The second speaker today was Caledonia Heron, a NASA information architect. NASA eEd recently established
a staffed Education Resource Center in the main building on the island. The
ERC provides educational support for teaching about NASA content in the
classroom or after-school. Ms. Heron will speak about the ERC and the
activities and events available at the NASA island. Learning Technologies is an education incubator for instructional technologies and the team manages NASA eEducation Island.

(Just transcribed this because Caledonia’s grammar was perfect already)

NASA has been in Second Life since 2006
and got a dedicated Education island in 2008. NASA has a significant
investment in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math
education.) This is part of NASA’s positive mission
to improve education for students and citizen scientists. NASA invests in
education to provide STEM career paths for upcoming students and a pipeline
to NASA employment. The agency has dedicated time and
capital to develop print, online and in person resources and activities.
There are education assets for all learners, K-Grey. They want to encourage the youngest to
the oldest to have an understanding of science and have the skills to
contribute in those areas through their careers and/or private interests.

NASA’s island is setup to represent NASA’s work on earth, in orbit and in exploration. The land area has a number of space analog activities such as NEEMO, Antarctica and a rover yard.
This is to prepare for the challenge of
exploring remote destinations in space, NASA conducts “analog” missions here on Earth, in remote locations that have physical similarities to extreme

Third Speaker – RedGoddess

The G.I.R.L.S. Project connects our voices and resources to create social
change in our communities. It is to create a comfortable space for girls to
express themselves, learn leadership skills, and make allies.
Young women have a chance to
speak out and be heard, to learn from their peers, and to formulate
solutions to the problems in their lives. The programs are designed to
engage, educate, and prepare young women to be effective leaders and media
makers. The organization is based in Boston but its work is done all over. Girls 14-17 are the most encouraged to join, but any teen can do so.This lets young women be trained to be leaders in their communities.

into SL
[2011/06/24 08:49] Buffy Beale: claps for Caledonia!
[2011/06/24 08:49] Video.HelpWAHMsWIN.com (tuty.inkpen): No solid plans,
yet.
[2011/06/24 08:49] BETF Afterthought: Sarvana… I know you like me.. but
um… you don’t have to sit on me. 😛
[2011/06/24 08:49] page Putzo: lol
[2011/06/24 08:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Many of your know Caledonia
Heron already I think
[2011/06/24 08:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): She is the Caledonia Heron,
an information architect with the NASA Learning Technologies program.
[2011/06/24 08:49] Caledonia Heron: Hi,

[2011/06/24 08:50] Buffy Beale: Welcome Caledonia
[2011/06/24 08:50] Caledonia Heron: thank you – what a great group 🙂
[2011/06/24 08:50] Caledonia Heron: I like it here
[2011/06/24 08:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): NASA eEd recently established
a staffed Education Resource Center in the main building on the island. The
ERC provides educational support for teaching about NASA content in the
classroom or after-school. Ms. Heron will speak about the ERC and the
activities and events available at the NASA island.
[2011/06/24 08:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): let’s all welcome Caledonia
to the NPC (again)
[2011/06/24 08:50] Caledonia Heron: Thanks for coming to this discussion

[2011/06/24 08:52] Buffy Beale: hi there Salamanca
[2011/06/24 08:52] Salamanca Congrejo: hiya
[2011/06/24 08:52] Caledonia Heron: Feel free to ask questions at any time.
Rik, if you could help me catch them in text that would be great. Sometimes
I’m typing like crazy and can miss text going by. ☺
[2011/06/24 08:53] Salamanca Congrejo: call me Sal 😉
[2011/06/24 08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): will do
[2011/06/24 08:53] Caledonia Heron: a little background…
[2011/06/24 08:53] Caledonia Heron: NASA has been in Second Life since 2006
and got a dedicated Education island in 2008. NASA has a significant
investment in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math
education.)
[2011/06/24 08:53] Caledonia Heron: This is part of NASA’s positive mission
to improve education for students and citizen scientists. NASA invests in
education to provide STEM career paths for upcoming students and a pipeline
to NASA employment.
[2011/06/24 08:53] Sarvana Haalan: no one has rez in yet
[2011/06/24 08:54] Caledonia Heron: behind me are some slides of our island
so you can get a sense of what it’sl ike before you visit
[2011/06/24 08:54] Caledonia Heron: there’s an info kiosk to my right with
a tourcard
[2011/06/24 08:54] Caledonia Heron: The agency has dedicated time and
capital to develop print, online and in person resources and activities.
There are education assets for all learners, K-Grey. ☺
[2011/06/24 08:55] Caledonia Heron: We want to encourage the youngest to
the oldest to have an understanding of science and have the skills to
contribute in those areas through their careers and/or private interests.
[2011/06/24 08:55] Caledonia Heron: In SL, NASA eEducation island is a
place for the agency to represent our resources from the NASA Education
Portfolio.
[2011/06/24 08:55] Caledonia Heron: You can find lots of RL resources
online at the nasa.gov site.

http://www.nasa.gov/education/
[2011/06/24 08:55] Caledonia Heron: Our island is setup to represent NASA’s
work on earth, in orbit and in exploration. The land area has a number of
space analog activities such as NEEMO, Antarctica and a rover yard.
[2011/06/24 08:56] Caledonia Heron: To prepare for the challenge of
exploring remote destinations in space, NASA conducts “analog” missions here
on Earth, in remote locations that have physical similarities to extreme
space environments.
[2011/06/24 08:56] Caledonia Heron: You can find info at nasa.gov and…
[2011/06/24 08:56] Caledonia Heron: You can search for specific teaching
materials at
http://search.nasa.gov/search/edFilterSearch.jsp?empty=true
[2011/06/24 08:56] Salamanca Congrejo: or on Google 😉
[2011/06/24 08:57] Caledonia Heron: Re analogs: For example NEEMO (NASA
Extreme Environment Mission Operations) is an underwater sea laboratory off
the coast of Key Largo.
[2011/06/24 08:57] Caledonia Heron: lol, yes Sal for sure!
[2011/06/24 08:57] Caledonia Heron: We practice mission activities there as
an analog to being in space – researchers are in a small, remote location
and work underwater which can give a sense of weightlessness.
[2011/06/24 08:57] Caledonia Heron: We have a cute little rover there named
Scuttle. ☺
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/NEEMO/NEEMO12/mission_journal_4_prt
[2011/06/24 08:58] Caledonia Heron: You can visit our SL NEEMO on the west
side of the island – check the tour card LM you can get from the information
kiosk here on stage.
[2011/06/24 08:58] Caledonia Heron: We hold underwater events when there
are live research missions underway at NEEMO. Scuba gear optional. ☺
[2011/06/24 08:58] Caledonia Heron: Our rover yard on the NE side of the
island serves as an analog for the many robotic missions that the agency has
in operation.
[2011/06/24 08:58] Caledonia Heron: Here’s another example of one of our
events : We hosted a group in SL for a live interactive webcast from the
Black Rock Lava Flow in Arizona during last summer’s DRATS testing (Desert
RATS – or Research and Technology Studies) where 2 SEV rovers went out in
the field in simulated science mission.
[2011/06/24 08:59] Caledonia Heron: We were able to watch a segment of the
testing and interact with engineers using social media tools for Q&A.
[2011/06/24 08:59] Buffy Beale: wow
[2011/06/24 08:59] Caledonia Heron: You can get your own copy of the SEV
when you click on the info kiosk, select the “gifts” button.

(SEV – Space Exploration Vehicle) Lots of acronyms at NASA!!! ☺
[2011/06/24 08:59] Caledonia Heron: and more info….

[2011/06/24 09:00] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (we’ll be posting these links
later if you miss them)
[2011/06/24 09:00] Buffy Beale: would be fun to have a rover wandering
around the NPC
[2011/06/24 09:00] Caledonia Heron: We also have several earth science
interactives to learn about NASA’s earth observing work. You can ride a
raindrop through the water cycle or view aggregated earth observing data in
video at the Science on a Sphere.
[2011/06/24 09:00] Gentle Heron: I thought that was your role as rover,
Buffy.
[2011/06/24 09:00] Caledonia Heron: http://science1.nasa.gov/earth-science/

http://climate.nasa.gov/
[2011/06/24 09:00] Buffy Beale: ha!
[2011/06/24 09:00] Caledonia Heron: Our island sky is dedicated to orbital
and exploration missions. You can learn visit the Apollo moon landing, the
ISS, the Hubble and many others.
[2011/06/24 09:01] Caledonia Heron: Check your tourcard for places and
LM’s.
[2011/06/24 09:01] Hydra Shaftoe: I want my own Titan rover. I’d name it
Elvis, since we all know that Elvis went to live on Saturn
[2011/06/24 09:01] Caledonia Heron: In addition to the in-situ learning
environment we host a dedicated Education Resource Center in the Main
Building of the island.
[2011/06/24 09:01] Buffy Beale: I thought it was Mars Hydra
[2011/06/24 09:01] Caledonia Heron: This is what Rik blogged about and how
we met. 🙂
[2011/06/24 09:01] page Putzo: lol i thought he was dead
[2011/06/24 09:01] Caledonia Heron: We worked with the NASA Core, the
central repository for NASA ed materials, to place the most requested items
from our Ed portfolio within the SL ERC.
[2011/06/24 09:02] Buffy Beale: it’s so fascinating Caledonia, really shows
the value of SL having NASA here
[2011/06/24 09:02] Caledonia Heron: thanks Buffy 🙂
[2011/06/24 09:02] Video.HelpWAHMsWIN.com (tuty.inkpen): Can’t wait to show
this to the kids. They love exploring with us in SL (family friendly spots
only of course)
[2011/06/24 09:02] Caledonia Heron: Sal wrote about the ERC on SLED, Rik
came to visit and we met on the island… serendipitous 🙂
[2011/06/24 09:02] Caledonia Heron: CORE is the Central Operations of
Resources for Educators.
http://www.nasa.gov/offices/education/programs/national/core/home/ind
[2011/06/24 09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yeah SL is good for
serendipitousness
[2011/06/24 09:03] Buffy Beale: and now full circle having you present to
us Caledonia 🙂
[2011/06/24 09:03] Caledonia Heron: yep
[2011/06/24 09:03] Caledonia Heron: We hosts events, webcasts and contests
on the island. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or arrange for group
tours. Please contact me if you’d like a group tour. We frequently host NASA
scientists as guest speakers.
[2011/06/24 09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lol
[2011/06/24 09:03] Caledonia Heron: We’ve had climate scientists,
astrophysicists, a Nobel laureate, NASA administrators and many others give
talks.
[2011/06/24 09:03] Caledonia Heron: You can join the Welcome to NASA group
to get notices of events and activities.
[2011/06/24 09:03] Caledonia Heron: We’ll be hosting a shuttle launch event
in July. The first launch window for STS-135 is at 11:26 a.m. EDT on July 8
from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in
Florida.
[2011/06/24 09:03] Buffy Beale: do you livestream the launches?
[2011/06/24 09:03] Buffy Beale: oh

[2011/06/24 09:04] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): is taht the last one?
[2011/06/24 09:04] Caledonia Heron: If you can’t join us in SL you can
watch the launch at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/ustream.html
[2011/06/24 09:04] Caledonia Heron: yes
[2011/06/24 09:04] Troy McLuhan: Avatrian made a life-size 3D model and
simulation of the shuttle for the July 8 launch
[2011/06/24 09:04] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): aww that makes me so sad
[2011/06/24 09:04] Mila (milakel): is colab being funded by nasa?
[2011/06/24 09:04] Buffy Beale: I think this is the one my name goes up on
[2011/06/24 09:04] Video.HelpWAHMsWIN.com (tuty.inkpen): Caledonia, does
NASA do virtual field trips for schools, similar to what the National Parks
are doing?
[2011/06/24 09:04] page Putzo: cool
[2011/06/24 09:04] Caledonia Heron: Some local cable companies provide a
dedicated NASA channel. “Check your listings” ☺
[2011/06/24 09:04] Dali Waverider: Caledonia, do you have an SL gourp we

[2011/06/24 09:13] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): hugs:)
[2011/06/24 09:13] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): I came to SL to share and
expand my community work and passion about non-profits and social issues.
I’ve been doing this type of work since I was a teenager and was labeled an
“activist” before I knew the meaning of the word. This has become my life
purpose.
[2011/06/24 09:13] Devilana Nirvana: aww…sucha pleasure towork with you
[2011/06/24 09:13] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): you too devilana:)
[2011/06/24 09:13] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Let me tell you a little bit
about the GIRLS Project and our programs

Our motto is Voice * VIsion * Action
[2011/06/24 09:13] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): G.I.R.L.S. stands for
Growing Individuals Reacting to Life’s Struggles
[2011/06/24 09:14] Sarvana Haalan: awesome
[2011/06/24 09:14] Video.HelpWAHMsWIN.com (tuty.inkpen): love that
[2011/06/24 09:14] Mimi Muircastle: perfect!
[2011/06/24 09:14] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): A group of teen girls and
women came up with the acronym during our first set of meetings.
It is a fitting acronym as girls around the world continue to struggle to,
accept themselves, their bodies and to be seen as more than sex objects or
pretty face.
[2011/06/24 09:14] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): I wish I had more images but
will share another time
[2011/06/24 09:14] Mimi Muircastle: so true!
[2011/06/24 09:14] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): we have an awesome ning page
and a facebook page with photos
[2011/06/24 09:14] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): The mission of the
G.I.R.L.S. Project is to connect our voices and resources to create social
change in our communities. It is to create a comfortable space for girls to
express themselves, learn leadership skills, and make allies.
[2011/06/24 09:15] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Young women have a chance to
speak out and be heard, to learn from their peers, and to formulate
solutions to the problems in their lives. The programs are designed to
engage, educate, and prepare young women to be effective leaders and media
makers.
[2011/06/24 09:15] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Girls ages 14-17 can join
the organization and be part of all the programs. Although older teens can
remain involved beyond high school years.
[2011/06/24 09:15] Mimi Muircastle: so important
[2011/06/24 09:15] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): We’re based in Boston but
work is done and open to young women throughout the greater Boston area.
When the organization first started, we focused a great deal of our efforts
to educate various groups and adults about effective ways to listen and
share power with girls. We wanted young woman to be trained and recognized
as leaders in their community. Within the organization, our members,
including girls it is critical to build a sense of ownership. We make
decisions together and their input is what makes our organization unique.
[2011/06/24 09:16] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): From the outset, we’ve been
committed to challenge negative mainstream media images of young women and
women. We are bombarded with sexist and limiting views of what it means to
be a girl or female in this culture.
[2011/06/24 09:16] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): As much progress that has
been made, it is evident based real life experiences of girls and research
that we still have so much work to do to build girls’ sense of self and
perceptions about who they are, can be and become.
[2011/06/24 09:16] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): As the organization evolve,
we wanted to do more than criticize the media and offer workshops. It became
critical to create an alternative to MTV and the myriad of shows with women
in the shadow. This is how the idea of Girl TV was born.

We have three Signature Programs: Girl TV, Media Madness Girls’ Conference
& Talk! with Marie
[2011/06/24 09:17] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): lot to read:)
[2011/06/24 09:17] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Girl TV is a year-round
interactive live half hour talk show co-produced by members of the GIRLS
Project. It is broadcasted in Cambridge, MA but can be seen live and via our
channels online. The show promotes positive images of teens and awareness
about various issues and programs. Past topics include: teen dating
violence, earthquake in Haiti, girls in sports, sexual harassment, girls in
science, body image, eating disorders, teens in the arts, teen rallies for
change and more.
[2011/06/24 09:17] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Our send is the Girls
Conference
[2011/06/24 09:17] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Every year, we organize a
conference to bring girls together to share issues they’re facing in school,
connect with local leaders and learn about media. This is where girls are
also recruited to apply for Girl TV for the year.
[2011/06/24 09:18] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): We’ve been successful at
bringing girls together and ensuring their voices and issues matter. But
more importantly that young women are at the table when decisions that will
affect them, are at the table to contribute.
[2011/06/24 09:18] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): We work with about 75-100
girls annually. Most come to us through the annual GIRLS Conference, local
schools and the television program. Throughout the year, 8-10 girls are part
of the Girl TV crew and leadership programs. Typically girls enter our
programs in 9th grade and stay till they graduate high school.
[2011/06/24 09:18] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Some good news!
[2011/06/24 09:18] Buffy Beale: yay!
[2011/06/24 09:18] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): More than 90% of our members
graduate high school and attend a four year college. Girls have gone to MIT,
Harvard, Colby, Wellesley, Simmons, Culinary Institute of America, Stanford
to name a few. A few are now in graduate school in various fields such as
education, science, international relations, journalism and law. By most
standards, this is great!
[2011/06/24 09:18] Caledonia Heron: wow
[2011/06/24 09:18] Mimi Muircastle: wow! very impressive
[2011/06/24 09:19] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): We measure our success by
the number of girls who become self-defined critical thinkers, media
literate and leaders during and after the program.

Success to us is when girls realize they don’t have to do as they’re told
or stay in one lane defined by society.

Success is when they can share with their peers why they rather produce a
socially conscious video, be creative vs becoming a video vixen or america’s
next top model.
[2011/06/24 09:19] page Putzo: very
[2011/06/24 09:19] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Each group of girls redefine
success based on their journey and experience in the program.

As an organization with a focus on leadership, technology and new media, SL
seems a natural platform to explore and fully participate in.
[2011/06/24 09:19] Mimi Muircastle: your definition of success is awesome
[2011/06/24 09:19] Archivist Llewellyn: Good points, talkwithmarie. Sounds
like a great project! Are you doing things with promoting science,
technology, engineering fields for girls?
[2011/06/24 09:19] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): So what do we plan to do in
SL through NPC and other partnerships?
[2011/06/24 09:19] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Right now, our main goal is
to have a strong presence in SL and collaborate with individuals and other
orgs.
[2011/06/24 09:20] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): 2. Share our locally
produced shows and programs with the virtual community

Promoting NPC organizations and broadcast in SL

*One of our big goal is to have an sly crew and conduct interviews in SL*
[2011/06/24 09:20] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): ex. This week, I interviewed
Brique from Live and Learn in Kenya about their work. Check out the video on
youtube or my profile.
[2011/06/24 09:20] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): 3. Host seasonal events and
programs that will highlight issues that are close to our mission. For
example, showcase films, videos, books and speakers who will expose whats
going on with girls globally
[2011/06/24 09:20] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): 4. Showcase creative
campaigns and exhibits to complement our signature programs

For example, every year we focus on a specific theme for the conference. We
can go beyond the one day conference training, by building an on-going
campaign around the theme.
[2011/06/24 09:20] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): 5. Expand to other
communities outside of greater Boston
Are there other communities who would like to have a Girl TV club or
chapter to work on a specific project?
[2011/06/24 09:21] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): What girls and young women
(high school and older) can work on is limitless. We need to break the
boundaries that girls typically face in many settings from homes, schools to
dare them to dream and define who they are-one girl at a time.
[2011/06/24 09:21] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): Its not enough to say to
girls can be anything, we need to provide relevant tools such as media to
expose them to their peers who are doing positive things and women who have
made it in spite of struggles.
[2011/06/24 09:21] page Putzo: i love the good examples those are so
important in any work
[2011/06/24 09:21] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): In essence, the GIRLS
Project is a movement that put girls’ voices and issues at the center. We
grow with each generation of girls who come through our programs. SL is
simply the new frontier.
[2011/06/24 09:22] Video.HelpWAHMsWIN.com (tuty.inkpen): Love this Marie.
Need to interview you for an upcoming blogtalk show … will im you
[2011/06/24 09:22] RedGoddess (talkwithmarie): ty:) Page

conference, coordinate on-going programs in SL and of course fundraising.

simultaneously if we can get enough equipment together
[2011/06/24 09:31] Hydra Shaftoe: yeah just depends on bandwidth.
[2011/06/24 09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so think about what you might
like to bring to SLCC from your group, what projects you might like to
highlight, and what you might like to get out of SLCC
[2011/06/24 09:31] Hydra Shaftoe: hopefully we’ll have plenty
