairs recording surveys
[09:18] Chayenn: but we never got any answer from you

[09:18] Fire Centaur: ok… as I was saying

[09:18] Fire Centaur: the MOODLE philosphy, there are two more points
[09:18] Fire Centaur: 4) A learning environment needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly
respond to the needs of the participants within it.

[09:18] Chayenn: We have a sim for HIV education on Jokaydiagrid and we were looking to get your advice to record our surveys

[09:19] Fire Centaur: oh great Chaen
[09:19] Fire Centaur: pls contact me about this – perhaps I can help
[09:19] Fire Centaur: so In sumary,
[09:19] Fire Centaur: All of us are potential teachers as well as learners – in a true collaborative environment
we are both.

We learn particularly well from the act of creating or expressing something for others to
See.

We learn a lot by just observing the activity of our peers.

By understanding the contexts of others, we can teach in a more transformational way
(constructivism)

A learning environment needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly
respond to the needs of the participants within it.
[09:20] Fire Centaur: so.. SLOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: is…
[09:20] Fire Centaur: The LINK
[09:20] Fire Centaur: between second life and MOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: you probably guess that
[09:20] Fire Centaur: !
[09:20] Fire Centaur: once you have MOODLE installed on yoru server
[09:20] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE is a TOOLBOX of 3d elements that connect to your MOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: it is the 3D extention to your LMS
[09:20] Fire Centaur: so you can do activities in SL

[09:21] Lotta Flux: How cool is that??

[09:21] Fire Centaur: and have them communicate with your LMS

[09:21] Lotta Flux: smiles

[09:21] Tuty Inkpen: Pretty cool

[09:21] Fire Centaur: …

[09:21] Creech Antwerp: Ok, that is really neat

[09:21] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE was started in 2007
[09:21] Fire Centaur: and was origionally pitched to the SLED mailing list
[09:21] Fire Centaur: by jeremy Kemp
[09:22] Fire Centaur: Jeremy Kabumpo from SJSU

[09:22] Creech Antwerp: Does it go in both directions?

[09:22] Fire Centaur: and also by Daniel Livingstone / Buddy Sprocket (UWS) posted the idea on Second Life
Educators mailing list
[09:22] Fire Centaur: yes it does
[09:22] Fire Centaur: creech

[09:22] Creech Antwerp: and are you using the SL API for it?

[09:22] Fire Centaur: basically, using SLOODLE

[09:22] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yay Jeremey & Daniel.. both great guys & educators

[09:22] Fire Centaur: you have a Database attached to SL, with an API
[09:22] Fire Centaur: in 2008,
[09:22] Fire Centaur: the great folks at Eduserve gave us a grant
[09:23] Fire Centaur: for funded development of the idea

[09:23] Glitteractica Cookie: Let’s hold on questions until he end, so we have time to get the key information for the group before Fire’s time runs out
[09:23] Fire Centaur: before that, good ppl were volunteering their time, like Peter Bloomfield and edmund earp

[09:23] Fire Centaur: I was hired as a full time developer in 2009
[09:23] Fire Centaur: then in 2010, i worked independently on the project while in vancouver
[09:24] Fire Centaur: and did projects with educators like Chris Surridge (Devils Island Mystery)
[09:24] Fire Centaur: and other ppl in SL
[09:24] Fire Centaur: in 2010, till present I teamed up with Edmund earp
[09:24] Fire Centaur: to continue devel
[09:24] Fire Centaur: what we found however
[09:24] Fire Centaur: was

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Fire, how can people get going on the Avatar Classroom?

[09:24] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE was REALLLY hard to install
[09:24] Fire Centaur: ok sorry for histry lesson!

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: hehe
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: We are just so excited!

[09:24] Fire Centaur: ill hurry it up
[09:25] Fire Centaur: ok so to install sloodle
[09:25] Fire Centaur: you needed abunch of skills
[09:25] Fire Centaur: install on your web server
[09:25] Fire Centaur: configuration of tools etc
[09:25] Fire Centaur: it just took too long to set up
[09:25] Fire Centaur: so…
[09:25] Fire Centaur: thats where the avatar classroom came in
