[08:42] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/AFfD7a
[08:42] bulaklak: And check out the slide shows on Flickr
[08:42] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/ypk5bb

[08:43] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): its a really fun party!
[08:43] bulaklak: We also have a new episode of Nonprofits Live coming up on March 21
[08:43] bulaklak: Hosted as always by Inkenzo, who you just may know =)

[08:44] Glitteractica Cookie: Nonprofits Live is our interactive webinar series hosted by In Kenzo!
[08:44] bulaklak: Please RSVP and learn more about that event here
[08:44] Glitteractica Cookie: (grbabing link)
[08:44] bulaklak: http://bit.ly/FO5lAm
[08:44] Glitteractica Cookie: there we go
[08:44] bulaklak: And lastly, I want to let you know about an event coming up in San Francisco that should be pretty cool
[08:46] bulaklak: ISIS is hosting its first ever hack-a-thon, together with TechSoup.. A hack-a-thon is a live event bringing together developers, designers, innovators and entrepreneurs to build exciting new apps and tools, in this case to improve young people’s health and wellness. This short and focused event – 1 day only – will result in the rapid development of interesting concepts and working prototypes that will be developed further by the participating teams back at their desks and at future hack-a-thon events, with ISIS and TechSoup as partners for future product
[08:46] bulaklak: Sorry about that – machine is running a little slow today!
[08:46] bulaklak: And here’s the link
[08:46] Second Life: Trill Zapatero is online.
[08:46] bulaklak: http://sextech.org/hackathon
[08:46] bulaklak: This is on March 31. Please check it out!
[08:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’ll be there!
[08:47] bulaklak: Yep, and Stargrrl will be there and Alebez, too.
[08:47] bulaklak: So that’s what I’ve got for today!
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: And me
[08:47] bulaklak: Looking forward to today’s talk.
[08:47] bulaklak: And Glitter
[08:47] Glitteractica Cookie: Um, don’t forget Glitter
[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: sheesh!
[08:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): going to be a fun day
[08:48] Glitteractica Cookie: 😉
[08:48] bulaklak: =)
[08:48] Ricken Flow: is there any online presentations/streaming for the hack a thon?
[08:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thanks bulaklaklaklaklak
[08:48] Buffy Beale: lol Bulaklak don’t forget your boss
[08:48] bulaklak: lol Buffy
[08:48] bulaklak: Good question Ricken
[08:48] bulaklak: I will look into that and announce next week!
[08:49] Ricken Flow: thank you
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: We could probably arrange that
[08:49] bulaklak: At the very least, Alebez will be taking video clips and writing it up
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: Bulaklak, talk to Alebez and let’s try to make that happen
[08:49] bulaklak: Will do
[08:49] Glitteractica Cookie: she could also live stream bts from her flipvid
[08:49] bulaklak: great idea
[08:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): great. any other questions?
[08:50] Brena Benoir: Live stream would defintiely allow some to participate that are working with or targeting youth and healthcare issues
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: We will check into it
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: it may be too chaotic, since it’s a live hackathon event
[08:50] Glitteractica Cookie: but the TSDIGS party will definitely be livestreamed!
[08:51] bulaklak: With a drive in theater!
[08:51] stargrrl: Hope all of you will join us. It’s going to be a fun night.
[08:52] Ricken Flow: live hiv education and youth looks around for Chayenne
[08:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): IM a hackathon is going t overy hard to vieo stream, and probably frustrating to watch
[08:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): since its going to be lots of people working in small groups on different apps
[08:52] Chayenn: what do u mean?
[08:52] bulaklak: Yes, but rest assured all the solutions arrived at will be published and recapped!
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): that’s my experience of how hackathons typically go.
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But maybe there is a presentation at the beginning and end that might be good to stream?
[08:53] Glitteractica Cookie: ok, so maybe we won’t livestream but will post the video recaps later
[08:54] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Regarding the TS Digs drive-in, this is one of teh biggest draws to the NPC of the year
[08:54] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So we are counting on each of you to spread the word to all of your constituents and netowrks
[08:55] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Please grabe the invite from the Google list, nonprofitcommons.org or the group invite
[08:55] bulaklak: I’m really looking forward to hearing some of our eloquent judges talk, and seeing some of those really excellent submissions projected!
[08:55] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): for sure
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Okay well we should move on….
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Typically we would have Mentors Central at this time
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): But most of our mentors are at VWBPE today
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so we gave them a day off
[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): 🙂
[08:56] bulaklak: Will they fill us in on the conference next week?
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So that gives us more time to talk with our featured guest
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Bulaklak, I hope so
[08:57] Glitteractica Cookie: me too
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’m sure we’ll have a lot of recaps next week
[08:57] bulaklak: cool

FACEBOOK TIMELINE FOR ORGANIZATIONS

[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Right now let me introduce stargrrl, aka Susan Chavez, social media for nonprofits expert
[08:58] stargrrl: Hi everyone! Happy to be here.
[08:58] Glitteractica Cookie: Hi Star
[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We invited her toda to give us all an update on upcoming changes to FaceBook that may impact our nonprofits
[08:58] bulaklak: Hi, Star!
[08:58] Buffy Beale: yay Star 🙂
[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): take it away miss Stargrrl
[08:59] Glitteractica Cookie: She’s a Star!
[08:59] stargrrl: Thanks, Rik.
[09:00] stargrrl: So we’re half way through March so this is a good time to talk about the changes coming to Facebook since they will become the norm once the month ends.
[09:00] stargrrl: The updates to Facebook brand pages mark one of the biggest overhauls since Facebook created brand pages.
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): What groups here today have a Facebook page for your nonprofit?
[09:01] Jen (jenelle.levenque): raises hand
[09:01] Glitteractica Cookie: techsoup
[09:01] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): betterverse
[09:01] Namaara MacMoragh: we do, too… myself and all of my clients
[09:02] bulaklak: yup, TechSoup
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: but you all knew that, and if you haven’t already done so , plz LIKE us!
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): oh and Yehoodi
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: doesn’t NPC?
[09:02] bulaklak: http://www.facebook.com/TechSoupGlobal
[09:02] stargrrl: Yes, please do “like” us if you haven’t already. 🙂
[09:02] Ricken Flow: I do
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yes NPC too of course
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: duh
[09:02] bulaklak: http://www.facebook.com/nonprofitcommons
[09:02] Glitteractica Cookie: thx
[09:03] Glitteractica Cookie: That one needs a new banner image too
[09:03] bulaklak: true
[09:04] stargrrl: Speaking of which, the one change that I’m really excited about is the new banner image for pages.
[09:04] Buffy Beale: Bridges for Women do
[09:05] stargrrl: I think the banner is a great place for nonprofits to tell their digital story on Facebook
[09:06] stargrrl: FYI, the dimensions of the banner image are 851×351 pixels
[09:07] stargrrl: Beth Kanter has a Pinterest board with some great examples of nonprofits using powerful photos in the new Timeline layout
[09:07] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): of course she does!
[09:07] Glitteractica Cookie: ooh, do you have the link to that handy?
[09:08] Glitteractica Cookie: if not, i’ll get it later
[09:08] stargrrl: here’s the link: https://pinterest.com/kanter/facebook-cover-images/
[09:08] Glitteractica Cookie: thx
[09:09] stargrrl: Also, it’s worth mentioning that Facebook has some “don’ts” surrounding cover images that aren’t getting a lot of discussion
[09:10] stargrrl: The most important one is that it’s against Facebook’s Terms of Service to use text on your banner images
[09:10] stargrrl: So if you were thinking of using the banner image for making a call-to-action, you’ll need to try another approach
[09:12] stargrrl: The large banner is also meant to replace applications that are meant to serve as custom landing pages, so that’s out too
[09:12] Glitteractica Cookie: oh, so there will be no more custom landing pages?
[09:12] stargrrl: Since you can’t customize your landing page anymore, you really need to put some thought into the image you’ll be using on your page
[09:13] Glitteractica Cookie: doe this mean that the third party campign apps will no longer work?
[09:14] stargrrl: They will work but not as landing pages. Admins can no longer set another tab or app as the default place viewers see when they get to a Facebook page
[09:14] Ricken Flow: that is a bummer so you cant have the name of your org on the banner for your page 🙁
[09:15] bulaklak: Actually text is okay, it’s just certain types of text that are forbidden
[09:15] bulaklak: A. Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.
B. Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.
C. References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
D. Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.
[09:15] stargrrl: Yes, thanks for clarifying
[09:16] bulaklak: So Ricken you could have your org name, just not website address
[09:16] stargrrl: Pages will have a larger thumbnail area for their logos that will be placed in front of the banner image so it’s not entirely a loss
[09:16] DJ Earnshaw: why would they do something that stupid, other than that they can
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I also wonder how that will be enforced?
[09:19] stargrrl: I’m not sure how they’ll manage to enforce that on every page but given that their Customer Support isn’t very responsive, I would caution organization’s to err on the side of caution
[09:20] bulaklak: Nancy Schwartz talks about it in this guest post on Beth’s blog. http://www.bethkanter.org/message-it/
[09:20] bulaklak: She shows examples of text that is okay to use vs. text that is more iffy
[09:20] stargrrl: Thanks for link
[09:20] bulaklak: Sure!
[09:21] stargrrl: Also, in other app news – apps will no longer be listed on the left-hand navingation area. They’ll now be featured under the banner image
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Should groups fill in the Timeline history with their orgs history or activities and achievements?
[09:23] stargrrl: Absolutely!
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): sounds time consuming but possibly valuable
[09:24] stargrrl: It’s pretty neat the organizations can mark milestones such as when they were founded.
[09:24] bulaklak: John Haydon made a good point, too, about filling in the history of your org’s cause, as well
[09:25] stargrrl: Another good idea for your Timeline
[09:25] bulaklak: So you can put in milestones related to breakthroughs and advancements in the history of whatever cause or population you support
[09:26] stargrrl: The other nice thing about milestones is that you can add photo and video to add a little more color to what you’re highlighting
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): could be great way to show growth too over time
[09:27] Buffy Beale: these are great tips!
[09:27] stargrrl: Yes, show your organization’s evolution into what it is today.
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): An other questions for Stargrrl about how to use FB effectively for your org?
[09:28] Glitteractica Cookie: What is yr favorite nonprofit FB pg?
[09:28] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ooo good one
[09:29] stargrrl: I really like what Charity: Water has done using the new Timeline format
[09:30] stargrrl: Surfrider’s page is also good
[09:30] Buffy Beale: Question: Is there a page or two you can suggest for Nonprofits to follow?
[09:30] CarynTopia Silvercloud: what about having an event like a movie showing from the page?
[09:31] Buffy Beale: besides TechSoup 🙂
[09:31] stargrrl: I think the two I listed above are good examples of organizations making the most of Facebook Timeline
[09:31] Hour Destiny: I take it Facebook isn’t very interested in getting feedback from the nonprofity community.
[09:32] stargrrl: Also, outside of the nonprofit world, I like how the New York Times is using Timeline to show milestones in their newspaper’s history
[09:33] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thats pretty cool
[09:33] stargrrl: Facebook hasn’t done much as far as changes to video sharing, most of the changes are focused on the look of pages and providing administrators with a bigger toolkit to manage their pages
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (We’ll actually be streaming the TSDigs Awards Ceremony into Facebook as well as SL
[09:36] stargrrl: The changes to pages are coming whether any of us like it or not and at least this time I have to give Facebook credit for letting admins time to try out and preview the new features
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so we have 2 more weeks to get our timelines all pretty
[09:37] stargrrl: Yes, all pages will be changed to the Timeline format on March 30
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): stargrrl, what web links can you provide for people who want more info nd ideas?
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we already mentioned Beth Kanters blog
[09:37] stargrrl: Here’s a more thorough look at the new features: http://bit.ly/FOa59T
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): http://www.bethkanter.org/timelines-today/
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): great
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And how do people get a hold of you if they have further questions?
[09:39] stargrrl: You can find me on Twitter, @Susan_Chavez
[09:40] stargrrl: And you can also email me, and the awesome TechSoup team, at community@techsoup.org
[09:40] Glitteractica Cookie: she is also the author of many great blog posts on techsoup
[09:40] Glitteractica Cookie: incuding the one one timeline
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): awesome
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lets thank stargrrl for coming to the NPC to speak with us today
[09:41] CarynTopia Silvercloud: thanks!
[09:41] Red (talkwithmarie): ty stargrrl! awesome info:)

[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: You can go for it.
[08:49] Sarvana Haalan: About Me
Hello, I am Sarvana Haalan, SL avatar and “business partner” for a very real life person, Sally S. Cherry, MT(ASCP) based in Baltimore, MD. As an independent consultant and instructor, I work as a social media consultant and the Laboratory Consultant for the CDC-sponsored STD/HIV Prevention Training Center at Johns Hopkins located in Baltimore.

We have been involved with computer-based projects and internet marketing since 1996. We enjoy learning new technology related concepts and designing web-based projects. We both get excited about visiting, exploring, networking, and building within the virtual world communities. We started our virtual world explorations as a Metaplace beta tester in April 2009 while occasionally visiting Second Life.
[08:49] Sarvana Haalan: In my earlier years, I was a “lurker” because I was very intimidated by Second Life and some of its residents. So while living at the “Between Homes”, a cozy shelter for homeless avatars, I just visited various Second Life destinations and did my “networking” thing.
[08:50] Sarvana Haalan: A Bit of History
During our time in the 2D world of Metaplace, Sarvana became a very active community member and was selected as a featured creator in August 2009 (http://metaplace.posterous.com/metaplace-featured-creator-sarvana-read-t…). So when Metaplace closed down in January 2010, we migrated to Second Life with a small group of Metaplace friends and started to rebuild our various projects. Thus the rebirth of ‚ÄúReal to Virtual; Virtual to Real‚Äù in Second Life and later expanded into OpenSim.
[08:51] Sarvana Haalan: it was a major adjustment
[08:51] Sarvana Haalan: Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was my initial destination of interest, TechSoup’s Nonprofit Commons soon became my favorite community. It was here where Lizzette Zenovka invited me to my first virtual gala (Relay for Life) and I met Brena who invited me to a Thursday evening event. Both actions made me feel very welcome here… so I stayed and You are stuck with me… LOL, LOL.
[08:52] Sarvana Haalan: first impression do last!
[08:52] Brena Benoir: 🙂
[08:52] Sarvana Haalan: Seriously, the positive interaction lead me to want to get more involved in the in-world nonprofit community and to get local nonprofits involved in this amazing collaborative community. When the AIDS service organization where I worked as the Project Manager closed down, I decided to develop a social media capacity building program for nonprofits and business startups.
[08:52] DyVerse Jeffery-Steele (dyverse): I was a dj in metaplace dj’d there a couple of times and did presentation on hiv/aids
[08:53] Sarvana Haalan: cool
[08:53] Sarvana Haalan: I must acknowledge that I got much inspiration and encouragement from my participation in a 2009 Skills Building Institute for HIV Testing and Awareness Day Events and Campaigns: “Mobilized to Succeed” sponsored by AIDS.gov, POZ Magazine, and NAPWA. Kudos to Miguel Gomez, Ian Anderson, and Michelle Samplin-Salgado. (http://blog.aids.gov/2009/04/ready-to-share-napwa-embraces-new-media.html)
[08:53] Sarvana Haalan: Our business concept, “Real to Virtual; Virtual to Real” is embodied in our real life and in-world projects. The primary goal of our virtual building projects is to promote, educate, and network within our virtual world communities as well as our real life community. It is felt that any real life project (part or the entire project) can be integrated into a virtual world community to enhance the mission of the organization.
[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: In 2011, I recommended Chayen of Protect Yourself 1, Inc to join the community and the rest is history. (Protect Yourself 1, was a client at the time.) Recently, we are developing and conducting “Real To Virtual; Virtual to Real Workshops” working with a local university. It is hoped that funding can be obtained to assist more local nonprofits because many organizations are unable to the cover the related cost. Although response has been slow, we totally embrace our mission and vision.
[08:54] Sarvana Haalan: Wooot, PY!
[08:54] Chayenn: yes thank u
[08:55] Sarvana Haalan: they are off and running… so cool
[08:55] Sarvana Haalan: The “Virtual to Real” is the networking component of our concept… the networks established in-world are integrated into our real life networks. This has indeed happened with some many awesome networking partners over the years that we have been in-world.
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: The virtual business complex, “SarVana Business Centre” was designed, built and established to serve as the virtual headquarters for SarVana Marketing Network.
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: I look forward to bring more local nonprofits into the NPSL community.
[08:56] Sarvana Haalan: Although it was started in Second Life, components of our Real to Virtual; Virtual to Real Project can be found in Second Life, JokaydiaGRID, and most recently Kitely. Our interactive STD/STI Training Laboratory and Community HIV/AIDS Resource Exchange Center are located in CherNetiva @ jokaydiaGrid managed by Sarvana Cherry.
[08:57] Sarvana Haalan: In Second Life, our focus to getting more nonprofits involved and using the technology to enhance their missions and causes. Thank you for this opportunity to share!
[08:57] Zinnia Zauber: Wonderful Sar!

[09:02] Zayn: We’re a production company in the real world.
[09:02] karmagirl Avro: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:02] Zayn: Our origins however are rooted here in Second Life and our goals are twofold.. Or is it Threefold.. hmm..
[09:02] Teal Freenote: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (snort)
[09:02] Etheria Parrott: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:02] Zayn: Well we have goals! They’re good goals! 🙂
[09:02] Zayn: I’m Zayn and this is Wynx, and we are the creators and founders of The Tinies of Raglan Shire.
[09:02] Zayn: Without going into details, we have years of experience and formal training in graphic design, art, music and other real world skills that lend themselves quite well to what we’re working on as do our friends… *points to friends*
[09:02] Zayn: With us are our friends and real life members of Jazz Paws: Clover, Etheria, Karma and Teal! They fabulously nice and talented folken 🙂
[09:03] Zayn: Since you’re here in Second Life. I’ll tell you in detail where this all starts from…
[09:03] Zayn: Our origins as mentioned above start seven years back. With the creation of “The Tinies”
[09:03] Zayn: in 2005 Kage Seraph was the first to crush a standard Second Life “human” avatar down into a compact size.
[09:03] Zayn: He then overlaid “Prim parts” on the now crushed avatar and created the first “Small” avatar.
[09:03] Zayn: This first avatar was a small robot. He then made the animation overrider/scripts available to anyone wanting to use this method for making small avatars.
[09:03] Zayn: About the same time Wynx here had a DREAM in the real world.. This is a true story..
[09:03] Zayn: TELL EM ITS A TRUE STORY WYNX! 🙂
[09:03] Wynx Whiplash: YES
[09:03] Zayn Till: 😀
[09:03] Wynx Whiplash: it’s all troo
[09:03] Zayn:
[09:03] Zayn: K so Wynx was already creating STUFF in Second Life and was selling her content on the grid.
[09:03] Zayn: So she has a REAL dream one night. In this dream she was surrounded by adorable cute little small and upright animals..
[09:03] Zayn: and they loved her!
[09:03] karmagirl Avro: STUFF!!!
[09:03] Zayn: She awoke with a start and immediately realized that she HAD TO MAKE THESE ANIMALS in Second Life.
[09:04] Zayn: She contacted Kage Seraph who graciously made his crushing method available to her, and over the next month,
[09:04] Zayn: created the prims, painted textures and further animations that would result in the first of many more small animal avatars.. LIKE US…
[09:04] Zayn Till: BAM!!!!
[09:04] Zayn: She dubbed her creations “TINIES” and released them to the Second Life Public where they were gobbled up by the users of the grid with much enthusiasm.
[09:04] Sarvana Haalan: awesome
[09:04] Zayn: The Tinies became an instant hit.. and it was GOOD! 🙂
[09:04] Zayn Till: Hoooo!
[09:04] Zayn: Raglan Shire which was developed as the first Tiny Centric community and series of sims came along a few years later.
[09:04] Teal Freenote: ‚ô©‚ô™‚ô´‚ô¨ APPAWS! ‚ô©‚ô™‚ô´‚ô¨
[09:04] Namaara MacMoragh: yeah!
[09:04] Wynx Whiplash: |o/
[09:04] Zayn: In early 2007, I had been managing several sims that I owned.
[09:04] Zayn: I really had wanted to create a community , and I was already a Tiny avatar myself half of the time.
[09:04] Zayn: A friend who knew Wynx communicated to me that she and her friends who had a shop group together (Extrovirtual) were leaving the sim they had set up their SL business on and were looking for a new Virtual home.
[09:05] Zayn: We set up a meeting and discussed the idea of them moving onto my sims and in April of 2007 Raglan Shire opened its doors as a virtual place and as a COMMUNITY for tinies and friends to explore and become a part of.
[09:05] Zayn: Raglan Shire over the last 5 years has been one of the most dynamic virtual places on the Second Life Grid.
[09:05] Zayn: Spread out over 8 sims, it’s a lush forested setting of varying locales with tiny residential areas, shops and lots and lots of public areas for people to explore and enjoy.
[09:05] Zayn: There are a constant stream of events and activities and the focus from the start has always been about finding ways to bring people together in a friendly and welcoming and fun environment where people can interact, collaborate, be encouraged to create
[09:05] Zayn Till: I repeat, FRIENDLY WELCOMING AND FUN
[09:05] Zayn Till: 🙂
[09:05] Zayn: Its a very fun place. We do a lot of things. People really seem to like it.
[09:05] Zayn: So a few years back we talked and decided that all the things we do on Raglan Shire.. have real life merit.. and the tinies? Well the tinies are just super adorable.. and the backdrop of Raglan Shire? It was a excellent backdrop! We realized that Raglan S
[09:05] Zayn: So Wynx and myself with positive support from our friends formed JAZZ PAWS
[09:06] Zayn Till: oops
[09:06] Zayn Till: lol
[09:06] Clover Dezno: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:06] Zayn: Our goal is to re-imagine the Tinies and the World of Raglan Shire and present it to the rest of the world..
[09:06] Zayn: reach people we can’t ever hope to reach while in Second Life or Inworldz, and be able to do so in a much more fleshed out manner, artistically and story wise …
[09:06] Etheria Parrott: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:06] Zayn: That’s the FIRST of the Twofold Goals.. Lemme elaborate on this one first before going onto the Second.
[09:06] Zayn: So over the last two years we have been doing nothing other then developing new art, new models, new stories and scripts, music… new characters to center these ideas around… as I just mentioned ,
[09:06] Zayn: essentially recreating and re-imagining “The Tinies of Raglan Shire”
[09:06] Zayn: This has been just … just a ton of work. In addition to the creative side, there’s also been the business side. Its just been a tremendous amount of work. But we knew it would be.
[09:07] Zayn: So re-imagine the world, make it better, make it BIONIC.. tell the stories of the Tinies, share them with the world, Entertain people of ALL ages, make them smile.
[09:07] Zayn: That’s what we’re furiously working on as we prepare to sit down with Entertainment Industry representatives and pitch all of this too in 2013.
[09:07] Zayn: Our Second FOLD of our goals… and it’s something we have been trying to make certain that everyone understands AND is the TRUE ULTERIOR Goal of all of this.. is to use “The Tinies of Raglan Shire” to fund our desire to help people with humanitarian and
[09:07] Zayn: Art and Music, ways to help the sick or diabled and developmentally disabled… These are things that have touched us in Our community virtually and ourselves personally in the real world.
[09:07] Zayn Till: Humanitariand and PHILANTHROPIC goals..
[09:07] Zayn Till: k this Text thingy not working so well jhehe
[09:08] Zayn Till: i take over manually from here 🙂
[09:08] karmagirl Avro: ~*~ GO TEAM TINY!!!!!! ~*~
[09:08] Clover Dezno: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:08] Teal Freenote: HELLOOOOOOOo KNEES!!!!
[09:08] Zayn Till: basically we want to use our concept to brand and use as a gateway to fund and make known our desires to start create and maintain Humanitarian organization type offerings
[09:08] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thats really inspiring you guys
[09:09] Wynx Whiplash: I’ll jump in
[09:09] Zayn Till: 🙂
[09:09] karmagirl Avro: you can see a video of this on our kickstarter link
[09:09] Namaara MacMoragh: love kickstarter
[09:09] karmagirl Avro: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1203270798/the-tinies-of-raglan-shire
[09:10] Teal Freenote: click dis red button 🙂
[09:10] Wynx Whiplash: For years the community of Raglan Shire has raised money for worthy organizations, even helping ot memebers with money when they have been in trouble
[09:10] karmagirl Avro: in the video you can see what exactly we trying to do 😉
[09:10] Teal Freenote: you can see kickstarte project
[09:10] Wynx Whiplash: and it was great, but there’s so much more we can do
[09:10] Wynx Whiplash: and want to do
[09:10] Sarvana Haalan: I was just about to suggest Kickstarter
[09:11] karmagirl Avro: oh we welcome suggestions!
[09:11] Wynx Whiplash: and we felt like we had something we could give to the world to raise money to do the things we wanted to concentrate on
[09:11] Sarvana Haalan: a collegue in DC just got funding for his Social Media magazine project
[09:11] Zayn Till: You can click the links in chat or touch the two objects rezzed to the right of us to get to our web page, our kickstarter page where you can see our fikm we made. all the info is there 🙂
[09:11] Wynx Whiplash: yesh
[09:11] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): How are you drawing attentio nto your kickstarted campaign?
[09:11] Sarvana Haalan: *colleague
[09:11] Teal Freenote: JAZZ PAWS WEBSITE: http://www.jazzpaws.com

JAZZ PAWS @ KICKSTARTER: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1203270798/the-tinies-of-raglan-shire
[09:11] karmagirl Avro: we hoping to get our funding but we not yet at our goal
[09:11] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): what social media are you using?
[09:11] Clover Dezno: I will take that one’
[09:11] Wynx Whiplash: Clover, you want to talk about that?
[09:11] Wynx Whiplash: yay
[09:12] Wynx Whiplash: XD
[09:12] Clover Dezno: we are taking advantage of all social media that we cna get into
[09:12] Zayn Till: http://www.facebook.com/JazzPawsLLC
[09:12] Clover Dezno: and we are using our own personal netowrks to drive friends and family to those site
[09:12] Clover Dezno: and asking them to pass it along if tey find us worthy of support
[09:12] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): that’s often the most effective strategy
[09:12] Clover Dezno: we have no marketing or promo funds, so we are going entirely viral at this point
[09:12] Clover Dezno: and we certaily we come suggestions
[09:13] Clover Dezno: *welcome
[09:13] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I think TechSoup has done some webinars on kikcsarter type fundraising
[09:13] Clover Dezno: we are on facebook andw e are trying to understand Linked In enough to use it
[09:13] Sarvana Haalan: Just posted our lik on m FB page
[09:13] Teal Freenote: WE are using twitter as well
[09:13] Sarvana Haalan: link
[09:13] Zayn Till: yay likes 🙂
[09:13] Glitteractica Cookie: we did one on fundraising 2.0 for onprofits. on our NP live series
[09:14] Teal Freenote: Our base in the tiny community here is out there sharing and liking 🙂
[09:14] Clover Dezno: the social media make it kind of hard to exist out there as a “business”, they want to default to personal sites
[09:14] Wynx Whiplash: (wel, the other peeps are using Twitter – me, not so much. >_<)
[09:14] Clover Dezno: so we are kind of struggling
[09:14] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): My sense is that LinkedIn is not the best platform for fundraising this kind of campaign
[09:14] Teal Freenote: Virtual press releases have resulted in some blog notices, that have drawn attention and donors.
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): entertaining YouTube appeals can be really effective if done well
[09:15] Clover Dezno: we have appeared on the blogs of some friends, and oen actually resulted in Zayn being contacted for an interview wiht BBC Radio
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): nice!
[09:15] Clover Dezno: and yes we are plannign to go to youtube as well
[09:15] Wynx Whiplash: well, we did do a video. 😀
[09:15] Zayn Till: oh ya , we were intervied the other day on The BBC
[09:15] Clover Dezno: but again, we have to drive traffic there
[09:16] Clover Dezno: and we are a small network right now
[09:16] Zayn Till: a “TINY” network 🙂
[09:16] Clover Dezno: YESH
[09:16] karmagirl Avro: yes you might even say tiny 😀
[09:16] karmagirl Avro: again, our facebook page is this: http://www.facebook.com/JazzPawsLLC if anyone wants to join
[09:17] Clover Dezno: if we cna secure this most immediate funding goal, we cna then continue our production of proof-of-concept materials and demos, and atthat poinr hopefully we cans eek some larger investors
[09:17] karmagirl Avro: like our page! share it!
[09:17] Wynx Whiplash: yeah, wot she said
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): are you hoping to launch a traditional broadcast series, or a web series?
[09:17] Wynx Whiplash: hopefully traditional
[09:18] Zayn Till: our main goal in regards to that question… is
[09:18] Zayn Till: we’re trying to put together a successful pitch.. this is what we’re working oin and what the funding is for..
[09:18] Sarvana Haalan: who is your primary target population?
[09:18] Zayn Till: getting to the point where we have 3 Proof of concept short animations.. scrips, bible, stories merchandicing and marketing plan
[09:18] Wynx Whiplash: we’re hoping for a wide demographic but family oriented
[09:19] Glitteractica Cookie: Can you tell us about a particular sucessful fundraising effort you have done?
[09:19] Wynx Whiplash: Yes, Glitteractica – we have sold swag from our website
[09:19] Wynx Whiplash: small to start
[09:20] Wynx Whiplash: we offered 2 kinds of t-shirts and a series of buttons, keychains, magnets
[09:20] Glitteractica Cookie: and how much did you raise? For which nonprofit group?
[09:20] Teal Freenote: money raised from these items helped fund character rigging
[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): what kind of swag?
[09:20] Wynx Whiplash: we did orders for a few weeks and are about to do a 2nd swag push and will have our shop up for a longer time, if not permanently this time.
[09:21] Zayn Till: as i explained to Rik, we’re not raising money for a non profit group right now and we are NOT a non profit group (oither then having no money jhehe) what we hope to do one day is use our concept as a gateway and if successful be able to use monies raised to FUND our own non profit ideas in the future
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): that’s totally cool
[09:21] Teal Freenote: however…
[09:22] Wynx Whiplash: and our swag money we raised was for our productions – the other fundraising things you are probably talking about was the non profits we raised money for was the Raglan Shire group’s thing. Zayn…?
[09:22] Wynx Whiplash: (Zayn has the facts & figures)
[09:22] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I invited you here so we could learn from how you are doing fundraising and spreading your brand across other social spaces
[09:22] Wynx Whiplash: and is typing away. 😀
[09:22] Zayn Till: in the past in Second Life Raglan Shire in our own community we have over the past 5 years raised over $3000 for One.org and various other chairities and orgs
[09:23] Zayn Till: Rik actually covered our very first big event years anbd years ago when we had our first fundraising foray
[09:23] Etheria Parrott: and adopted some animals in zoos
[09:23] Zayn Till: YESH
[09:23] Etheria Parrott: We has a giraffe :))
[09:23] Zayn Till: we have an adopted Tapir and a giraffe
[09:23] Etheria Parrott: and a tapir!
[09:23] Zayn Till: GIRAFFE!!!!!
[09:23] karmagirl Avro: ~*~ TAPIR!! ~*~
[09:24] jacmacaire Humby: Hi everyone.. Sorry to be in late
[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): oh wow I forgt about that!
[09:24] Zayn Till: fundraising.. again through Kickstarter, word of mouth, friends families and soon in the real world , with approaching angel investors.. working on real life marketing plan and the like to approach business entitities
[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): can you guys say a bit more about the tinies community in general
[09:25] Glitteractica Cookie: I’m interested in learning how we can learn from your successes as a vibrant community in SL
[09:25] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, Rik, exactly… how many members, how often are you throwing events
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Why has it been successful when so many others have died out or fled o other platforms
[09:26] Glitteractica Cookie: what kind of events?
[09:26] Teal Freenote: I think because its FUN primarily 🙂
[09:26] Zayn Till: TIny community… zomg it just amazing, its creative silly, non Status quo.. could right a book on tinyness
[09:26] 01 Hifeng: lol i see you guys love animals… i bought two chinchillas about week ago
[09:26] Teal Freenote: But also has attracted many smart, creative people and encouraged them
[09:26] Wynx Whiplash: maybe instead of a book, we’ll just make an animated show. 😉
[09:26] Zayn Till: yeah!
[09:26] Clover Dezno: yes, we focus on community building, not just come in, have fun, leave
[09:27] karmagirl Avro: we do a book after „ã°
[09:27] Glitteractica Cookie: Talk to us more about the community bldg aspect
[09:27] Wynx Whiplash: chinchillas! so CUTE!!!
[09:27] Bathsheba Vizenor (bathsheba.darkfold): is there a list of events online or at Raglanshire?
[09:27] Zayn Till: best way really.. to see what tinydom is all about.. is to come by the Shire.. especially during one of event months.. and see for yurself!
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): how does a newbie gt welcomed for example?
[09:27] Clover Dezno: we try to get people involved in keeping the community fresh and active, they have a sense of “ownership”
[09:27] Etheria Parrott: We have themed months throughout the year such as schi-fi month, steampunk month etc
[09:27] Teal Freenote: http://www.raglanshire.com/
[09:28] Wynx Whiplash: list of events there
[09:28] Wynx Whiplash: on the raglanshire.com
[09:28] 01 Hifeng: xD yeah, chins are amazing
[09:28] Zayn Till: thats raglan shire in second life link there 🙂
[09:28] Clover Dezno: we have a VERY active chat group where tinies gtet to know each other, and cna just be as silly as theyw ant
[09:28] karmagirl Avro: oh we have a welcome center 😀 full of free stuff for new tinies
[09:28] Carl Solutionary (carlicann): Do you have something life a welcome area for new people? Which sim?
[09:28] 01 Hifeng: your avatars look similar… they look a bit like bunnies at some angles, heh
[09:28] Wynx Whiplash: yesh! Gestures, cool stuffs
[09:29] Bathsheba Vizenor (bathsheba.darkfold): thanks! can human avatars visit?
[09:29] Wynx Whiplash: of course!!!
[09:29] Bathsheba Vizenor (bathsheba.darkfold): and be sometimes tiny?
[09:29] Clover Dezno: We have a sandbox area on Raglan Shire also, where tinies can build, play, dance, socialize
[09:29] Wynx Whiplash: I’m a biggie very often
[09:29] Bathsheba Vizenor (bathsheba.darkfold): cool thanks!
[09:29] Clover Dezno: humans are veyr welcome!
[09:29] Teal Freenote: Welcome Center: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Raglan%20Shire/170/124/41
[09:29] Wynx Whiplash: and they hug my knees a lot.
[09:29] Bathsheba Vizenor (bathsheba.darkfold): sweet!
[09:29] Clover Dezno: we won;t bite your ankles
[09:29] Etheria Parrott: and we have Raglan U – tinies teaching tinies
[09:29] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): nice!
[09:30] Clover Dezno: there are also rental parcels on the sims, so the tinies cna live where they play
[09:30] karmagirl Avro: I can’t make that promise about ankle biting or paw chopping. im a squabbit we a bit feral. „ã°
[09:30] Etheria Parrott: We teach building and scripting skills to help people yo build our complicated clothimng and other cool stuff
[09:30] Clover Dezno: fundamentally, we stay totally in character and true to the tinies “brand”, so people feel comfortbale and at home there
[09:31] Clover Dezno: we allow and encourage people thatw e trust to have events or activities
[09:31] Etheria Parrott: Biggies are of course welcome to join in
[09:31] Clover Dezno: it is a very inclusive community
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): how often does your average tiny spend in inworld, you think?
[09:31] Bathsheba Vizenor (bathsheba.darkfold): so you should try to have a story for yourself-a persona when you are tiny?
[09:31] Wynx Whiplash: interesting question
[09:31] Zayn Till: i would have no idea myself. probably varies?
[09:31] Clover Dezno: not necessarily Bath, we are not a role play community
[09:31] Teal Freenote: No its not role paly, but if you hang round tinies much, you will see each is unique
[09:32] Zayn Till: oh yes very true.. not a role play group by any means
[09:32] Etheria Parrott: some have disabilities and stay on for many hours every day and others work during the day and come there to chill after work
[09:32] Clover Dezno: when I say “in character”, I mean tiny avis, and as much silliness as makes you happy 🙂
[09:32] Wynx Whiplash: You don’t *need* a persona, but people usually develop them over time. They become attached to their avatars
[09:32] Bathsheba Vizenor (bathsheba.darkfold): /me nods! I get it! I went to one of your dances and had a ton of fun!
[09:32] Zayn Till: ~*~ OSSM!!!~*~
[09:32] Zayn Till: 🙂
[09:32] Teal Freenote: And some culture has developed over the years … language, behaviors, silly jokes.
[09:32] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so perhaps at a minimum once a day?
[09:32] Wynx Whiplash: WAFFLES
[09:33] Zayn Till: ***Yeap***
[09:33] Zayn Till: could be ..
[09:33] karmagirl Avro: someone said dancing 😀
[09:33] Clover Dezno: it is a place where peopel can truly go and experience a second childhood, get the weight of the real world off thier shoulders for a little bit, and not have to deal wiht much of the drama that we see in biggie sims
[09:33] Teal Freenote: woooohooo
[09:33] Etheria Parrott: yes at any one time you will see a very long list of memebers on our Frinds of Raglan Shire chat group list
[09:33] Clover Dezno: like any other sim, the active population cycles over time
[09:33] Etheria Parrott: typos hell today 😉
[09:33] karmagirl Avro: ::FAINT!::
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I think there is a real challenge in bridging the gap between online communities primarily focsed on fun and socializing and the serious issues and causes we ahve represented here.
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we also have fun events and dances, but probably not the kind of constant engagement that you guys sustain.
[09:34] Zayn Till: for an example of community creativeness, involvement and fun.. heres a video of last weeks Raglan SHire Steam Punk Mardi Gras Parade we had.. we invited the community to make parades and be in the parade. we had 25 floats as created by communuity members. it was amazing to see. 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0RUWsEV240
[09:35] Zayn Till: parade floats 🙂
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): nice!
[09:35] Clover Dezno: there is Rik, but we believe that the FUN is one path to helping others
[09:35] karmagirl Avro: /me adjusts her birdnest hairdo and gives the birds a treat
[09:36] Clover Dezno: if we cna put a smile on people’s faces when they come to Raglan,m then we have already done soem good. If we can take that smile and turn it into something real, like in kickstarter, then we will have accomplished something worthwhile
[09:36] Clover Dezno: because if we cna make it throught his difficult period of resource gathering, we feel that we cna really be a force for good.
[09:36] Zayn Till: but the combination of Cute adorable critters, a whimsical backdrop on which to tell stories against, and a goal of using it all to do some actual good beyond just making a buck .. THIS is what we’re trying to do with Jazz apws as we take all of this to the next stage,
[09:37] Clover Dezno: YESH
[09:37] Zayn Till: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Bringing joy and fun to people’s lives is itself a laudable cause, so we wish you luck with this
[09:37] Clover Dezno: JAZZ PAWS!
[09:37] Wynx Whiplash: Thank you, Rik!!!
[09:37] Teal Freenote: ***Woot Woot ***
[09:37] Zayn Till: Thanks for letting us come and talk with you all today!!
[09:37] Etheria Parrott: thank you 🙂
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and we’d love you guys to come back for some of our events and parties with the “biggies”
[09:37] karmagirl Avro: i feel like tiny vanna white

Learn about Jazz Paws and the Tiny Community in SL on March 9

We’ve got something a little bit different for this Friday’s Nonprofit Commons: Jazz Paws! Every once in awhile, we welcome to the NPC interesting sub-cultures and communities in the virtual world that we think might have something instructive to share with us as nonprofits and charities. The tiny community is one such group that I’ve long been a fan of.

“Jazz Paws” is an Atlanta-based entertainment production company charged with bringing the whimsical world of Raglan Shire and its denizens, the tiny animals that inhabit it, to life. A for-profit company, their larger goal is not only to entertain but also raise funds and awareness for different causes and charities. They have a Kickstarter campaign to launch an animated series based on Raglan Shire. This could be our most adorable Nonprofit Commons meeting EVER.

Join us starting at 8:30am PT as we welcome Jazz Paws to the NPC, as well as get some knowledge from our Mentors and get news and announcements from across the nonprofit world in Second Life and beyond. See you then!

Meet the BEST of Both Worlds

Namaara MacMoragh of BEST at NPC

Although Namaara MacMoragh is a happy and fulfilled consultant at GReat Kreations, an organization dedicated to developing “organizational capacity through information technology and information management, strategic planning, board training, and systems development” for nonprofit organizations in the US, it was the work she does for Brain Energy Support Team (BEST), that brought her before the Nonprofit Commons last Friday, March 2nd.

BEST is a wonderful group that has been providing peer-to-peer support, resources, and access to services for those with brain injuries in the real and Second Life worlds since 2008. Implementing unique ways for recovering patients, BEST’s primary modus operandi is to include the friends and family of the injured, making them a central role and active participant in the recovery process.

More about BEST and the work Namaara does with them in her presentation below…

Namaara MacMoragh: BEST is a leader in training for support group facilitators, professionals, and educators. Through their mentoring program, Project PEER, BEST also offers a unique way of empowering individuals with brain injury and their caregivers.

Namaara MacMoragh: Our goal is to create engagement around the real issues of brain injury that go beyond the injury itself. An injury occurs in a moment. The cognitive, emotional, physical challenges that alter someone’s life often last for many years and often go unaddressed.

Namaara MacMoragh: Second Life offered us an opportunity to work together building an organizational foundation for BEST while living 3,000 miles apart. It was 6 months after we began working together in SL that we actually met in RL for a board training session in 2009.

Namaara MacMoragh: March is the official month for Brain Injury Awareness. BEST, Etopia, and the fabulous folks at HealthInfo Island have worked together to create a celebration and awareness campaign that includes presentations, displays, concerts, gift hunt, and more to raise awareness about, and raise dollars for, brain injury.

Namaara MacMoragh: We are collaborating with others in SL who are providing support, information & referral, and social opportunities for individuals with brain injury as well as training and resources for professionals and educators.

Namaara MacMoragh: I’m especially excited to work with Gentle Heron of Virtual Abilities. I’ve learned a lot and so appreciate the ideas, support, and … well … at the expense of gushing… everything. As an aside, it’s been wonderful to watch the growth of such a valuable organization here in SL.

Namaara MacMoragh: Thank you again, Gentle, for the wonderful slide presentation about brain injury. I hope everyone will visit HealthInfo Island to learn about brain injury and more.

Namaara MacMoragh: Another great relationship that has been forged because of our work in Second Life is with Zinnia Zauber. She is working with BEST to create an original branding element (hope I said that right) for the hospital bags BEST and Headstrong are giving families of individuals that are hospitalized with brain injury.

Namaara MacMoragh: These collaborations would not have happened without a community such as Nonprofit Commons in Second Life and the commitment of TechSoup Global to support and foster nonprofits around the world. I was living in NY when I started working with fate. Zinnia and Gentle are also in other locations than in my neighborhood.

Namaara MacMoragh: We have a lot of great events, presentations, displays, and builds across sims we are highlighting during Brain Injury Awareness month and throughout April and May, with a huge World-wide brain injury picnic day on June 16th.

Namaara MacMoragh: This is our collective opportunity to also showcase the work we do here to families, professionals, and funders.

Namaara MacMoragh: When I started working with BEST we had a shoestring budget. BEST then became lead on a Support Group Infrastructure Project in the state of Washington.

Namaara MacMoragh: This year they received independent funding from the state to not only continue their work with support group development, but to administer mini-grants to groups across the state. This increase in funding is because of the way BEST has used SL and other virtual work tools to communicate, train, and support facilitators and others.

Namaara MacMoragh: These are just some of the ways we work with real people on real issues in virtual worlds.

And now, some virtual world knowledge from Mentor’s Central. Last Friday’s topic: benefits people with disabilities get from being in a virtual world.

Eme Capalini: Just a quick reminder of why this is an important topic. One out of every five avatars you meet in SL belongs to someone with one or more disabilities – physical, mental, emotional, or sensory.

Eme Capalini: Until recently, when we spoke of the benefits of virtual worlds, we mainly had anecdotal evidence in four categories.

Eme Capalini: I’m going to share with you some quotes I’ve heard from our community members that fit into these categories.

Eme Capalini: Learning benefits abound in Second Life.

Eme Capalini: Although people don’t typically come into SL seeking peer support for their disability, once they hook up with one of the over 120 different peer support groups here, they can learn quite a lot!

Eme Capalini: You might not think of distraction as a benefit, but to people with severe disabilities, getting their mind off their pain is important.

Eme Capalini: Doctors in burn clinics use virtual ice worlds, where the patient can throw snowballs at penguins and ice gnomes, to distract the patients from the agony of burn debridement, bandage changes, and the other painful treatments they must undergo.

Eme Capalini: For medical benefits, there has been some research, so the evidence of benefits isn’t just anecdotal.

Eme Capalini: Researchers confirm that people can improve their concentration, their social skills, even their spatial awareness, simply by interacting with others in a virtual world setting.

Eme Capalini: I think that social benefits are probably the most important to people with disabilities, who are often socially and physically isolated. Imagine being able to make friends with people your own age when you’ve spent half your life lying in bed seeing only your family and nurses!

Eme Capalini: It’s a lot easier to “be yourself” around other people if they aren’t put off by seeing your scars or withered limbs.

Eme Capalini: We’re finally making progress on gathering research evidence to support what we hear from our community members.

Eme Capalini: The psychology department at Loyola Marymount University in California recently gave a poster presentation about research they conducted in collaboration with Virtual Ability.

Eme Capalini: The research consisted of a survey given to people who identified themselves as having a disability. The survey was given during their first week in Second Life, and repeated after 3 months here.

Eme Capalini: It was a small study, but the results are significant, as they are the first of their kind to be done in SL.

Eme Capalini: Participants in the study completed a variety of standardized measures that were selected to assess their psychological well-being and adjustment.

Eme Capalini: There was no treatment in this study. The participants didn’t have to attend classes, report in regularly, keep a diary, or anything else regulated. They could do whatever they pleased.

Eme Capalini: The majority logged in frequently, and for extended periods. They became immersed in their second lives.

Eme Capalini: When they first came into SL, the measures indicated that the majority of participants showed clinical signs of depression. That’s not unexpected, in a group of people among whom half were severely disabled.

Eme Capalini: Overall, the research showed that simply being in a virtual world, doing whatever you wanted to do, was very helpful. Statistically, the newcomers after 3 months were less depressed, less anxious, and less lonely.

Eme Capalini: They also were had a more positive outlook on themselves, were more satisfied with their lives, and had higher self-esteem.

Eme Capalini: I’d like to encourage you to think about all the benefits you’ve received from being in a virtual world.

Following Eme’s request, I’m taking a moment to do just that. What are some of the benefits you’ve seen in your own lives?

[08:46] Glitteractica Cookie: or her colleague stephanie

[08:46] bulaklak: I can talk to Sarah

[08:46] Glitteractica Cookie: tweet at them

[08:46] bulaklak: And see if she’s up for it

[08:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): not TechSoup community

[08:46] bulaklak: I am sure she would love to do it

[08:46] Glitteractica Cookie: if not, stephanie will be

[08:46] bulaklak: Or Stephanie

[08:46] Glitteractica Cookie: they’ve done it before

[08:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Gentle was suggesting the SL community of librarians

[08:46] Glitteractica Cookie: And there’s always the info isle folks

[08:46] Eme Capalini: There is a Second Life Library 2.0 group you can join. You can talk to the officers about posting a notice for you.

[08:46] Glitteractica Cookie: we can make this happen

[08:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): yeah I haven’t found anyone there who has responded to me

[08:47] bulaklak: Seems like good network weaving to happen.

[08:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so if anyone else can be in touch and connect them to to me that would be great!

[08:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thanks!

[08:47] bulaklak: All right. Thanks, folks!

[08:47] Chayenn: thanks bulaklak

[08:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Ok now we are Mentors Central

[08:48] Zinnia Zauber: Eme Capalini, Vice President for Virtual Ability, will share the Loyola Marymount research on benefits of virtual world use.

[08:48] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Who speaks for the Mentors?

[08:48] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Eme!

[08:48] Zazoom Zimminy: /me whispers Kyle Reis, Grants Managers Network, NYC

[08:48] Gentle Heron: Eme will, thank you.

[08:49] Buffy Beale: Cheering for Eme!

[08:49] Eme Capalini: Good morning, and thanks for inviting me here today to share with you about the benefits people with disabilities get from being in a virtual world.

[08:49] Eme Capalini: Just a quick reminder of why this is an important topic. One out of every five avatars you meet in SL belongs to someone with one or more disabilities – physical, mental, emotional, or sensory.

[08:49] Eme Capalini: I’m Eme Capalini from the Virtual Ability non-profit peer support community here in SL. We have over 650 members now, and we provide a variety of kinds of support, education, services, and a strong sense of community for our membership. I’m the Vice President for Development for our 501(3)c corporation.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: Until recently, when we spoke of the benefits of virtual worlds, we mainly had anecdotal evidence in four categories.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: I’m going to share with you some quotes I’ve heard from our community members that fit into these categories.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: Learning benefits abound in Second Life.

[08:50] Eme Capalini: Although people don’t typically come into SL seeking peer support for their disability, once they hook up with one of the over 120 different peer support groups here, they can learn quite a lot!

[08:51] Eme Capalini: Plus of course, all the formal (e.g., college classes) and informal (e.g., SL classes) learning opportunities here.

[08:51] Eme Capalini: You might not think of distraction as a benefit, but to people with severe disabilities, getting their mind off their pain is important.

[08:51] Eme Capalini: Doctors in burn clinics use virtual ice worlds, where the patient can throw snowballs at penguins and ice gnomes, to distract the patients from the agony of burn debridement, bandage changes, and the other painful treatments they must undergo.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: For medical benefits, there has been some research, so the evidence of benefits isn’t just anecdotal.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: Researchers confirm that people can improve their concentration, their social skills, even their spatial awareness, simply by interacting with others in a virtual world setting.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: I think that social benefits are probably the most important to people with disabilities, who are often socially and physically isolated. Imagine being able to make friends with people your own age when you’ve spent half your life lying in bed seeing only your family and nurses!

[08:52] Eme Capalini: It’s a lot easier to “be yourself” around other people if they aren’t put off by seeing your scars or withered limbs.

[08:52] Eme Capalini: We’re finally making progress on gathering research evidence to support what we hear from our community members.

[08:53] Eme Capalini: The psychology department at Loyola Marymount University in California recently gave a poster presentation about research they conducted in collaboration with Virtual Ability.

[08:53] Eme Capalini: The research consisted of a survey given to people who identified themselves as having a disability. The survey was given during their first week in Second Life, and repeated after 3 months here.

[08:53] Eme Capalini: It was a small study, but the results are significant, as they are the first of their kind to be done in SL.

[08:54] Eme Capalini: Participants in the study completed a variety of standardized measures that were selected to assess their psychological well-being and adjustment.

[08:54] Eme Capalini: There was no treatment in this study. The participants didn’t have to attend classes, report in regularly, keep a diary, or anything else regulated. They could do whatever they pleased.

[08:54] Eme Capalini: The majority logged in frequently, and for extended periods. They became immersed in their second lives.

[08:54] Kali Idziak: /me whispers Jessica Dally, Community Voice Mail, Seattle, WA

[08:54] Eme Capalini: When they first came into SL, the measures indicated that the majority of participants showed clinical signs of depression. That’s not unexpected, in a group of people among whom half were severely disabled.

[08:55] Eme Capalini: Overall, the research showed that simply being in a virtual world, doing whatever you wanted to do, was very helpful. Statistically, the newcomers after 3 months were less depressed, less anxious, and less lonely.

[08:55] Eme Capalini: They also were had a more positive outlook on themselves, were more satisfied with their lives, and had higher self-esteem.

[08:55] Eme Capalini: I’m happy to answer your questions now. I’d also like to encourage you to think about all the benefits you’ve received from being in a virtual world.

[08:55] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): godo to know!

[08:55] Eme Capalini: /me smiles

[08:56] Buffy Beale: clapping, thanks Eme

[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: This awesome!

[08:56] Eme Capalini: Thanks again for inviting me to speak with you today. If you have further questions, please send me an IM.

[08:56] Gentle Heron: Thank you Eme for giving this report.

[08:56] James at Lloud (lloud.laffer): clapping

[08:56] bulaklak: Wow, that is really fascinating!

[08:56] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Are there plans to expand the research?

[08:56] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you Eme!!!

[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): good stuff

[08:56] fate Paule: Incredible work!! thank you so much

[08:56] Gentle Heron: @Jerry- VAI is working with several researchers at the moment.

[08:56] Brena Benoir: Thank you for sharing Eme!

[08:56] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and a great transition for our featured speaker…

[08:56] Eme Capalini: My pleasure

[08:57] Rhiannon Chatnoir: /me popped in just a bit ago… hi all

[08:57] Buffy Beale: Question: Has there been an increase in the number of people joining you in Second Life for this use?

[08:57] Eme Capalini: We’d love to repeat it with a larger group.

[08:57] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): o/

[08:57] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): || Yaaaaaaaay n Stuff!!!!!

[08:57] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): /

[08:57] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): Eme

[08:57] Gentle Heron: @Buffy- We now number over 650 members.

[08:57] Buffy Beale: fantastic!

[08:57] Eme Capalini: Absolutely Buffy

[08:57] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): @Gentle, Would love to hear more as the research progresses.

[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): might be a full featured presentation rather than a Mentors Corner

[08:58] Buffy Beale: thanks Gentle and Eme

[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ok we need to move on though right now

[08:58] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Namaara can you come on down?

[08:58] Namaara MacMoragh: good morning

[08:58] Zinnia Zauber: Rah Namaara!

[08:58] Buffy Beale: cheering for Namaara!

[08:58] Namaara MacMoragh: 🙂

[08:58] Gentle Heron: YAY Namaara.

[08:58] Namaara MacMoragh: Wow! What a great presentation Eme. Virtual Ability rocks!! And I’m so glad we’re collaborating on Brain Injury Awareness Month.

[08:59] fate Paule: *claps * 🙂

[08:59] Eme Capalini: Thanks 🙂

[08:59] Namaara MacMoragh: But I better stick to my notes or I’ll wander off into someone else’s time… hehe.

[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We are happy to have Namaara MacMoragh here to talk with us about recent work being done to help people with brain injuries using VWs

[08:59] Namaara MacMoragh: Thank you Rick, and everyone here, for the opportunity to speak with you today.. I’d like to start by telling you a little about myself and my work. Then share with you about brain injury and brain injury awareness month in SL.

[08:59] Namaara MacMoragh: I am a consultant with GReat Kreations (http://greatkreations.com). which was founded in 1995 to meet the growing demand for services by nonprofit organizations in the US.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: A lot has happened through the years and I now work collaboratively with colleagues and clients around the world as my work continues to evolve around issues of organizational sustainability and continuance.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: But, in 2008 I was working on developing virtual staff and workplaces that allowed greater flexibility to meet the needs of my clients without increasing the burden of costs during an economically turbulent time.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: That’s how I wound up in Second Life.

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: In late 2008 I began attending NPC meetings and events and met fate Paule at a Tuesday gathering at Wharf Ratz. fate is the Executive Director of a Washington State nonprofit; Brain Energy Support Team (BEST) .

[09:00] Namaara MacMoragh: fate is with us today to answer questions as they come up. Say hi, fate.

[09:01] Namaara MacMoragh: 🙂

[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: Rah fate!

[09:01] Gentle Heron: Hello Fate and welcome.

[09:01] fate Paule: hello everyone 🙂 thanks for letting us be here

[09:01] Namaara MacMoragh: I’ve been working with fate on a variety of projects ever since — at the BEST SL office on Etopia and in the RL BEST office in Tacoma WA.

[09:01] Namaara MacMoragh: BEST was founded in 2008 and is the leading organization of individuals with brain injury and their caregivers providing peer-to-peer support, resources, and access to services for those with brain injury and their caregivers.

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: BEST is a leader in training for support group facilitators, professionals, and educators. Through their mentoring program, Project PEER, BEST also offers a unique way of empowering individuals with brain injury and their caregivers. You can find out more at http://projectpeer.org

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: Our goal is to create engagement around the real issues of brain injury that go beyond the injury itself. An injury occurs in a moment. The cognitive, emotional, physical challenges that alter someone’s life often last for many years and often go unaddressed.

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: Second Life offered us an opportunity to work together building an organizational foundation for BEST while living 3,000 miles apart. It was 6 months after we began working together in SL that we actually met in RL for a board training session in 2009.

[09:02] Namaara MacMoragh: March is the official month for Brain Injury Awareness. BEST, Etopia, and the fabulous folks at HealthInfo Island (yay Gentle and crew!} have worked together to create a celebration and awareness campaign that includes presentations, displays, concerts, gift hunt, and more to raise awareness about, and raise dollars for, brain injury.

[09:03] Namaara MacMoragh: We are collaborating with others in SL who are providing support, information & referral, and social opportunities for individuals with brain injury as well as training and resources for professionals and educators.

[09:03] Namaara MacMoragh: I’m especially excited to work with Gentle Heron of Virtual Abilities. I’ve learned a lot and so appreciate the ideas, support, and … well … at the expense of gushing… everything. As an aside, it’s been wonderful to watch the growth of such a valuable organization here in SL.

[09:03] Gentle Heron: /me points to the VAI team!

[09:03] Namaara MacMoragh: Thank you again, Gentle, for the wonderful slide presentation about brain injury. I hope everyone will visit HealthInfo Island to learn about brain injury and more.

[09:03] Namaara MacMoragh: 🙂

[09:04] Namaara MacMoragh: you guys reall do rock!!

[09:04] Namaara MacMoragh: Another great relationship that has been forged because of our work in Second Life is with Zinnia Zauber. She is working with BEST to create an original branding element (hope I said that right) for the hospital bags BEST and Headstrong are giving families of individuals that are hospitalized with brain injury.

[09:04] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, Namaara!

[09:04] Buffy Beale: Rah Z!

[09:04] Namaara MacMoragh: These collaborations would not have happened without a community such as Nonprofit Commons in Second Life and the commitment of TechSoup Global to support and foster nonprofits around the world. I was living in NY when I started working with fate. Zinnia and Gentle are also in other locations than in my neighborhood.

[09:05] Namaara MacMoragh: We have a lot of great events, presentations, displays, and builds across sims we are highlighting during Brain Injury Awareness month and throughout April and May, with a huge World-wide brain injury picnic day on June 16th.

[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (wow fantastic!)

[09:05] Veri Oddfellow: *waves* Hi all … Brad Lewis, Great Strides, Damascus, MD, US http://www.GreatStrides.org

[09:05] Namaara MacMoragh: This is our collective opportunity to also showcase the work we do here to families, professionals, and funders.

[09:05] Namaara MacMoragh: When I started working with BEST we had a shoestring budget. BEST then became lead on a Support Group Infrastructure Project in the state of Washington.

[09:05] Namaara MacMoragh: This year they recieved independent funding from the state to not only continue their work with support group development, but to administer mini-grants to groups across the state. This increase in funding is because of the way BEST has used SL and other virtual work tools to communicate, train, and support facilitators and others.

[09:06] Namaara MacMoragh: These are just some of the ways we work with real people on real issues in virtual worlds.

[09:06] Namaara MacMoragh: We invite you to visit Etopia Eco-Communities, the BEST office, and HealthInfo Island throughout the month to learn more and get some cool gifts.

[09:06] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (oo free stuff)

[09:06] Namaara MacMoragh: Please IM me and I’ll get our info giver to you to help us promote brain injury awareness throughout March.

[09:07] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We’re happy to host signage here for the month

[09:07] Namaara MacMoragh: (note to self… don’t wear gesture hud next time you speak)

[09:07] Namaara MacMoragh: Visit http://etopiaisland.org for updates, clues, and event information.

[09:07] Gentle Heron: he he he Namaara!

[09:07] Namaara MacMoragh: thank you Rick

[09:07] fate Paule: hehe

[09:07] Namaara MacMoragh: Also, you can learn more about BEST at http://brainenergysupportteam.org and Virtual Ability at http://virtualability.org

[09:07] Namaara MacMoragh: And that’s all I wanted to say as far as canned speaches go.

[09:07] Namaara MacMoragh: Please ask questions

[09:07] Namaara MacMoragh: fate is here and so is Gentle

[09:08] Namaara MacMoragh: (hugs you guys for always catching my back)

[09:08] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): Question does Best offer support training here in sl or a class online somewhere?

[09:09] Buffy Beale: Question: Do you plan to or use any other virtual worlds?

[09:09] fate Paule: We have our support group facilitatorwebinar at BISGN.org

[09:09] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Question: can you say more about why Second Life was chosen for working with people w brain injuries over other kinds of technologies?

[09:09] Namaara MacMoragh: right now we’re only in SL Buffy, but I’ve looked at OpenSims

[09:09] Namaara MacMoragh: SponOn3D

[09:09] Namaara MacMoragh: and others

[09:09] Namaara MacMoragh: SL is the most robust so far

[09:09] Jen (jenelle.levenque): QUESTION: Do you have any support specifically for veterans

[09:09] Namaara MacMoragh: (even if the most expensive)

[09:10] fate Paule: In real life we work really closesly with local and state vet organizations

[09:10] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): Does BEST have a page on facebook we can like?

[09:10] Namaara MacMoragh: @Rik … we use GoTo to facilitate meetings and traingings. We chose SL because of robustness.

[09:10] fate Paule: as a vet myself, these issues are very close to my heart

[09:10] Zinnia Zauber: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brain-Energy-Support-Team/165908016753065

[09:10] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Thank you Fate

[09:11] Namaara MacMoragh: @Rik… there are many reasons why a virtual world is appealing for briain injured indv

[09:11] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): ty Zinnia

[09:11] Namaara MacMoragh: A lot of the noise, lights, and cognitive overload triggers aren’t here

[09:11] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): The DoD has a SL sim focused on recovering vets, but I’m not sure how active it is…

[09:11] fate Paule: I actually came to sl to help the Washington Dept of veterans see if virtual worlds could provide support and couceling for returning vets with PTSD and TBI

[09:11] Buffy Beale: Thanks Namaara

[09:12] Gentle Heron: @Rik- The answers to that question of why virtual worlds appeal to those with brain injuries are as varied as the symptoms those injuries cause.

[09:12] Namaara MacMoragh: in addition in the case of multiple physical challenges virtual environments facilitate opportunities for success that RL situations may not

[09:12] Namaara MacMoragh: yes Gentle… thank you

[09:12] Namaara MacMoragh: (sometimes I get wordy)

[09:13] Namaara MacMoragh: DId I lose questions?

[09:13] Namaara MacMoragh: I’d like to make sure we answer you…

[09:13] fate Paule: As a person with a brain injury, i found sl perfect at many points of my recovery

[09:14] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I think Virtual Worlds work because they can be tailored with relative ease to provide the needed environments

[09:14] fate Paule: challenges with sensory overload, made activities like shopping impossible in rl

[09:14] Namaara MacMoragh: yes

[09:14] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): @Jen, Yes.

[09:14] Namaara MacMoragh: I work with clients in SL to collaborate on a number of sustainability issues organizationally

[09:14] fate Paule: in sl, I can control the stimulus and enjoy many activities that I can’t in sl

[09:14] Namaara MacMoragh: SL is a perfect collaboration environment

[09:15] Zinnia Zauber: It really is!

[09:15] Namaara MacMoragh: I was part of a caregiver group that shopped, “ate out” and generally had fun here

[09:15] fate Paule: as people who experienced brain injuries start to redefine their new selves and idenity after a brain injury, it has such potential to positively affect folks

[09:15] Namaara MacMoragh: often caregivers can’t leave a brain injured family memeber alone

[09:15] Namaara MacMoragh: SL provides a fun and social environment too

[09:16] James at Lloud (lloud.laffer): /-50 SKILL:3

[09:16] Namaara MacMoragh: in addition to working here I love living er playing here

[09:16] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): And those connections are enhanced by this experience of shared space…

[09:16] James at Lloud (lloud.laffer): /me says ooops

[09:16] Namaara MacMoragh: yes Jerry

[09:16] Namaara MacMoragh: 🙂

[09:16] fate Paule: i apologize if I missed any questions

[09:17] Namaara MacMoragh: any other thoughts? questions? experiences? to share

[09:18] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): are there things you wish you could do in SL to support your target audience that we could pass along to the Linden Lab folks?

[09:18] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): So did I hear that there are inworld support groups connecting those with TBI?

[09:19] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Along with connecting caregivers…

[09:19] Namaara MacMoragh: @Jerry yes

[09:19] Gentle Heron: Yes Jerry, come visit the Path of Support and we can point them out.

[09:19] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Excellent, thank you

[09:20] Namaara MacMoragh: I’ve loved being here today. And again, thank you to NPC, VAI, BEST, Zinnia… everyone for working with us this month (and for the past three years) to make SL such a vital part of how we connect

[09:20] Namaara MacMoragh: Oh

[09:20] Namaara MacMoragh: Rick… re LL

[09:20] fate Paule: I think that Gentle has created a great service through virtual abilities island

[09:20] DyVerse Steele (dyverse): Rah! Gentle

[09:20] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you guys! You do so much and it is wonderful to be part of the team!

[09:20] Namaara MacMoragh: There are a number of things I can share with you… I’ll IM or email you.

[09:20] fate Paule: sl can be somewhat ovwerwhelming at first, so ease of use is important

[09:20] Buffy Beale: Gentle rocks!

[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): for sure, fate

[09:20] Namaara MacMoragh: VAI has an easy way to bring new users into SL

[09:21] Christopher Saldana: Speaking of which I have redone the Wounded Warrior SL Vet Center, and would like to get with those whom would like to connect to the island

[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Christopher, that’s great

[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): what is the SLURL?

[09:21] Buffy Beale: It’s too bad they can’t ban the emoticons that spit out lines and lines of characters at events, I always remember Gentle saying how hard that is for people with disabilities

[09:21] Namaara MacMoragh: Chris, I’d love to talk more with you about March and mutual promotion, too.

[09:22] fate Paule: wonderful Christopher i’ll have to check it out again

[09:22] Christopher Saldana: awesome, sorry please I don’t want to take away from anything here, I would love to share what we do after this.

[09:23] fate Paule: yes buffy, things like flashing dancefloors and signs can give some of us migrains or seizures

[09:23] Namaara MacMoragh: great Chris…

[09:23] fate Paule: but the beauty of sl is that I can control this

[09:23] fate Paule: and still dance 🙂

[09:23] Buffy Beale: yes and yay for that 🙂

[09:23] Namaara MacMoragh: 🙂

[09:23] Gentle Heron: /me knows how to turn off particles because of visual issues in SL

[09:23] Namaara MacMoragh: I like techno… fate can’t do it

[09:24] fate Paule: hehe

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: I get to listen to my tunes. She to hers and we can hang out in the same clubs

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: lol

[09:24] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): lol 🙂

[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): nice

[09:24] Buffy Beale: lol

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: particles are the same thing, yes Gentle

[09:24] Zinnia Zauber: This are important issues that people might want to learn more about.

[09:24] Gentle Heron: That’s one advantage of virtual worlds…. adaptability.

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: okay… Rick is up

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: think I should sit

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: lol

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: thank you again for letting me present today.

[09:24] Namaara MacMoragh: 🙂

[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Thanks Namaara, that was really inspiring!

[09:24] Buffy Beale: Thanks Namaara, and to Eme and Fate and Gentle for all you do

[09:25] James at Lloud (lloud.laffer): Claps Very Loudly!!!!

[09:25] James at Lloud (lloud.laffer): clap

[09:25] bulaklak: Really great stuff!

[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I love to hear these stories about how the NPC is facilitating collaborations among our members!

[09:25] Chad Mikado: applause

[09:25] Gentle Heron: Great information Namaara and Fate.

[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): as well as all the great work being done to help real people with real needs

[09:26] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): @Rik, Exactly!

[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): please be in touch with Namaara if you ahve further questions or want to help out

[09:26] Namaara MacMoragh: definitely IM me

[09:26] Namaara MacMoragh: and friend me… it’s the easiest way for me to keep up

[09:26] Namaara MacMoragh: (promise not to spam you)

[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): and now its your turn to share with the community any relevant events, news, announcements from your group

[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): its Open Mic

[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Who has something to share?

[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): please put up your appendage and I’ll call on you

[09:27] Gentle Heron: I do Rik. Three things, and one is an NPC collaboration.

[09:27] Zinnia Zauber: Yay! Looking forward to it!

[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thanks for th reminder Carl!

[09:27] Gentle Heron: Thanks for sharing that Carl… I bet several NPCers are going to present.

[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: I have one, please.

[09:28] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I’d love for someone from VWBPE to present here about plans for this years conference

[09:28] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Ok Gentle and then Zinnia

Voting for Your Favorite Stories in TechSoup’s Digital Storytelling Challenge

Here’s an update on the TechSoup Storytelling Challenge, for those of you that submitted and those who want to supports others who did submit. We are happy to announce that “Audience Choice Awards” are now open for voting through Sunday, March 11 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Thank you so much for your patience as we worked through some technical issues. So, without further adieu… Here’s How it Works:

  • · Go to TSDigs.org
  • Select “Vote for Video” or “Vote for Photo Sets”
  • Find your favorite organization by the name of the person who submitted the video or photo set, not the organization.
  • Vote! (If you happen to encounter a “parsererror” message, simply click OK and you will still get through.)

Some Tips and Guidelines:

  • You can vote more than once and for more than one video – but please use this privilege wisely! We hope to see you use this to support fellow nonprofit and social good storytellers. (We’ll be on the lookout for spammers and the like.)
  • Videos or photo entries that went over the required length or otherwise did not meet submission guidelines have been removed from the voting and judging. However, they will be included on our YouTube playlist and Flickr sets (coming soon!).

The Prizes!

  • Top voted video will receive an iPad 2, compliments of our contest platform Blazon!
  • Top voted photo will receive a Red Hot Lytro camera, thanks to SurveyMonkey!
  • We’ll also be selecting a handful of notable entries to screen at our Awards Ceremony in San Francisco, March 28!

Good luck!

The Wise Words of Widget Whiteberry

widget whiteberry of "virtually speaking" at NPC

Last Friday, February 24th, Widget Whiteberry from Virtually Speaking eloquently addressed the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life about issues relating to our current models of information gathering and sharing, the evolution of broadcast media, and how going virtual is a viable way to report experiences in real time while delivering a more inclusive and participatory experience for news audiences.

Below are excerpts from her presentation…

In the Great Depression, radio was the social glue that held America together. Soon after, in the global conflict of World War II, it was the glue that held the world together. In the 1950s television emerged, and became the new hearth around which people gathered, not just a source of information, but a platform for community. Today the Internet has made that same profound shift from source of information to source of connection: social media have become the ties that bind. In this last decade social media and blogs have been instrumental in the emergence of political movements. Flash mobs brought down a government in Spain and the citizen uprising in Iran into our daily experience. And now worldwide Occupy Assemblies. This is only the beginning.

Archimedes famously said – “Give me a lever and a place to stand and I can move the world.” Communication through social media is becoming the lever of choice for political action. Within that context, many find a place to stand to both hone and deliver messages born of experience, dialog and introspection. Virtually Speaking provides a platform to authors and other leaders, a source of political culture and ways to create community among early adopters of the latest generation.

In March 2007, Jay Ackroyd and Jordan Bigel took on a challenging project: how to bring the experience of attending a summer conference in Chicago to persons who, for reasons of personal economics or health or competing time demands, could not attend in person. The conference, Yearly Kos, appealed to progressive political, social, cultural and environmental activists who were active and quite vocal through online communications. Jay asked himself: What tools were available to not only report the experience in real time, which bloggers were able to do, or send broadcasts, which C-SPAN and other media were providing, but deliver a participatory experience?

They created Virtually Speaking with Jay Ackroyd. Since then, we’ve had 200 guests and more than 400 episodes. The number of episodes produced each year has grown from 16 in 2007 to 213 in 2011. Beginning March, we’ll be airing 5 each week. Social media enables all that.

Virtually Speaking has definitely carved out a significant niche for itself in the comfy corners of Second Life.  The Nonprofit Commons’ own mentors are doing the same. Last week, they reported from Mentor’s Central on admirable uses of virtual worlds.

Zinnia Zauber: We want to share some positive success stories and encouraging ways to explain what wonderful things actually happen here. When any of us are successful, we all benefit.

Brena Benoir: This morning our discussion relates to many things we have discussed in recent meetings and how we explain our work here in SL. I am sure many of us has encountered the awkwardness that comes with trying to explain what SL is to someone unfamiliar with Virtual World technology. Often times we are faced with confusion, dumbfoundedness, counters that it’s all about sex. For me SL and other virtual worlds are a part of my daily life. You see for me, my RL work occurs in Virtual World settings.

Brena Benoir: This has become possible through Preferred Family Healthcare (PFH) being open and willing to pursue innovative technology to assist persons with Substance Abuse treatment. In May 2008, Dick Dillion, then Senior VP of Planning and Development at PFH, worked with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to examine the idea of using virtual world technology to assist with substance abuse treatment outcomes. They looked at both benefits and barriers of using technology, specifically SL, to provide substance abuse treatment. This became a foundational research piece that became the basis of several grants that PFH has pursued to utilize virtual worlds for treatment purposes.

Brena Benoir: A parent shared their appreciation for their child’s participation in our first virtual world treatment program by stating, “I feel like I have my child back prior to drug use.”

Angelle Marquette: That’s pretty marvelous.

Brena Benoir: This is one example of how I counter those approaches where people are skeptical or resistant to look at the benefits of virtual worlds. There is something in SL for fit any mindset one has. If a person wants to work a recovery program and be involved in 12 step programs that is available here in SL. If a person wants to pursue education, that is available here in SL too. The point is, the way to motivate people to get involved in SL and help them stay engaged once they get here is find out what they want to connect to or get involved with. Go out of your way to help them engage and feel the immersion. We are advocates for what we do here and we need to be the front line ambassadors for teaching the world about the real value of virtual world technology.

Join us this Friday at the Plush Nonprofit Commons amphitheater (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Plush%20Nonprofit%20Commons/88/126/26) at 8:30am PST for more discussions of innovative and admirable uses of Second Life in our digital age.
