TechSoup Announcements

[08:41] Zinnia Zauber: Let’s have our TechSoup Announcements

[08:41] Glitteractica Cookie: WHAAA??!

[08:41] bulaklak: Howdy, folks!

[08:41] Buffy Beale: yay bulaklak

[08:41] CarmenLittleFawn: Hello

[08:41] bulaklak: I hope everyone is enjoying their Fridays thus far.
[08:41] bulaklak: We’ve got a lot of great events on the horizon at TechSoup

[08:41] Nany (nany.kayo): I am!

[08:42] bulaklak: But first I wanted to let you all know that the end
of our fiscal year is coming up at the end of this month

[08:42] Hour Destiny: Does TechSoup order from TechSoup? 😀

[08:42] bulaklak: What does that mean? It means that if you haven’t
yet maxed out your 2011 allotment of TechSoup donations, there is
still time!
[08:43] bulaklak: Many of our donor partners hit the reset button on
July 1, so request before then to make sure you are getting everything
you are entitled to for this year.
[08:43] bulaklak: (And then start requesting again on July 1. Hehe.)
[08:44] bulaklak: Hour, we don’t actually. We do get a certain
allotment of software from our donor partners but it’s not through the
donation program.
[08:44] bulaklak: At any rate, there is a lot more info on fiscal year end here
[08:45] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LgnFqX
[08:45] bulaklak: Okie doke on to events.
[08:45] bulaklak: Next week, we are co-producing a webinar with the
folks from Eventbrite and Social Media for Nonprofits
[08:45] bulaklak: You will be able to learn how to use social media to
get the most out of your events
[08:46] bulaklak: Join us on June 20 for that one, at 11am Pacific.
Register here: http://bit.ly/MCmeSC
[08:47] bulaklak: The following day, June 21, we are having a
cross-timezone tweet chat on the topic of data. More and more it’s
becoming apparent how crucial it is that we as social benefit orgs are
getting our data out there in front of decision makers
[08:47] bulaklak: This tweet chat will talk about how you can use your
org’s data to become part of that conversation
[08:47] bulaklak: This blog explains more, as well as how to join a
tweet chat in case that’s new to you
[08:48] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/LXmJnq
[08:48] Hour Destiny: “Dashboard Your Data” could be the name of it.
[08:48] bulaklak: The hashtag is #npdata and we’ll be convening at 10am Pacific
[08:48] bulaklak: That’s a great idea, Hour. We are usually not so
creative with titles at TechSoup. We’re kinda straightforward. But I
love your suggestion.
[08:48] bulaklak: Okay folks, that’s all I’ve got for today!

[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: good stuff

[08:48] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!

[08:48] bulaklak: Thank you for listening and enjoy the rest of the meeting.

[08:49] CarmenLittleFawn: ty

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: Glitter, you wanted to share as well, please.

[08:49] bulaklak: Oh!

[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: Sure

[08:49] bulaklak: Sorry I had one last announcement

[08:49] bulaklak: But I can wait

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: You guys arm wrestle for it.

[08:49] bulaklak: LOL

[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: I just wanted to say, first of all,
athat we are all happy to have Zinnia on board as our interim
community manager, as much as we miss Rik
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: (Bulaklak, just a sec)

[08:50] Chayenn: yes we are

[08:50] bulaklak: Yay, Zinnia!

[08:50] Chayenn: thank u zinnia

[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: and we have a few opportuntiies to build
on past systems that may need we re-examining

[08:50] trichetriche: welcome

[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: so, for example, the NPC group versus
the TechSoup inworld group

[08:50] CarmenLittleFawn: congrats Zinnia

[08:51] Brena Benoir: Woot Zinnia!

[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: we have two groups, one for the
community and the other (the nonprofitcommons group) is for “resident”
members who have offices
[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: the techsoup group is for the larger community

[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[08:51] Glitteractica Cookie: we can re-examine if this arrnagement
still makes sense, but I wanted to at least clarify how it is
currently
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: so you all can know that the Nonprofit
commons group is supposed to be for resident information, and
informataion pertaining to more involved members and mentors, etc
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: the techsoup group was originally
intended for larger community stuff
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: i would be interested in conflating
these if that were possible and made sense
[08:52] Glitteractica Cookie: And Zinnia and I will discuss this

[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: but for now, let’s just keep that in
mind, so we all know what the community is behind each group
[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: That’s all for me

[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Glitter!

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: Bulaklak… you were starting to say?
[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: (you’re welcome)

[08:53] bulaklak: Yes, I would like to welcome our newest team member
trichetriche

[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: oh yes

[08:53] bulaklak: This is her first time inworld today

[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: woo hoo welcome trichtriche

[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: Welcome!

[08:54] alebez: wahooo! trichetriche

[08:54] CarmenLittleFawn: hello trichetriche welcome

[08:54] Panny Bakerly: Hi ya!

[08:54] trichetriche: Thanks you! Everyone has been so sweet. Very cool

[08:54] jacmacaire Humby: welcome.. 🙂

[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: can yo ucome down to the front, so folks
can see you?

[08:54] Serene Jewell: Hi tri

[08:54] bulaklak: I believe she is having some rezzing issues (not
uncommon at first, I remember how awkward it was for me at first!) so
please give her a warm welcome

[08:54] Buffy Beale: yayy trichetriche

[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: Sally S. Cherry, Baltimore, MD

[08:54] trichetriche: I’m struggling a bit with my avatar
[08:54] trichetriche: 🙁

[08:54] Hour Destiny: Hello, trichetriche. I’m a Morris of all trades.

[08:54] bulaklak: We’ll work with you on that!

[08:54] Glitteractica Cookie: if you right click on stool next to
bulaklak you can sit there

[08:54] trichetriche: once I get the hang of it I’ll get on over there

[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: We all understand and are here to help!

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: just right click on that stool and select sit here

[08:55] trichetriche: I’m also having graphic issues

[08:55] bulaklak: I think maybe she can’t see the stools right now, just water

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: ah, it happens

[08:55] trichetriche: so I’m not able to see them

[08:55] Serene Jewell: We’ve all been through it.

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: oh, ok no prob

[08:55] bulaklak: At any rate, trichetriche if you want to give a
brief description of your work at TechSoup

[08:55] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, we’ve all been there

[08:56] trichetriche: Sure, I don’t want to be disruptive so I’m happy
to wait till the end

[08:57] bulaklak: Okay we can wait and do that during the
announcements so you can tell everyone about the stories you are
gathering.
[08:57] bulaklak: Moving on for now . . .
[08:57] bulaklak: Oops I meant open mic

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: We look forward to learning more!

[08:57] bulaklak: Anyway, take it away Zinnia

[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!

Mentor Central and Intellectual Property Respect – A Virtual Artist’s Perspective with Zinnia Zauber / Renne Emiko Brock-Richmond of Sequim Humanities and Arts Alliance

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: The good news is that Mentors Central blends in
with my talk today.

[08:58] Sarvana Haalan: woot!!

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Before I start, I want to remind everyone that
the NPC Mentors are here to help you out and we do mini lessons and
share during Mentor Central.

[08:59] Buffy Beale: cheering for youZ!

[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: So! Let’s get started!
[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Intellectual Property Respect – A Virtual
Artist’s Perspective with Zinnia Zauber
[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: You can find the slides here for later…

http://www.slideshare.net/renneemiko/intellectual-property-respect-a-vir…

[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I am an artist, instructor, and superhero
promoting the importance of creative education and community
participation in the arts that are active and inclusive.
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I teach art, computer, digital media, and
social media use through Peninsula College, as a Lecturer and
Education Mentor for the University of Washington Certificate in
Virtual Worlds Program, and conduct workshops for TechSoup’s Nonprofit
Commons on branding, marketing, event production, and social media
networking.
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I create art, apparel, and virtual goods that
embrace the empowerment of brilliant hues, individualism, and
acceptance.
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: I am thankful to get to share with you all today!

[09:02] Sarvana Haalan: Wooot…. Zinnia!!!!

[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: Disclaimer: I am an artist, instructor, and
Arts advocate, not a lawyer. The information contained in this
presentation is provided for informational purposes only, and should
not be construed as legal advice on any subject matter.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: I can be heavy handed when it comes to
Intellectual Property Respect because I have had my work stolen – at a
young age – and I used to run an artists’ resource office for the
nonprofit Artists’ Equity.

[09:02] Ethelred Weatherwax: You’re sounding like a lawye!

[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: lol Eth!
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: It is important to me and I am thankful you are
interested in learning more.
[09:02] Zinnia Zauber: Why do people not recognize the rights of
creative people?
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: It is a simple issue of lack of respect for the
professions of those who create. It is a legitimate job with results
that last long after a civilization has ended.
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Everything you interact with that is human made
has art, design, culture, and invention embedded in it. Thank you for
supporting creative expression and valuing those who create it!
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: You will find that I ask you questions along the way…
[09:03] Zinnia Zauber: Encourage the Dos and the Do Not’s through
responsible and respective behavior.
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: Lead by example.
Claiming ignorance is unacceptable.

[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: A great resource online about legal information
is http://www.nolo.com
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: Or find your local lawyer for the Arts –
http://www.law-arts.org/

[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: What do you value or earn?

Respect, Self-worth, Money
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: What do you get in return?
[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: Recognition for your accomplishments,
admiration from your peers, friendship, and cool stuff.
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Do you own your efforts?

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: How would you feel if someone stole your stuff
or your income or your reputation?

[09:05] Hour Destiny: Willful ignorance is unacceptable.

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Is that legal behavior?

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Right, Hour.

[09:05] Sarvana Haalan: It happens much too often 🙁

[09:06] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): (yes, Nolo’s great)

[09:06] Nany (nany.kayo): There is another side to this issue I hope
to bring up.

[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: You all can help. disingenuous actions are hard
for us to understand.
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: When it comes to Intellectual Property, there
is no gray area. It is black and white.

[09:06] Nany (nany.kayo): dont think so, Zinnia

[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Taking without permission is stealing.
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Arrrg! Do you know pirates?
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: People often tell me that they think because
images, writing, music, or video is on the web or in a virtual world;
it is free for them to take. Absolutely not! It is thievery unless the
creator of the work has given you permission.

[09:07] Nany (nany.kayo): Museums claim property rights to things they
did not create

[09:07] Sarvana Haalan: I prefer “written permission” before using
content both ways.

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, Nany, I think we will have to address that
issue sometime.

[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Respect, Professionalism, Integrity, and Understanding
[09:07] Zinnia Zauber: Requirements to value Intellectual Property Rights.
[09:08] Zinnia Zauber: You can not have truth without an agreement. A
handshake is an accord. Respect is value.
[09:08] Zinnia Zauber: What is intellectual property?
Ideas and creative assets become property once they can be touched,
seen, heard, and felt.

[09:08] Zinnia Zauber: When a light bulb in your head, becomes one in
your hand. So, it has to somehow escape from your brain and become a
tangible medium of expression.

[09:08] Hour Destiny: Technically, ideas cannot be intellectual property. 🙂

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: right Hour

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: Four ways to protect different types of
intellectual property:
Copyrights
Patents
 Trademarks
 Tradesecrets

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: What is a Copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution
and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a
tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and
unpublished works.

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: What is a Patent?
A patent is a grant issued by the United States government giving the
inventor the right to exclude all others from making, using, or
selling their invention. There are three kinds of patents: utility,
design, and plant.

[09:09] Zinnia Zauber: What is a trademark?
A trademark is a distinctive word, phrase, symbol, or design which
identifies specific goods or services as those produced or provided by
a certain person or enterprise.

[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: What is a Trade Secret?
A trade secret can be any formula, compilation of information,
pattern, or device which benefits a business and can give an advantage
over their competitors.

[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: How are those slides rezzing for you guys?

[09:10] Ageliki Mekanic: ok

[09:10] Serene Jewell: they look good

[09:10] Hour Destiny: Anonymonity and punishments that seem excessive
seem to be two of the main reasons for piracy. Not to mention
conveinence.

[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: Super, thank you!
[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: I am going to focus on copyrights for this
presentation. I will cover what can have a copyright, how to get a
copyright, length of rights, public domain, fair use, Creative Commons

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: What types of creative work does copyright protect?
Any original “fixed in a tangible medium of expression” which means
that the work must exist in some kind of physical form for at least
some period of time. That includes any recorded media or your
computer’s random access memory (RAM).

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: Some examples include: Artistic – architectural
designs, digital media, graphic designs, paintings, photographs,
sculptures
[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: Literary – educational materials, novels, plays, poetry…
Performances – choreography, music, sheet music, sounds… Recorded
media – games, movies, music, software, videos…

[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: Are creative ideas protected?
[09:11] Zinnia Zauber: No.
Once a creative idea becomes tangible, then it can be protected.

[09:11] Hour Destiny: Emails…

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: yes, Hour – emails and they are legal docs…

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: The copyright is a legal device that provides
the creator the rights to control how their protected work is used.
Those rights involve the reproduction right, distribution right,
performance and display rights, and the right to create adaptations
(or derivative works).

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: How do I copyright my work?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and
fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or
with the aid of a machine or device.
[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: You have the © (copyright) once you make the
idea actual. Once it is tangible.

[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: Why would I register my copyright?
To protect your works and if you needed to take legal action.

[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: How do I register copyright of my work?
http://www.copyright.gov/
[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: $35 – Online registration of a basic claim in
an original work of authorship (electronic filing)
Lots more services and forms there…

[09:13] Zinnia Zauber: A valid copyright notice should contain:

the word “copyright”

a “c” in a circle ©

the date of publication

the name of either the author or owner of the copyright rights in the
published work.
[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: Remember, once you create something – it has a copyright.

[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: How long does a copyright last?
For works published after 1977, the copyright lasts for the life of
the author plus 70 years.
Works published after 1922 but before 1978 are protected for 95 years
from the date of publication.
[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: All works published in the United States before
1923 are in the public domain.

[09:14] Zinnia Zauber: What is the public domain?
It refers to creative materials that are not protected by intellectual
property laws such as copyright, trademark, or patent laws.
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: You should presume that every work is protected
by copyright unless you can establish that it is not. Just because you
don’t see a ©, you know it has a copyright if it is created after
1977.

[09:15] Hour Destiny: Don’t forget Fair Use rights.

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: Do your research and remember copyrights can be renewed.
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: I will cover that!
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: This disrespectful statement pisses me off,
have you heard it?
“I rather beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.”
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: That is disingenuous laziness and illegal behavior.
“Cuff him, Dano!”

[09:15] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Can be expensive too

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: yes!

[09:16] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Do you feel like you are restricted by these
copyrights to protect the creators?
[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Maybe you want to make something in a virtual
world, don’t have the ability to make original works of your own. You
have options.
[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: You understand the rights creators have over
their works, so how can you use their work to create your own?

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Respect creators’ rights and discover how you
can create as well.
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Take a class and learn to make it yourself!
It is easier than ever to create unique works yourself!
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: If you know how to use your phone camera, BAM!
You have a means to create amazing textures that you can bring
inworld.
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: No one needs to know that stunning sofa in your
office started out as a close up of your favorite polar fleece. Or,
was it some pound cake?

[09:17] Hour Destiny: As I sit here with an Optimus Prime avatar…

[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: hehe, right…

[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Support creators…
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Buy works that you have the license to use.
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: When you buy a piece of art, like a painting,
you do not have any reproduction rights. That is the right to make
copies of a protected work.
You only have the right to hang it on your wall.
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: The artist owns the reproduction rights while
you own the painting.
Unless it is stated in the sales contract that the purchase includes
the reproduction rights. Don’t assume anything, contact the artist for
answers.
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Always ask!
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: Most people don’t understand these rules.
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Some artists don’t know their rights either.
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Licensed works will have terms of service in
writing that explains permitted use of the work and details
stipulations. Creators may want to maintain the integrity of their
works and express restrictions.

[09:19] Sarvana Haalan: It’s hard to get folks to understand the rules. 🙁

[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, but that is why we are discussing it. To help them!
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: A good example of that in virtual worlds are
textures. The creator of a texture might state do not resell or
distribute these as textures. Resell only as part of a build. So you
have bought a license to use the textures, not sell the textures on
their own.
[09:19] Zinnia Zauber: Read the fine print…
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: ask the creator…
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Creative Commons license, let’s the creator
keep their copyright, but gives a way to let people use, copy, and
distribute works.
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Do you guys know about the Creative Commons?

[09:20] CarmenLittleFawn: no

[09:20] Zotarah Shepherd nods

[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Later, check out…
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: This is a great video explaining what the
Creative Commons offers…
https://creativecommons.org/videos/get-creative

[09:21] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yes

[09:21] CarmenLittleFawn: ty

[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: I am going to try to get a speaker to discuss
that for us someday.
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: CC instead of c
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Different licenses include: Attribution,
Attribution-ShareAlike, Attribution-NoDerivs,
Attribution-NonCommercial, Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, and
Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs.
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Fair Uses – a limitation and exception to the
exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative
work.
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Violations of fair use occurs when the use of
copyrighted work is used for commercial gain.

[09:22] Glitteractica Cookie: I can help you get a speaker to talk to that

[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Glitter

[09:22] Nany (nany.kayo): Good idea

[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: Uses That Are Generally Fair Uses:
Nonprofit educational uses
Research and scholarship
News reporting
Criticism and comment
Parody
Non-commercial use is often fair use.
Benefit to the public may be fair use.
[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: How’s that Hour?

[09:22] Ozma Malibu: We used Creative Commons works for the Helios
science classes, Z. That’s where I found the images for the
instruction for physics etc.

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Super, then we really should line that up!
[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: I see this violation all the time at craft
fairs when vendors are selling items that contain licensed characters
– like Disney characters.
[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: They will by fabric with those characters and
it states clearly in the selvage (the edge of the fabric) “This
product intended for non-commercial home use only.”

[09:23] Hour Destiny: What about books in audio format? What if
someone is blind and needs an audio format?

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: That means that whatever is made out of the
fabric isn’t licensed for resale. So, the maker of the potholder is
violating the rights of the fabric creator if they sell the potholder.

[09:23] Glitteractica Cookie: TechSoup is published under creative commons

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Needless to say, people break the laws. So, I
encourage folks at the craft fairs to educate themselves.

[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Good question on the audio… I think more and
more talks are coming up!

[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: here is an oldie but goodie article from
TechSoup 2008 about creative commons: what it is, how to use it:
http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page4817.cfm

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: I get asked this all the time, “If I change
something enough, like with Photoshop, can I use it for myself without
the permission of the creator?” I always picture in my head
Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam “ on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
My answer is, “If you are creative enough, make something new
yourself.”
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, Glitter!

[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: no prob

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Derivative or “derivative work” is defined as
work based on one or more preexisting works that are transformed or
adapted.

[09:24] Hour Destiny: 30% changes.

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Nearly everything is a derivative of something.
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Transformativeness – work must sufficiently
transforms the expression of the original work that the new work is no
longer “substantially similar” and does not infringe the copyright in
the original.
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: So, we know we can make changes…
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: and make it our own
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: but, I like people really making things on their own.
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: I get to teach more classes that way!
[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: lol

[09:25] CarmenLittleFawn: love it

[09:25] Zinnia Zauber: Virtual Rights are Real Rights

Content in Second Life is any works of creative authorship that
includes text, scripts, applications, programs, gestures, animations,
video, music, sounds, images, photos, textures, graphic design,
primitives, and objects.

[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: Everything here is ART!
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: right?
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: we are all pieces of work
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: some more than others
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: 😉

[09:26] CarmenLittleFawn: lol

[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: Appreciate your own significance.
If you license your work, you retain legal ownership of the work
(copyright) while someone else can produce, duplicate your imagery on
merchandise, and sell your item.
[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Depending on the written contract, when you
grant the license, you can receive a royalty. That is an ongoing
payment based upon a percentage of the income from the licensed work.
[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you here create in SL?

[09:27] Zotarah Shepherd: I do

[09:27] CarmenLittleFawn: I am going to

[09:27] jacmacaire Humby: not fool 🙂

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Don’t be shy!

[09:27] Brena Benoir: I have before

[09:27] Buffy Beale: I do

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: Super!

[09:28] CarynTopia Silvercloud: I am trying to learn how

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: wonderful!

[09:28] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Raises Hand

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: Great!

[09:28] Serene Jewell: yes

[09:28] Hour Destiny: I wish content owners overall were more open to
alternative expressions.

[09:28] CarmenLittleFawn: I also have a copyright, but have learned a
lot more about it here today from you

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: Then, you know how important it is to protect
your efforts.

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: Second Life / Linden Lab Terms of Service
Content Licenses and Intellectual Property Rights

[09:29] Dancers Yao: yes

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: thank you Carmen!

[09:29] Ozma Malibu: Zinnia you are good at raising awareness and
ENTHUSIASM! I want to go out and take photos right now! I just need to
think of a project to put them in. 🙂

[09:29] Nany (nany.kayo): everybody is welcome to steal anything I create here.

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: You retain any and all Intellectual Property
Rights in Content you upload, publish, or create in Second Life.
You grant certain Content licenses to Linden Lab and users of Second
Life by submitting your Content to publicly accessible areas.

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: lol Nany

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: If you violate other’s Intellectual Property
Rights, your access to Second Life will be terminated.

http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php#tos7
[09:29] Zinnia Zauber:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Intellectual_Property

[09:29] Nany (nany.kayo): It’s true. Ask me and I will give you a copy
of anything I make, full perms

[09:29] Sarvana Haalan: you are saying that we as content creators
need to copyright our creations?

[09:30] Sarvana Haalan: what about photos?

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: the moment you make it, it has a copyright.

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: Linden Lab Official: Snapshot and machinima policy
[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: If you wish to take a snapshot or capture
machinima of content on another Resident’s land, then you need the
Land Owner Consent. Check the Land’s covenant for details.

[09:30] CarmenLittleFawn: oh ok

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: On the Mainland or Linden owned land, you can
take snapshots without permission, but you do need it to capture
machinima.
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Ask permission of each avatar too.

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Snapshot_and_machini…

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: So, that can be overwhelming… I know!
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Ask Permission and give credit!
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: I did a machinima of artists friends in Second
Life and requested permission to film the artist and their works.
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: When I do presentations to promote Second Life,
I ask permission to use photos of them.
[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: I also created my own artwork based on an
avatar with that avatar’s permission.
Thank you to Filthy Fluno!

[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is
a United States copyright law that criminalizes production and
dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to
circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works.

[09:32] Zotarah Shepherd: (He is one of SLs great artists)

[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: If you discover your work is being distributed
online or inworld without your permission, file a DMCA notice with the
provider.

[09:33] Hour Destiny: Poor Drextor Despres.

[09:34] Buffy Beale: this was just great Z, thank you!

[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: Okay! That was a lot of text and info!
[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!

[09:34] Zotarah Shepherd: Thank you Z

[09:34] CarmenLittleFawn: very informative and important Thank you so much 🙂

[09:34] trichetriche: Thanks

[09:34] Glitteractica Cookie: thanks zinnia

[09:34] Adrianne Lexico: Excellent presentation!!! THANKS, Z!!!

[09:34] Dancers Yao: excellent,,,than you so important

[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: So, I wanted to give us a chance to discuss… as well.

[09:34] bulaklak: Thank you, Zinnia! Great knowledge and advice.

[09:35] Brena Benoir: Woot Zinnia. Thank you for sharing and educating
us on topics that impact us everyday.

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, this is very important to me.

[09:35] Ageliki Mekanic: Thank you! Great!

[09:35] Serene Jewell: Thanks so much for doing this, Zinnia.

[09:35] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Excellent presentation

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: So, let me ask you some questions…

[09:35] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Thanks Zin!

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Do you think that everything online is free for
you to take and use?

[09:35] CarmenLittleFawn: no

[09:35] Zotarah Shepherd: no

[09:36] Brena Benoir: no

[09:36] trichetriche: nope

[09:36] Jen (jenelle.levenque): NO

[09:36] bertique: i have seen a lot of pictures taken in sl on
flickr… many people protect them buy copyrights… i find it is…
stupid.. beacause sharing is caring

[09:36] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Not everything.

[09:36] Hour Destiny: Unless you get caught… 😀

[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: okay, so I see that some people want to see
more sharing…

[09:36] CarmenLittleFawn: well I like the idea of being creative

[09:36] bertique: i never protect my pics made inworld. i would be
greatful, if somebody finds my pics so good so that he or she will
repost them

[09:37] Nany (nany.kayo): agree

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: That is why the Creative Commons is for you guys!

[09:37] bertique: i am a JOOOMLA fan
[09:37] bertique: i love open source products

[09:37] trichetriche: I love Creative Commons

[09:37] bertique: i really do not understand creative commons

[09:37] Nany (nany.kayo): and if the person using those photos is not
selling them, that is fair use, isnt it?

[09:37] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): ditto.. fan of the CC

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: I think we will really have to do some talks
about that in the future!

[09:37] bertique: because it is some times tricky to understand

[09:38] Buffy Beale: Question: Z how do we license our avatars and can we?

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: yes, there are many choices there.

[09:38] Sarvana Haalan: Back… I crashed

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: You can trademark your avatar

[09:38] CarmenLittleFawn: really
[09:38] CarmenLittleFawn: how?

[09:38] Buffy Beale: wb Sar 🙂

[09:38] Zotarah Shepherd: I am fine with folks using my creations, I
would not however want them stolen from me as their own so I could not
use them.

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: Draxtor did
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: I am in the process of doing it.
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: I am doing an art project about that process.

[09:38] CarmenLittleFawn: did he?

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: yes

[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: cool
[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: I would be interested when u find out

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: He and I are discussing how we can share that
process together.

[09:39] Nany (nany.kayo): Seems petty to fret about someone using some
little bit of junk I make in SL.

[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: great 🙂

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: So, that will be another talk!!!

[09:39] Buffy Beale: that’s great and would be a good session

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: Awesome!

[09:39] Adrianne Lexico: yes, definitely

[09:39] CarmenLittleFawn: yes it would be

[09:39] Hour Destiny: A MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online game) that
is free-to-play will still infringe on IP even if it is free.

[09:39] Nany (nany.kayo): LL can easily grab it and wipe it out at any time.

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: True Nany

[09:39] Sarvana Haalan: what is you bought your avatar an dmade major
modifications, can you trademark or copyright it?

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: true
[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Well, can we agree that I will have to prepare
another talk about the avatar issues?

[09:40] CarmenLittleFawn: yes indeed

[09:40] bertique: sure

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: I did a talk about that at FCVW this year.

[09:40] Sarvana Haalan: *what if…

[09:40] Buffy Beale: I’d like to know about trademarking an avatar so sure

[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: It is very important stuff.

[09:40] Zotarah Shepherd: If you made the skin and shape then you
should be able to trademark your avatar. I am not quite that creative
yet.

[09:40] Sarvana Haalan: great idea

[09:41] CarmenLittleFawn: yes it is important

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, Buffy is my star when it comes to avatar branding.

[09:41] bertique: hm
[09:41] bertique: may i ask one question?

[09:41] Buffy Beale: that’s easy cause Zinnia made my skin 🙂

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: Please

[09:41] bertique: it is very important to me

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: 🙂

[09:41] Sarvana Haalan: coool!!

[09:41] bertique: what does “commercial use” means?
[09:41] Zotarah Shepherd: I’d know Buffy anywhere without seeing her tag

[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: That means to earn income from.

[09:41] trichetriche: buying and selling

[09:41] Adrianne Lexico: seems like we have another talk ahead, Zinnia!

[09:41] bertique: if i create a website and use it privatly, it is
not.. ok, but if i place some ads there?

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: hehehee

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: So, like if music is playing in a store…

[09:42] Buffy Beale: 🙂 worn this outfit since I started

[09:42] Adrianne Lexico: you have to tell us more about trademarking avatars! 🙂

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: that is also commercial use

[09:42] Zotarah Shepherd: I know : )

[09:42] bertique: :((

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: and people have to pay to play

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: yes u have Buffy 🙂

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: yes they do Zinnia

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: I am so excited you guys are interested in more!

[09:42] Adrianne Lexico: we always are!

[09:42] Adrianne Lexico: :

[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: yay!

[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: I am 🙂

[09:42] HB Eternal: and yes, Buffy washes her outfit regularly

[09:42] bertique: it’s a great topic

[09:42] Buffy Beale: not easy running around as a little green fairy I
can tell you that lol

[09:43] Adrianne Lexico: lol

[09:43] CarmenLittleFawn: heheheeh

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: But, I want to be sure we get a chance to
handle our whole agenda

[09:43] Buffy Beale: with all the gorgeous others here
[09:43] Buffy Beale: lol HB, at least weekly

[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: so how about you guys share with me more topics
you would like covered.
[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: and we will work on that!
[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for this chance to share with you and
the slides are here
[09:44] Zinnia Zauber:
http://www.slideshare.net/renneemiko/intellectual-property-respect-a-vir…

[09:44] Adrianne Lexico: sure.

[09:44] Hour Destiny: 3d game development. 😀

[09:44] Zotarah Shepherd: Identity theft too

[09:44] Buffy Beale: I’d like to hear from some of the NGOs here, mini
presentations on the org

[09:44] Adrianne Lexico: fair use in education

[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: Super ideas!!!

[09:44] CarmenLittleFawn: yes 🙂

[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: Keep them coming and email too at renneemiko(AT)gmail(DOT)com
[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: Okay!

[09:44] CarmenLittleFawn: ok

[09:44] Zinnia Zauber: Open Mic / Announcements
[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: Who has some?

[09:45] Adrianne Lexico: seems like the law is sometimes different
depending where you live.

[09:45] Glitteractica Cookie: I like Buffy’s idea, esp if those
stories refer to uses of tech by the org. Good for the pruposes of
trichetriche too

[09:45] Adrianne Lexico: thank you, Zinnia!

[09:45] Buffy Beale: Z a tip… use renneemiko[at]gmail[dot]com and
you’ll avoid the trollers 🙂

[09:45] trichetriche: Thanks everyone for being so welcoming

[09:45] Adrianne Lexico: thank you all.

[09:45] Buffy Beale: x out your email addy before posting to the web

[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: You are more than welcome! It is my passion to
educate and encourage!
[09:45] Zinnia Zauber: thank you, Buffy

[09:46] Sarvana Haalan: Excellent presentation… How are Nonprofits
members using the 3D technology other than their NPC office and
meetings?

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Trolls love me

[09:46] Adrianne Lexico: need to leave now. goodbye! bye Nanny
[09:46] Hour Destiny: Would like a way for nonprofits to more easily
bring their staff up to update on various issues including IP.

[09:46] Buffy Beale: bye Adrianne

[09:46] Nany (nany.kayo): bye, Adrianne!

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Great

[09:46] Adrianne Lexico: goodbye

[09:46] CarmenLittleFawn: bye Adrianne

[09:46] Adrianne Lexico: from rainy Buenos Aires, Argentina

[09:46] Zinnia Zauber: Does any one have Open Mic items?

[09:46] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you again Zinnia for a great presentation

[09:46] Sarvana Haalan: I do

[09:46] trichetriche: I do

[09:46] Buffy Beale: Z can we talk about the SLB NPC display?

[09:47] bertique: thanks a lot

[09:47] Sarvana Haalan: I do

[09:47] Buffy Beale: Second Life birthday display

[09:47] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, Sar
[09:47] Zinnia Zauber: go for it

[09:47] Sarvana Haalan: Much to my delight a local colleague write
about my presentation, “Capabitility through 3D Virtual Worlds” at the
Tech and Social Change Meetup in Baltimore, MD USA last month. She
include the provided information and links to TechSoup and the
Nonprofit Commons. Her article was linked on her Facebook page.
http://www.bilou.info/blog/theres-a-whole-other-world-out-there

[09:47] Buffy Beale: wow that’s great Sar!

[09:47] trichetriche: congratulations

[09:48] CarmenLittleFawn: nice 🙂

[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: Wonderful!

[09:48] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): yes, congrats

[09:48] Sarvana Haalan: did that transmit?

[09:48] CarmenLittleFawn: yes

[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: yes
[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!
[09:48] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, trichetriche…

[09:49] trichetriche: Thank you
[09:49] trichetriche: TechSoup has an exciting new initiative in
partnership with Microsoft called the Local Impact Map, and we will
love for you to be a part of it. We want to showcase the amazing work
nonprofits and NGO’s are doing with donated technology; we are looking
for stories from nonprofits around the world who have benefited from
TechSoup’s technology donations and resources. If you have a story to
share or know any other nonprofits who do email:
ImpactMap@techsoupglobal.org, and if you have any questions or want to
learn more email me bea@techsoupglobal.org
[09:49] trichetriche: Please take a moment and explore the map to see
how organizations are showcased
www.techsoupglobal.org/local-impact-map
[09:50] trichetriche: I look forward to hearing from you and hope we
can work so that other people around the world can see the great work
you do. 🙂

[09:50] Zinnia Zauber: Super!

[09:50] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you 🙂

[09:50] trichetriche: I’m also going to be asking for help and
patience while I familiarize myself with SL. 🙂

[09:50] CarmenLittleFawn: 🙂

[09:50] Zinnia Zauber: Have you seen my slides on starting in SL trichetriche?

[09:51] trichetriche: not yet

[09:51] Zinnia Zauber: I’ll get that to you!

[09:51] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, Buffy
[09:51] Zinnia Zauber: SL9B

[09:51] trichetriche: Thank you! and again email me your stories
bea@techsoupglobal.org

[09:51] Buffy Beale: that’s great trichetriche, since the office space
is donated by TechSoup we all should have a story 🙂
[09:51] Buffy Beale: the Nonprofit Commons space 🙂

[09:52] Glitteractica Cookie: Hey Sarvana, I’m just looking over this
great article, but there are a few corrections we’d like to make, for
ex, you don’t need to be a 501c3 to have a space here. And I’d like to
share a senstence or two about how to get technology products from
techsoup. in http://www.bilou.info/blog/theres-a-whole-other-world-out-there
can you connect community@techsoup.org with the author, and so we can
guide her a tad?

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: sorry, trichetriche
[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: Did you have more?

[09:52] trichetriche: nope that is all
[09:52] trichetriche: thank you

[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: super
[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: thank you
[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: Buffy, yes

[09:52] Buffy Beale: ok Z

[09:02] Fire Centaur: my name is Paul preibisch

[09:02] Tuty Inkpen: Since you’re Fire sounds like you can take the heat. lol

[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: me

[09:05] Rhiannon Chatnoir raises hand

[09:05] Lotta Flux raises hand

[09:05] JerryBuchko: yes vaguely

[09:05] JerryBuchko: understand that it’s an LMS

[09:05] Ozma Malibu: yes

[09:05] Fire Centaur: ok this is great

[09:05] Buffy Beale: I am

[09:06] Fire Centaur: looks like we have a few people

[09:06] Jenelle Levenque: I have no clue

[09:06] Fire Centaur: well… very quickly,

[09:06] Glitteractica Cookie: i know moodle

[09:06] Fire Centaur: MOODLE is a software you can install on your webserver,
[09:06] Fire Centaur: that once installed, is a teacher / student website
[09:06] Fire Centaur: (Learning Management System)
[09:06] Fire Centaur: where teachers can assign logins for their students
[09:07] Fire Centaur: or students can sign into
[09:07] Fire Centaur: and then particpate in online activituies
[09:07] Fire Centaur: like chat rooms
[09:07] Fire Centaur: group forums
[09:07] Fire Centaur: quizes
[09:07] Fire Centaur: assignements
[09:07] Fire Centaur: submit online papers
[09:07] Fire Centaur: etc
[09:07] Fire Centaur: since it is an LMS
[09:07] Fire Centaur: every activity is linked to the grade book

[09:07] Tuty Inkpen: so similar to ning but it’s on your own server
[09:07] Fire Centaur: so a teacher can assign grades etc

[09:07] Fire Centaur: yes

[09:08] Jenelle Levenque: We had something like that at college

[09:08] Tuty Inkpen: (I am a homeschool educator, so this could be useful for us. Definitely want to know more.)

[09:09] Ozma Malibu: The gradebook part is important for the teacher to organize the classroom.

[09:09] Fire Centaur: MOODLE is opensource

[09:09] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yay!

[09:09] Tuty Inkpen: sweet!

[09:10] Fire Centaur: meaning it is completely free
[09:10] Fire Centaur: and many programmers can commit new features to it
[09:10] Fire Centaur: so the whole community beneift
[09:10] Fire Centaur: its licensed under GPL3

[09:10] Ethelred Weatherwax: I disagree. I dislike “open source” because it means you need a certain level of technical skill. And usually your own server

[09:10] Fire Centaur: as is SLOODLE
[09:11] Fire Centaur: MOODLE has a core philosophy

[09:11] Creech Antwerp: I am a fan of open source

[09:11] Fire Centaur: which you can read about here; http://docs.moodle.org/en/Pedagogy

[09:11] In Kenzo: Many open source technologies do not require your own server and can be very easy to use.

[09:11] Fire Centaur: briefly, it is:
[09:12] Fire Centaur: All of us are potential teachers as well as learners – in a true collaborative environment
we are both.

[09:12] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Ethelred, there are some hosting companies, like DreamHost, that have one click installs of common open source software, such as Moodle, to make it easy to set up a base install

[09:12] Fire Centaur: 2) We learn particularly well from the act of creating or expressing something for others to
See.
[09:12] Fire Centaur: 3) We learn a lot by just observing the activity of our peers.

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: Fire, if you turn on your Nonprofit Commons Group Tag, then you can Rez your slideshow.

[09:12] Fire Centaur: thanks zinnia

[09:12] Creech Antwerp: Eth – you can also fairly easily get volunteers who can help you with setup.

[09:12] Tuty Inkpen: I use hostgator and think they may have moodle on quick install … will look into it

[09:12] Zinnia Zauber: You are welcome, we want to see your goods!

[09:13] Ozma Malibu: Educators like Moodle because it’s less commercial, Ethelred, not just to make money but designed for good pedagogy, and more fun to use than other LMSs.

[09:14] Fire Centaur: im sorry, I think I must relog –

[09:14] Tuty Inkpen: Yes, as a home educator, non-commercial online resources are important … so many ads on most of the free sites and they are just awful and crash my older pc’s that the kids use

[09:14] Lotta Flux: wb Fire

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: Did you guys get to check out Fire’s website?
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: http://avatarclassroom.com

[09:15] Lotta Flux will after the presentation

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: It looks really cool! We get a lot of questions about SLOODLE.

[09:15] Chayenn: PY1 emailed twice avatarclassroom since they made their last presentation but no answer

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: So, I know he will be back soon to share with us.

[09:16] bulaklak: It must be such an exciting time to grow up.

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: oh, Chayenn, you can remind him.

[09:16] Chayenn: i will

[09:16] Buffy Beale: yay here’s Fire 🙂

[09:16] Lotta Flux: yay! he’s back!

[09:16] Fire Centaur: Hi again!

[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: Welcome Back Fire

[09:16] Lotta Flux: lol Buffy 🙂

[09:16] bulaklak: Welcome back, Fire.

[09:16] Fire Centaur: im real sorry everyone – its funny, sl never troubles me EXCEPT when I have a presentation
[09:16] Fire Centaur: im on a different machine now

[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Super

[09:18] Chayenn: PY1 was emailing you a few times after your last presentation in NPC concerning your chairs recording surveys
[09:18] Chayenn: but we never got any answer from you

[09:18] Fire Centaur: ok… as I was saying

[09:18] Fire Centaur: the MOODLE philosphy, there are two more points
[09:18] Fire Centaur: 4) A learning environment needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly
respond to the needs of the participants within it.

[09:18] Chayenn: We have a sim for HIV education on Jokaydiagrid and we were looking to get your advice to record our surveys

[09:19] Fire Centaur: oh great Chaen
[09:19] Fire Centaur: pls contact me about this – perhaps I can help
[09:19] Fire Centaur: so In sumary,
[09:19] Fire Centaur: All of us are potential teachers as well as learners – in a true collaborative environment
we are both.

We learn particularly well from the act of creating or expressing something for others to
See.

We learn a lot by just observing the activity of our peers.

By understanding the contexts of others, we can teach in a more transformational way
(constructivism)

A learning environment needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly
respond to the needs of the participants within it.
[09:20] Fire Centaur: so.. SLOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: is…
[09:20] Fire Centaur: The LINK
[09:20] Fire Centaur: between second life and MOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: you probably guess that
[09:20] Fire Centaur: !
[09:20] Fire Centaur: once you have MOODLE installed on yoru server
[09:20] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE is a TOOLBOX of 3d elements that connect to your MOODLE
[09:20] Fire Centaur: it is the 3D extention to your LMS
[09:20] Fire Centaur: so you can do activities in SL

[09:21] Lotta Flux: How cool is that??

[09:21] Fire Centaur: and have them communicate with your LMS

[09:21] Lotta Flux: smiles

[09:21] Tuty Inkpen: Pretty cool

[09:21] Fire Centaur: …

[09:21] Creech Antwerp: Ok, that is really neat

[09:21] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE was started in 2007
[09:21] Fire Centaur: and was origionally pitched to the SLED mailing list
[09:21] Fire Centaur: by jeremy Kemp
[09:22] Fire Centaur: Jeremy Kabumpo from SJSU

[09:22] Creech Antwerp: Does it go in both directions?

[09:22] Fire Centaur: and also by Daniel Livingstone / Buddy Sprocket (UWS) posted the idea on Second Life
Educators mailing list
[09:22] Fire Centaur: yes it does
[09:22] Fire Centaur: creech

[09:22] Creech Antwerp: and are you using the SL API for it?

[09:22] Fire Centaur: basically, using SLOODLE

[09:22] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yay Jeremey & Daniel.. both great guys & educators

[09:22] Fire Centaur: you have a Database attached to SL, with an API
[09:22] Fire Centaur: in 2008,
[09:22] Fire Centaur: the great folks at Eduserve gave us a grant
[09:23] Fire Centaur: for funded development of the idea

[09:23] Glitteractica Cookie: Let’s hold on questions until he end, so we have time to get the key information for the group before Fire’s time runs out
[09:23] Fire Centaur: before that, good ppl were volunteering their time, like Peter Bloomfield and edmund earp

[09:23] Fire Centaur: I was hired as a full time developer in 2009
[09:23] Fire Centaur: then in 2010, i worked independently on the project while in vancouver
[09:24] Fire Centaur: and did projects with educators like Chris Surridge (Devils Island Mystery)
[09:24] Fire Centaur: and other ppl in SL
[09:24] Fire Centaur: in 2010, till present I teamed up with Edmund earp
[09:24] Fire Centaur: to continue devel
[09:24] Fire Centaur: what we found however
[09:24] Fire Centaur: was

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Fire, how can people get going on the Avatar Classroom?

[09:24] Fire Centaur: SLOODLE was REALLLY hard to install
[09:24] Fire Centaur: ok sorry for histry lesson!

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: hehe
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: We are just so excited!

[09:24] Fire Centaur: ill hurry it up
[09:25] Fire Centaur: ok so to install sloodle
[09:25] Fire Centaur: you needed abunch of skills
[09:25] Fire Centaur: install on your web server
[09:25] Fire Centaur: configuration of tools etc
[09:25] Fire Centaur: it just took too long to set up
[09:25] Fire Centaur: so…
[09:25] Fire Centaur: thats where the avatar classroom came in
[09:25] Fire Centaur: ed and I wanted to build somethign turn key
[09:25] Fire Centaur: with the avatar classroom, you sign up at http://avatarclassroom.com
[09:26] Fire Centaur: and our server automatically makes a moodle website for you
[09:26] Fire Centaur: and hosts it on our server
[09:26] Fire Centaur: as a subdomain
[09:26] Fire Centaur: etc: englishvillage.avatarclassroom.com
[09:26] Tuty Inkpen: sweet! you solved a problem. awesome.
[09:26] Fire Centaur: and automatically
[09:26] Fire Centaur: installs sloodle module
[09:26] Fire Centaur: AND configures all the tools…
[09:26] Fire Centaur: so…
[09:26] Fire Centaur: what you get in world

[09:26] Lotta Flux: wow!

[09:26] Fire Centaur: is a 3d classroom
[09:27] Fire Centaur: once you rez it

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Very cool!

[09:27] Fire Centaur: it has a control panel
[09:27] Fire Centaur: with a shared media surface
[09:27] Fire Centaur: you open it up
[09:27] Fire Centaur: and it has an iphone interface
[09:27] Fire Centaur: (we used iphone webkit)
[09:27] Fire Centaur: to set up scenes
[09:27] Fire Centaur: it comes with four scenes preloaded
[09:27] Fire Centaur: and they are automatically linked to your moodle website
[09:27] Fire Centaur: so… literally in about 5 minutes, you have a complete website with tools for
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 1) quizing
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 2) recording chat inworld
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 3) presentations
[09:28] Fire Centaur: 4) a scoreobard!
[09:28] Fire Centaur: with any currency you choose
[09:28] Fire Centaur: so you can use it for roleplaying if you like
[09:28] Fire Centaur: I made a bunch of visual documentation at avatarclassrrom.com
[09:28] Fire Centaur: everyone can sign up for free
[09:28] Fire Centaur: and try it out if you like
[09:29] Fire Centaur: ed and I are doign a 30 day trial for free, so if you want to check out if you like sloodle, you can do it, and we wont have hard feelings if you cancel on day 29
[09:29] Fire Centaur: !!!

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: Great!

[09:29] Fire Centaur: shall I rez one here?

[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: go for it

[09:29] Creech Antwerp: yes please

[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: We will need to start to wrap up, but I think everyone wants to see this.

[09:30] JerryBuchko: definitely

[09:30] Lotta Flux: oh yes!

[09:30] Tuty Inkpen: yes

[09:30] Fire Centaur: every time I try to touch my inventory sl is giving me probs but I will try

[09:31] Lotta Flux: *Fingers Crossed*

[09:31] Creech Antwerp: wow

[09:31] Lotta Flux: very nice

[09:31] Fire Centaur: ok, this is the “shell”

[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Fun!

[09:31] Fire Centaur: you can see the grey thing
[09:31] Fire Centaur: thats the rezzer
[09:31] Fire Centaur: it has a shared media surface I have to log into
[09:31] Fire Centaur: ine sec
[09:31] Fire Centaur: one sec

[09:31] Ozma Malibu: ah! that is what you meant by scenes. but do people still use their own SL islands?

[09:31] Fire Centaur: yes
[09:32] Fire Centaur: u can make your own scenes and our rezzer saves it
[09:32] Fire Centaur: like a holodec

[09:32] Tuty Inkpen: cool

[09:32] Ozma Malibu: ah

[09:32] Fire Centaur: and you can move thigns around and then save their positions
[09:32] Fire Centaur: ill rezz the first scene
[09:32] Fire Centaur: if i move the shell
[09:33] Fire Centaur: everything moves too
[09:33] Fire Centaur: now ill do the remaining scenes
[09:33] Fire Centaur: the last scene has a pool with sharks
[09:33] Fire Centaur: and quiz chairs
[09:33] Fire Centaur: thats the fun one
[09:33] Fire Centaur: ojk this is the presentation scene

[09:33] Zinnia Zauber: lol

[09:33] Fire Centaur: woa
[09:33] Fire Centaur: its big

[09:33] Buffy Beale: lol this is great

[09:33] Ozma Malibu: so you only have one scene at a time?

[09:33] Fire Centaur: maybe you will need to fly up to it
[09:34] Fire Centaur: oh
[09:34] Fire Centaur: u can rez multiple scenes at once

[09:34] Lotta Flux cams up instead 🙂

[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: This is really great, Fire.

[09:34] Fire Centaur: i have scene 1 and two rezzed

[09:34] Lotta Flux: it is great!

[09:34] Fire Centaur: now I will do the meeting area

[09:34] Creech Antwerp: CRAZY

[09:34] Fire Centaur: and then finaly the quiz scene
[09:34] Fire Centaur: ok
[09:35] Fire Centaur: the fun one is coming now
[09:35] Fire Centaur: quizes with sharks

[09:35] Fire Centaur: ok

[09:35] Lotta Flux: really nice

[09:35] Fire Centaur: do you have time to try the quiz

[09:35] Lotta Flux: and very professional

[09:35] Fire Centaur: if so, please fly up
[09:35] Fire Centaur: and sit on a quiz chair

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Not right now, but

[09:35] Fire Centaur: oh

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Please

[09:35] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yeah, auto rez/holo deck type functionality is always fun to watch

[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: keep this out
[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: so that way everyone can check it out

[09:35] Fire Centaur: ok will do

[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: We need to move forward

[09:36] Fire Centaur: ok
[09:36] Fire Centaur: np
[09:36] Fire Centaur: basically
[09:36] Fire Centaur: what this is
[09:36] Fire Centaur: is a classroom
[09:36] Fire Centaur: connected to a moodle website
[09:36] Fire Centaur: this one is connected to http://englishvillage.avatarclassroom.com
[09:36] Fire Centaur: when a student sits on a quiz chair
[09:36] Fire Centaur: they are automatically enrolled in your site
[09:36] Fire Centaur: am I up for time Zinnia
[09:36] Fire Centaur: ?

[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: Sadly
[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: yes

[09:37] Fire Centaur: ok..

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: But, I think we might want to learn more again

[09:37] Fire Centaur: so much information 🙂

[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: this is so great

[09:37] Fire Centaur: ok
[09:37] Fire Centaur: sounds graet

[09:38] Buffy Beale: this is really great

[09:38] Fire Centaur: yes sure!

[09:38] Ozma Malibu: So, this is sort of a holodeck but you can have more than one scene at a time?

[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: We would love to have you talk more then.

Open Mic / Announcements

[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: Okay, so with that, let’s give a call for Open Mic!

[09:48] Creech Antwerp: Setting up a google form as a survey is pretty easy. I could help with that.

[09:55] Zinnia Zauber: Would that be okay, Jac?

[09:56] jacmacaire Humby: second question is and how to receive an answer from the googlegroup concerning our propositions?

[09:56] Zinnia Zauber: Ah, that is a good question.

[09:56] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yes it is a topic that is better suited for starting a discussion during the mentor meeting

[09:56] Zinnia Zauber: I think I might have to learn about that.

[09:56] Creech Antwerp waves goodbye for this week – hopes he will be back next week

[08:44] Zinnia Zauber: Today we have Sar!
[08:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): cool
[08:44] Zinnia Zauber: Sarvanna, please.
[08:45] Veri Oddfellow: *waves cheerily* Hey y’all!
[08:45] Sarvana Haalan: Virtually Pinning.- A Brief Look at Pinterest
[08:46] Sarvana Haalan: What is Pinterest?
Pinterest is social networking site where the users post, organize, and share special interest photos, graphics or videos on the provided space (categories) known as “boards” or “pinboards”. It was launched in March 2010 and already has over 4 million users today.
Pinterest’s mission is to “connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ their favorite or interesting It allows allows its users to share ‘pins’ on both Twitter and Facebook, which extends your growing Pinterest community.[
The act of posting is called “pinning” and posted images that are called “pins”. You can post favorite travel destinations, wedding ideas, home decorations, favorite footwear. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things, information, and connections.
I have been exploring it for a while now.
[08:47] Veri Oddfellow: Brad Lewis here from Great Strides, Damascus, MD http://www.GreatStrides.org @BfordLewis 😉
[08:47] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Evonne Heyning @amoration in LA today
[08:47] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): on pinterest: http://pinterest.com/amoration 🙂
[08:47] Sarvana Haalan: Pinterest users can upload, save, sort and manage images, known as pins, and other media content (ie. videos) through collections known as pinboards. Pinboards are generally themed so that pins can easily be organized, categorized and discovered by other users. Pinterest acts as a personalized media platform, whereby your own content as well as anyone else’s uploaded pins can be browsed on the main page. Users can then save their favourite pins to one of their own boards using the ‚ÄúPin It‚Äù button. Content can also be found outside of Pinterest and similarly uploaded to a board via the ‚ÄúPin It‚Äù button which can be downloaded to the bookmark bar on a web browser. Check out my search for TechSoup‚Ķ.http://pinterest.com/search/?q=techsoup
[08:47] Sarvana Haalan: A look of cool pins
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: interesting … we don’t even really pin to Pinterest on my team. These are from others
[08:49] Sarvana Haalan: I use http://pinterest.com/cherrynetwork/virtual-living-with-sarvana/
[08:49] Sarvana Haalan: yes…
[08:49] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): I pin TechSoup-related things
[08:49] Sarvana Haalan: I post NPSL events as well as other folks
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: it’s great that others are starting our presence here
[08:49] Sarvana Haalan: But it puts TechSoup out there for a wide audience
[08:50] Sarvana Haalan: Main question…
[08:50] Sarvana Haalan: How to Get Started:
1. First, you must request an invite from Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/landing/) or ask a current Pinterest user to send you an invite.
2. Set up your profile and categorize your pinboards.
3. Connect to your Facebook and Twitter friends and followers.
4. Search other boards for “pins” pins based on your keywords or categories.
5. Be sure to pin, Like, pin or comment on any image or video that is pinned.
With interest, your nonprofit can share events photos, engage others with common interest, and promote your causes.
[08:50] Sarvana Haalan: Pinboards can be used by educators to plan lessons. Teachers can pin sites for later referral. Students can pin and organize sources and collaborate on projects.

[08:51] Sarvana Haalan: It is such a cool social media tool…
[08:51] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): (hmmm… hadn’t thought of Pinterest as a collaborative platform…)
[08:52] Sarvana Haalan: Creative thinking…
[08:52] Sarvana Haalan: Commerce
Brands like fashion e-commerce website use Pinterest as a virtual storefront for driving customers to their website. Many brands and small businesses are using Pinterest, following best practices to get traffic on their websites and buzz around their products.
Users’ Demographics
The site has been popular with American women and, in 2012, it was reported that 83% of the U.S. users were women. In Britain, however, 56% of the users were male and their age profile was different too, being about 10 years younger than in the U.S., where the age range was typically 35-44.
Business
Retail companies have taken advantage of Pinterest for advertising and style trending. The web design provides an ideal layout for ‚Äústyle conscious retailers”, where products can easily be visualized within a consumer context. Companies like The Gap, Chobani, Nordstrom and West Elm use Pinterest as a tool for online referrals that link users with similar interests to a company.
[08:52] BELOVEDROX: Is it accessible and readable by screenreaders
[08:52] Sarvana Haalan: It is a great way to reach women especially American women when you look at th eDemographics
[08:53] Sarvana Haalan: Yes… it is web-based.
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): many people ahve seen the commerical applications. How are nonprofits using it?
[08:53] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Beloved, though the content is mostly image focused, so would think it would only be as good as someone’e comments/notes on what they pin
[08:53] Sarvana Haalan: I post AIDS awareness messages on the CHA
[08:53] Sarvana Haalan: RE Project
[08:54] Gentle Heron: Images can be described in text.
[08:54] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): think about giving context in your text
[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: I even post rl posters
[08:54] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): framing the story when you pin
[08:54] Gentle Heron: (but that’s another topic)
[08:54] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): and yes, I get more repins than retweets by far
[08:54] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): huge traffic
[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: The only concern has been… Copyright
[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: Copyrighted content
Pinterest has a notification system which allows copyright holders to request that content be removed from the site. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) safe harbor status of Pinterest has been questioned given that it actively promotes its users to copy to Pinterest, for their use, any image on the internet. Pinterest users cannot claim safe harbor status and as such are exposed to possible legal action for pinning copyrighted material.
A “nopin” HTML meta tag was released by Pinterest on February 20, 2012 to allow websites to opt out of their images being pinned. On February 24, 2012 Flickr implemented the code to allow users to opt out their photos.
[08:54] DyVerse Jeffery-Steele (dyverse): wego health has a pinterest account and is used to show upcoming tweet chats and had a campaign to upload pictures based on health stigma’s
[08:55] Frans Charming: you can’t pin facebook pictures either.
[08:55] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Also Facebook images currently do not pin directly, but lots of people pull images from FB and repin them
[08:55] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): there’s a bookmarklet that makes it a one click easy operation
[08:55] Sarvana Haalan: Your imagination will be what really limits the use.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: It is so interesting to people that the college asked me to teach a class in it this fall.
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: my pins appear automatically on my Facebook Timeline once I linked it to my Pinterest account.
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (you should probably wrap up)
[08:56] jacmacaire Humby: If you want to know what we do with Pinterest http://pinterest.com/humanbe/
[08:56] Rhiannon Chatnoir: also there have been some nefarious uses for link baiting to other sites or using Pinterest as a means for hollow affiliate marketing spam with images that link through to such
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: Perfect… that’s my presention on Virtually Pinning!
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: Thank for th eopp!
[08:57] Gentle Heron: Very nicely done, Sarvana.
[08:57] DyVerse Resident: Applause!
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Sar!
[08:57] Buffy Beale: cheering, thanks Sar!
[08:57] Veri Oddfellow: /applause
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Thanks Sarvana
[08:57] Sarvana Haalan: *the opp
[08:57] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Thanks Sarvana
[08:57] Zotarah Shepherd: Thank you Sarvana
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’m a huge fan of pinterest
[08:57] Sarvana Haalan: cool… will look for your pins
[08:57] DyVerse Jeffery-Steele (dyverse): http://pinterest.com/rickygdavis/
[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yeah please post your links to your pinterest page for others

[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Bether Kanter of course has already done some awesome work documenting the public good uses of pinterest
[08:59] Ozma Malibu: I won’t post mine yet cos I’ve just been experimenting so far, but now I have lots of new directions!

DISCUSSION ON FUTURE OF THE NPC

[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ok so lets move on to our main topic: discussing the future of the NPC
[08:59] Veri Oddfellow: http://pinterest.com/jhary/great-strides/
[08:59] Sarvana Haalan: Beth Kanter does awesome work on everything related to Social media… smiles
[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Thisis really thecontinuation of a conversation we’ve been having over the past month or so
[09:00] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and will continue over the month and beyond
[09:00] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): In general, I think itsa good idea for a community to have scheduled check-ins about the vitality of their community, what is going well, what could be better, and how to move forward
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I wanted to kick off with presenting your own data from the survey many of you filled out
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But Glitter, was there anything you wanted to say at the top?
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: not really.. just eager to hear yr results
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: of teh survey
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: and thanks for filling it out, to those of you who did
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Great so lets just start there
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thewonderful summaryof the results was done by Rob Foster of TechSoup.
[09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Youcan see the slides behind us or here: http://www.slideshare.net/TechSoupGlobal/npc-survey-2012
[09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We sent out this survey via various means to NPC tenants, members of our listserv, FB group, and SL groups
[09:04] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We received 35 responses
[09:04] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): obviously the majority of those who responded were members or tenants of the NPC
[09:05] Gentle Heron: How many total tenants are there in NPC?
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): 140 tenants, about
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I think we just added 1 , Blueberry Dreams
[09:05] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): shows there’s some care here, a good response rate
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (hi hifeng)
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yeah its a fine response rate
[09:06] Sarvana Haalan: what is the max capacity with the present spaces?
[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We asked people what activities and services they find the most valuable
[09:06] Gentle Heron: 25% is not a particularly good response rate.
[09:06] 01 Hifeng: hi Rik, heh
[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Saravana, we’ll get into that later….
[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): let me finish wit hthe results
[09:06] Ozma Malibu: Gentle for online surveys it’s not actually too bad.
[09:07] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): the most “essential” activity was “trainings and workshops”
[09:07] Glitteractica Cookie: Gentle, statistically, it’s actually much higher than the norm for online (unpaid) surveys
[09:07] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): I think it’s great that 35 people care enough to invest time in this community, there’s some juice
[09:07] Glitteractica Cookie: agree In kenzo
[09:07] Nany (nany.kayo): Rik did a good job of reminding us to complete the survey
[09:07] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): followed by virtual office space, then the weekly meeting and networking
[09:08] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): so workshops are high on the interest list
[09:08] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yes
[09:08] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): In the past we did webinars inworld as well, a mixed reality workshop format.
[09:08] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): which leads us to the next question: what services ./ activities do youwish we provided more of
[09:08] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Do you think enough people would want to attend if we promoted those well?
[09:08] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Trainings and workshops was number 1
[09:09] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): simulcasts of real world events was number 2
[09:09] Sarvana Haalan: got my vote
[09:09] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): sorry forgot to advance theslide
[09:09] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): I’m wondering about the mix of the two that we have done in previous years, we’re not doing much on this right now and there’s a threshold of participation that’s needed to make it viable.
[09:10] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we wanted to know how muchtime our members and tenants were spending in SL
[09:10] Glitteractica Cookie: In Kenzo, can u clarify which you are referring to? Not doing much of which of the two?
[09:10] Panny Bakerly: isn’t there a way to track that?
[09:10] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Panny, we do have ways
[09:10] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): but we also wanted to ask
[09:10] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): We used to bring our TechSoup webinars inworld but that hasn’t been a pattern in 2012.
[09:10] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): We do bring in OCTRIBE, but last time no one came.
[09:10] Glitteractica Cookie: ah, i see
[09:11] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): it was across the board, but many loggedin several times a day or several times a week
[09:11] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): which is not unexpected
[09:11] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): so wondering if we should be doing events differently here, promoting them more widely to the SL audience or just choosing different types of workshops & events
[09:11] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): this is helpful, thank you Rik
[09:11] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We provide other non-SL services and social media and wanted to know which them were important to you
[09:12] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): The blog / website of the NPC was seen as the most essential
[09:12] Buffy Beale: I think it would help to start building the nonprofit attendance and from that the events
[09:12] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): with the twitter feed and facebook trailing in 2nd and 3rd
[09:12] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): email was surprisingly not very essential to many
[09:13] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We asked folks about some of our special events that get hosted here and their participation
[09:13] ray2009 Hazelnut: If I could briefly chip in here. Other places like Book Island send out reminders. It has been hard to find out about this place
[09:13] Glitteractica Cookie: good feedback ray2009… we will work on that
[09:14] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): hi ray2009, good to know. we’ll get to next steps in a bit.
[09:14] Glitteractica Cookie: maybe Parhelion can send out inworld reminders
[09:14] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): well get to taht in a bit please
[09:14] Glitteractica Cookie: ok
[09:14] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): almost done
[09:14] Buffy Beale: So that brings to mind the idea of having small displays/1-prim signs scattered around other sims
[09:14] Buffy Beale: ok 🙂
[09:15] Sarvana Haalan: I can post signs in the Payens region
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so as in kenzo said, it does take quite a bit of work to bring in a webinar, stream a conference, or organize a big event at theNPC
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): sadly according to the results most people either never or only once attended these more special events held here
[09:15] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): We can discuss which opportunities are valuable enough that volunteers are willing to work with us on them.
[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: People are excited about that prospect – Mixed Reality opportunities.
[09:15] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Advancing the slides in a webinar where mixed reality would be very beneficial, for instance.
[09:16] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): This space is great for conversation around an event when there’s people feeding the conversation and working toward solutions together, but structuring the experience is important
[09:16] Sarvana Haalan: my local meetup folks are interested in mixed reality events… just have to identify a local team for the streaming
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We started providing regular updates from TechSoup about other events, services and opportunities that we are sponsoring orknowabout
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Most of of your find those “somewhat essential” or “essential”
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): which is good to know
[09:17] Glitteractica Cookie: indeed
[09:17] Frans Charming: Sarvana, where is locale?
[09:17] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): and it’s great to see many of you on our webinars, NPlive events, tweetchats
[09:17] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): thanks for making time to become experts in your fields 🙂
[09:18] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And lastly, from our perspective at techsoup, it was good to know that the large majority of you are members or avail yourselves of the services of TechSoup.org
[09:18] Veri Oddfellow: Yay TechSoup!
[09:18] Buffy Beale: exactly Veri 🙂
[09:18] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Adobe CS6 – just saying for your designers out there…
[09:18] Sarvana Haalan: Baltimore City – Mount Washington
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): there were many other comments , suggestions and complaints that you wrote to us, which we appreciate
[09:19] Sarvana Haalan: in Maryland USA
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): for example, time zone issues of when events are held was cited a fewtimes as making it hard for some to attend
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): several noted that we should find better ways to increase attendance and traffic
[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I might have missed some important points that people madein their responses
[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): but that’s the general over view
[09:20] Veri Oddfellow: Well done, Rik! Very thorough … thanks!@
[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): This is obviously more a starting off point , than definitive
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Wonderful!
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But I think it does suggest some ways we could be working better as a community, and your core team can be supporting you and your work.
[09:21] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): So there’s some outreach/community building strategy to consider, some ways to refine communication as a whole, and a look at our offerings and how to create compelling experiences here
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Glitter, this might be a good time to frame the discussion from the perspective of TechSoup
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (hi bulkalak, btw)
[09:22] bulaklak: hi
[09:22] Glitteractica Cookie: Hi Bulaklak… I will let you continue from Here, Rik and chime in when I see the right time
[09:23] Glitteractica Cookie: go on
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): will do
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So to put it bluntly: the NPC is not being used to its potential. I thinkwecan all agree on that.
[09:24] Glitteractica Cookie: yes
[09:24] Buffy Beale: yes
[09:24] Ozma Malibu: yes
[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We have a large archipelago of islands, many office spaces, many places where evenst could be occuring, and don’t have the traffic, events, or public presence to justify all that.
[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We are the largest community of nonprofits in the virtual world. But we aren’t really growing.
[09:25] Glitteractica Cookie: We founded the community with the intent of having an innovative space for nonprofits to engage and network about nonprfotis and technology issues and to help answer tech questions. We hoped that providing virtual office space would encourage the networking to happen organically, via the stumble upon factor
[09:26] Glitteractica Cookie: meaning, you walk around, stumble upon an org and engage and network, but honestly, this place is not populated unless we put on an event , like the regular friday meetings, so we are wondering how much of the fc space is even what you want/need
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): weknow that many of you find a lot of valuein having a virtual office space. But others set up an office and then don’t do anything with it of substance.
[09:27] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): I handle a few requests from Parhelion on office changes and know that some of you care about your individual spaces, but there’s not a lot of activity in them once they are built.
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So we want to be open to questioning our original model, and asking how can webest be supporting you and other nonprofits to use SL most effecitvely?
[09:27] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I track my traffic and the number of people who come to my office
[09:27] Jen (jenelle.levenque): It’s gone up of late and I’m not sure why
[09:28] Sarvana Haalan: So could each of us commit to inviting a colleague for a community “OPen House”… The flying chair tour is what helped to hook me… LOL, LOL
[09:28] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Do people really use SL and the NPC campus as a virutal co-working space? If not, what would be needed for people to find value in that?
[09:28] Glitteractica Cookie: the office hours and flying chair were part of the original plan, but seem to have lost interest
[09:28] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Some people use more sandbox or public space and less in the way of offices.
[09:28] Ozma Malibu: As you’ve probably noticed, times have been hard. Nonprofit people get discouraged – they work so hard and then the need is even greater. So the networking here and the support are invaluable. What I see though is that just like in school, people use a variety of ways to meet. They meet here first but may communicate via email, FB – phone calls – Pinerest? – then back here –
[09:28] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Right, we build friendships and colleague relationships in this space that move beyond SL
[09:29] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Ozma, right there is an ebb and flow, and a larger world of tools to use and explore
[09:29] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): a bigger nonprofit commons than just SL 🙂
[09:29] Sarvana Haalan: I communicate in other way but I need my Tuesday nights in NPSL… lol, lol
[09:29] Ozma Malibu: But, what I am saying is that this space also remains important
[09:29] Buffy Beale: yes I agree Oz
[09:29] Rhiannon Chatnoir: nod, though a lot of the presense time we have spent here has strengthened our interactions beyond NPC
[09:29] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But not the kind of space that people are going to regularly “do work” in like an office.
[09:30] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): But why not?
[09:30] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): more like a place to get energy, motivation, ideas, and trainings.
[09:30] Veri Oddfellow: I agree that this space is important, but it’s most useful for the tech-friendly.
[09:30] Ozma Malibu: We fly through the Internet and use all the spaces but this is home
[09:30] Veri Oddfellow: and those who want to network with others similar friends/new friends
[09:30] Buffy Beale: and to have the offices has been great but I would like to see us move to a tier system… the more you participate the larger the office
[09:30] Veri Oddfellow: It has not been useful for fund raising … for most of us
[09:30] Sarvana Haalan: I beg to difference… I conduct business meetings in-world… saves travel time… and traffic woes
[09:30] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): buffy , we’ve thought of that as well
[09:31] Buffy Beale: but not to turn away anyone who wants to have a sign or sall display
[09:31] HB Eternal: we use our office to meet with people and each other
[09:31] Buffy Beale: *small
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): for some just having a small display might be enough
[09:31] Nany (nany.kayo): Seems like NPC needs at least one full sim to hold meetings of this size with or without offices.
[09:31] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, a kiosk model
[09:31] Veri Oddfellow: I has not been that useful for driving traffic to real world events, other than some visiting between us … which is great, but doesn’t generate larger numbers/revenues
[09:31] Buffy Beale: yes Glitter
[09:31] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, one sim, but maybe not 4
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): for others, a regular classroom would be ideal, or a dance floor
[09:31] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Is there a reason why the other streams of communication/relating can’t be brought into offices inworld?
[09:31] Veri Oddfellow: yes yes … less sims, for sure
[09:32] Buffy Beale: depends how many less you’re thinking of
[09:32] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): creator/builder/producers/organizers seem to find value – a mix of public commons and more meeting spaces seems valuable
[09:32] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): franklyI would rather we had one sim that was much more vital than 4 that are ghosttowns
[09:32] Veri Oddfellow: There’s also the question of the learning curve for entry into SL … which is well known, but has gotten easier
[09:32] HB Eternal: we find SL and NPC to be quality of connection versus quantity of connection
[09:32] Buffy Beale: Down to one would feel sad to me
[09:32] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): deep relationships form here, yes HB
[09:32] Veri Oddfellow: People doing events online will find it more useful … due to the reach of the net and the regular users of their events/services
[09:32] jacmacaire Humby: 🙁
[09:33] Veri Oddfellow: Good point HB
[09:33] Ozma Malibu: So many beautiful spaces here
[09:33] Buffy Beale: I see there’s room to downsize but would like to at least have 2
[09:33] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But what if it was one that was heavily promoted, had events all the time, and frequent public notice and press?
[09:33] Glitteractica Cookie: i dunno, 35-45 ppl every friday is a good number, and the quantity is steady and impressive for the five years we’ve been open. But only on the days we hold mtgs
[09:33] Sarvana Haalan: May I am being a “Pollyanna” … but “you built it now we must remember or show them th eimportance of the total space for them to “come”
[09:33] Veri Oddfellow: We are event driven, it’s true …
[09:33] Sarvana Haalan: *remind
[09:33] Dancers Yao: Our office space was just starting to be used to teach about human rights with a small group of students this past year. I think it will start to bring more people.
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): andwe don’t want to take away from that Dancers
[09:34] Glitteractica Cookie: it’s what Rik said in his white paper 4 years ago, and it hasn’t changed
[09:34] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): I think a virtual office space has to have more functionality built into it than just someplace to be virtually present.
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): but you are the excpetion
[09:34] Veri Oddfellow: Also, as SL goes, perhaps, so goes NPC??
[09:34] Rhiannon Chatnoir: I would think before tier down that much, would have to analyze what you did want to keep. There is only so many prims, room in a single sim and if things are consolidated, would be tight
[09:34] Frans Charming: Suggestion, there are several SL only conferences, and RL conferences who stream to SL, and interact with them. Would having them host the SL part on NPC not be a good way to get people here?
[09:34] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I’ve had some students from a couple of colleges meet in my office to discuss social work issues
[09:34] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Just like a coworking space…
[09:34] Ozma Malibu: Floaters is expanding to a RL gallery but for the next 2 years we’d planned to use the NPC office space as the actuall location while we garner support.
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): That’s good to hear Ozma
[09:35] Sarvana Haalan: This is my co-working space… LOL, LOL
[09:35] Ozma Malibu: For instance I am meeting with the City of Mesa next week and am giving them this address.
[09:35] Veri Oddfellow: Rik – to the point of heavily promoting … I wonder if co-branding with larger groups in the general SL space might be of use.
[09:35] Glitteractica Cookie: great idea Frans, but we’d need to be connected with them
[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Our members are showing their artwork in our office because we have no RL location.
[09:35] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Sarvana, Yes
[09:35] Ozma Malibu: I am inspired by Savana btw.
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): For me, I would like the NPC to support nonprofits at whatever level of activity they are interested in: from one-off events, occasional check-ins, workshops 2-3 times a year, and the hardcore like you alls
[09:35] Buffy Beale: 🙂
[09:35] Veri Oddfellow: I’m thinking of “riding” on the back of another social group that would allow them to feel good and drive traffic to cause-related orgs/events.
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Right now we are mostly just supporting the hardcore SL devotees
[09:36] Ozma Malibu: Veri, what a good idea
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): there are several other more casual or experimental users that we could bring in more easily
[09:36] Veri Oddfellow: We get more attendees and they get to participate in causes … very hot, these days
[09:37] Veri Oddfellow: make friends and help each other at the org level, no?
[09:37] Sarvana Haalan: has a major role in their orgs
[09:37] Sarvana Haalan: OMG… my whole “soapbox” conversation got cut… lol, lol
[09:37] Buffy Beale: I think we could do more to make this fun to come to.. like having a treasure hunt or a sim-wide obstacle course; something fun to do
[09:37] Ozma Malibu: so it seems like we’ve seen the issue and have been working individually on different creative aspects
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Lots of great ideas and suggestions already.
[09:38] Buffy Beale: lol Sar…
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I should mention the TechSoup context of this.
[09:38] Rhiannon Chatnoir: if do narrow it down to one sim, NPC will never be able to host an event larger than that one sim’s capacity at any one given time… so your numbers will remain in that 40ish since most sims 40 – 60 (with avatars, prims, etc) is all it can ever hold well
[09:38] Nany (nany.kayo): I still think NPC should encourage rather than discourage the formation of new nonprofits.
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So TechSoup initiated and continues to support the NPC as a free service for nonprofits for the past five years.
[09:38] Sarvana Haalan: I got great response from my Baltimore-based Tech.Social Change group…
[09:38] Ozma Malibu: The city has invited us to write up what we are doing for a newsletter, here
[09:38] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): there’s a huge prim issue to consider in any reconfig and thankfully we have awesome people here who can help sort through any challenge
[09:39] Glitteractica Cookie: Nany– I don’t understnad this comment: I still think NPC should encourage rather than discourage the formation of new nonprofits. Can u clarify?
[09:39] Sarvana Haalan: we will be integrating VW more into our discussions and activities… we are a NTEN member 🙂
[09:39] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): In order for that to continue to be a positive relationship, there needs to be a stronger connection between the NPC and the larger constellation of nonprofits and networks that TechSoup works with.
[09:39] Ozma Malibu: aha
[09:39] Nany (nany.kayo): Glitter, I was surprised early on that NPC discourages new nonprofits. I think people would be interested in learning how to set up a nonprofit and participate in NPC if they could get that kind of info and assistance.
[09:40] Veri Oddfellow: Yes, good point, Rik
[09:40] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And the other events, networks, forums and products taht TechSoup provices.
[09:40] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): provides
[09:40] Veri Oddfellow: Nany, there are others that do that state by state in the US.
[09:40] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Nany, I would hope that we didn’t discourage new nonprofits
[09:40] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Nany, we have looked at ways to support new nonprofits through many types of interactive events 🙂 More to come!
[09:40] Veri Oddfellow: For example – the Maryland Assn. of Nonprofits
[09:40] Glitteractica Cookie: yeah– that comment is troubling and confusing to me
[09:40] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and in fact many of our members ARE new nonprofits
[09:40] Veri Oddfellow: They provide pro bono legal help and fundraising support … very targeted
[09:41] Veri Oddfellow: The trouble with new nonprofits is the value proposition of the time spent.
[09:41] Sarvana Haalan: ok… are there any nonprofits from Maryland or Baltimore signed up as members in addition to Chayenn and Lauren?
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So ideally we would love to see a more organic connection between our community here and other nonprofit communities that exist elsewhere
[09:41] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): some of our members here are just in formation or have not yet received official designation from their country, and I have personally helped quite a few orgs here figure out how to move forward. There are some great networks we can tap into, Rik is right on.
[09:41] Nany (nany.kayo): Based on your own repsonse to a question I posed a couple of years ago, Glitter. You told me that it was not a good idea to encourage people to start a nonprofit, rather encourage them to join an existing one.
[09:41] Glitteractica Cookie: and more nonprofit tech based activity going on here too
[09:42] Veri Oddfellow: TEchSoup has GREAT stuff for new nonprofits … NPC, not as much …. though it might be a good place for tech-friendly new nonprofits to get some in-depth technical assistance, taht could work …
[09:42] Veri Oddfellow: Kind of a “Meet the Expert” ….
[09:42] Nany (nany.kayo): I was looking for help applying for 501c3 and could not find any here
[09:42] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Such as environmental networks and coalitions, cause-based groups and networks, etc.
[09:42] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yes In Kenzo, in a lot of ways, SL has been a incubator of social good org/causes
[09:42] Glitteractica Cookie: Whoa, you are taking a comment that was in a totally different context
[09:42] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Nany, I’ve done quite a few 501
[09:42] Glitteractica Cookie: in general, if someone wants to start a nonprofit, it is best practice to see if one with a similar mission exists first
[09:42] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Let me know
[09:42] DyVerse Jeffery-Steele (dyverse): nods at Nany the most helpful person to me has been Jenelle with me trying to start a non profit
[09:42] Glitteractica Cookie: that is what i meant, so as not to reinvent what is being done well
[09:43] Glitteractica Cookie: That is what we were talking about
[09:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Nany is talking about the legal steps to become a nonprofit
[09:43] Glitteractica Cookie: but this is about the NPC
[09:43] Nany (nany.kayo): Sorry, that was the impression I got. I think workshops on setting up and running a nonprofit would be a good idea
[09:43] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): We’ve considered creating more content on starting new orgs Nany and will be sure to let you know what we’re up to on that front. In general it’s good to be wise when starting any new project, that you’re doing it in the most efficient way.
[09:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): which is not one of the core services we provide
[09:43] Brielle Coronet: is there a mentoring program here that helps walk a newbie np thru this group networking and how to best use the resources? i feel sort of lost
[09:43] Sarvana Haalan: I always ask if they are using TechSoup first? Then I share my past org experiences and then I share info about NPSL.
[09:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): but certainly one that would be useful to have here
[09:43] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Yes we have a group of mentors
[09:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Hi Brielle, we have a mentors group that helps nonprofits with all sorts of things
[09:43] HB Eternal: welcome to the beautifully diverse world of nonprofits… such uniqueness seeking ways to collaborate in spite of their individual agenda… sounds like a great new paradigm for our world
[09:44] Jen (jenelle.levenque): We usually meet right after this meeting
[09:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): including how to get started
[09:44] Brielle Coronet: ok when i joined the group i didn’t see that info
[09:44] Glitteractica Cookie: Which info, Brielle?
[09:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): about mentors
[09:44] Glitteractica Cookie: oh ok
[09:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Someone from them will be in touch soon
[09:44] Brielle Coronet: mentors
[09:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So we need to move on
[09:44] Glitteractica Cookie: got it
[09:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But this is a super rich discussion
[09:44] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): As someone who has gone through two fiscal sponsors failing in the last year, it’s good to have strong partners and lots of due diligence, and as we create a commons here of people who care about this sector we seek to help each other be most effective. Thanks Rik.
[09:45] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Again we don’t want to scare people, just get you thinking
[09:45] Brielle Coronet: is there a listing of events from this group so we can support one another’s causes?
[09:45] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): How can we make this place even more awesome, make sure that TechSoup gets the most bang for its buck, and support your causes and others like you to do great work here and beyond
[09:45] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I’ve proposed a leadership conference with workshops for nonprofits
[09:45] Sarvana Haalan: Brena, Lizzette, Coughran, and Zinnia were any offivcail or unofficial “welcome wagon” for me…They were helpful and made me feel included enough that I wanted to be a part of this community.
[09:45] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): That’s the challenge before us.
[09:45] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, it’s VERY hard to start a nonprofit, and we were just encouraging folks to partner up, rather than compete for funding with no experience b/c they believe in a acause, but again, that’s a different conversation, but an interesting one we’d be happy to host
[09:46] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I hope the mentors will work with me on it
[09:46] jacmacaire Humby: Sorry, but I don’t really understand the criticism, because you have so much refuse our participation, to change Eco Commons, that we no longer insisted to do something outside our walls..
[09:46] Nany (nany.kayo): Great idea, Jenelle. My fiscal sponsor, the Potlatch Fund, offers dozens of workshops that would be useful to all of us.
[09:46] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Glitter, I’ve done 5 sets so far and assisted a couple more, but only US
[09:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Jac, I know you have kept proposing something, but I’ve never really understood it. Of course we appreciate any help to revitalize the Eco Commons.
[09:47] Brielle Coronet: well we need a mentor badly 🙁
[09:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Perhaps it is a language issue, n’est pas?
[09:47] Glitteractica Cookie: sets of what… I’m missing the thread here, Jen. But if you are referring to leading that talk, let’s get you up here for a future NPC meeting
[09:47] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Looks like a good idea to me Jenelle, there are many of you with good ideas ready to grow
[09:47] Ozma Malibu: Brielle, can you stay after this meeting and meet with the mentors?
[09:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So the saddest part for me is that I won’t be here to help you further in this conversation.
[09:47] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I’ve done the IRS paperwork for 5 nonprofits
[09:47] Brielle Coronet: i wish i could but i’m at RL work atm and must go to a meeting
[09:47] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Jaccques seemed to be simply looking to see wht the future of the environmental focused NPC sim was and if he could work to revitalize it
[09:47] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Plus incorporating 3 of them
[09:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So we should transition to the next agenda item, as awkward as that is….
[09:48] Brielle Coronet: <–is taking her lunch in office to be here
[09:48] jacmacaire Humby: When you want.. but we must discuss betyween the tenants concern by Eco Commons.. if it’s possible..
[09:48] Ozma Malibu: Yes inK! So many people have had such creative ideas on how to grow – perhaps if we share them!!
[09:48] Glitteractica Cookie: Jen– you are welcome to discuss that and lead an NPC talk on it
[09:48] Glitteractica Cookie: let’s talk about that later
[09:48] Sarvana Haalan: Gliieractica and Zinnia has a “rocking” presentation on Collaboration-Communication-Connection that we should show again here… it would be an excellent mixed reality event to introduce RL colleagues to NPSL
[09:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (I know, I got you all excited, and now I’m leaving!)

FAREWELL TO RIK RIEL AS COMMUNITY MANAGER OF THE NPC

[09:48] Glitteractica Cookie: I want to give Rik the floor now
[09:48] Ozma Malibu: Floaters has been watching Savana.
[09:48] Sarvana Haalan: ?
[09:48] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): I am going to miss having Rik here sooooo much
[09:48] Glitteractica Cookie: I want you all to know how much we’ve grown since Rik has joined us
[09:49] Ozma Malibu: Savana – you do such a good job, set such a good example
[09:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ok let’s move on to my transition
[09:49] Glitteractica Cookie: we are so sad to see him go
[09:49] Glitteractica Cookie: 🙁
[09:49] Veri Oddfellow: Rah Rah Rik!
[09:49] Veri Oddfellow: Many, many thanks!
[09:49] Sarvana Haalan: What…. You are Not leaving us, are you?
[09:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So let me say that it has been an honor and a privilege to serve you this past 15 months or so
[09:49] Dancers Yao: Nany, we found the application for the 501c process was always helped by contacting the government directly…people who will help fill out the forms and answer questions can usually be found on the nonprofit gov sites.
[09:49] Nany (nany.kayo): thanks, Rik. You have been an inspiration.
[09:49] Zinnia Zauber: Rah Rik!
[09:49] Rhiannon Chatnoir: thank Rik
[09:49] Glitteractica Cookie: Rik has been an amazing community manager here
[09:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’ve enjoyed your collegiallity, your company, your friendship, and your support
[09:50] Gentle Heron: Thank you Rik for inviting interesting guest speakers to talk to the NPC community.
[09:50] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): Honored by your work here, you have always made sure we are in capable hands and now is no exception 🙂
[09:50] Frans Charming: /me applauds
[09:50] Ozma Malibu: thank you, Rik
[09:50] jacmacaire Humby: why not coming on Eco Commons?
[09:50] Sarvana Haalan: Rik rocks
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And I think I have grown as a community manager since I have been here
[09:50] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Thank you Rik 😀
[09:50] Dancers Yao: thanks Rik…hope you will be here in some way
[09:50] Nany (nany.kayo): Dancers, yes. It would be good to get together and talk about legalities of nonprofits, fundrasing strategies, board formation, etc.
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So a toast to all of you and all that you do.
[09:50] Buffy Beale: Thanks for all you’ve done RIk, leading us each week and bringing in interesting speakers
[09:50] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Thanks Rik
[09:51] Zotarah Shepherd: Thank you Rik
[09:51] 01 Hifeng: thanks Rik
[09:51] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I am proud of what I’ve done, but also wish I could have done so much more.
[09:51] Buffy Beale: all the blog posts too
[09:51] Jen (jenelle.levenque): My apologies, but I have to get back to RL
[09:51] jacmacaire Humby: Why not coming to see us in RL in Paris?
[09:51] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Rik it is always a pleasure to see in action and work with you in virtual or real life
[09:51] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): bye Jen
[09:51] jacmacaire Humby: You will understand better what we are doing here.. 🙂
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): As you have read, I have many hats I wear, and just one head
[09:52] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Rik for you work here!
[09:52] Brielle Coronet: the beauty of sl is you can have more than one head lol
[09:52] Buffy Beale: lol Brielle
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I still do work for Global Kids, run betterverse.org, and started working recently at the California Academy of Sciences

Forum on the Future of the NPC this Friday, June 1

This Friday, June 1, we will talk as a community about the Nonprofit Commons and its future, look at the results of a recent survey many of you filled out, and discuss transitions in the community management of the NPC over the coming months.

Some questions to ponder prior to our meeting:

  • How to do we maximize the utility of Second Life to help nonprofits reach their goals?
  • How do we invite into the NPC the larger constellations of groups that could benefit from our space and our services?
  • And how do we engage with other online and offline communities of nonprofits that are doing great work?

So come with your ideas about how we can continue to grow and evolve this important space and network.

As I announced in a separate communication, I will be stepping down as community manager of the NPC as of next week, and passing on the responsibilities (and joys) of the position to other capable hands. We’ll have some time for goodbyes and thanks toward the end of the meeting.

Join us for this important gathering on Friday June 1 starting at 8:30am PT. See you at the Plush Nonprofit Commons amphitheater.

A Heartfelt Thanks and Farewell

A little over a year ago, I gratefully accepted the position of Community Manager of the Nonprofit Commons, a community which I have long viewed as one of the best examples of how virtual worlds can benefit real lives and the real world we live in. As a longtime member, volunteer, organizer and friend of the NPC, being paid to support this unique space was an enormous privilege.

So it is with a heavy heart that I inform you all that this is my last week as Community Manager of the Nonprofit Commons.

As many of you know, I have a number of hats that I wear: virtual producer for Global Kids, founder and editor of the virtual worlds blog Betterverse.org, and digital learning educator at the California Academy of Sciences. My work responsibilities at my other positions are going to be ramping up very quickly in the next months, making my ability to effectively serve as NPC community manager impossible. So rather than short-change this community that I love, I am passing on the reins to others who can carry the mandate forward.

In future communications, we will be giving more details about the transition plan. But rest assured that the position is going to be in more than capable hands.

In addition, I think that my departure from the role is a good opportunity for all of us to think about what future we would envision for the NPC. Because while we have had a remarkable run, we also have faced some tremendous challenges in our five years. At the next NPC meeting, I would like us to have an open and frank discussion about where we would like to take the community into the future to ensure its continued growth and vitality.

As a beginning of the conversation, I will present the findings from our recent survey of our members which hopefully you have filled out. After that, we will talk about some of ways that TechSoup would like to see the NPC reach larger constituencies, be more visible to the general public, and be better integrated into the larger constellations of nonprofits around the world that we work with. We are counting on you to help us re-vision the Nonprofit Commons for the next five years.

As for myself, I would like to offer my appreciation to all of you who have been my allies , co-conspirators, advisors and volunteers over the past year. You are the reason I took this position, and what make it so difficult to leave.

First and foremost, thanks to Susan Tenby / Glitteractica Cookie for first approaching me about the position. And to the rest of the Community Team at TechSoup, it has been a real joy working with all of you. Parhelion has borne the brunt of the technical needs of the community, making my job so much easier. And the Mentors have been an always reliable response team for any needs that might arise in our community, well beyond their original mandate.

I hope to participate as I am able in future NPC activities, as time permits. And of course I will be following all of your events, activities and successes via Twitter, Facebook, and on the blog. So I won’t be a complete stranger!

Let me close by saying that I’m still optimistic about the potential of these virtual tools to connect people together, to enlighten and educate, and to inspire actions that better our world. Hopefully my small efforts as the Nonprofit Commons community manager have helped make that potential become reality. It’s been an honor and a pleasure.

P.S. For any questions or concerns about this transition process, please be in touch with us at nonprofitcommons@techsoup.org.

[08:44] alebez: hi bulaklak…i was just going to go into upcomings, but take it away!
[08:44] bulaklak: Okay!
[08:45] bulaklak: So yesterday we had one of our guest tweeters take the help of @TechSoup. Her name is Crystal Schimpf and she’s a librarian from Colorado. She sparked a great conversation about digital inclusion and how libraries provide tech access and training to communities.
[08:45] bulaklak: Please read the Storify here to see all the conversation and resources
[08:45] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/JBZTG4
[08:45] bulaklak: And speaking of Storify, we had Jeff Elder join us from Storify on Wednesday for the #OCTRIBE
[08:46] bulaklak: As some of you know who attended virtually
[08:46] bulaklak: sorry having some internet issues
[08:46] bulaklak: link is coming
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: I saw that Hiro from Japan was there virtually
[08:47] bulaklak: Here is a Storify of Jeff’s talk (is that kind of meta?)
[08:47] bulaklak: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fstorify.com%2Fsusan_chavez%…
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: Jeff from Storify talked about what to do when your community gets angry and turns on you
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: it was a great topic
[08:47] Chimera Cosmos: youch
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: it was really interesting
[08:47] bulaklak: Argh really having connectivity issues sorry
[08:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yeah that NEVER happens
[08:47] Chimera Cosmos: good for everyone to know
[08:47] bulaklak: http://storify.com/susan_chavez/san-francisco-online-community-meetup-fe…
[08:47] Chimera Cosmos: heh
[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: no worries. Poor bulaklak is taking a vacation day and he’s still here, so no need to apologize!
[08:48] bulaklak: I’ve definitely been there!
[08:48] bulaklak: My trial by fire at TechSoup was a near-mutiny of our long-term forum hosts in my first month!
[08:48] bulaklak: A great learning experience, for sure.

[08:49] Chimera Cosmos: The Vision Thing (and different versions thereof) is always a potential problem. 😉
[08:49] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Wow, Crystal’s Twitter post generated quite a bit of discussion… much more than I’d initially noticed.
[08:49] bulaklak: Yes! Crystal was a really GREAT guest tweeter
[08:49] bulaklak: So it sounds like Ale has the upcoming events updates on tap
[08:49] bulaklak: Ale?
[08:50] alebez: oh, you got it. I’ll wait till we have more info.
[08:50] bulaklak: Okie doke.
[08:50] bulaklak: Thanks, folks! More next week.
[08:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thanks bulaklak
[08:50] Chayenn: thank you Bulaklak

MENTORS CENTRAL

[08:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Okay lets move on to mentors central
[08:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Who speaks for our Mentors today?
[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Rik!
[08:52] Zinnia Zauber: We had Sar lined up to share with us about Pinterest.
[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: But, I don’t see her inworld.
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): hmmm
[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: So this may be a chance to encourage folks to visit us Mentors.
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): right!
[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: First, I wanted to wish everyone at Happy Towel Day!
[08:53] Par (parhelion.palou): The mentors get lonely
[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: If you don’t know what that is…
[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: Then maybe you need to know where your towel is.
[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: It is in honor of the author Douglas Adams.
[08:54] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So like a good towel, the Mentors are here to help in any situation
[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: I was pleased to meet him and make him laugh.
[08:54] Ozma Malibu: ooh! you did?
[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: He was a wonderful advocate of tech.
[08:54] Zinnia Zauber: Yes yes
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: He was very tall.
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: lol
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: I gave him a babel fish to stick in his ear.
[08:55] Ozma Malibu: where did you meet him?
[08:55] Buffy Beale: lol Z
[08:55] Chimera Cosmos: Hitchhikers
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: At Powells Bookstore in Portland OR.
[08:55] Zinnia Zauber: http://towelday.org/
[08:56] Chimera Cosmos: (or is there only one h…)
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: The reason I bring him up
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: is that he had a vision of what could be.
[08:56] Ozma Malibu: I always travel with a towel when I travel. Thanks to him.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: And, really we all carry devices that saw far far far ahead.
[08:56] Ozma Malibu: well, that too.
[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: We are like him, creating the future.
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you have read his work?
[08:57] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Yup
[08:57] Par (parhelion.palou): /me puts hand up
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): /me hands up
[08:57] Gentle Heron: oh yes!
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
[08:57] CarmenLittleFawn: I will now
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: I encourage you all to.
[08:57] Namaara MacMoragh: definitely… all of the books… with my sone
[08:57] Jen (jenelle.levenque): It was a series on TV also
[08:57] Jen (jenelle.levenque): For us “old folk”
[08:57] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): He’s a treat to read. Has a great way with words…
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: He is my favorite author by far.
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): anyway…..
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: I still have the computer game from the 1980s.
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: So, as I said, Mentors are here to help you
[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): let’s bring this back to the NPC please
[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): as much as I love Douglas Adams
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Just like the The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is here to guide you.
[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Please join us after this meeting for help or contact us.
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: We know the answer!
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!
[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): there ya go
[08:59] Chimera Cosmos: Towel Day. I always learn cool stuff in SL.
[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): on a related note, can welcome hiFeng as the newest tenant of the NPC?
[08:59] Zinnia Zauber: I can always bring around! 😉
[09:00] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Hifeng, can you introduce your group in a quick sentence?
[09:00] Glitteractica Cookie: Agree, let’s please bring this conversation back on topic. Thanks Rik
[09:00] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Welcome Hifeng
[09:00] jacmacaire Humby: Bienvenue.. 🙂
[09:00] 01 Hifeng: oh, oh, sorry, i was afk
[09:00] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): np
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): tell the nice folks who you are representing as our newest member
[09:01] 01 Hifeng: ok, so…
[09:01] 01 Hifeng: i’m Kesja Plecha, president of Blueberry Dreams Foundation
[09:01] 01 Hifeng: we’re doing immunity and cancer research
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): nice
[09:01] 01 Hifeng: i’ll paste from notecard, give me a sec
[09:02] 01 Hifeng: ok, that’s research we’re doing right now:
[09:02] 01 Hifeng: Blueberry Dreams research // Project 1 – Therapy for patients with low immunity We’re developing therapy involving lifestyle change, dietary changes, medicines and herbs. Project 2 – skin cancer treatment We’re working on drug that would be absorbed through skin and remove skin cancers. Tissue would slowly change color until it would have natural skin color and melanoma would get absorbed. Since our subjects have various skin abnormalities we’re testing our medicine on melanoma, skin cancer on breast (not lump inside), nevi near thyroid, capillary haemangioma and benign nevis.
[09:03] 01 Hifeng: that’d be it 🙂
[09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): woah
[09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): that’s really great
[09:03] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): wow
[09:03] CarmenLittleFawn: yes it is
[09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we’ll have to have you back to talkmore about that in detail soon!
[09:03] Rhiannon Chatnoir: great stuff! Are involved with the actual research, you personally and the nonprofit?
[09:03] 01 Hifeng: xD
[09:03] 01 Hifeng: yes
[09:04] 01 Hifeng: actually i was very ill
[09:04] 01 Hifeng: and started doing research on myself
[09:04] 01 Hifeng: and that’s how my adventure with science began
[09:04] CarmenLittleFawn: :-))
[09:04] 01 Hifeng: later i opened a foundation with my sister
[09:04] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’m sure it’s an inspiring story
[09:04] Rhiannon Chatnoir: thanks

FEDERAL CONSORTIUM FOR VIRTUAL WORLDS

[09:04] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): but for now let’s move on to our featured topic….
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): the Federal Consortium for Virtual worlds!
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): A number of us attended their last conference, which was streamed inworld and was held in DC
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Rik!
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So we thought it would good to share some knowledge about what happend with the rest of the community
[09:05] Zinnia Zauber: I would love to have my peeps join me down here please.
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But I see Paulette is here, head of the FCVW
[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Perhaps I could ask her to say a few words about what the consortium is ?
[09:06] Zinnia Zauber: Yes yes! Paulette thank you for joining us!
[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I know her time is short
[09:06] Paulette Darkstone: sure
[09:06] Chimera Cosmos: Yes, and some others who attended too! Cool.
[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Feel free to come down or type from up there
[09:06] Paulette Darkstone: The FCVW started with 5 — Eric was one of them
[09:06] Gentle Heron: Thanks Paulette for coming today.
[09:06] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): 🙂
[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): /me waves to eric
[09:06] Paulette Darkstone: It has over 3,000 members from govt, business and academia
[09:07] Paulette Darkstone: We are trying to solve using virtual worlds in govt
[09:07] Paulette Darkstone: sahre best practices
[09:07] Paulette Darkstone: and give each other support
[09:07] Buffy Beale: wow that’s great 01
[09:07] Paulette Darkstone: The conference has been going now for 5 years and is predominately sponsored by the iCollege
[09:08] Paulette Darkstone: It does not have its own funding
[09:08] Paulette Darkstone: we have it at NDU because we can use facilities free
[09:08] Paulette Darkstone: What was not transmitted were the 25 poster sessions and the conference workshops
[09:09] Paulette Darkstone: the live stream has become critical and the interactions into 5 virtual worlds
[09:09] Paulette Darkstone: Still getting data on attendance virtually
[09:09] Paulette Darkstone: Randy Hinriearchs and I built the program this y
[09:09] Paulette Darkstone: year
[09:10] Paulette Darkstone: I thought it did a nice job of setting the stage and applied uses
[09:10] Paulette Darkstone: Am interested in what everyone else things
[09:10] Paulette Darkstone: thinks
[09:10] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): I attended virtually this year and thought it was a really rich experience.
[09:10] Paulette Darkstone: Eric do you want to add anything
[09:10] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Sounds like a really ambitious conference on a limited budget!
[09:10] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Outstanding keynotes.
[09:10] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I think that’s a great summary. wish more of you could come in person, but I know travel is hard.
[09:11] Paulette Darkstone: yes we have a little money from vendor sponsorship to pay for speaker tracel
[09:11] Paulette Darkstone: travel
[09:11] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): the video stream is amazing and the inworld activity is fun to watch
[09:11] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): but a lot of stuff happens in small groups too 🙂
[09:11] Paulette Darkstone: The networking is teh best part
[09:11] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Would love to see more blended reality synchronous interaction.
[09:11] Thynka Little: as conferences go, the cost was relatively low
[09:12] DyVerse Jeffery-Steele (dyverse): nods at Jerry
[09:12] Paulette Darkstone: It basically covers food and some admin costs
[09:12] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): Paulette got us wireless internet this year. huge bonus. 🙂
[09:12] Thynka Little: i swaved money by staying out in Virginia somewhere
[09:12] Paulette Darkstone: we would give it away free if we had the money
[09:12] Thynka Little: saved*
[09:12] Chimera Cosmos: It was great to have the in-world view up on the wall in DC too.
[09:12] Chimera Cosmos: I was able to go in with Pocket Metaverse on my iPad. And Sicily went in on Android, right?
[09:12] Sicily Zapatero: Yes!
[09:13] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Paulette, before you ahve to go, can you give us some idea of what the government perspective on virtual worlds as a technology is lately? Who are the main interested agencies and departments?
[09:13] Chimera Cosmos: Mixed mixed reality. heheh
[09:13] Sicily Zapatero: Bilocation!
[09:13] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I presume DOD, NASA, Smithsonian?
[09:13] Paulette Darkstone: THis is the first year I have reason to hope
[09:13] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): NOAA?
[09:13] Thynka Little: Woud be nice to have teleportation from the hotels enabled. Traffic there is wicked!
[09:13] Rhiannon Chatnoir: having organized events such as SLCC, can completely understand the costs associated with hosting a immersive physical and virtual event simultaneously
[09:13] Paulette Darkstone: The DoD Virtual Worlds Framework shows promise if we can get it hosted in a non-profit for open source deveopment
[09:14] Sarvana Haalan: Had a bit of difficult getting in-world…
[09:14] Chimera Cosmos: I really appreciate the low admission price. So many conferences are just out of sight.
[09:14] Chimera Cosmos: Hi Sally/Sarvana!
[09:14] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): The metro rail system in DC is awesome…
[09:14] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (DoD is “department of defense” btw)
[09:14] Paulette Darkstone: The NTER Project in DOE is promising for across goverment
[09:14] Sicily Zapatero: Cost was truly reasonable.
[09:14] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): … if you’re looking to avoid the traffic.
[09:14] Glitteractica Cookie: We have someone from the DOD in our 11am meeting today, if you give me speficis, i supose i could ask if he knows anyone doing VW work
[09:14] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): focus, people, focus….
[09:14] Thynka Little: The food was super good.
[09:14] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): http://virtualworldframework.com/web/about.html
[09:14] Chimera Cosmos: I took the metro and then bus from Waterfront both days.
[09:14] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): btrw
[09:15] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): standards based virtual worlds in your web browser
[09:15] GuruTapas.comFREEsites4Authors (lisaschaefer.ruby): I live on the orange line, so the walk from L’Enfant Plaza was pleasant
[09:15] Glitteractica Cookie: where was the physicallocation of te conf again?
[09:16] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (please can we talk about the DC metro later)
[09:16] Zinnia Zauber: I believe that it meant so much to all of us who were there in person to have you guys join us.
[09:16] Thynka Little: National Defense University
[09:16] Paulette Darkstone: We are discussing it and will have to group get back to the grou
[09:16] Paulette Darkstone: group
[09:16] Sicily Zapatero: This was my second year attending. I enjoyed it immensely.
[09:17] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Paulette, Do you think we could see more synchronous interaction built in for virtual attendees in the future?
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: Paulette, do you feel the theme was “We are all in this together”
[09:17] Paulette Darkstone: next year and conferences govt wide are being closely controlled because of GSA scandal
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’m sure
[09:17] Paulette Darkstone: that has always been the direction of the group
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so a low cost mixed reality conference might be MORE attractive
[09:17] Paulette Darkstone: this year the theme was convergence
[09:17] Thynka Little: attendance in world seemed quite good
[09:17] Zinnia Zauber: I really felt that we need to support each other and cheer on as a whole.
[09:18] Paulette Darkstone: we have a mixed reality conference now 🙂
[09:18] Paulette Darkstone: free to anyone online who wanted to participate
[09:18] Thynka Little: I loved following the SL chat from the auditorium
[09:18] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I mean for other government agencies like GSA
[09:18] Paulette Darkstone: took questions via twitter
[09:18] Paulette Darkstone: yes
[09:18] Sicily Zapatero: It is truly wonderful to be among so many who appreciate and utilize Virtual Worlds.
[09:18] Zinnia Zauber: It was really wonderful to see how we interacted in person and inworld.
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): While Paulette is here, is there anything else you would like to share with her about the conference she might like to know?
[09:19] Paulette Darkstone: we still have alot to learn
[09:19] Paulette Darkstone: thanks I would like to hear
[09:19] Glitteractica Cookie: I have to jump out to another TechSoup meeting, and so does Alebez, but we will see u all next week. Very interesting stuff abou tthis conference
[09:19] Paulette Darkstone: thanks
[09:19] Thynka Little: There should be a coffee spot closer to the auditorium
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): /me waves to glitter
[09:19] CarmenLittleFawn: bye Glitter
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Thynka, LOL
[09:19] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): bye Glitter
[09:19] Thynka Little: really!
[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): coffee at conferences is critical!
[09:20] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): fun photos btw 🙂
[09:20] Chimera Cosmos: Heh. It got us some exercise anyhow.
[09:20] Thynka Little: that building is really loooooong
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!
[09:20] Chimera Cosmos: Great to see you Paulette
[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Paulette for sharing with us!
[09:20] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you Paulette
[09:20] Paulette Darkstone: Thanks
[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): anything else on the organization of the conference?
[09:21] Buffy Beale: great info Paulette thanks
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Or should wemove on to some of the major items discussed?
[09:21] Thynka Little: can you replicate the poster session in world next time?
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’d love a text chat dump of relevant projects and links that we can look up later
[09:21] Paulette Darkstone: I am off to another meeting thanks for the input everyone
[09:21] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): take care Paulette 🙂
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Paulette!
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we’ll get back to you with the transcript paulette
[09:21] Thynka Little: bye Paulette!
[09:21] Zinnia Zauber: We will share with you as well!
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thanks so much for coming!
[09:22] GuruTapas.comFREEsites4Authors (lisaschaefer.ruby): Thanks for your talk, Paulette
[09:22] Buffy Beale: take care Paulette thanks
[09:22] Sicily Zapatero: /me waves to Paulette. Thank you!
[09:22] Paulette Darkstone: thanks everyone
[09:22] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): there are a lot of projects… have people seen the agenda, workshops, and posters?
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So who was physically there in DC for the event?
[09:22] Zinnia Zauber: Paulette and her staff were amazing.
[09:23] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): you may want to pick and choose what warrents discussion…
[09:23] GuruTapas.comFREEsites4Authors (lisaschaefer.ruby): I went to the event last year
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Zinnia, Sarvana, and Coughran, right?
[09:23] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I was
[09:23] Chimera Cosmos: Everyone who was in DC should come up here so we can match avatars to human avatars that we met. 🙂
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and ERic of course
[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Chimera
[09:23] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I have to move?
[09:23] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): laaaaazy
[09:23] Chimera Cosmos: I see quite a few more!
[09:23] Thynka Little: i ws
[09:23] Sicily Zapatero: Yes…Please join us up front!
[09:23] Chimera Cosmos: avatars don’t use many calories Eric
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yeah come on down
[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: We had 16 grads and students from the UW Virtual World Program.
[09:23] Chimera Cosmos: and Thynka
[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): zinnia, wow!
[09:24] Chimera Cosmos: and Sarvana
[09:24] Chimera Cosmos: and…
[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so what else did you guys want to share about the FCVW that we should know about?
[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I see these pretty pictures behind me
[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: Chimera, would you like to share first?
[09:24] Nany (nany.kayo): uh oh
[09:25] Chimera Cosmos: Do you have a specific question to address?
[09:25] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): you went to the video game exhibit — awesome
[09:25] Chimera Cosmos: So much went on!
[09:25] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I *highly* recommend it
[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I am absolutely dying to see that exhibit
[09:25] Chimera Cosmos: Yes, I did. At the Smithsonian American Museum of Art
[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): but is that relevant to us here today?
[09:25] Chimera Cosmos: And Jesse Schell, one of the keynote speakers, was featured prominently
[09:25] Chimera Cosmos: Zinnia saw it too the next day
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: He was one of my favorites.
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): who is that?
[09:26] Chimera Cosmos: Rik, what question would you like us to address?
[09:26] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I find the connection of gaming and virtual worlds highly relevant
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: Jesse Schell
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): what are the key things that people who weren’t there should know about
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, Eric!
[09:26] Gentle Heron: highly relevant, but sometimes misleading
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): i.e. projects launching, opportunities to know about, events coming up, people to check out, etc
[09:26] Zinnia Zauber: That is why they took my workshop.
[09:26] Chimera Cosmos: One is definitely the connection between gaming and education and non-profits and gov and all.
[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Authentic Avatar – Inspiring Trust with Your Virtual Identity
[09:27] Chimera Cosmos: And also the cognitive psychology area.
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): what is that?
[09:27] Thynka Little: A lot of virtual world things are happening out of the public eye
[09:27] Chimera Cosmos: Jim Blascovich, the co-author of Infinite Reality was one of the speakers.
[09:27] Thynka Little: esp in gov
[09:27] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): if folks are interested the White House launched a related initiative called the “Federal Games Guild” in November, there was a meeting the same time as the FCVW workshops
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): he’s good. we’ve had him here before
[09:27] Chimera Cosmos: He’s a cog psy prof from UC Santa Barbara I think.
[09:27] Gentle Heron: Chimera, please say more.
[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: So many of the speakers discussed the blend of real and inworld. All of it in our brains.
[09:28] Sicily Zapatero: I think there is sometimes a problem with semantics. We spend so much time explaining that what we do in Virtual Worlds is not just “a game”, so understanding that using gaming principles is enriching can be confusing to those not familiar with the envoronment
[09:28] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): +21 Sicily
[09:28] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): well plus 1, but the theory holds
[09:28] Gentle Heron: /me agrees with Sicily
[09:28] Chimera Cosmos: Jim’s co-author is Jeremy Bailenson, Stanford prof who did the experiments on the lasting effects of virtual experiences had by avatars on their human counterparts after they leave the virtual space.
[09:29] Chimera Cosmos: Agree with Sicily too. The interaction of gaming and psychology are also key.
[09:29] Chimera Cosmos: And how we learn in virtual worlds too. Using games and virtual spaces for learning was a key topic.
[09:29] CarmenLittleFawn: is very interesting I am sure of that on a psychological level
[09:29] Zinnia Zauber: We saw that in healthcare, education, and training.
[09:30] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): If you missed the conference entirely but are intrigued, there’s a Livestream video archive of most of the keynotes & panels here: http://www.livestream.com/ndustreampremium/video?clipId=pla_8cd15426-72f…
[09:30] Chimera Cosmos: Yes, the broad applications, with education and learning and community cutting across almost everything.
[09:30] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Who were some of the main government agencies and groups that are doing cool things to know about?
[09:30] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you Jerry
[09:30] Zinnia Zauber: Engagement and memory of our engagement.
[09:30] Chimera Cosmos: Yes, and if you google the speakers, you’ll find a ton of info.
[09:30] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And are there people we could invite to come speak here?
[09:31] Chimera Cosmos: Likely.
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’m asking you guys for your recommendations though, since you are here
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and I’m lazy. LOL.
[09:31] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): 🙂
[09:31] CarmenLittleFawn: lol
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: I think there are several people we would delight in inviting.
[09:31] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I think Doug Maxwell from DOD would be interesting on his work in OpenSim
[09:31] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Carmen, You’re welcome. There’s really good stuff in there. I’d highly recommend taking the time to check them out.
[09:32] Chimera Cosmos: And Coughran was on one of the panels, as you regulars likely know.
[09:32] Sicily Zapatero: Doug is wonderful to speak with and listen to
[09:32] Zinnia Zauber: yes
[09:32] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): the grid is called MOSES he also has another VW technology that is based in the Unreal Engine called EDGE
[09:32] CarmenLittleFawn: I will Thank you
[09:32] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I think we’ve hadpeople from MOSES here already
[09:32] Chimera Cosmos: Yes, and Pam Broviak was there.
[09:32] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and possibly Doug
[09:33] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): Daniel Laughlin from NASA and his work with Moonbase Alpha and the new MMO they are working on would be fun
[09:33] Zinnia Zauber: Don’t you feel like there was a message of hope, like Paulette said.
[09:33] Chimera Cosmos: Kay McClennan. She works on her own Tulane grid and also with MOSES
[09:33] Chimera Cosmos: She was on a panel.
[09:33] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): FYI, Moonbase Alpha is a game that can be downloaded via STEAM for PC and Mac users
[09:33] Chimera Cosmos: Kay is her RL name though…trying to remember avatar name…
[09:33] Ozma Malibu: And MOSES has changed a lot, hasn’t it? So an update would be great.
[09:33] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I’d be happy to share what we are up to… but that feels like self appointment 🙂
[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: Wonderful Eric!
[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: Book him, Dano!
[09:34] Gentle Heron: /me would nominate Eric if he feels shy (which I doubt)
[09:34] Chimera Cosmos: MOSES has an impressive mix of backgrounds of participants.
[09:34] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you would like to attend more events like this inworld?
[09:35] Buffy Beale: I would
[09:35] Robo Mirabella: Moi!
[09:35] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Definitely!
[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you think being in person is important?
[09:35] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): Tami Griffith should come talk about the Federal Virtual World Challenge
[09:35] CarmenLittleFawn: I would also
[09:35] Zinnia Zauber: Great idea!
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): DougMaxwell spokelast september
[09:35] Buffy Beale: I don’t think it’s as important although I miss the free coffee 🙂
[09:35] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): ah figures 🙂
[09:35] Chimera Cosmos: I think it’s great if you can. It enhances the virtual connection, but the virtual is more practical in the long run.
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Tami is great
[09:36] Zinnia Zauber: That seemed to be a discussion as well, that mix of both.
[09:36] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Being in person is good too… but with telepresence tech that’s already in place we could have some of the best of both.
[09:36] Rhiannon Chatnoir: I think there is always something magical to meeting someone in physical space that have collaborated with or know virtually
[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: How many of you have met your virtual peeps?
[09:37] CarmenLittleFawn: 🙂
[09:37] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): Elizabeth McKenna could talk about vGov
[09:37] Rhiannon Chatnoir: /me raises hand
[09:37] CarmenLittleFawn: not me yes
[09:37] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): ok, I’m done now
[09:37] Chimera Cosmos: I like meeting in person, especially when I already know the avatar. Using telepresence for my RL person is not my favorite thing though. heheh
[09:37] Sicily Zapatero: Meeting others in the physical world after having met and worked with them inworld, is a true testament to the validity of virtual trust
[09:37] CarmenLittleFawn: yet*
[09:37] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Would have been fun to sit down to lunch or coffee talk with some of the attendees on site via a google hangout session for example…
[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: You have a great list, Eric. Thank you!
[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: Right, trust.
[09:37] Zinnia Zauber: That was also a theme of the event.
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Eric you rock thanks
[09:37] Rhiannon Chatnoir: I have met quite a few of the avatars here at this meeting at one event or another 🙂
[09:37] Chimera Cosmos: Yes Sicily, exactly. You already know each other just as well as meeting in person.
[09:37] Thynka Little: i like that idea Jerry!
[09:38] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Thynka, Me too… would really bridge the experience.
[09:38] Zinnia Zauber: There was that balance of open and need to be sure.
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Soyeah anything wecan do to bridge what is happening in the government world and the nonprofit world I think is of mutual benefit
[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: I got to meet people that I have been working with for 4+ years for the first time.
[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: I encourage, if possible, to meet people.
[09:39] Chimera Cosmos: There were a number of attendees in DC who would not have come if it was only virtual, and I think there is great value in introducing them to the idea of using VWs in that way.
[09:39] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): What is the most exciting area being worked on related to virtual worlds right now, in your opinion?
[09:39] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Thynka, From my experience of the discussions that happened inworld, the virtual participants would have a great deal to contribute to the interactions & discussions if given more opportunity.
[09:39] Zinnia Zauber: To build bonds in other social media as well.
[09:39] Sicily Zapatero: Convergence!
[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: We need to connect in all spaces.
[09:40] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Zinnia, Yes, I don’t see the issue as either/or.
[09:40] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): I’m excited to see the use of game mechanics and technologies in virtual world applications
[09:40] Thynka Little: I think we need to laugh more. I’d like to see Paulette add a VW Bloopers storytelling event during the social hour
[09:40] Chimera Cosmos: Yes, about half of my Facebook friends are avatars, and there is a lot of communication that goes on there.
[09:40] Zinnia Zauber: Yes, more engagement.
[09:40] Chimera Cosmos: And twitter too.
[09:41] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yes
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): any last comments about FCVW before we move on?
[09:41] Zinnia Zauber: I just want to say, thank you for this chance to share with you all.
[09:41] Chimera Cosmos: Yes, the person running SL clearly was not experienced in terms of helping to bring the avatars into the conversation — or even into view at times!
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): here’s the URL btw www.ndu.edu/icollege/fcvw/index.htm
[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: Thank you Zinnia
[09:42] Chimera Cosmos: But that was partly from a shortage of people to do things I expect.
[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: I am pleased that you could join us there and inworld.
[09:42] Chimera Cosmos: All were multitasking.
[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: The connections we make are bonds that build communities that will change the world.
[09:42] CarmenLittleFawn: 🙂
[09:42] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yes it takes a lot of manpower to run an event.. and having a real and virtual combined event in essence doubles your attentions of what needs to be happening
[09:42] Chimera Cosmos: Great photos Zinnia
[09:42] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you for being part of it all!
[09:42] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thanks Zinnia, Chimera, Sicily, Eric and others for helping fill in those of use who weren’t able to attend FCVWs
[09:43] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): It was a great experience to attend virtually and be able to discuss the various topics with other folks inworld. Would highly recommend the experience.
[09:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): if there are other links to cool projects and people, feel free to share later
[09:43] Zinnia Zauber: We have lots of pros in our NPC community.

OPEN MIC ANNOUNCEMENTS

[09:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Ok lets move on to our final agenda item: Open Mic
[09:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): who has announcements for the community? Indicate it in the chat and I’ll call on you
[09:44] Buffy Beale: thanks for all the info on the conference sounds like a not-to-be-missed event
[09:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): for sure
[09:44] Gentle Heron: Thanks everyone for sharing about this larger community.
[09:45] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): super helpful thanks
[09:45] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): any announcements?
[09:45] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Raises Hand
[09:45] CarmenLittleFawn: really enjoyed it
[09:45] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Go ahead Jen
[09:45] Jen (jenelle.levenque): TAVA is looking for a webmaster to rework our site. If anyone is interested please contact me inworld or treasurer@tavausa.org
[09:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): very good. Web gurus take note.
[09:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Anyone else?
[09:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Going once….
[09:46] Buffy Beale: A comment
[09:46] Buffy Beale: 🙂
[09:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): go buffy
[09:46] Buffy Beale: SL9B is coming up so we need to think about our NPC booth http://sl9b.wordpress.com/
[09:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): what is the date?
[09:47] Buffy Beale: maybe we can talk about that at the mentors
[09:47] Buffy Beale: applications close June 3
[09:47] Par (parhelion.palou): It’s a privately run event this year … no Linden involvement
[09:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yeah I heard
[09:47] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): facinating…
[09:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): not sure how I feel about it
[09:47] Par (parhelion.palou): Lindens have pretty much left the building
[09:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Its good in some ways
[09:48] Buffy Beale: I thought it was good exposure for the NPC but it takes work to build the exhibit, which Zinnia and Brena have done in the past
[09:48] Gentle Heron: I think the question is: Is NPC part of the broader SL community? That’s how my Board looks at participation in SL9B this year. We’re part of SL, so we should participate.
[09:48] Buffy Beale: and no doubt Par had his hand in it 🙂
[09:48] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): You know those stories where renters get kicked out of their apartments because the landlord didn’t pay the mortage? I feel that way every time I log into SL.
[09:49] Gentle Heron: /me is sorry you feel that way, Eric. Perhaps it’s time to run this place as a co-op.
[09:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): its important to try and take part, even if in a limited wa
[09:49] Zinnia Zauber: I think we need to know what our message is and if we have time.
[09:49] Eric Hackathorn (hackshaven.harford): agreed Rik. It’s great to see this community.
[09:50] Zinnia Zauber: Because there isn’t a theme, we have created those books and I thought that would be a starting point.
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): okay we can talk more at mentors about this
[09:50] Chimera Cosmos: Gentle, your community is very much at the heart of the core SL community. For sure.
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I believe Gentle has another announcement
[09:50] Gentle Heron: Very quickly. For those who attended the intro session, Elric Anatine will do an advanced use of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Saturday at 2pm SLT. IM me for details if interested. (done)
[09:50] Chimera Cosmos: It brings people together, just like NPC does. Keeping those interactions going is so important.
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): nice thanks
[09:51] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ok we should close the meeting for today then.
[09:51] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yes there are a myriad of amazing communities here in SL, and some of those crossover into other platforms.. lots to learn and share all around
[09:51] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Thanks everyone for coming. Thanks especially for Paulette from FCVW and those of you who wre there to share your insights.
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We’ll post the transcxript from thismeeting to nonprofitcommons.org soon.
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Incase you missed anything.
[09:52] Robo Mirabella: thanks – wonderfl session!!
[09:52] Buffy Beale: thanks Rik and all
[09:52] Thynka Little: Thanks Rik
[09:52] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): thanks Rik
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We’re done here . Have a great friday folks
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Mentors meeting soon to follow.

Jeff Elder of Storify at Next Online Community MeetUp on Wednesday May 23!

You don’t want to miss the next OC Tribe meetup featuring Storify!

On May 23, the next Online Community Meetup will take place, in San Francisco at the headquarters of TechSoup, and in the virtual world of Second Life at the Nonprofit Commons. The featured guest this month is  Jeff Elder, Marketing Director at Storify, who will talk about, “What To Do When Your Community Wants To Kill You.”

Whether you work for a startup, a nonprofit, or a Fortune 500, social media can be a volatile place. Elder has weathered 20,000 negative comments in one day on Facebook and turned that same campaign into a huge success. Here’s how to face down the angry crowd, fire a gun into the air and yell, “All right you animals, that’s enough!”

To participate, teleport to the Nonprofit Commons on Wednesday May 23, starting at 7pm Pacific Time.  See you then!
