Why is your organization in Second Life?

We’re exporing the use of Second Life as part of our larger strategy for social networking and community building

What would you recommend that npos in sl check out?
Other non-profits should check out, obvioulsy, the non profit commons space, but also The Bay and Better World Island and Ubuntu. Also Angela Eclipse’s Take Action! shop

What advice to get started?

Ask for help, even if you have technology resources… SL is a microcosm of the real world and takes a good bit of effort to live in. Many tools are already available to help, the trick is finding them.

iCommons Summit streamed to SL June 14-17

The iCommons Summit in Dubrovnik, Croatia brings together pioneers of the free Internet “to make sure that, at its crossroads, we guide the world along a path that will enable the kind of free culture and decentralized innovation that has characterized the early years of the Internet.” The summit will occur in parallel in-world at the USC Annenberg Public Diplomacy Island (teleport SLURL). Looks like a really great event, with amazing speakers, important topics, and fun entertainment planned.

The Complete program is available here.

MacArthur Foundation: Virtual World Event on philanthropy on June 22nd

Jonathanfanton
MacArthur Foundation President Jonathan Fanton

On June 22nd at 9:00 AM PST,  Jonathan’s avatar along with Second Life CEO Philip Rosedale  will lead a discussion with residents on the role of philanthropy in virtual worlds.

I believe that the importance of virtual worlds may be less about their growth as economies, and more about their capacity for collaboration and human development.  Activities in virtual worlds
already are supported by MacArthur and other foundations, but we have much to discover about the right role for philanthropy itself in virtual worlds.

We are interested in learning about virtual worlds and how to operate within them.  We look to the residents to help us determine how to be helpful and are eager to share our on-going work in such areas as affordable housing, urban renewal, and human rights and international justice.

The details are here.  There will be a live audio feed.

It will be interesting to see if Fanton’s avatar looks just like him or something different.

Edited Chat Log and Submitted Questions at Virtual Activism Panel at Games for Change

virtual activism panel in SL
On June 11, 2007, about 30 avatars gathered in the Plush Non-commons Sim to participate in a mixed-reality event – a panel discussion on virtual activism with Glitteractica Cookie ofTechSoup, In Kenzo of Amoration, Jeska Linden of Linden Labs, and Beth Kanter as moderator. Rik Riel was the in-world moderator of the event, and Nexeus Fatale provided tech support.

While Jeska Linden was not able to speak at the real world event, due to Skype stream issues, she was present in-world and answered several questions and commented on the other speaker’s talks. Thanks for being a trooper, Jeska!

Our thanks to everyone for their understanding of the technical challenges of putting on such an event. This is a learning process for all of us, and we hope you got something valuable out of participating. Please find the full list of submitted questions and a gently edited chatlog of the in-world portion of the event.

Submitted Questions

  • Jackson Soderstrom: Can you talk about how you foresee nonprofits partnering with for profits in SL and how that will benefit both parties?
  • Ozma Malibu: How did you choose the nonprofits for the NPC?

  • Jani Myrian: Does TechSoup have plans for SL efforts besides the NPC?
  • globalkids Bixby: is fundraising within a game-like virtual world viable?
  • Malin Dahlstrom: What are the tracking tools available in Second Life? How does it work?

  • DevilMayCare Jetaime: i see sl as the equalizer for small not for profits — who have NO inhouse resources -no it staff — but but get lost in the “techiness” what more is planned to allow us not to be burried by the cancerr societies than can do 6 month fundraisers – which seems to use us availabila ‘tech” and “heart” resources?

[7:50] Jeska Linden: Oh someone has to have a question!
[7:50] Vivienne Cassavetes: my question too!
[7:50] Rik Riel: please don’t click teh slides

[7:50] Rik Riel: did yo uhave a question? I didn’t get it
[7:50] Jeska Linden: There are lots of tools for land owners to help with griefing
[7:50] Ruby Glitter: Just like trolls, ignoring is the best medecine.
[7:51] Sky Clymer: go green lanters πŸ™‚
[7:52] Rik Riel: questions? anyone? come one avatars?

    [7:52] Jeska Linden: No!
[7:52] Jeska Linden: No trolls, that was a recommendation
[7:52] Ruby Glitter: No, I’m saying griefers are like trolls.
[7:52] Jeska Linden: See – ignore the trolls!
[7:52] Kopilo Hallard: will voice be able to mute people?
[7:53] Jeska Linden: Yes – you wil be able to mute voice
[7:53] Bhikku Beeks: I imagine so.
    [7:53] Jeska Linden: Nice!
[7:53] Ozma Malibu: We seem to be developing a sort of SL netiquette to deal with trolls
    [7:53] Jeska Linden: That’s very cool πŸ™‚
[7:53] Sky Clymer: 6 or 7out of how many?
[7:53] Ruby Glitter: Rik, pls tell them we don’t have a troll. peopel are scared enough of SL already.
[7:53] Rik Riel: I’ll amend that . sorry
[7:53] Rik Riel: I’ve got a lot going on right now.
    [7:53] Ruby Glitter: Sorry, I understand. πŸ™‚
[7:53] Ping Rau: I’m one of them – that is “here” AND “in the room”
    [7:54] Kopilo Hallard: lol
[7:54] DevilMayCare Jetaime: /could speakers please id themselves aas they talk??????]
    [7:54] Jeska Linden: That’s Beth I think
[7:54] Jeska Linden: Susan is talking now
[7:54] Rik Riel: I’ll see what I can do
[7:54] ChrisMelissinos SunMicrosystems: Correct, that’s Beth
[7:54] Bhikku Beeks: In kenzo is talking about the tech soup group.
    [7:54] Vivienne Cassavetes: 231
[7:54] Jeska Linden: No – this is Glitteractica
    [7:54] Bhikku Beeks: Wiat
    [7:54] Bhikku Beeks: sorry,
    [7:54] Bhikku Beeks: Thanks Jeska.
[7:54] Jeska Linden: Second Life has a strong volunteeer community
    [7:55] ChrisMelissinos SunMicrosystems: Correc πŸ™‚
[7:55] Jeska Linden: In the past, I worked directly with in-world volunteers and they are VERY helpful!
[7:55] Jani Myriam: Question: Does TechSoup have plans for SL efforts besides the NPC?
[7:55] Malin Dahlstrom: Rik: I have a question. What are the tracking tools available in Second Life? How does it work?
    [7:55] Rik Riel: “tracking”?
[7:55] Kopilo Hallard: there are limited tracking tools in sl
[7:55] Rik Riel: could you clarify?
    [7:56] Gerrick Gordimer: metrics?
[7:56] globalkids Bixby: Rik – I have a question: is fundraising within a game-like virtual world viable?
[7:56] Jeska Linden: You are able to gather metrics – for example you can keep track of who is on your land
[7:56] Malin Dahlstrom: What can be tracked currently. The number of avatars?
[7:56] Jeska Linden: You can also do interesting things with linking to the web – which has a much more robust metric/tracking capability
[7:56] Kopilo Hallard: you can only do that with scripting devices and it can only be used on two types of land
[7:57] Kopilo Hallard: land you own and land you can build w/o autoreturn
[7:57] Annie Octavia: many of the orgs here are interested in longitudinal metrics
[7:57] Jeska Linden: So for example, if you create a “special” URL that is only available in-world you could use it to track how many people are clicking thru
[7:57] Rik Riel: I’ll raise it
    [7:58] Annie Octavia: absolutely
[7:58] Rebus Mandelbrot: what do you mean by longitudinal metrics?
[7:58] Ruby Glitter: Social change doesn’t really lend itself well to metrics.
[7:58] Troy McLuhan: There are a number of startup businesses designing tools to help you track usage and visitors in great detail. Example: http://mayarealities.com/
[7:58] Ozma Malibu: My group does tech outreach in RL, so I knew of Techsoup before I came into SL, and we were so glad to see them!
[7:59] Jeska Linden: Ozma – yes, TechSoup is a great resource for Nonprofits
[7:59] Jeska Linden: It’s great to see them in-world
[[7:59] Kopilo Hallard: yes, definatly thorugh the website
[8:00] Gerrick Gordimer: If anyone would like to JOIN the G4C group please IM Me
[8:00] Jeska Linden: Nope, not on the $100 laptop yet – but there have been some interesting open source hacks with the client
[8:00] Jeska Linden: Including Cell Phone access
[8:00] Sky Clymer: how can we join nonprofit commons group?
[8:00] Jeska Linden: Sky – I believe it’s an open group
[8:00] Jeska Linden: Go to Search and look up “Tech Soup”
[8:00] Sky Clymer: not open enrollment
    [8:00] Kopilo Hallard giggles
[8:00] Jeska Linden: Sky – ping Glitteractica
    [8:00] Sky Clymer: thanks Jeska
[8:00] Veri Oddfellow: Is nonprofit commons joinable?
[8:00] Rik Riel: Techsoup is an open group. NP commons is restricted to non-profits with HQs in the commons
[8:01] Ozma Malibu: We are homebased tech outreach as well but have a CTC now. It is important cos otherwise members of our group would not have access.
    [8:01] Sky Clymer: thanks Rik
[8:01] Veri Oddfellow: ahhh .t hanks
[8:01] Kopilo Hallard: I believe npc is mainly for the people with offices in the area
[8:01] Gerrick Gordimer: Games4Change is also OPEN
[8:01] Rik Riel: that’s right. techsoup is the public group
[8:02] Jeska Linden: We’ve been having a lovely discussion πŸ˜‰
[8:02] Ruby Glitter: Gerrick, I’d like to join the G4C group.
[8:02] Rebus Mandelbrot: will the audio of this discussion be available?
    [8:02] Sky Clymer: great question
[8:03] DevilMayCare Jetaime: /Work with the libraries to ahve sl accss for non-access populations
    [8:03] Sky Clymer: wow
[8:04] DevilMayCare Jetaime: so confusing noty knowing who is speaki
[8:04] Annie Octavia: this is evonne
[8:04] Rik Riel: sorry this is In K
    [8:04] Vivienne Cassavetes: really!!
[8:04] Vivienne Cassavetes: any way to see who is talking??
[8:04] Rik Riel: We don’t have video sorry
[8:04] Kopilo Hallard: no this is streamed
[8:04] DevilMayCare Jetaime: ask them to id themselves
[8:04] Rik Riel: only audio streams
[8:04] Vivienne Cassavetes: could they please id themselves then
[8:04] Rik Riel: I’m away from the panel, but I can id

    [8:05] Gerrick Gordimer: Great Rik
[8:05] Sky Clymer: thanks for pics
[8:06] Vivienne Cassavetes: be good if they said their name before speaking
[8:06] Rik Riel: ooo a tip, thanks!
    [8:06] Jani Myriam: $450,000 = ~119,700,000 L$
    [8:06] Kopilo Hallard: your welcome
    [8:07] Kopilo Hallard: 100?
[8:07] Troy McLuhan: I wish we could all talk to each other about the missions of our nonprofits
[8:07] Ruby Glitter: But there are a lot of activist groups, too!
    [8:08] Kopilo Hallard: lmao
    [8:08] Vivienne Cassavetes: outreach??
[8:08] Ruby Glitter: Troy, that would be a good activity for the Friday gatherings.
[8:08] Jeska Linden: Anyone else have questions in-world?
[8:08] Jeska Linden: Hey that’s me!
[8:08] Vivienne Cassavetes: how do you do outreach?
[8:09] Vivienne Cassavetes: ex: i have 2 nonprofits and haven’t heard of you!
[8:09] Rik Riel: carla, if you are going to hog the camera, you need to dance or something
[8:09] ChrisMelissinos SunMicrosystems: Hey duck, please sit down
[8:09] Ruby Glitter: Vivienne, how did you get there if you haven’t heard of the NPC?
[8:09] Jeska Linden covers her ears
[8:09] Vivienne Cassavetes: through evonne in a group
    [8:09] Jeska Linden: πŸ˜‰
[8:10] Sky Clymer: peer to peer πŸ™‚
    [8:10] Kopilo Hallard: communal building
[8:11] DevilMayCare Jetaime: /yess – i see sl as the equalizer for small not for profits — who have NO inhouse resources -no it staff — but but get lost in the “techiness” what more is planned to allow us not to be burried by the cancerr societies than can do 6 month fundraisers – which seems to use us availabila ‘tech” and “heart” resources?
[8:11] Rik Riel: stream is dead!
[8:11] Glitteractica Cookie’s tail begins to sway happily back and forth.
[8:12] Troy McLuhan: I hear someone faintly
[8:12] Kopilo Hallard: come close to the mix
    [8:12] Kopilo Hallard: mic
[8:12] Jani Myriam: I can hear but volume is low

    [8:12] Gerrick Gordimer: yes
[8:12] Jeska Linden: He’s asking about how when non-profits first started using the web it was to just get the word out. In SL it’s obvious that nonprofits are doing things differently
[8:13] Rik Riel: this is Glitter
[8:13] Kopilo Hallard: it’s a social platform not gaming
    [8:14] Troy McLuhan: 8)
[8:14] Rik Riel: SL is not a game! (or it’s a verhy poorly planned game)
    [8:14] Troy McLuhan: LOL
    [8:14] Kopilo Hallard: lmao
[8:14] Rik Riel: with no goal, points, and bosses to beat
[8:15] Gerrick Gordimer: it is a game like Life is a game
    [8:15] Kopilo Hallard: lmao
[8:15] Gerrick Gordimer: not Life the game though
[8:15] Gerrick Gordimer: which is a game
[8:15] Troy McLuhan: Life the breakfast cereal?
[8:15] Kopilo Hallard: life is the name of a game… let’s not go there
    [8:15] Aisling Sinclair: hey mikey!
[8:15] Rik Riel: who is running my Real Life avatar Rik Panganiban?
[8:15] DevilMayCare Jetaime: *wish my parents had play a different “game”
[8:15] Gerrick Gordimer: SL is a game and a cereal
[8:15] Kopilo Hallard: is it yummy?
[8:15] Jeska Linden: Thanks everyone! πŸ™‚
[8:16] Aisling Sinclair: breakfast of champions
    [8:16] Kopilo Hallard: thank you
[8:16] Gerrick Gordimer: Again, if anyone wants a TEE SHIRT IM ME

[8:16] Gerrick Gordimer: thank you everyone!!!!
[8:16] Gerrick Gordimer: it was great!
[8:16] Rik Riel: sorry for not getting to every question. But I will relay to the speakers
[8:16] Ruby Glitter: Thanks for the audio.
    [8:16] Kopilo Hallard: *pokes oz*
[8:16] Jani Myriam: Thanks for including us! πŸ™‚
[8:16] Rebus Mandelbrot: thanks — good discussion

[8:17] Malin Dahlstrom: Thank you. I really enjoyed it.
[8:17] Rik Riel: particularly about metrics and griefers
    [8:17] Jani Myriam goes *POOF*
    [8:17] Jeska Linden: Later!
[8:17] Johnny Austin: thanks everyone and the panelists, great job
    [8:17] Adalace Jewell: hi everyone
[8:17] Adalace Jewell: sorry i’m late
[8:17] Kopilo Hallard: I think with griefers is that people have to accept them as apart of the community and be responsible around them
[8:17] Johnny Austin: Rik did some nice work on the sides, awesome
[8:18] Cerulean Vesperia: is the session being archived somewhere?
[8:18] Malin Dahlstrom: What was up with that duck?

[8:18] Cerulean Vesperia: what’s wrong with ducks? πŸ™‚
[8:18] Thursday Xu: Adalace, did you hear that we will start back up in 25 minutes?
    [8:18] Kopilo Hallard: lol
[8:19] Sky Clymer: is any more of Games for Change conference being streamed in SL?
    [8:19] Adalace Jewell: no,

Furnishing No No’s

I was working on trying to furnish the WESTAF office last night. I looked into the "object" containing all manner of lamps and lights and quite by accident clothed myself with a myriad of lighting objects in one fell swoop. This was the outcome…

Aggregators

Aggregators are tools that allow you to access the RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feeds from different sites.Β  You can tell that a site has a feed if you see this icon on the page.Β  Aggregators allow you to mix the feeds from many sites into a single place.Β  In other words, no need to surf when an aggregator can deliver the content to your desktop.
Some of my favourite aggregators include:

  1. Drupal has its own built in aggregator.Β  I’m including it because of the overall utility of Drupal as a content management tool
  2. Netvibes is a truly fabulous aggregation site allowing for all kinds of mixing and matching of information
  3. NewsLife is an OSX 10.4 only aggregator that tries to simplify the interface and make reading feeds more intuitive.
  4. Bloglines is a great aggregator/organizer of feeds.
  5. Feeddemon is a desktop application that costs a little money (about $30), but is one of the most powerful and sophisticated readers out there.

If you spend much time reading news sites, blogs, and wikis and want to save some time, a reader is an invaluable tool.

Details on Yehoodi’s HQ in the Plush Non-profit sim

Yehoodihq0607_002

So over the past couple of months, I’ve been slowly building up my swing dance non-profit Yehoodi’s in-world presence in Second Life, experimenting with our new headquarters in the Plush Non-profit sim (teleport SLURL.)  It’s been a good learning experience for us, helping us strategize about our longer term goals in SL.

Avatars fly to end multiple sclerosis this Sunday!

Msfly_001

This sunday, the National MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society is partnering with Scion and MovieTickets.com on a fundraiser to support the millions who suffer from the debilitating disease of MS. Scheduled from June 10-17, the "MS FLY" is the virtual equivalent of the annual "MS WALK" that takes place all around the United States.  More than just a
"fly-a-thon" though, the fundraiser is designed as an interactive adventure:

Participate in this exciting and cause-worthy event on a week-long
scavenger hunt as you journey through the virtual world of Second Life
with your avatar and MS Cape.  Scour islands for digital tokens that
grant you completion of one phase of the hunt.  With each new digital
token acquired comes a new incentive for the participant and more money
to help end MS.

Virtual Walk-a-thons are fun, but I love the idea of really using the powerful and evocative capabilities of virtual worlds to re-think the traditional fundraiser event.  This seems like a step (sorry) in the right direction.

Head to Illusion Factory (Teleport SLURL) to register in-world or www.themsfly.org on the interweb.
