Universal Design for Learning Spaces in VW with Blu Heron / Wanda Hardy of ISTE for July 20 Nonprofit Commons Weekly Meeting

Nonprofit Commons Weekly Meeting
July 20, 2012, 8:30 AM SLT / PST
Plush Nonprofit Commons Amphitheater
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Plush%20Nonprofit%20Commons/88/126/26

This Friday, July 20, Blu Heron / Wanda Hardy will join us at the Nonprofit Commons to talk about Universal Design in Learning (UDL) and share the key points of a professional learning “package” that bundles Virtual World (VW) accessibility issues, resources, and workshop-style activities for engaging educators in collaborative solutions inworld. It is impossible to create a virtual classroom that is usable by everyone, in all situations. It is possible to use an UDL process that results in products, environments, and experiences that are usable for the largest group of people in a VW and effects differentiated teaching and differentiated learning.

About Blu:

Blu Heron / Wanda Hardy earned her Masters of Education, Educational Technology, Sacramento State University, CA. Her involvement in education spans many years and includes: 16 years teaching high school sciences; 17 years as a community educator, web site developer, and software tester for an electrical utility; and volunteer mentor in Second Life (SL) for the International Society for Technology (ISTE). Currently is teaching building classes for the Builders Brewery in SL.

Mentors Central

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: Today, I am wearing one of my frocks I donated
for fundraising for Relay for Life in 2009 as a reminder for you to
support them in 2012 this weekend!
[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: Relay for Life’s big annual Second Life event
is Saturday, July 14 through Sunday, July 15, 2012. For more details
please visit – http://rflofsl.intuitwebsites.com
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: Now it is time for Mentors Central!
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: Gentle please take it away!

[08:50] Adalace Jewell: sorry, I’m late, Adalace Jewell, RoSa library
Brussels Belgium – @adalace

[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: no worries, keep up the intros as we go.
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: Gentle you want to come up front please
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: thank you!

[08:51] Gentle Heron: Sure

[08:52] Gentle Heron: Today I want to speak briefly about a simple
tool that is available I believe from NPC
[08:52] Gentle Heron: Good morning. This mini lesson will teach you
how to use a simple tool called a “Changing Picture Display.” It’s a
display, in a frame, that…. changes pictures….. randomly.

[08:52] Adalace Jewell: 🙂

[08:52] Gentle Heron: hence the name!
[08:52] Gentle Heron: It shouldn’t matter which viewer you are using.
[08:53] Gentle Heron: First, everyone needs to click on this package.
You will get a folder that contains:
[08:53] Gentle Heron: an empty Changing Picture Display
a SL Snapshot
several SL textures

[08:53] Buffy Beale: nice packaging Gentle

[08:53] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you Gentle

[08:53] Gentle Heron: yeah kind of noticeable
[08:53] Gentle Heron: The snapshot and textures are samples, but you
can use your own if you prefer.
[08:54] Gentle Heron: If you spread out a little, you can rez your
copy of the tool right in front of you. Par has enabled rezzing, so
please rez out your Picture Changer now.

[08:54] Coughran Mayo: Has anyone ever noticed how organized Gentle always is?

[08:54] Gentle Heron: Thanks C!
[08:54] Gentle Heron used to be a teacher…. maybe still is.
[08:55] Gentle Heron: OK!
[08:55] Gentle Heron: I see a few folks have rezzed their picture changer.
[08:55] Gentle Heron: Keep an eye on your own, please.
[08:56] Gentle Heron: I’m going to give directions on how to use it.
[08:56] Gentle Heron: Let’s wait a few more seconds for more of us to
rez the Picture Changer.

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Go ahead and rez your changers please.

[08:57] Gentle Heron: Caryn, I checked, and it’s certainly OK to do
this while wearing the item.
[08:57] Gentle Heron: I do that sometimes when I’m in a NO REZ area.

[08:57] CarynTopia Silvercloud: sorry I don’t know what I am doing

[08:57] Gentle Heron: You’re fine

[08:57] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Gentle, I’m clicking but not
recieving anything… ;(

[08:57] Gentle Heron: If you want, you can click on it and DETACH it,
Caryn. Then find it in your inventory and drag it onto the ground.
[08:58] Gentle Heron: Jerry, what are you clicking on? The pink box?

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: It is called Simple Changing Picture Display
and find it under your Recent tab.
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: This is a great lesson for all of us!

[08:59] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Oops, sorry I had tried clicking
on someone’s rezzed frame… my bad

[08:59] Zotarah Shepherd: I got one of these from Lyr Lobo years ago
and used it different places even on the teen grid for a display. It
is a prim saving way to show many pictures, al though hers goes in a
certain order I can change in the script.

[08:59] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): very cool script… so simple!

[08:59] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Got it, thanks Gentle

[08:59] Gentle Heron: OK
[08:59] Gentle Heron: Now let’s begin learning how to use it. Do NOT
panic! It is easy.
[08:59] Gentle Heron: **To use the tool:
1. Rez the “Simple Changing Picture Display” and EDIT it.
2. In the CONTENT tab of the EDIT menu, notice there is a
“Cycle_Texture” script. Leave this alone!
[09:00] Gentle Heron wants to see lots of folks with dots shooting out
of their arms in EDIT mode.

[09:00] Coughran Mayo: I see dot people!

[09:00] CarmenLittleFawn: hahaha

[09:01] Gentle Heron: OK is anyone having trouble EDITing their tool,
or finding the CONTENT tab?

[09:01] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Nope, I’m with ya 😉

[09:01] Gentle Heron: Ready for the next step?

[09:01] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:01] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yep

[09:01] Gentle Heron: 3. Drag textures or snapshots into the CONTENTS
folder of the EDIT menu.
You may want to add two items (a snapshot and a texture) at this time,
just to test out the tool.

[09:02] Dancers Yao: yes

[09:02] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): slide 0
[09:02] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): next

[09:02] Gentle Heron: You can add snapshots or textures or both. It
doesn’t matter.

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: love it… works great

[09:02] Gentle Heron: And since this is a sample, just put in
anything. I gave you a couple to try.
[09:02] Gentle Heron: 4. Close the EDIT menu, and the pictures will
begin to cycle through.
NOTE: The pictures will cycle randomly.

[09:02] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): <– rezzed the poster from my
class covering these skills….

[09:03] Gentle Heron: Thanks Any1

[09:03] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Wow, that’s sweet!

[09:03] Gentle Heron: You should be seeing the images you put into the tool.
[09:03] Gentle Heron: They cycle randomly

[09:03] Coughran Mayo: I changed my timer setting to 1, it’s psychedelic!

[09:03] Gentle Heron: 5. Rename the tool (“My Friends” or “Art Photos
Collection” or whatever) before you TAKE it into your inventory.

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Look at you guys!!!

[09:03] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you I needed one of these gentle since
I no longer have one 🙂

[09:03] Gentle Heron: #5 is such an important step

[09:03] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): back

[09:04] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): Rename on the General Tab.. this poster

[09:04] Gentle Heron: If you don’t rename it, you’ll likely lose it in
your inventory
[09:04] Gentle Heron: So go back to the GENERAL tab in EDIT mode
(thanks Any1) and change the name
[09:04] Gentle Heron: Everybody got it so far?

[09:05] CarmenLittleFawn: yeap

[09:05] Gentle Heron: This is a simple but effective tool. It has many
uses. In your home, or in your office.

[09:05] Coughran Mayo: In the bathroom!

[09:05] Gentle Heron: yes C in case you get bored

[09:05] CarmenLittleFawn: giggles

[09:05] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): If you right click TAKE.. it
should go back to the same folder you rezzed the original from…
otherwise with Take Copy it goes into Objects folder

[09:05] CarmenLittleFawn: hahahah

[09:05] Gentle Heron: Very good point, Any1. Thanks.
[09:06] Gentle Heron: While we wait for our guest to be able to log
in, let me show you one more little skill.
[09:06] Gentle Heron: We can use the same Changing Picture Display.

[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Wonderful!

[09:06] Gentle Heron: If you put yours into your inventory, please
take it back out.

[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, our guest Jim is having issues logging in.

[09:06] Gentle Heron: I would like to show you how to change the
appearance of its frame.
[09:07] Gentle Heron: This way you can make the frame match your decor!
[09:07] Gentle Heron: Are we ready to try that?

[09:07] Tom Bukowski: Very important, trust me lol

[09:07] Gentle Heron: Thanks Tom.

[09:07] CarmenLittleFawn: mmhmm

[09:07] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Yes

[09:07] Coughran Mayo: This is like having a really smart Martha Stewart at NPC

[09:07] Gentle Heron: So please once again set out your own Picture Display

[09:07] Tom Bukowski: ROFL

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[09:07] CarmenLittleFawn: giggles

[09:07] Tom Bukowski: if your frame texture clashes with the curtains,
*no one* will come to your parties

[09:07] Gentle Heron: **To change the appearance of the frame:
1. Rez the “Simple Changing Picture Display” and EDIT it.
[09:08] Gentle Heron: OK now you guys……
[09:08] Gentle Heron: 2. Click the radio button “Edit Linked” (bottom
of left list of buttons, above the GENERAL tab).
[09:08] Gentle Heron: (Does everyone see the EDIT LINKED little button?)

[09:08] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:08] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): found it

[09:08] Gentle Heron: Does anyone NOT find that button?

[09:08] Zinnia Zauber: yup

[09:09] Gentle Heron: You may never have used it before.
[09:09] Gentle Heron: 3. Click on the frame, NOT the central picture
portion. This selects just the frame, not the whole tool.

[09:09] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): next

[09:09] Gentle Heron: That is important
[09:09] Gentle Heron: You want only to edit the FRAME, not the whole thing
[09:09] Gentle Heron: 4. Click on the TEXTURE tab in the EDIT menu.

[09:09] CarmenLittleFawn: yes it is

[09:10] Gentle Heron: 5. Click on the TEXTURE thumbnail, then use the
TEXTURE PICKER to choose what you’d like the frame to look like
(perhaps a wood texture?)
[09:10] Gentle Heron: (That is why I gave you some nice wood textures to try.)
[09:10] Gentle Heron: 6. When you’ve selected the texture you want for
the frame, press OK on the Texture Picker.

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: I made mine to match my dress!

[09:11] Zotarah Shepherd: There are also wood textures in the Library
of most viewers.

[09:11] Gentle Heron: 7. Rename the tool, if desired, before you TAKE
it into your inventory.
[09:11] Gentle Heron: Good job Zinnia.

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[09:11] Gentle Heron: I like fabric textures too.

[09:11] Coughran Mayo: why do I have 32,000 textures in my inventory?

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: hehe

[09:12] Tom Bukowski: Another trick-if you open your inventory folder
separately and go to your textures, you can drag them onto an
individual face of a prim, like the frame

[09:12] Gentle Heron: Because some images are saved as textures, Coughran

[09:12] CarmenLittleFawn: (Rolling on Floor Laughing) u love textures

[09:12] Par (parhelion.palou): There’s a lot of texture to you?

[09:12] Tom Bukowski: so if you do it within the edit window, it
changes all the sides

[09:12] Namaara MacMoragh: good point Coughran… how many textures
can the display hold Gentle?

[09:12] Gentle Heron: And that’s it, really.
You can delete the sample pictures and add in the ones you really want later.

[09:12] Tom Bukowski: but you can do faces differently if you want,
like I’ve done on mine right now

[09:12] Gentle Heron: Namaara, I don’t know. I’ve put 20 into this
viewer and it worked fine

[09:12] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): It will change all sides
UNLESS you click the Select Texture Radio button… see on top left of
edit window

[09:12] Namaara MacMoragh: great thanks 🙂

[09:13] Gentle Heron: Correct Tom and Any1

[09:13] Tom Bukowski: oh right Thank you

[09:13] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Learned something new about
buiding today. That Edit linked function is really handy! 😀

[09:13] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): Easy way is to drag the
texture from inventory to the prim face you want

[09:13] Gentle Heron: Edit Linked is great for texturing just ONE SIDE
of something
[09:13] Gentle Heron: but
[09:13] Gentle Heron: it also allows you to separate and move apart
the prims of a complex object
[09:13] Gentle Heron: so beware
[09:13] Gentle Heron: you may destroy your item

[09:13] Tom Bukowski: lol

[09:13] Gentle Heron: but then, you can just throw it away, and start over!

[09:13] CarmenLittleFawn: yes
[09:13] CarmenLittleFawn: hehehe

[09:14] Tom Bukowski: Building Disaster Stories 101…

[09:14] Gentle Heron: Another good reason for renaming things….. you
keep the original in case you screw up your modifications

[09:14] Jen (jenelle.levenque): If you move something incorrectly, you
can do CONTROL-Z and it should put it back providing you did nothing
else

[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: good to name things so you can find them in
your inventory too.

[09:14] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): good rule of thumb 🙂

[09:14] Gentle Heron: Oh yes Tom, I have many many, including the time
I tried to mod a dress and ended up with the skirt upside down
[09:14] Gentle Heron: Very good advice, Jen.

[09:14] CarmenLittleFawn: giggles

[09:14] Tom Bukowski: lol

[09:15] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): 🙂

[09:15] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): Do right click Take Copy to
save your work as you go along

[09:15] Tom Bukowski: Yeah, control-z is amazing sometimes

[09:15] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): goes to objects folder

[09:15] Gentle Heron: Smart idea, Any1
[09:15] Gentle Heron: Now here is what I am seeing.
[09:15] Gentle Heron: Quite a few people here have been offering great
suggestions.
[09:15] Gentle Heron: I know Zinnia is always looking for people to do
little lessons for Mentor Corner.

[09:15] Tom Bukowski: Accidentally type in 1000 rather than 100 for z
position, thing is up in the ether, ctl-z right away brings it back
lol

[09:15] Zotarah Shepherd: Organize stuff into your inventory as you
get things, just to avoid total chaos. : /

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: I love the ideas on how we could use these
viewers in our offices.

[09:16] Gentle Heron: Maybe those of you with these lovely ideas could
make them into short lessons to share with the rest of us?

[09:16] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): lol @ Tom’s comment!

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Yes!

[09:16] Gentle Heron: I am sure we could all use reminders on how to
UNDO, how to texture just one side, etc etc etc
[09:16] Gentle Heron: There are quite a few nifty tools in the NPC
Toolbox…. we could also use mini lessons on how to use each one.
[09:17] Gentle Heron: And Coughran… you could tell us how you modded
that script to be so psychodelic.

[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Do tell!

[09:17] Gentle Heron: That’s my public service announcement.

[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Gentle! This is wonderful!

[09:17] Gentle Heron: We all know how to do some things…. SHARE THAT
KNOWLEDGE!

[09:17] Buffy Beale: Yay Gentle, great session thanks!

[09:17] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Great lesson, thank you!

[09:17] CarmenLittleFawn: yes, Thank you again Gentle

[09:17] Tom Bukowski: Thank you for doing this gentle, I relearned
some things I’d forgotten

[09:18] Namaara MacMoragh: Yay! Gentle… thank you… this is great!

[09:18] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): great teaching! ty Gentle! SNAPS!

[09:18] Zotarah Shepherd: Thank you Gentle

[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Rah! Gentle!

[09:18] alebez: That was great, Gentle.

[09:18] Gentle Heron: and if you’re concerned about writing it up as a
lesson, I’m willing to help with that also

[09:18] Dancers Yao: thanks…Gentle…wonderful tool

[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you guys enjoyed learning by doing today?

[09:18] Tom Bukowski raises hand

[09:19] Gentle Heron votes for learning by doing.

[09:19] CarmenLittleFawn: raise her hand

[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: excellent!

[09:19] Coughran Mayo: yes!

[09:19] Gentle Heron: Hint: someone could teach how to “emote”

[09:19] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): definitely

[09:19] CarmenLittleFawn: hehehe
[09:19] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: ah, good one.

[09:19] Tom Bukowski notes if you first type /me

[09:19] Namaara MacMoragh: always love learning by doing

[09:19] CarmenLittleFawn: emote what?

[09:19] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) raise hand

[09:19] Namaara MacMoragh: remember things better that way 🙂

[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Well, it appears that our guest JD Jayaram /
Jim Gatto can’t get into SL.

[09:20] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) raises hand

[09:20] Tom Bukowski: then it says is in 3rd person

[09:20] Tom Bukowski: *it

[09:20] CarmenLittleFawn: you do not have to type me any longer

[09:20] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) raises his hand.

[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: So, we have to bring him in another time.
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: So, how about that lesson

[09:20] CarmenLittleFawn: alright sorry he could not make it

[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: the third person…
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, we will get him to come again. Just such a
bummer today.

[09:20] Tom Bukowski: lol on some viewers there are other ways to do
it too, I forget…

[09:21] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) learned a couple of new things today… 😉

[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: I keep emailing him.

[09:21] Jen (jenelle.levenque): You can set Firestorm so you only have
to type a colon instead of /me

[09:21] Gentle Heron: He was on initially but crashed out.

[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: So, let’s keep the ball rolling with some more info.
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: right, he did get here for a second.

[09:22] Tom Bukowski remembers that!

[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: How do we emote in the third person?

[09:22] Gentle Heron: What is emoting anyway?

[09:22] Jen (jenelle.levenque) yawning

[09:22] Zotarah Shepherd smiles

[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: How does it create more engagement?

[09:22] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Note there is no colon after the name

[09:22] Buffy Beale grins

[09:22] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): /smile

[09:22] Tom Bukowski: : smirks

[09:22] Coughran Mayo: I HATE THIS!!

[09:22] Par (parhelion.palou) collapses in a heap, oozing blood from his wound

[09:22] Gentle Heron: Several people show that they know how to do it.

[09:22] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) smiles.

[09:22] Coughran Mayo: was just emoting

[09:22] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Also it can be set to show in italics

[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: Coughran!

[09:22] Tom Bukowski laughs

[09:22] Namaara MacMoragh smiles

[09:22] Gentle Heron: Right Coughran, there are different definitions.

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: so how do you do it?

[09:23] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): ;what

[09:23] Namaara MacMoragh: hehe… I always wanted to know how to do that

[09:23] Buffy Beale: just add /me then type

[09:23] Jen (jenelle.levenque) looks around to see who might need help

[09:23] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): :what

[09:23] CarmenLittleFawn: giggles

[09:23] Tom Bukowski: And you can use avatar animations, gestures, etc
to do it, but in sl at least the norm is still to do it in text

[09:23] Buffy Beale: “/me grins”

[09:23] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) grins

[09:23] Buffy Beale: lol

[09:23] Coughran Mayo: 🙂

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber gasps

[09:23] Gentle Heron: In SL, when we just type in the Chat Box it
comes out looking like the script for a play. The speaker is
identified, and then the exact words that the speaker says.

[09:23] Buffy Beale: lol Z

[09:23] Tom Bukowski: you can even set it so your avie has an
animation for an emote, I think I have one for wow
[09:23] Tom Bukowski: yep lol
[09:23] Tom Bukowski: wow
[09:24] Tom Bukowski: If you watch me avie you’ll see him do this
silly thing if I ever type wow

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Do you think that using emotions or verbs helps
in explaining yourself in a virtual world?

[09:24] Coughran Mayo: HELL NO!

[09:24] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid) okay

[09:24] Gentle Heron prefers emotes to emoticons, which she can not decode.

[09:24] Tom Bukowski: It’s one advantage of vws over email, blog
comments, etc, but it’s not used in all contexts by any means

[09:24] Par (parhelion.palou) thinks typing in all caps is very effective

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber laughs

[09:25] Tom Bukowski: just depends on the social norm, the topic lol
[09:25] Tom Bukowski: RIGHT!

[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: All CAPS is yelling, right?

[09:25] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:25] Jen (jenelle.levenque): That’s been the tradition

[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: I believe in speaking softly and carrying a
big, bright stick.

[09:25] CarmenLittleFawn: me too

[09:25] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): be the stick…

[09:25] Tom Bukowski smiles

[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: So, does the emote get your attention too?

[09:26] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): 😉

[09:26] CarmenLittleFawn: hahaha

[09:26] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid) I sometimes selectively use
caps for EMPHASIS

[09:26] CarmenLittleFawn: when needed

[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: good point Magic

[09:26] Gentle Heron: Sometimes *this* can be used for emphasis also.

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: And, Gentle has shared with us how using
symbols is overwhelming for text to speech readers.
[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: so, a little bit can go a long way.

[09:27] CarmenLittleFawn: 🙂 yes

[09:27] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): would be nice if gestures were
somehow easier to set up & use

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: yes

[09:27] Gentle Heron: That would be a nice lesson too, Jerry.

[09:27] Namaara MacMoragh: agreed Jerry

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: We will add that one to the list.

[09:28] Namaara MacMoragh: I often get tripped up in the middle of
presentations with getstures

[09:28] Zotarah Shepherd: I just program my shortcut keys to do
gestures I use most

[09:28] Gentle Heron: your own, or other people’s, Namaara?

[09:28] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): i’m eagerly awaiting the arrival
of BCIs to help make that a bit more natural…
[09:28] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): 😉

[09:28] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): BCI is?

[09:28] Zotarah Shepherd: BCIs?

[09:28] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Brain Computer Interface
[09:29] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): a mouse for your brain

[09:29] Zotarah Shepherd: hahaha

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: have you seen those Jerry?

[09:29] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yes

[09:29] CarmenLittleFawn: sounds interesting

[09:29] Namaara MacMoragh: My own gestures Gentle

[09:29] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): not quite consumer level level yet i think

[09:29] Par (parhelion.palou): It’s putting the USB socket into your
skull that hurts

[09:29] Namaara MacMoragh: sorry I was sipping coffee….

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: I should hunt down that guy in Washington that
makes them.

[09:29] Zotarah Shepherd: I am not sure I would want that, but I can
see how it would be useful

[09:29] Gentle Heron: Those will not be as useful for people with
disabilities, I fear, as they will be for those with “normal” brains.
I doubt I could use one, given my MS damage.

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: They are very fashion forward.

[09:29] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): one example:
http://www.gizmag.com/ibrain-stephen-hawking-communicate-brainwaves/23182/

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: It isn’t wonderful how we are on the bleeding
edge of tech here?

[09:30] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): another:
http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2012/03/control-world-of-warcraft-with-your-min…

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: That we engage in such wonderful tools.

[09:30] CarmenLittleFawn: yes it is 🙂

[09:30] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): and one more out there called Emotiv

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: And, we get to be the advocates for such tools?

[09:31] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): (i think that’s the spelling)

[09:31] Gentle Heron nods to Jerry

[09:31] Namaara MacMoragh: I think we should talk about these tools
and disabilities sometime.

[09:31] Tom Bukowski just cut his finger on the tech (his avie finger that is)

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, Namaara!

[09:31] Gentle Heron: owie Tom

[09:31] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:31] Gentle Heron: That’s the bleeding edge for sure

[09:31] Namaara MacMoragh: Especially since Gentle brings up a good
point about brain injury and computer use.

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: very much so

[09:31] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): oh, here’s a short TED piece on the Emotiv

[09:31] CarmenLittleFawn: nods

[09:31] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko):
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/tan_le_a_headset_that_reads_your_brainw…

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Jerry, you are the copy and paste master!!!
[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: I love it!
[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for doing that!

[09:32] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Thanks, I curate some of this
stuff that I’m interested in

[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: me/ gets to excited over links
[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: lol

[09:32] CarmenLittleFawn: giggles

[09:33] Zinnia Zauber: This has ended up being a great discussion
beyond our lesson today.

[09:33] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Gentle, I’d love to see these
whether these systems could be trained to work with people who’ve
suffered some form of brain injury.

[09:33] Zinnia Zauber: Namaara, what are people using with BEST?

[09:34] Gentle Heron was distracting Namaara with chatter. Sorry!

[09:35] Dancers Yao: there is some research listed for brain injury on
www.kurzweilAL.com for people with brain injury and computer
communication…including what used to be thought of as vegitative
states.

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Glitter suggested that we have some field trips
in the future for our meetings. Maybe we can visit some places that
cover these ideas and tools as well.

[09:35] Gentle Heron: Yup. Assistive tech is marvelous for
facilitating communication.

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: How do you guys feel about field trips?

[09:35] Namaara MacMoragh: at BEST we’re using a variety of tools that
are low cost and easy to use

[09:36] Gentle Heron: feets on is as fun as hands on, and quite as
useful for learning (my thoughts on field trips)

[09:36] Buffy Beale: I like having field trips to interesting places

[09:36] Namaara MacMoragh: traditional software like DragonSpeak for
speech to text and GoTo for collaboration

[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: great, cool Namaara

[09:36] Namaara MacMoragh: Gentle and I are going to work on a
presentation about brain injury and technology

[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: Wonderful!
[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: That would be perfect

[09:36] Namaara MacMoragh: We’d love to present here as soon as we
have it put together.
[09:37] Namaara MacMoragh: Would that be okay

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: look at us, collaborating!

[09:37] Gentle Heron smiles

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: of course!!!

[09:37] Tom Bukowski applauds

[09:37] Namaara MacMoragh: 🙂

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: I would love it if more folks would team up like that.
[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: We have great orgs and talent here.
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: What kind of tech do you use everyday for collaboration?
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: 1. Second Life
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: 2. Facebook
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: (please help me make this list)

[09:38] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Nanaara & Gentle, Would love to
see that prezi 😀

[09:38] Coughran Mayo: skype

[09:39] jacmacaire Humby: Facebook and life..

[09:39] HB Eternal: linkedin and google +

[09:39] Gentle Heron: email, SL group notices, notecards, Skype

[09:39] BELOVEDROX: Webinars

[09:39] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): google+ hangouts

[09:39] jacmacaire Humby: when you want for second life..

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: What do you use for webinars?

[09:39] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): google talk/im

[09:39] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): skype

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: cool, lots of skype

[09:40] CarmenLittleFawn: hehehe

[09:40] BELOVEDROX: Webex

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Anyone use AdobeConnect?

[09:40] Tom Bukowski: Skype, just cowrote a whole book on Google Docs
which I love

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: oh Tom!

[09:40] Tom Bukowski: http://press.princeton.edu/titles/9882.html

[09:40] Ozma Malibu: Used to use AdobeConnect a lot at ASU

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: That would be interesting to have you share with us.

[09:40] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yup, google docs too

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Note to self: book Tom for NPC meeting.
[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[09:41] Namaara MacMoragh: google docs is great for collaborating but
folks often store way too much there for me

[09:41] Tom Bukowski: Sure, I could try to get some of the other
authors to come too, just email me

[09:41] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): google+ hangouts work well for webinars

[09:41] Ozma Malibu: yes google docs

[09:41] Tom Bukowski: tboellst@uci.edu

[09:41] Namaara MacMoragh: and then share it all… lol

[09:41] Buffy Beale: yay yes Tom is a great presenter

[09:41] BELOVEDROX: some people use something called Base camp

[09:41] Tom Bukowski passes 100 linden to Buffy

[09:41] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): assuming a smaller group size…
or a willingness to broadcast to a much wider group using On Air

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: Wonderful, Tom, thanks, I will book you then!

[09:42] Ozma Malibu: Base camp! love it.

[09:42] Tom Bukowski: great

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, what do you guys think of Base Camp? The
folks at Techsoup us that.
[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: *use

[09:42] Buffy Beale: lol Tom you don’t have to pay me I really admire your work

[09:43] Tom Bukowski: awww Thank you

[09:43] Buffy Beale: 🙂

[09:43] Ozma Malibu: I really like Basecamp because it organizes
projects so nicely, and people can be on the projects that are
relevant to them. You do need to have a responsive admin though.

[09:43] Tom Bukowski: And don’t worry I really didn’t pay you lol

[09:43] Buffy Beale: I haven’t used Base Camp, sounds interesting

[09:43] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): not familiar with Basecamp, but
haven’t be involved in a really complex project that requires a lot of
resource management and a dedicated project management platform

[09:44] Coughran Mayo: BaseCamp is good!

[09:44] Ozma Malibu: With Basecamp it

[09:44] Buffy Beale: lol Tom

[09:44] Namaara MacMoragh: so if we’re all using these other web-based
tools for collaboration I’d like to know how many folks are using SL
for collaboration… and how successful are we with it?

[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: Glitter, is there someone on your team that
could teach us more about Base Camp?

[09:44] Buffy Beale: good point Namaara

[09:44] Glitteractica Cookie: alebez

[09:44] Gentle Heron: Works well for me, Namaara.

[09:44] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): been able to get by using google
calendars to coordinate & collaborate on projects so far

[09:44] alebez: yea, i use basecamp

[09:44] Coughran Mayo: $$ though, it’s not free if you want to do
anything meaningful

[09:44] Glitteractica Cookie: alebez and the rest of the team.
Bulaklak knows a lot too

[09:44] Ozma Malibu: with Basecamp it is easy to find archived items
from old projects quickly if you need them again

[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: ale, how do you feel about doing a meeting about that?

[09:44] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Namaara, Been using SL for
collaboration quite a bit.

[09:44] Glitteractica Cookie: i think it’s an excellent idea

[09:45] alebez: blush. i could be convinced.

[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: hehe wonderful!

[09:45] Glitteractica Cookie: go alebez!

[09:45] Tom Bukowski: Just looked at the website, never used it but
looks cool, didn’t google try this with Wave or something?

[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: We are full of geniuses here!
[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: I love it!

[09:45] Namaara MacMoragh: I think that while we’re offering to talk
about these collaboration and work tools we should explore more how we
can maximize SL too or other virtual environgments.

[09:45] Glitteractica Cookie: Alebez and bulaklak are both the most
humble social media experts i know
[09:45] Glitteractica Cookie: none of the “I’m a rockstar” BS with
those two gems

[09:45] Tom Bukowski: Google Wave or Flow or Red Tide or Wash or
whatever they called it lol

[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: Agreed Namaara

[09:46] Namaara MacMoragh: I know we’ve gotten great presentations
form folks on what they’re doing, but how can we do it too… with all
these tools maybe.

[09:46] Tom Bukowski: Google Flush

[09:46] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Yes, definitely Namaara

[09:46] Namaara MacMoragh: I don’t know a step by step or something

[09:46] Tom Bukowski me apologizes, getting a bit punchy

[09:46] Glitteractica Cookie: What is google flush?

[09:46] Coughran Mayo: Google Wave is extinct

[09:46] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): lol

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: hehe, Tom

[09:46] Namaara MacMoragh: Can you tell what’s on my mind most of the day… lol

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Too early to be punchy.
[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Well, that is why we are here right?
[09:47] Zinnia Zauber: To learn more, engage, collaborate, and support
each other.

[09:47] Coughran Mayo: I’m here for the cookies later

[09:47] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Coughran, I think there are
elements of Wave in Google+… not as focused, but they’re there.

[09:47] Zinnia Zauber: you will get your cookies, mister!

[09:47] HB Eternal: Ooooo cookies!

[09:47] CarmenLittleFawn: hahahaha

[09:47] Zinnia Zauber: hehe

[09:47] CarmenLittleFawn: I have enjoyed all the dialog today

[09:47] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Coughran, Circles can be used for
specific project teams or ‘waves’

[09:48] Namaara MacMoragh: next time you’ll have to wear your blue
fuzzy avi Coughran

[09:48] Coughran Mayo: yes, I am using Google* zealously now

[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: This is wonderful. How many people have brought
in people in to virtual worlds so that you could create more
connections with them as a workspace?

[09:48] Namaara MacMoragh: I have

[09:48] Gentle Heron: yes yes yes

[09:48] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yes

[09:49] Ozma Malibu: yes

[09:49] Tom Bukowski: Yes, doesn’t always work so well, but sometimes
works wonderfully

[09:49] Coughran Mayo: maybe a little

[09:49] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): it’s always an ongoing project…
one at a time
[09:49] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): sometimes takes a while before i’m
able to finally coax someone in 😉

[09:50] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:50] Namaara MacMoragh: I lose folks when I don’t put in the
upfront user training to hedge off the learning curve or at least make
it not feel so formidble

[09:50] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Exactly, Namaara.

[09:50] Gentle Heron: quite so Namaara

[09:50] CarmenLittleFawn: that can happen

[09:51] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Helps when I’m able to provide the
mentoring support up front.

[09:51] Gentle Heron hasn’t seen Brique here in…. quite a while!

[09:51] Namaara MacMoragh: I know Gentle has done a great job with this.

[09:51] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yes definitely 🙂

[09:51] Namaara MacMoragh: I’ve learned a lot from how she introduces new users.

[09:51] CarmenLittleFawn: 🙂

[09:51] Dancers Yao: yes,,need to have many Gentles!

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: I love being the intro teacher for people coming into SL.

[09:52] Namaara MacMoragh: agreed Dancer
[09:52] Namaara MacMoragh: so we need to create a team of trainers

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: I would be happy to be on that team!

[09:52] Namaara MacMoragh: that are like a front line “help” line

[09:52] Gentle Heron laughs at Dancer’s suggestion

[09:52] Tom Bukowski me agrees, can’t have too many Gentles

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: hehe

[09:52] Namaara MacMoragh: Me too

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: an army of Gentles!

[09:53] Gentle Heron: scary thought

[09:53] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I can teach taking a nap
[09:53] Jen (jenelle.levenque) giggling

[09:53] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): formidable ;D

[09:53] Par (parhelion.palou): Onward, Gentle army …

[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: Okay

[09:53] HB Eternal: an angel army if Gentle is involved

[09:53] Gentle Heron: Jen, you know so many tips and tools…..

[09:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!

[09:57] Glitteractica Cookie: or i can

[09:57] Gentle Heron: August 3/4 Virtual Ability hosts its annual
International Disability Rights Affirmation Conference (IDRAC2012).
The theme this year is “A Community of Communities.”

[09:57] Glitteractica Cookie: if anyone wants one, LMK. I have the
texture for the invite

[09:57] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): RFL runs 9 months every
year… Feed a Smile is a serious charity… all your donations feed
school children… only 15% of ACS donations go to research

[09:58] Zinnia Zauber: Great, thank you Magic.

[09:58] Namaara MacMoragh: Thanks everyone for a great meeting. I have
a RL presentation in a few minutes. Talk with you soon.

[09:58] Gentle Heron: Among numerous fantastic international
presenters, our own Chad Mikado will be presenting on a topic of
likely interest to NonProfit Commons members:
[09:58] Gentle Heron: how nonprofits that work with people with
disabilities (but this of course generalizes to all of our audiences)
can demonstrate effective community results.

[09:58] Zotarah Shepherd: Thank you for the great meeting

[09:58] Gentle Heron: Please watch our website for more announcements
about IDRAC2012.

[09:58] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, Zotarah!

[09:58] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, Gentle, that sounds super!
[09:59] Zinnia Zauber: Anymore announcements?

[09:59] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you gentle 🙂

[09:59] Zinnia Zauber: Okay

[09:59] Jen (jenelle.levenque) raises hand

[09:59] Zinnia Zauber: Go for it Jen!

[10:00] Jen (jenelle.levenque): As many of you know our returning
soldiers are having major issues stemming from their service. One
thing we can do is have anyone who works with them ask if they ever
served in uniform

[10:01] Zinnia Zauber: Let me say, this isn’t the meeting we planned
for, but it has been awesome!

[10:01] Tom Bukowski: Yay

[10:01] Jen (jenelle.levenque): What has happened is Dr and counselors
treat the visible symptoms, not the root cause

[10:01] CarynTopia Silvercloud: yes, I enjoyed the meeting

[10:01] Gentle Heron nods to Jen.

[10:02] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Agreed, Jen.

[10:03] Zotarah Shepherd: Awesome people make for an awesome meeting.

[10:03] Zinnia Zauber: Totally!
[10:03] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you everyone for joining us!

[10:03] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): DoD still very concerned about the
rate of self-harm in returning service members.

[10:03] Gentle Heron: as well they should be!

[10:03] Jen (jenelle.levenque): The number of suicides in the US is
higher than the combat KIA

[10:04] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Yes, I agree. Great meeting given
the improv…

[10:04] Zinnia Zauber: indeed

[10:04] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Jen, And it seems they’re still
trying to figure out the causes…

[10:05] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): amazing and very sad Jen 🙁

[10:05] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you all for sharing your ideas and open mic items.

[10:05] Zinnia Zauber: Please contact me with meeting ideas.

[10:06] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): wonder if some of it might come
from TBI, given it’s also an element that’s somewhat unique this time
around with exposure to IEDs

[10:06] Zinnia Zauber: And, field trip ideas as well.

[10:06] Jen (jenelle.levenque): The causes are too much trauma in the
field and too little care when the get home

[10:06] Dancers Yao: @jen..do you know if any of the PTSD virtual
counseling is helping the vets?

[10:07] Zinnia Zauber: I am going to ask my friend who has created a
PTSD sim to join us for a meeting.

[10:07] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I believe Anya Ibor is

[10:07] Par (parhelion.palou): I just saw an article that indicates
virtual counseling has helped … Army is using their own virtual
setup

[10:08] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): the VA recently put out results of
a longitudinal study suggesting that virtual counseling has been
effective

[10:08] Gentle Heron: There are a variety of approaches using VWs and
VR in treating PTSD, some work for some folks and other treatments for
others…. it has to be individualized

[10:08] Coughran Mayo: virtual counseling…that’s a crazy idea

[10:08] Gentle Heron: HAHAHA COughran now stop that

[10:08] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko):
http://www.clinicalpsychiatrynews.com/single-view/va-s-telemental-health…

[10:10] Tom Bukowski: k, I gotta run, but thanks so much for this!

[10:10] Zinnia Zauber: This has been an amazing meeting!
[10:10] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you everyone!

[10:10] Tom Bukowski: I’ll see you all soon – this was great fun…

[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: Last week, we started a discussion about the
creation of NPC.
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: The Mentors are great supports of community
events and we want your thoughts about
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: how we could do a celebration.
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: AND your commitment to doing it.
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: So, we are looking at some dates in Sept for
this celebration.
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: But, we would like to hear from you about how
you want to participate.
[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: How long have you been part of the Nonprofit Commons?
[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: Please, don’t be shy.

[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: Well, we will be asking you to be part of this
celebration and you are welcome to attend the Mentors Meeting after
this meeting to share your ideas and join the team!

[08:55] Panny Bakerly: I learning about how the technology stuff can
be implemented; e.g. Slideshare. Didn’t know it existed until you
brought it to my attention.

Libraries, Museums and Immersive Learning with Valibrarian / Dr. Valerie Hill of Texas Woman’s University School of Library and Information Science

[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: Okay!
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: Now it is time for our guest!
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: Val, do you want to come up here please.

[08:56] Valibrarian Gregg: Shall I stand by my slides? 🙂

[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Dr. Valerie Hill is an adjunct instructor at
TWU School of Library and Information Science and a school librarian.
Her interests include media literacy, human-computer interaction, and
the impact of the digital revolution on education and libraries. As a
National Writing Trainer, she specializes in connecting literature to
writing, digital storytelling and multi-media production.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Sure, that is great
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Can you guys see the slides okay?

[08:56] Buffy Beale: looking great

[08:56] Ethelred Weatherwax: Welcome, Val

[08:56] Panny Bakerly: Welcome!

[08:56] Valibrarian Gregg: Thank you! Glad to be here.

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for joining us Val!

[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: wow– great topic

[08:57] bulaklak: Yes, really exciting!

[08:57] jodinicole8: I can’t really see the slides. Do I need to do something?

[08:57] Valibrarian Gregg: Hello everyone! Welcome to Libraries,
Museums, and Immersive Learning. I am Dr. Valerie Hill (Valibrarian)
but you can call me Val. Currently, I am a school librarian and
professor of library and information science.

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: They should rez for you jodini, up front.

[08:58] Valibrarian Gregg: Zinnia will advance for me (when I get to
slide 2!) thanks

[08:58] jodinicole8: (ok thanks, got it)

[08:58] Valibrarian Gregg: I have been researching the innovation of
virtual worlds for use in education- particularly in libraries and
museums for the past 5 years. You may already be aware of the many
benefits and advantages of virtual worlds for libraries and museums.
(Feel free to type a “yes” in the text chat.)

[08:58] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): ALT click the slides to focus
them faster!

[08:59] Valibrarian Gregg: Stay on this slide please (slide 2)

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Sorry, I got excited. 🙂

[08:59] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 2-

The digital revolution is changing the hierarchy of information from a
“top down” model…where high quality resources were those published
through peer review and traditional authority-based publishing modes
to a different model.
[09:00] Valibrarian Gregg: Today- information is published from the
“bottom up” or from user-generated sources. Youtube and Wikipedia are
usually first choices for information seekers. Anyone can publish
through blogs, wikis, and websites.
[09:00] Valibrarian Gregg: Do you all agree- Have you witnessed this change?

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: yes

[09:00] Jen (jenelle.levenque): yes

[09:00] jodinicole8: yes

[09:00] LovePhillyChick: yes

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: yes

[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: it’s what we base our team’s work on

[09:01] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 3-

This new hierarchy model is the basis for my exploration of virtual
media as a delivery mode. With another librarian colleague, I have
worked on several library exhibits which shared 3D immersive learning
resources for a variety of topics. These exhibits were displayed on
Info Island- a sim where librarians around the globe have collaborated
since 2006.
[09:01] Valibrarian Gregg: These are just a few examples.
[09:01] Valibrarian Gregg: The three exhibits we worked on included:
“Virtual Texas” which featured The Alamo and other Texas symbols,
buildings, and simulations, “Virtual Tornado” which was a live
simulation of a disaster, and “Maya Island” which was an immersive
learning environment set in the ancient Mayan Civilization.
[09:02] Valibrarian Gregg: I will share a little about these 3
exhibits- then what I am working on now.
[09:02] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 4-

In spring of 2011, we built an exhibit called “Virtual Texas” which
featured historical replicas – such as The Alamo and the Texas Capitol
building, circa 1830. The Library of Congress supplied blueprints to
the builder (a native Texan) who hosted live tours on Antiquity, Texas
Island.
[09:03] Valibrarian Gregg: I will pass out landmarks and more info in
a notecard later.
[09:03] Valibrarian Gregg: Has anyone visited Antiquity, Texas?

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: yes!

[09:04] Valibrarian Gregg: The librarians met with the builder of the
historical sim and created additional resources for a display at the
Community Virtual Library Exhibition area. All of the exhibits I am
discussing have been displayed at that landmark, which I will pass
along later.

[09:04] Jo Clarrington: Yes.

[09:04] Valibrarian Gregg: This picture is just the facade- during building.
[09:04] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 5-

Two live tours were scheduled during the Virtual Texas exhibit and
participants were encouraged to dress in historical attire from the
era.
[09:05] Valibrarian Gregg: The tours included historical information
and culminated with fireworks over the capitol buildings rotunda.
Visitors could come to the exhibit and landmarks alone or in groups
throughout the early part of 2011.

[09:05] Suelly Silva (suelly17): Oii ?

[09:05] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 6-

In fall of 2011, we worked with another 3D builder on “Virtual Tornado”.
This was a simulation of a tornado, complete with scattered debris,
rescue vehicles, rescue workers and victims.
[09:06] Valibrarian Gregg: This exhibit was exciting because it
involved more simulation- live and synchronous.
[09:06] Valibrarian Gregg: The role of the librarians was to provide
the best examples of immersive learning and 3D content we could
find…which is very much the same as the role of librarians in a
physical library- only the format is virtual instead of physical.
[09:07] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 7-

The Virtual Tornado Exhibit hosted two live tours and participants
were given of choice of roles: rescue workers (such as firefighters,
paramedics, police officers) or victims.
[09:08] Valibrarian Gregg: Resources on the topic of emergency
preparedness were provided. Participants gave positive feedback
regarding the realism of the immersive experience.

[09:08] Glitteractica Cookie: good use of the tool

[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: Having never been much of a “gamer”-
driving the ambulance was tricky for me!

[09:09] Glitteractica Cookie: i always thought disaster response was
the perfect use of VW

[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: But my son had no problem! The next
generation of learners will find virtual worlds much less complicated.
[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: Do you agree?
[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: yes- Glitteracitca- I think so too
[09:09] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 8-

The third exhibit presented in collaboration with the Texas Library
Association SL Community group and the CVL library was “Maya Island”.
[09:10] Valibrarian Gregg: This exhibit was based on the final project
of the graduating class of the University of Washington’s Certificate
in Virtual Worlds Class of 2012.
[09:10] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 9-
Maya Island included interactive learning activities, such as a
hieroglyphics matching game or musical instruments and drums.
[09:11] Valibrarian Gregg: Ancient astronomy, agriculture and other
examples of the culture were experienced by participants and two live
tours were also offered.
[09:11] Valibrarian Gregg: The exhibit expelled the “end of the world
hype” about the Mayan calendar!
[09:12] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 10-

NOW! Currently, in collaboration with TLA and the Community Virtual
Library, a new exhibit is only display called “Summer in Berlin” which
is based on Germany in the 1920’s.
[09:12] Valibrarian Gregg: Clothing from the time period is offered at
the exhibit and the builder of the sim is an historical consultant for
TV and movies. She specializes in this era.
[09:13] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 11-

Live tours will be offered on July 14th (next Saturday) at 1pm SLT
and August 5th at 1pm SLT. I shot a machinima video during the grand
opening of the exhibit in June 2011 which can be seen on Youtube-
under my username – Valibrarian.
[09:14] Valibrarian Gregg: Machinima of all of the other exhibits I
have discussed can also be viewed on Youtube. The notecard I will
provide has more information.
[09:15] Valibrarian Gregg: Machinima is a great archival tool- which I
find compatible with librarianship. 🙂
[09:15] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 12-

On the topic of machinima, my video from the Maya Island exhibit won
the award for the best educational machinima at the Virtual Worlds
Best Practices in Education Conference 2012.

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: Yay!

[09:15] Valibrarian Gregg: Working with colleagues from the UW
Certificate in Virtual Worlds Program (such as Zinnia here!) was
particularly rewarding because I graduated from the program in 2010
and found it an incredible learning experience.
[09:16] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 13-

The UW Certificate in Virtual Worlds class of 2012 just graduated last
month and, as a final project, the graduates created the Museum of
Virtual Media.
[09:16] Valibrarian Gregg: I encourage you to explore this incredible
project and I plan to collaborate with them and possibly provide a
future exhibit to highlight their work and sim.
[09:17] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 14-

As we consider the future of virtual media in education- particularly
in libraries and museums, I would like to point out that many of the
UW colleagues met earlier this year at the Federal Consortium of
Virtual Worlds Conference in Washington D.C.
[09:17] Valibrarian Gregg: Witnessing the numerous high quality
projects and involvement of the military and the government in virtual
worlds was validating for pioneers in the field of 3D immersive
learning. Meeting colleagues physically (after working for months or
years in a virtual environment) was intriguing because colleagues
realized they knew each other through that shared sense of presence
experienced in a virtual world.
[09:18] Valibrarian Gregg: The friendships formed are exactly like
those in rl. Anyone agree?

[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Totally!

[09:18] Buffy Beale: I sure do yes

[09:18] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Absolutely

[09:18] Panny Bakerly: Indeed

[09:18] Svea Morane: Perhaps even deeper than RL

[09:19] Valibrarian Gregg: Slide 15-
Research on virtual worlds used for education, libraries, and museums
continues to expand. I am honored to work with a global community of
learners who bravely embrace new media while striving to maintain the
high standards of traditional librarianship and academic credibility.
[09:19] Valibrarian Gregg: I have a notecard with landmarks and
machinima links. IM me if you would like me to drop it to you. Zinnia
also has the notecard.

[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Who wants a notecard?

[09:20] Panny Bakerly: I do.

[09:20] Valibrarian Gregg: I would be happy to answer any questions.

[09:20] jodinicole8: yes please

[09:20] Robert (rzepczr): Me too, please.

[09:20] Svea Morane: please yes on the notecard

[09:20] LovePhillyChick: me too

[09:20] Jen (jenelle.levenque) raises hand for NC

[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: This is wonderful Val! Thank you! Questions for Val?

[09:20] Zotarah Shepherd: I do

[09:20] Valibrarian Gregg: The notecard contains landmarks and links
to the machinima described.

[09:20] Dancers Yao: yes

[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: I’ll pass out the notecards, Val.
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Please address questions.

[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Jen?

[09:21] Panny Bakerly: Are there any measurable statistic to use to
promote a virtual worlds for management buyin?

[09:21] Jo Clarrington: I would like a notecard. Thanks.

[09:21] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Just wanted a notecard

[09:22] Buffy Beale: I would yes please

[09:22] Valibrarian Gregg: As for promote virtual worlds – the
research-consulting company most people refer to is KZero. KZero
reports on the growth and development of virtual worlds for all
purposes on a global scale.
[09:23] Valibrarian Gregg: Please IM me if you did not receive the
notecard. 🙂 thanks

[09:23] Zotarah Shepherd waits for a Notecard

[09:23] Valibrarian Gregg: http://www.kzero.co.uk/

[09:23] Svea Morane: Val, in your setting, have you been able to
demonstrate positive financial return, or positive return from a
marketing perspective?

[09:23] Panny Bakerly: Good to know…thank you.

[09:23] Zotarah Shepherd: TY

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Did I miss anyone for the notecard?

[09:24] Robert (rzepczr): me.

[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: me

[09:24] Valibrarian Gregg: All of my work has been in a university
setting. I have worked with librarians, as well, in both public and
special libraries. Most of my colleagues have worked in virtual worlds
as volunteers.

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: sent!

[09:25] Robert (rzepczr): got it, thanks!

[09:25] LovePhillyChick: ty
[09:25] LovePhillyChick: got it

[09:25] Glitteractica Cookie: got it

[09:25] Valibrarian Gregg: Getting adminitrative support has been
problematic for many. However, because early adopters believe so
strongly in the benefits- they are often willing to continue (with
patience).

[09:25] jacmacaire Humby: same.. 🙂

[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: Great info on the notecards, anyone else I missed?

[09:26] Valibrarian Gregg: Any other questions?

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Val, what are you most excited about the future
of learning?

[09:27] Valibrarian Gregg: I am excited about the potential for
learning across the global on a personally meaningful & highly
creative scale.

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: Excellent!

[09:28] Panny Bakerly: Can we get a copy of the presentation?

[09:28] Valibrarian Gregg: But- I am aware of many problems that have
arisen due to the digital revolution…..and am exploring ways to
teach digital citizenship and information literacy (beyond trivial
social media).

[09:28] Buffy Beale: This wasa great presentation thanks!

[09:28] Valibrarian Gregg: Thank you very much.

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: What would you tell people who are shy about
virtual worlds to give it a try?

[09:29] Valibrarian Gregg: I can put this presentation on slideshare
(under Valibrarian).

[09:29] Panny Bakerly: Thank you!

[09:29] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): ty Valerie! Great Work! Great
Presentation!

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Val, that would be great!

[09:29] Jo Clarrington: Thanks!

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: I have had the honor to work with Val for
several years now and I am so pleased that you all have now met her.

[09:29] jodinicole8: Wonderful, thank you. Very useful information!

[09:30] Valibrarian Gregg: For people who are shy- I would say virtual
worlds are a tremendous opportunity! You do not have to compete with
any extraverts!

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: lol

[09:30] Panny Bakerly: ㋡

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: That is great, Val!
[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you very much, Val! This was wonderful!

[09:31] Valibrarian Gregg: Thank you for having me.

[09:31] Zotarah Shepherd: Thank you Val. This is great!

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: You are most welcome!

[09:31] Jen (jenelle.levenque): ********APPPLLLAAAUUUSSSEEE********

[09:31] Valibrarian Gregg: I hope to see some of you at the Summer in
Berlin Tour on July 14th—1pm

[09:31] Dancers Yao: thank you Val wonderful work

[09:31] Chayenn: great presentation

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Do check out the Berlin Project!

[09:31] Svea Morane: Very nice work Val. Thank you for sharing it.

[09:31] Buffy Beale: inspiring to see it continuing to grow

[09:31] jacmacaire Humby: Merci.. 🙂

Cliveden is a historic site owned by the National Trust for Historic
Preservation and located in the Germantown neighborhood of Northwest
Philadelphia. Built as a country house by attorney Benjamin Chew,
Cliveden was completed in 1767 and was home to seven generations of
Chew family members. Cliveden has long been famous as the site of the
Battle of Germantown in 1777, as well as for its elegant architecture
and furnishing.

New research is unearthing a unique African American history including
stories of lifestyles and struggles for freedom.

TechSoup Announcements

[08:40] Zinnia Zauber: Okay! Let’s Get going with TechSoup Announcements!
[08:41] Zinnia Zauber: bulaklak take it away!

[08:41] bulaklak: Hi, folks!

[08:41] Glitteractica Cookie: hi bulaklak

[08:41] Buffy Beale: yay bulaklak

[08:42] bulaklak: A few quick TechSoup announcements today.
[08:42] bulaklak: TOMORROW is the last day of our fiscal year, and
therefor the last day for many of our programs during which you can
order your 2011 allotment of software.
[08:42] bulaklak: It starts over on July 1, so don’t worry.
[08:43] bulaklak: But you just may be able to get MORE by ordering
both before AND after that date.
[08:43] bulaklak: Our tech writer Patrick Duggan explains it all here
[08:43] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LgnFqX

[08:43] Ethelred Weatherwax: I’ve placed my order!

[08:44] bulaklak: In case you ever wanted to know how to get more out
of TechSoup — there’s a lot we can do for you! — we have a helpful
free webinar coming up.
[08:44] bulaklak: Called none other than How to Get the Most out of TechSoup
[08:44] bulaklak: https://cc.readytalk.com/r/ej6l51svam5e
[08:45] bulaklak: That is on July 12
[08:45] bulaklak: So you may remember over the last few weeks me
mentioning the Microsoft Local Impact Map
[08:46] bulaklak: I introduced you to our newest teammate Bea Dominguez
[08:46] bulaklak: You probably remember that she was having some
serious rezzing issues!
[08:46] bulaklak: We’re still trying to work those out so she can be
more than a floating head in water.

[08:46] Glitteractica Cookie: her avatar name is trichetriche

[08:47] bulaklak: Anyway, she is gathering stories for the Local
Impact Map which demonstrate all the ways social benefit orgs use
technology to fulfull their missions
[08:47] bulaklak: We’ll have her do a full presentation soon, but in
the meantime, be thinking about stories you might want to share with
her

[08:47] Zinnia Zauber: Will she be interested in the stories we just
showcased at SL9B?

[08:48] bulaklak: You can also check out this article about the tool
we are using to present the stories here
[08:48] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/N8ullU
[08:48] bulaklak: Microsoft wrote about it on their Corporate Citizen blog
[08:48] bulaklak: Zinnia, I am sure she would be.

[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, Zinnia

[08:48] bulaklak: We will also be launching a community newsletter, so
there’s places for lots of stories.

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: Super! “Wishes Granted” is an ongoing project
for us at the Nonprofit Commons.

[08:49] bulaklak: Well I think that is it for today.

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!

[08:49] bulaklak: Did everyone see Glitter’s new outfit?

[08:50] Eliza (eliza.madrigal) zooms

[08:50] alebez: omg, yes. looking good, glitter.

[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: Stunning!

[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: This old thing??

[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: 😉
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: lol

[08:50] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): Let’s go belly dancing! Eeep!

Mentors Central
[08:50] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, Mentors Central!
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: First, a reminder that we have the Mentors
Meeting after this meeting to help you out!

[08:51] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): haha

[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: Second, many thanks to everyone that supported
the SL9B exhibit for the Nonprofit Commons!
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: Who got their new wings there?

[08:51] Brena Benoir: /raises hand

[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: Yay!

[08:52] Gentle Heron: It was fun taking people around all the exhibits.

[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: These grid wide community events are very important.
[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: Even a great learning experience, right Gentle?

[08:52] Gentle Heron chuckles

[08:52] Buffy Beale: nice job Zinnia it looked great

[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, Buffy!
[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: Our goal is to keep added more books to the
“Wishes Granted” project.
[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: So, I hope that you will join us in the future
and share your story of positive impact.
[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: Third, last week Jen mentioned our goal to have
more workshops.
[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: We all know that you have to lead by example. Right?
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: So we are putting together a list of those
ideas and instructors.
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: What would be wonderful is if you send me or
any of the Mentors a notecard with ideas and contacts.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Here are some ideas that were brought up.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: How to create a nonprofit
How to create a tax exempt in the US
NPC Office Operations
NPC Community Development
Nonprofit Governance
Doing Presentations in SL
Marketing Your Organization
How to create an event
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Some of these we have covered during past
Mentor Centrals.
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: So, that leads to today’s lesson!

[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: it would be great if we could start to
bring in topics we’ve done webinarson at TechSoup and have an extended
workshop here… for example social media marketing of events comes to
mind
[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: What do you think, Bulaklak and Alebez?
[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: just an idea
[08:57] alebez: i think that’s a good echo

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Great, Glitter.
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: We have discussed having some sessions other
times, so those might be the right fit for sure.
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: And, it would give more Techsoup staff access
to Second Life.

[08:58] Glitteractica Cookie: nice, let’s discuss the logistics later

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Super!
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, so how to create a notecard.
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you know how to create a notecard?

[08:59] Gentle Heron nods.

[08:59] Panny Bakerly raises her hand

[08:59] Coughran Mayo raises hand

[08:59] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yes

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Why is important to use notecards?

[08:59] Gentle Heron: Because the message persists!

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Right!

[08:59] Coughran Mayo: durable communication

[08:59] Panny Bakerly: I cant rely on my memory…

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: lol Penny

[09:00] Gentle Heron: Very good point, Panny.

[09:00] Coughran Mayo: consistent instructions

[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you use notecards in your offices
or comm with others?

[09:00] Panny Bakerly: I do

[09:00] Gentle Heron does.

[09:00] Coughran Mayo: yes
[09:01] Coughran Mayo: notecard giver scripts are valuable

[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: Excellent!
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: very!
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: What can you put into a notecard?

[09:01] Gentle Heron: in addition to text, you can insert stuff like
landmarks, objects, other notecards…..

[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: Right!

[09:02] Gentle Heron: can’t insert calling cards, I found out.

[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: So, a notecard is more that just text.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: It will not get capped, like so many IMs and notices do.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: I find that I use notecards to keep notes for
myself, like Panny.

[09:02] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): the objects must be full perms
before you can copy to notecard… fyi

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: I also use them to communicate with others.

[09:03] Buffy Beale: We have a notecard giver at Bridges too

[09:03] Gentle Heron nods to any1

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Right, Magic!

[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Full Perms!
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: I am always chanting Full Perms to my students.
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: So, very quick, now that our speaker has arrived.
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: when you open your inventory
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: you will see the little plus at the bottom
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: You click on that and choose New Notecard
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: You can title it right away

[09:05] KeishaTaylor: Hi everyone

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: If you missed a chance to, it will just be
called New Note.
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Welcome Keisha!
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Let’s get you started, please have a seat.

[09:05] KeishaTaylor: I think I am still loading 🙂

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: okay
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Please push the stand button at the bottom of
your screen.
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Then you can aim to sit up here with me.
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: So, once you have a new notecard, start typing!
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Remember to save!
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Okay
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: That is it!

Big Data for Development with Keisha Taylor of TechSoup Global

[09:06] Glitteractica Cookie: Welcome Keisha! How’s the weather in
London for you this evening?

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for joining us Keisha!

[09:07] KeishaTaylor: Well it started off cold and rainy, but now the
sun is shining 🙂

[09:07] jacmacaire Humby: I’m really sorry to go already.. I have to
run.. A very nice week-end to all..

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: I posted two of your websites you gave me up on
the front.
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Take care Jac!

[09:07] KeishaTaylor: ok Thanks Zinna

[09:07] jacmacaire Humby: Thanks Zinnia.. Bye

[09:08] KeishaTaylor: Hi everyone

[09:08] Gentle Heron: Hello Keisha.

[09:09] Dancers Yao: welcome

[09:09] Buffy Beale: welcome Keisha 🙂

[09:09] KeishaTaylor: Today I am just going to talk a little about
‘big data’ and what this means for nonprofits. Do you know what ‘big
data’ is?

[09:09] Serene Jewell: Data that won’t fit on my little computer?
[09:10] Serene Jewell: 🙂

[09:10] Buffy Beale: lol Serene

[09:10] KeishaTaylor: @ Serene – that is where the cloud comes in!

[09:11] Serene Jewell: Honestly, I hear the term all the time but have
never thought about exactly what it means. I assumed it means big
databases.

[09:13] KeishaTaylor: well big data refers to digital data which can
come from the sensors on products you use to your gps, mobile phones,
social media data
[09:13] KeishaTaylor: apologies my computer is a bit slow. I wish i could talk!
[09:13] KeishaTaylor: 🙂

[09:13] Panny Bakerly: do you mean multi-media data?

[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: We are all supporting you here, Keisha.

[09:14] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): 🙂

[09:14] Glitteractica Cookie: You are doing great keisha

[09:15] KeishaTaylor: that an much more. You are contributing to big
data right now

[09:15] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): I am reading the wikipedia
page… I think big data means data sets that are much larger than a
single database on a single system can feasibly run…. so big data
must run in a different architecture… entirely… parallel and
distributed… like Google uses to do instant searches of the entire
Internet

[09:16] Glitteractica Cookie: interesting… thx for reading that to us

[09:16] KeishaTaylor: your mobile phones are saying where you ar. i
recommend reading Mc Kinsey’s report on big data for a better
understanding. http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/mgi/research/technology_and_innovation/…
[09:17] KeishaTaylor: though it is not nonprofit specific it does
delve into what big data is.
[09:17] KeishaTaylor: big data can be used for development because
when all this data is gathered over time it can help in understanding
what is need and where and by whom.
[09:18] KeishaTaylor: do you kbnow Ushahidi?

[09:19] Gentle Heron: no

[09:19] Panny Bakerly: I don’t.

[09:19] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): http://ushahidi.com/

[09:19] KeishaTaylor: they have developed technology which is being
used to track what is going on in real-time and respond to disasters
http://ushahidi.com/

[09:19] Buffy Beale: I know of it yes, a tracking site for stats in a
way, such as an emergency

[09:20] KeishaTaylor: @magic then there is also Google flu trends.
that uses big data (in this case from Google to look at if there may
be a flu outbreak
[09:21] KeishaTaylor: at the internation level the UN Global Pulse is
also looking into working on data philanthropy. they want
coorporations to give data that they gather when people use their
technology to solve global and community problems

[09:22] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): yes, that’s right… data such
as purchases of over-the-counter drugs are tracked and analyzed.. for
disease outbreaks… similar apps in agriculture … BioSurveillance

[09:22] KeishaTaylor: http://www.unglobalpulse.org/

[09:22] Panny Bakerly: Are there any privacy issues there?

[09:22] Gentle Heron: HAHAHA sure Panny, but “they” know you asked that!

[09:23] KeishaTaylor: @panny – there are privacy issues

[09:23] Eliza (eliza.madrigal) laughs

[09:23] KeishaTaylor:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/apr/22/big-data-privacy-inform…

[09:23] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): most of the public data sets
are de-identified… all privacy info removed

[09:24] KeishaTaylor: a supermarket sent information to a girl who was
pregnant before she even told her parents because the track purchases
and target customers based on this

[09:24] bulaklak: I remember that story.
[09:25] bulaklak: They sent her diaper and formula coupons.

[09:25] KeishaTaylor: @magic a lot of it is de-identfied – but there
is a possiblity that the more people provide data t more easily it is
to reidentify people

[09:25] Panny Bakerly: guess they lost a customer

[09:26] KeishaTaylor: which is why nonprofits need to start small and
engage with their communities. find out what problems they want to
solve and then work to get data which can help them address it

[09:26] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): some companies are taking
voter records and matching them with di-identified data… to
re-identify you… theoretically … they can always do that.. it’s
the “statistical database problem”

[09:27] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): wow

[09:27] KeishaTaylor: for sure there will be a lot of use of data for
the upcoming US elections
[09:28] KeishaTaylor:
http://www.campaignsandelections.com/print/315777/big-data-is-a-big-fact…

[09:28] Serene Jewell: Is there a set of big data that allows regular
people to track the companies that are tracking us?

[09:28] KeishaTaylor: this now brings me to open data

[09:28] Buffy Beale: good question Serene

[09:30] KeishaTaylor: there are tools that can be used to gather and
track big data, but not really to track the companies that are
tracking us

[09:30] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): there are about 20,000
Internet tracking companies…. huge industry…
[09:30] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): invisible… muwah

[09:31] KeishaTaylor: the open data movement is aiming fo r as much
transparency and openess as possible though. Governments have started
releaseing data in downloadable formats so people can do interesting
things with it.
[09:32] KeishaTaylor: you can have a look at what data is available
from your government online. Have a look here for some resources
http://opengovernmentdata.org/data/catalogues/

[09:32] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): Wikipedia.. about Open Data
Movement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_data

[09:33] KeishaTaylor: you can take the opportunity to find out if
there is information there that can help you. that you can combine
with your own data to visualise and tell compelling stories
[09:33] KeishaTaylor: some of the apps that you might use are being
built from the governments open data
[09:33] KeishaTaylor: and from crowdsourc
[09:34] KeishaTaylor: crowdsourcing
[09:34] KeishaTaylor: do you know what crowdsourcing is?

[09:34] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): wikipedia is example

[09:34] Gentle Heron: “the wisdom of the crowd”

[09:36] KeishaTaylor: yes people can sometimes find things to do with
your data that you never could have dreamt about.
[09:36] KeishaTaylor: i think i am out of time now. i only just
scratched the surface

[09:36] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): are there cloud resources
available to nonprofits? like hadoop installations?

[09:36] Buffy Beale: interesting topic Keisha thanks

[09:36] KeishaTaylor: ican send you some stuff on this

[09:37] bulaklak: I think the challenge for a lot of nonprofits will
be to have someone on staff who can wade through all the data the
gov’t releases and parse it, know what is valuable, and figure out how
to make it useful.

[09:37] KeishaTaylor: and if you send me any questions. Hadoop is one
popular toole

[09:37] Serene Jewell: Thank you for the links, Keisha, they are very
interesting.

[09:37] KeishaTaylor: @bulaklak that is true

[09:37] bulaklak: that will likely become a new track within nonprofit
communications careers.

[09:37] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): yes great talk… I learned
alot… thank you!

[09:37] bulaklak: yes, really enjoyed this talk, Keisha!

[09:38] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): <— may want to teach a class
on this some day!

[09:38] Buffy Beale: yay a1 that would be great

[09:38] bulaklak: You are welcome to come back here any time and give
us more information as it becomes available.

[09:38] Gentle Heron: Thanks Keisha. How do you anticipate nonprofits
using this massive amount of data?

[09:38] KeishaTaylor: i will send you some information ia Zinnia

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: Perfect
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: We can post that on the blog with links.
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: There is so much! Right?

[09:39] Ethelred Weatherwax: Buklak — the challenge for many
non-profits is that they have no staff, much less a dedicated IT
person.

[09:39] bulaklak: @Magic that would be great. I think a lot of us
nonprofits communications professionals would like to know more about
how to read and use data effectively but don’t know where to start.

[09:39] KeishaTaylor: they have to think small i think, and make sure
that the data they need is part of the big data landscape

[09:39] Buffy Beale: how true Eth it sure is in my case

[09:39] Gentle Heron agrees with Ethelred.

[09:39] KeishaTaylor: i can also send a list of free visualisation tools

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: great!

[09:39] bulaklak: We’ve been trained in how to influence the media but
this is a whole other ballgame.

[09:40] KeishaTaylor: andme other practcal information. I think my
time is up. but if you have any final questions let me know

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Keisha is a wealth of data herself!

[09:40] bulaklak: Yes!

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Any questions before we go to Open Mic?

[09:40] Serene Jewell: Thanks so much for the info, Keisha.

[09:41] KeishaTaylor: Thank you guys for listening! I really enjoyed
it. It is my first time too!

[09:41] Glitteractica Cookie: Keisha, please come back to a future NPC meeting

[09:41] bulaklak: Yes, thank you, Keisha. And please do come back
again. We’d love to hear more whenever you would like to stop by.

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Super!

[09:41] Buffy Beale: yay Keisha come join the fun here too at the gatherings

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you very much Keisha!

[09:41] Dancers Yao: thanks…very helpful

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: She did great just starting yesterday in SL.

[09:42] Glitteractica Cookie: amazing

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you so much!

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: Okay!

[09:42] Buffy Beale: lol I’ll say, even sitting can be difficult so
well done Keisha!

[09:42] KeishaTaylor: @buffy it did take a while to sort out how to sit!
[09:42] KeishaTaylor: at least i still have myclothes on

[09:43] Buffy Beale: lol me too when I started.. sitting I mean

Open Mic / Announcements

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: Who has an Open Mic Announcement?

[09:43] Buffy Beale: Hand up

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: Super, Buffy! Go for it!

[09:44] Buffy Beale: thanks Z
[09:44] Buffy Beale: I think the NPC is coming up to our 5th
anniversary and wondered if we would like to have a grand, the
grandest of all events?
[09:44] Buffy Beale: or is it 6, I forget now
[09:45] Buffy Beale: just putting it out there for discussion as the
time goes quickly

[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: Good idea

[09:45] Buffy Beale: that’s all I wanted to say but it would be nice
to mark the celebration

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, when would that be?

[09:46] Buffy Beale: I think it’s in August?

[09:46] Brena Benoir: Sounds right Buffy
[09:46] Brena Benoir: Maybe a ball or something?

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, a big ball.

[09:46] Buffy Beale: sure that would be fun

[09:47] Zinnia Zauber: It would be important that everyone be part of it.

[09:47] Buffy Beale: we can talk about it at the mentor’s meeting

[09:47] Brena Benoir: are there others that would interested in being
part of the team to make that happen?

[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, it needs to be a team.
[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: Anyone want to join Buffy on this important event?

[09:48] Buffy Beale: any1 did a great session once on how to organize an event

[09:48] Brena Benoir: TEAM=Together Everyone Accomplishes More

[09:48] Buffy Beale: maybe we could get a repeat of that
[09:49] Buffy Beale: The NPC is what we make of it not just show up
and sit our avatars for a few hours once a week

[09:49] Brena Benoir: I would be willing to be part of a team to help
put a celebration together

[09:49] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, let’s get some words and dates figured out
and make a call for help.

[09:49] Buffy Beale: and it always seems to be the same people so it
would be great if we could see some new faces helping

[09:50] Zinnia Zauber: Glitter, don’t you think this would be a boom
for marketing TechSoup?

[09:50] Buffy Beale: ok Z sounds great

[09:51] Glitteractica Cookie: sorry, missed that

[09:51] Buffy Beale: maybe we could add this to the MOU… participate
on at least one team for an event lol

[09:51] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, good idea

[09:51] Brena Benoir: I think that sounds like a good idea Buffy

[09:51] Zinnia Zauber: We are discussing celebrating NPC’s birthday in August.

[09:51] Buffy Beale: I do understand time is hard for a lot of folks,
me included lately so no pressure

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: I think it would be a great marketing moment
for the orgs and TechSoup.

[09:52] Brena Benoir: It’s also a great opportunity to forge more
networks and friendships as well

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: Just checking, does anyone else have an announcement?

[09:52] Glitteractica Cookie: We could talk more about the idea later,
and look into options. I’m not sure about timing with all the other
stuff we are doing in August right now, but i’m open to looking into
it

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, great!

[09:53] Buffy Beale: we could make it in September, the idea is not to
let it pass without celebrating it

[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: yes we could

[09:53] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): Thanks Zinnia, everyone :::waves::::

[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Eliza!

[09:53] Buffy Beale: bye Eliza

[09:53] Eliza (eliza.madrigal): bye for now

[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: take care
[09:53] Zinnia Zauber: Okay
[09:54] Zinnia Zauber: Let’s go with our links to connect and events to attend!

[09:54] Chayenn: i would love to be part of but for now PY1 is

TechSoup Announcements

[08:45] Glitteractica Cookie: So… with that… Bulaklak, do you have any updates from our end of things at TechSoup?
[08:45] bulaklak: Yes!
[08:45] bulaklak: Thank you.
[08:46] bulaklak: So, as some of you may know, Twitter rocked the world yesterday by going out for a stunning 45 minutes.
[08:46] bulaklak: Incidentally, this was right during our scheduled tweet chat on how NGOs use data.
[08:46] bulaklak: So we are rescheduling the #npdata tweet chat for Wednesday, June 27 at 10am PT
[08:46] bulaklak: Read all about it here, as well as how to participate
[08:47] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LXmJnq
[08:47] bulaklak: We partnered with our London office to put this one together so it should be a good mix of people from different parts of the world. We hope you can come!
[08:48] bulaklak: One other announcement. June 30 is just a little over a week away. And that is Fiscal Year End for TechSoup as well as many of our donor partners.
[08:48] bulaklak: If you think you have not gotten your allotment of software donations for 2011, get ’em before June 30!
[08:48] bulaklak: More info on that here
[08:49] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LgnFqX
[08:49] bulaklak: Oh! And one other heads up.
[08:50] bulaklak: We will not be streaming next week’s OCTRIBE into Second Life.
[08:50] Buffy Beale: awww
[08:50] bulaklak: Our wonderful friend and colleague is off getting super smart at Singularity University.
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: Due to low attendance at the last few OCTRIBE meetups
[08:50] bulaklak: Oh, and that.
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: Heh
[08:50] Ozma Malibu: sorry to break in but – Message from Zinnia: she sends everyone her best, and is giving a lecture at her 20th college reunion this morning.
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: that is nice
[08:50] Ozma Malibu: so that explains it 🙂
[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: Thanks Oz
[08:51] bulaklak: And by our wonderful friend and colleague I mean InKenzo. So do wish her well with all her awesome new learning.
[08:51] Ozma Malibu: Rhiannon is also at Singularity. I am amazed that I know 2 people there.
[08:51] Ozma Malibu: both deserve it!!
[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: Thanks Bulaklak… Alebez, do you have any additional announcements?
[08:52] bulaklak: You can still attend OCTRIBE by using the Adobe Connect link we will provide.
[08:52] Ozma Malibu: I have such smart friends.
[08:52] alebez: no, bulaklak hit em’!
[08:52] bulaklak: So the virtual component continues at least in one way!
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, thanks for the updates

Mentors Central

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, so now we’re off to Mentor’s Central. Do our mentors have updates today?

[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: can you update the group on what the mentors are? What they do?
[08:55] Jen: I’m looking into workshops outside this meeting
[08:55] Jen: Mentors are people who volunteer to assist with SL functions
[08:55] Jen: We may also have RL expertise to impart as well
[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: The weekly mentor’s meeting happens right after this meeting, at 10am SLT
[08:56] Jen: We usually meet immediately after this meeting
[08:56] Jen: Thanks Glitter
[08:56] Jen: I’m interested in what topics you might like to have that might take longer than we have time for in this meeting
[08:57] Jen: My idea is like a Leadership Conference
[08:57] Jen: So if you have topics please forward them to me
[08:57] Jen: I have one I did in two fridays on office operation
[08:58] Jen: Any questions for Mentors?
[08:58] Jen: As far as I know we’re still planning to meet after the main meeting
[08:58] Glitteractica Cookie: Folks can also email nonprofitcommons@techsoup.org and we will forward the questions to the mentors, if they think of one later
[08:58] Jen: Or IM me any time
[08:59] Jen: Be happy to hear from you
[08:59] Hour Destiny: Some of us are also available via Twitter.

[08:59] Buffy Beale: thanks Jenelle
[08:59] Jen: OK, back to our regularly scheduled meeting
[08:59] Glitteractica Cookie: there is a twitter list of all NPC twitter handles. Bullaklak, is that on the @npsl twitter account page?
[08:59] Glitteractica Cookie: if not, it should be
[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: (good project for volunteer or for zinnia)
[09:00] bulaklak: I will check.
[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, with that…. we have a speaker now
[09:00] bulaklak: But yes, if it’s not, I’ll make it happen.
[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: thanks pal

Machinimart with Gaberoonie Szondi / Gabe Salgado

[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: Now, I’m happy to bring you all (well, technically, Zinnia did the work, but I’m happy to announce) Gaberoonie Szondi / Gabe speaking about Machinimart !!
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: Gabe, please take a seat upfront
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: Give it up y’all!
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: WELCOME!!
[09:01] bulaklak: Welcome, Gabe!
[09:01] alebez: wahoo, gabe. welcome.
[09:01] CarmenLittleFawn: welcome 🙂
[09:01] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: thank you 🙂
[09:02] Jen: ********APPPLLLAAAUUUSSSEEE********
[09:02] Buffy Beale: Cheering!!
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: =^.^= Meow!
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: =^.^= Meow!
[09:02] bulaklak: lol
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i’m really amazed to see how much goes on here, and what you all do
[09:02] CarmenLittleFawn: ggiggles
[09:02] Dancers Yao: welcome
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: (it’s my one trick)
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: each and every one
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so much, brought together in one place
[09:02] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, my name’s Gabe Salgado in RL and I work with a company called Machinimart
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i worked for many years in nonprofit education
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: after having studied computer science and graphic design in college
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I started designing informal educational curricula
[09:03] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i was very passionate about it
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: education meant a lot to me, reaching young people in ways that are relevant to them
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but i sort of hit a wall
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i started working with cultural material, music, video etc
[09:04] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: media related content that was meaningful to young people
[09:05] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but I will never forget the time when I tried to roll out a new video curriculum, only to discover that the agencies I worked with refused to update to the current version of Quicktime…
[09:05] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: meaning they could not view my videos
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, basically, that was the tension between technology and education.
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: shortly afterwards, I joined a virtual world startup
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: this was in 2007, when there was still a lot of hype about SL.
[09:06] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and a lot of investment in virtual worlds
[09:07] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: ever since, I have been involved in SL and other virtual worlds
[09:07] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: today, Machinimart does primarily 3 things.
[09:07] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: one is, machinima production as an artistic endeavor.
[09:08] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: secondly, we have several brands in SL, several franchises with lines of products
[09:08] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: thirdly, we do development of educational projects in SL.
[09:08] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the first (machinima) is not profitable at all, and it is purely artistic
[09:09] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the second (stores in SL) is fairly profitable, and is actually very interesting
[09:09] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: it’s not a major source of income, but we find it amazing that people are willing to pay for virtual goods….
[09:10] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the third (educational projects in SL) is what really consumes our time.
[09:10] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: because what we’re really concerned with, is:
[09:10] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: how can we harness the power of SL to reach people who are not familiar with SL?
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: with our educational projects, we have two different categories
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: corporate and academic
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: examples.
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: for corporate, we do training for companies
[09:11] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: new staff learn their jobs by performing them virtually in SL
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: for academic, here we get very experimental
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: build immersive environments as we are all familiar with here, and create an experience for students
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: where every interaction is a learning experience.
[09:12] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I’m going to talk about the challenges that come with working in SL.
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: first of all, why SL? there are other platforms, right? why would anyone choose to learn in SL?
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: anyone?
[09:13] Buffy Beale: it’s immersive?
[09:13] Ozma Malibu: it’s fun
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, but warcraft is immersive, too, right?
[09:13] Hour Destiny: It’s where most of the people are that are in virtual worlds.
[09:13] Hour Destiny: Other than in MMOs.
[09:13] Buffy Beale: we can make things and take photos
[09:13] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and Grand Theft Auto is fun.
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so what is it about SL?
[09:14] Buffy Beale: we can make money?
[09:14] Hour Destiny: One can also build and SL seems to have the best tools for that so far.
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, Hour
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: building
[09:14] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: not only can anyone who has the will come here and build
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but professionals can lift something up here very fast
[09:15] Carl Solutionary: SL is a mature market ecosystem… you can buy anything.. and it’s on the cheap
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: that’s another thing: assets
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you can buy what you need when you don’t have the time to make it
[09:15] Glitteractica Cookie: Yes, I chose to launch the techsoup nonprofit community in SL b/c it had critical mass, aong the virtual environs that allowed users to be flexible and create their own content
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: or you can get it open source
[09:15] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: rezz it, there it is
[09:15] Glitteractica Cookie: this is the techsoup nonprofit community in SL, in case you didn’t know
[09:16] Glitteractica Cookie: we meet ppl where they are at
[09:16] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: a huge, rich world. you can build what you need, and you can buy other items to rez.
[09:16] Glitteractica Cookie: also, i was under the assumption that the platform would better integrate web on a prim, but that hasn’t really been the case so far, very well
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, I call this rapid prototyping. Let’s say an agency in RL wants to do something in a virtual world. in many cases, you can prototype it for them in just a few hours!
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and in amazing quality sometimes.
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: SL as a virtual world platform has that X-Factor.
[09:17] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, and the three dimensional aspects are found in SL but not many other spaces allow you to walk through an experience
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, exactly
[09:17] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: totally immersive
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so now, the bad news
[09:18] Glitteractica Cookie: yes….?”
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: one of them is… the interface. the viewer.
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I will come back to this
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but suffice it to say
[09:18] Hour Destiny: Horrible infrastructure and customer service?
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: most of what you see on your viewer, the interface
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: most of those controls
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: are not useful to everyday, RL people… casual users
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: students
[09:18] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the people you’re trying to reaach.
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i will come back to the viewer issue later.
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: secondly is the time
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the time it takes to learn
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and the time it takes to use
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: time takes on a whole new meaning in SL
[09:19] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and something that people familiar with and devoted to SL have in common is they recognize this
[09:19] Hour Destiny: Learning curve.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, it takes time to learn.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hours to learn the basics
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hundreds of hours to learn advanced things…
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but not just that.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: when you log in, time slows to a crawl
[09:20] Hour Destiny: I’m not the only Hour? 🙂 Sorry, couldn’t resist.
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: takes up to a minute to log in…
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hehe
[09:20] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: 😀
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and once you’re in, people take the time to aclimate…
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: check IMs, check your outfit, all that…
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: time takes on a meaning that most people I know in RL aren’t willing to take
[09:21] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: Most of all, this might be our biggest challenge:
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I’ve found that people familiar with SL, those who know its strengths
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: often are baffled by how “RL people” have no patience for SL’s shortcomings.
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so there is a gap.
[09:22] CarmenLittleFawn: heheheh true
[09:22] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, it takes time to rez, yes, you have to rebake, you might crash, you might have to relog…
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we understand that
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the rest of the world doesn’t have the patience for it.
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so they miss out.
[09:23] CarynTopia Silvercloud: I am experiencing that with my board
[09:23] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: my concern is, how do we bridge that gap?
[09:23] CarmenLittleFawn: yes
[09:23] bulaklak: I remember my early experience with trying to buy new clothes and winding up wearing a giant box. I was ready to quit forever.
[09:24] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: The same way that SL people are forgiving of the learning curve, forgiving of the time it takes…
[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: or worse, accidently flashing your colleagues and experiencing virtual shame and humilation
[09:24] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we go a bit overboard. we forgive what is unforgivable to casual users… the ones who otherwise could really benefit from an experience here!
[09:25] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so i’ll give a case study
[09:25] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: Machinimart has been successful in bringing “RL people” (for lack of a better term) into SL for learning experiences
[09:25] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: in many cases.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: get them in, up and running, in 10 minutes, all the benefits, none of the frustrations…
[09:26] Hour Destiny: It’s usually easier to forgive what you understand better.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, that’s right.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the bottom line is, we know the benefits. so it’s all worth it to us to work through.
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but there has to be a middle ground right?
[09:26] CarmenLittleFawn: yes
[09:26] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: what if we could cut the frustrations?
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: get people straight in, and yes, demand that they learn some new skills, but really reduce the demand on them… and show the benefits.
[09:27] Hour Destiny: Put the Lindens in a dunking booth?
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hehe
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: by the way
[09:27] CarynTopia Silvercloud: that would be great!
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes, the Lindens are the elephant in the room.
[09:27] Ricken Flow: you would have the find the lindens first lol
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: occasionally they make a major move that really improves useability.
[09:27] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: more often than not, they miss the mark.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they’re not 100% guilty.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: again, “SL people” tend to be forgiving of the bugs, the frustrations…
[09:28] Hour Destiny: They are certainly guilty of very lousy customer service.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: which sends the wrong message to LL. so they skimp.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and yes, Hour, they try but mostly fail at customer service.
[09:28] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i just accept this reality as it is.
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: sometimes they REALLY try
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: mostly it seems like they don’t… but it is what it is.
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so how do we make it work?
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hello Betsy, speak of the devil 😀
[09:29] Carl Solutionary: speak of the Lindens… wow! great timing Betsy!
[09:29] Betsy Linden: 🙂
[09:29] Hour Destiny: 1.5+ years and counting and no response to a paying customer is unacceptable.
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: hehe
[09:29] Glitteractica Cookie: I just TPd a Linden in
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니:    o/
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니:      ||   Yay!
[09:29] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니:     /
[09:29] Glitteractica Cookie: Betsy has offered to speak at a future meeting
[09:30] Glitteractica Cookie: but she’s not the guest today
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so I will take one case of how we were able to make this work with high school students
[09:30] Glitteractica Cookie: I just wanted to give her asense of how we run meting
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: how we succeeded, and how we failed.
[09:30] Betsy Linden: glad to be here , ty
[09:30] CarmenLittleFawn: Hello 🙂 Betsy
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i felt I had a good grasp on how they would react and behave in the environment.
[09:30] Hour Destiny: Hello, Betsy.
[09:30] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we even created a custom viewer
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: with only the functions they needed.
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: This was a well-funded project.
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: good people working on it!
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and we felt we took every concern into consideration.
[09:31] Glitteractica Cookie: who was the project for?
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: had a welcome area (we have registration API)
[09:31] Ricken Flow: ( i think i worked on that project with Gabe on the teen grid
[09:31] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: oh, by the way, unfortunately, I’m under NDA for all my projects
[09:32] Glitteractica Cookie: oh ok, np
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and yeah, Ricken, I worked on the old teen grid, so we might have worked together lol
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so we had this great program, a custom viewer, the students could use it.
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: thought we took everything into consideration
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: a set of activities broken up by unit
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: lessones
[09:32] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: *lessons
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so one lesson was a puzzle.
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: an educator designed it, not familiar with SL, and we implemented it.
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: for the puzzle, the students need to find objects in a room.
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you get a hint
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: “find an object that does this…. “
[09:33] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you click on the object
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: if you get the right one, you have to find the next one…
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: until you find them all.
[09:34] Hour Destiny: Hidden object puzzle.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes!
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i thought it was a great idea.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i’ve played games like that
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: kids are familiar with them
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: it’s fun.
[09:34] Hour Destiny: I have a bunch of those on my iPhone.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes. i’ve played iphone games with that also.
[09:34] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so we scripted it
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and before the students come to play it, we test it, of course.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you have to test it
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we TPed people in to test….
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i tested it
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we had at least 12 people test it, say “yeah!” thumbs up, it works.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so the day comes, the students come in… and it breaks.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: I have no idea what’s going on.
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: all the students are complaining
[09:35] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they’re frustrated
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they’re doing the right thing.
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: when you’re doing the right thing, and you’re told it’s wrong, it can be infuriating.
[09:36] Jen: Murphy’s Law
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: yes
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and this project went so well up to now!
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the teachers are not happy
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: which is to say nothing of the funders.
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: now, I will show you a picture.
[09:36] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: one moment…
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8005/7419354548_6de70624d9_b.jpg
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: this is the students, in the room
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: looking for objects
[09:37] jacmacaire Humby: Sorry I have to go.. To all a very nice week-end.. 🙂
[09:37] Chayenn: bye jac
[09:37] CarmenLittleFawn: u also Jac bye
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: by jac, thanx 😀
[09:37] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: does anyone notice anything about the picture?
[09:38] jacmacaire Humby: Bye everyone..
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i was there, by the way… only in retrospect do I realize the problem.
[09:38] Carl Solutionary: looks laggy… and I bet the objects are getting clicked alot
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i was watching this happen…
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: YES
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: objects clicked a lot.
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: why?
[09:38] Hour Destiny: What if more than one person clicks on the same object?
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: because people are used to instant feedback.
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: instantaneous gratification.
[09:38] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: whereas people who are used to SL are accustomed to clicking, waiting…
[09:39] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: you click… and then… wait for it… wait for it… there it is!
[09:39] Hour Destiny: And if someone sees someone else clicking on something, they’ll click it too. Follow The Leader type of thing.
[09:39] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: these people did great in our environment, until this challenge. where they had to wait 2 (gasp!) or more seconds for a response
[09:39] Buffy Beale: lol
[09:39] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: 5 seconds is a LOT for casual users
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: think how many people have dropped SL altogether in less than 5 seconds!
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but we are all used to the wait.
[09:40] Hour Destiny: ~8 seconds for webpages.
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i’m using an example of where I failed to anticipate the behavior of RL students to illutrate our challenge
[09:40] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: now, really, the issue here was not just the wait… it was the fact that they POUNDED
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: these objects with clicks
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: each one causing more lag
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: and also resetting the game!

[09:41] Hour Destiny: DDOS attack. 😀

[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: the way we scripted it, you click an object, and ok, you clicked it… click again, and it’s the wrong object…
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i click “broom”, it expects me to click “bucket” next
[09:41] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: but
[09:42] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: i click “broom” 5 times… it resets the game for me five times.
[09:42] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: this is the gap between casual users (the people we want to reach with our good work) and those who are familiar with SL
[09:42] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: everything you know, everything you did to customize your avatar and to build your beautiful office here in this sim…
[09:43] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: is beyond the reach of average people… yet they have so much to benefit could they get just 20 minutes of learning here!

[09:43] Carl Solutionary: I’m wondering if this approach would work: touch_start() { llSay(0,”Congratulations! You have instant gratification…Please WAIT 5 seconds for your PRIZE to arrive! And next hint!” }

[09:44] Hour Destiny: Heh.

[09:44] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: it could… but guess what… people don’t pay attention to notifications!
[09:44] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: they just don’t.

[09:44] Ricken Flow: even before that i had some people that never been into a virtual world and was exciting about the project then they seen the size of the viewer and wouldnt download it said it was too big of a file for the computer
[09:44] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: we’re “trained” to out of habit, but there are so many challenges… we’re familiar with it. we can’t expect others to be.
[09:45] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: so, i hope this got you thinking… we need to design experiences for people without expecting them to go through what we’ve gone through.
[09:45] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: because, bluntly, they won’t.
Open Mic / Announcements

[09:46] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, so we need to move into open Mic announceents now, any closing remarks?

[09:46] bulaklak: Yes, all great stuff! And potentially also raising the bar for everyone’s expectations, too, not just newbies.

[09:46] Jen: raises hand

[09:46] Hour Destiny: Poor education/learning, poor critical thinking skills, lack of experience/knowledge, unrealistic expectations, and likely an entitlement philosophy, etc.

[09:46] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, thanks Gabe! Find him on twitter at @machinimart
[09:47] Glitteractica Cookie: OK, then we are ready for announcements to the larger group!

[09:47] Gᵃᵇᵉ 게이브루니: ty 🙂

About Gabe:
Gabe Salgado is Producer at Machinimart, a machinima and virtual world production studio currently based in South Korea. Although his training is in web development and motion graphics editing, he spent 6 years working in education before joining his first virtual world venture. As an educator, he created a series of acclaimed multimedia cultural programs, including “The Sticker Song Curriculum”—the first Jewish curriculum to go viral. He has been involved in virtual world technology since 2007 and has also developed many highly acclaimed programs on the Second Life Teen Grid, reaching students in schools and educational programs around the world. Although his background is multi-faceted, he has kept a single vision which has remained the same: to bring technology and education together in a way that opens up boundless opportunities for those that would otherwise remain outside of the know.
