TECHSOUP ANNOUNCEMENTS
[08:40] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Thanks – let’s move on to TechSoup Announcements.
[08:40] Rhiannon Chatnoir: And if you just joined us, feel free to announce yourself as we go πŸ™‚
[08:40] bulaklak: Happy Friday, folks! Great to see everyone.
[08:40] Chayenn: good morning Bulaklak
[08:40] bulaklak: Hi, Chay!
[08:40] bulaklak: Just a few things today.
[08:41] bulaklak: As you probably know, TechSoup is a global nonprofit with partners in many countries.
[08:41] bulaklak: We’ve just recently added a new partner in Austria and we are excited to welcome them.
[08:42] bulaklak: Through our German partner Stifter-helfen.de and a partnership with Fundraising Verband, we will now be offering software to Austrian NGOs
[08:42] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Very cool πŸ™‚
[08:43] bulaklak: More about that here: http://bit.ly/T9utFe
[08:43] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Super
[08:44] bulaklak: And speaking of our global partners, our partners in Romania are excited to be launching a second round of its ReStart Campaign
[08:44] bulaklak: the ReStart Romania campaign addresses government corruption by opening a challenge to the community to create projects to address what they see as the most pressing issues
[08:44] Veri Oddfellow: Does that make it ReReStart?
[08:44] bulaklak: Lol
[08:44] bulaklak: yes
[08:45] bulaklak: ReReStart RoRoMania
[08:45] Veri Oddfellow: *grins*
[08:45] Coughran Mayo: ReReRoStart
[08:45] Veri Oddfellow: Oooo … I hear a dance tune coming outta that. *chuckles*
[08:45] Orange Planer: Already exists.
[08:45] Claudia LAmoreaux
[08:45] Orange Planer: A little three-part tune called (wait for it….)
[08:46] Orange Planer: Row Row Row Your Boat.
[08:46] bulaklak: this year it has expanded to include the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and next spring will launch in the Balkans
[08:46] bulaklak: our co-CEO Daniel Ben-Horin wrote a piece in the Huffington Post reflecting on one winner from last year’s challenge
[08:46] bulaklak: you can read that here
[08:46] bulaklak: http://huff.to/OlYEMm
[08:47] bulaklak: Please feel free to comment there if it strikes you. It’s a pretty cool story as the winner was a non-techie, non-hacker who just happened to be very passionate about one issue
[08:47] bulaklak: I think it’s pretty inspiring!
[08:47] bulaklak: And that’s all I’ve got for today.
[08:47] bulaklak: Enjoy the meeting and have a great weekend!
[08:48] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Thanks bulaklad!
[08:48] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Thanks bulaklak

— MENTOR’S CENTRAL —
[08:48] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Next up we have Mentor’s Central!
[08:48] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Today for Mentor Central we have Jen speaking to us – welcome her up and please start whenever your ready.!
[08:49] Gentle Heron: YAY Jen!
[08:49] Jen (jenelle.levenque): setnote 1
[08:49] Zinnia Zauber: Rah Jen!
[08:49] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Hi everyone
[08:49] Veri Oddfellow: *wave*
[08:49] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Today I want to talk about the tool box you can get from Techsoup
[08:50] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Now everyone knows how shy I am about speaking up
[08:50] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: Created 120718  Revised 121008
[08:50] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: Nonprofit Commons Mentor’s Corner
[08:50] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: by Jenelle Levenque
[08:50] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA)
[08:50] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Hey Jen πŸ™‚
[08:50] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: How many of you know who stops by your office and how many when it isn’t tended?
[08:50] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Do any of you know who stops by?
[08:50] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Do you keep track?
[08:50] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Yup πŸ™‚
[08:51] Gentle Heron: On our islands, yes.
[08:51] Jen (jenelle.levenque): good for you Jerry
[08:51] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: How many of you can give your board some statistics about your impact in SL?
[08:51] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Thanks. It’s a great tool πŸ™‚
[08:51] Jen (jenelle.levenque): This is something that got me to spring some dollars from my board to support us here in SL
[08:51] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: For those of you who don’t already use it, I’m going to introduce you to a tool in the NPC – Tools in a Box.
[08:51] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: A. Purpose
[08:51] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     To introduce you to a useful tool the “NPC – Visitor Counter with email function” The description states it “Detects avatars and keeps time.
[08:52] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I know this tool is used here to record who attends the meetings here
[08:52] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: B. Functions of the Visitor Counter
[08:52] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     1) Detect an avatar within a range set by the owner.
[08:52] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     2) Check for avatar presence on a time interval set by owner.
[08:52] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     3) Record the name of the avatar and the time, SLT.
[08:52] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     4) Record the name only one time. If an avatar leaves and returns, the name is recorded one time.
[08:53] Jen (jenelle.levenque): So each name is a unique AV for that day
[08:53] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Even if they come by several times, they are only recorded once
[08:53] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     5) Maintain the “name” of the location.
[08:53] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I have several locations so I use it elsewhere
[08:54] Jen (jenelle.levenque): This allows me to see which location people are coming to
[08:54] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     6) Send the list to an email address at an appropriate interval. When list is emailed, the list will be reset.
[08:54] Jen (jenelle.levenque): This is pretty cool as the list can show up in your email
[08:54] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: C. Commands
[08:54] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     1) “say list”
[08:54] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) If you are in chat range, the script will say the list to local chat. This will let you see who has been in your office.
[08:54] Jen (jenelle.levenque): It only seems to listen at chat range
[08:55] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I’ve tried shouting and it ignored me
[08:55] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Kinda like kids
[08:55] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     2) “reset list”
[08:55] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) clears the list and starts over.
[08:55] Rhiannon Chatnoir: lol
[08:55] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     3) “email list”
[08:55] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) to send the list via email and clear the list.
[08:55] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): πŸ˜‰
[08:55] Jen (jenelle.levenque): The email can go on schedule, say once an hour or once a day
[08:55] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Or you can force it to send the email
[08:56] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Or you can just skip this function totally
[08:56] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         b) The email address must be in the script.
[08:56] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     4) “help”
[08:56] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) will give you a list of the commands.
[08:56] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         b) Only the owner may use the Counter commands.
[08:56] Jen (jenelle.levenque): It’s picky about who it gives the list to
[08:56] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: D. Notes
[08:56] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     1) Remember it searches a radius
[08:56] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) The office may have “blind spots” such as the corners of the office since the tool searches a circular pattern.
[08:57] Orange Planer: Make a circular office.
[08:57] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Since it uses a radius, configurable in the script, it actually searches a sphere
[08:57] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Yep that’ll work Orange
[08:57] Carla Broek: make a sphere office:)
[08:57] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         b) may record avatars outside your office.
[08:57] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): I like spherical office spaces πŸ™‚
[08:57] Rhiannon Chatnoir: not enough spherical offices in the world πŸ™‚
[08:57] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Depending on the radius you could pick up passers by
[08:58] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I’ll have to try that
[08:58] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     2) There are other tools that may provide this functionality, but this one is first, free.
[08:58] Orange Planer: Great for my dating scene.
[08:58] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     3) The script is full perms so you can modify it to suit yourself.
[08:58] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) You will have to edit the script to provide the necessary configuration information.
[08:58] Jen (jenelle.levenque): If you do tinker with the functionality, please let us know
[08:58] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         b) Should you modify the script, please share with your neighbors at Nonprofit Commons.
[08:58] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     4) I use it to record the names of people who come by the office.
[08:59] Jen (jenelle.levenque): It also records my volunteers when they show up
[08:59] Jen (jenelle.levenque): In addition, it will provide the time
[08:59] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) The owner’s name will not be recorded.
[08:59] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     5) I look up the avatars
[08:59] Jen (jenelle.levenque): This is how I use it
[08:59] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) I send them a personal IM thanking them for stopping by.
[08:59] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         b) I give them our business card.
[08:59] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         c) If the avatar is less than 60 days, I also offer to help them with their Second Life questions.
[08:59] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: E) Summary
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     1) Make a record of your visitors and contact those who come by while no one is in the office.
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:     2) You will find other very useful tools in the tool box.
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         a) Take a look and find those that are useful to you,
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         b) Questions? Ask your local neighborhood mentor.
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         c) Share your thoughts and ideas with us.
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:         d) More on other tools later.
[09:00] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Great idea; personalizes outreach… πŸ™‚
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: Thank you
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD: Any questions?
[09:00] Jenelle’s Presentation HUD:
[09:00] Gentle Heron: If you like a tool in the ToolBox, please consider sharing about it as a future Mentor Corner presentation!
[09:00] Zinnia Zauber: Yes! We would love to have you present!
[09:01] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I’ll be doing a presentation on the presentation tools later
[09:01] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Thanks
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you, Jen! This was wonderful!
[09:01] Orange Planer thinks “Where’s my virtual screwdriver kit….”
[09:01] Zinnia Zauber: Yay!
[09:01] Gentle Heron: Thank you Jen for sharing about your use of the avatar counter tool
[09:01] Rhiannon Chatnoir: great stuff Jen!
[09:01] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Thanks Jen! πŸ™‚
[09:01] Andy Evans: Thanks!
[09:01] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Jen – Thanks for leading Mentors Central today!
[09:02] Tank Thibedeau (liltank.thibedeau): rah rah jen !!!!
[09:02] CarynTopia Silvercloud: if someone comes by once a day will they be recorded once a day?
[09:02] Jen (jenelle.levenque): There are some really neat tools
[09:02] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Yes
[09:02] Rhiannon Chatnoir: thanks for sharing
[09:02] Rhiannon Chatnoir: and..
[09:02] CarynTopia Silvercloud: thanks!
[09:02] Jen (jenelle.levenque): If they come by 4 times in a day, they will only show up on the list once
[09:02] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I’m averaging 5 people per day

— FEATURED PRESENTATION —
[09:02] Rhiannon Chatnoir: TIme for today’s featured presentation!
[09:02] CarynTopia Silvercloud: great
[09:02] Rhiannon Chatnoir: Welcome Jolanda Mastenbroek-Dobberaka aka JoJa Dhara in Second Life, who will speak to us about her experiences in virtual worlds, including her latest explorations into the web based virtual world Cloud Party (www.cloudpartytime.com), the upcoming MetaMeets conference (www.metameets.com), and her thoughts on the future of the 3D internet.
[09:03] Rhiannon Chatnoir: come up and grab a seat JoJa
[09:03] Rhiannon Chatnoir: JoJa has been involved in community management within virtual worlds since 2006 and is a social media consultant and evangelist for virtual worlds in The Netherlands. She is a lead organizer of the yearly European conference MetaMeets about virtual worlds, augmented reality and the 3D internet. This year’s MetaMeets will take place November 30-December 1, 2012.
[09:03] Orange Planer: Where can I find the toolkit?
[09:03] Gentle Heron: YAY JoJa! Glad you could come today.
[09:03] JoJa Dhara: thankyou and thank you for having me here
[09:03] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Toolkit is in the Techsoup office right behind us
[09:03] JoJa Dhara: Gosh..if you sum it up..what have we done in all these years πŸ˜‰
[09:04] Jen (jenelle.levenque): I think # 5
[09:04] Rhiannon Chatnoir: feel free to start when your ready
[09:04] Orange Planer: Thanks, Jen.
[09:04] JoJa Dhara: Ok… Welcome everybody and thank you for joining..and sorry for my english as you noticed I come from the Netherlands.
[09:05] Gentle Heron: Your English far exceeds my Dutch!
[09:05] Carla Broek: yes:)
[09:05] Rhiannon Chatnoir: so true Gentle
[09:05] JoJa Dhara: I joined SL in 2006 and I became intrested in long run with the business side of Virtual worlds …
[09:05] JoJa Dhara: (thks
[09:06] JoJa Dhara: became a community manager for a project called Our Virtual Holland…
[09:06] JoJa Dhara: by the ING bank
[09:07] JoJa Dhara: from their I learned a lot.. first ofcourse to be a community manager in a virtual world for a company but als the power of connecting with you all … Avatars people from different countries and backgrounds
[09:07] JoJa Dhara: and the most wonderfull of course is how we all work together
[09:08] JoJa Dhara: that got my intrest ..and sorry I can still not build and totally a technical..but I started to follow the human side of using virtual worlds
[09:08] Gentle Heron: JoJa is like me!
[09:08] Carla Broek confirms.
[09:08] JoJa Dhara: As you can see on this slide pictures are there from Virtual Holland and also pictures from other part of Europe and the world that we connected.
[09:09] JoJa Dhara: it was fiberant years from 2007 and 2008 as we all know … but unfortunate the hype went down
[09:09] JoJa Dhara: and companies left
[09:09] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) nods.
[09:09] JoJa Dhara: still in the Netherlands a core group was connected and I brought them together to question ourselves
[09:10] Polaris Grayson: much like ibm
[09:10] JoJa Dhara: does virtual worlds have a future
[09:10] JoJa Dhara: so true…
[09:11] JoJa Dhara: so therefore I arranged a meeting and it was great to see that still people from IBM and PHilipsdesign joine together with education and artists and content creators and users like you and me
[09:11] JoJa Dhara: and ofcourse conclusion was…there is always a hype curve now it is time to develop
[09:11] Gentle Heron: The hype curve always goes up, then down… it’s what comes after that is important.
[09:11] Claudia LAmoreaux: What year was this meeting you describe, JoJo?
[09:12] Claudia LAmoreaux: JoJa. Sorry
[09:12] JoJa Dhara: 2008 spring
[09:12] Claudia LAmoreaux: thnx
[09:12] JoJa Dhara: noworry
[09:12] JoJa Dhara: the only thing that bothered us a bit is what goes inworld stays inworld
[09:13] JoJa Dhara: and there for our mission was to set up a kind of a SLCC in europe… so we can show the world outside the uses of virtual worlds…
[09:13] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko) nods.
[09:13] Rhiannon Chatnoir: πŸ™‚
[09:13] JoJa Dhara: we got great help of the group that created SLCC *wink to Rhiannon πŸ˜‰
[09:14] JoJa Dhara: only we had to deside for an organisation that wanted to help us to broaden our views
[09:14] JoJa Dhara: in case that it is not only about se cond life
[09:14] Rhiannon Chatnoir smiles
[09:14] JoJa Dhara: so in 2009 we had our first MetaMeets
[09:15] JoJa Dhara: In here you see some pictuers of metameets but also the force to connect the realwordl with the virtual
[09:15] JoJa Dhara: in the netherlands we got more cross media events like Admire
[09:15] JoJa Dhara: musicians from secondlife comming together and jam
[09:15] JoJa Dhara: and give a concert in reallife
[09:16] JoJa Dhara: but streamed to secondlife
[09:16] Claudia LAmoreaux: love cross media events. +1
[09:16] JoJa Dhara: also the MMIF MaMachinima festival
[09:16] Orange Planer: That almost sounds like a wrestling federation.
[09:17] JoJa Dhara: also you see a picture of an event as a remembrance day where we televise the real event into secondlife
[09:17] JoJa Dhara: and we all virtually remember the second world war victims and from later wars unfortnate
[09:17] JoJa Dhara: but it is great to join together even dutch that are from around the world can be still part of it
[09:18] JoJa Dhara: so on and on we try our best to connect with the reallworld
[09:19] JoJa Dhara: on this picture is an avatar of franco grid… after exploring SL ..we want wondering aorund the OPen SIms.. and it is amazing no and also intresting for education to have a world on your own
[09:19] JoJa Dhara: specially as secondlife as much they are advanged still age issues are there
[09:20] JoJa Dhara: and it is great to see their developments.. therefore in 2010 we really picked that subject up….
[09:20] JoJa Dhara: to see how many worlds are developing..
[09:20] JoJa Dhara: dream ofcourse if we can hop from world to world….
[09:21] JoJa Dhara: which is hard with SL..but ok the 3d party viewers helped us a bit
[09:21] Gentle Heron: a lovely dream
[09:21] Polaris Grayson: it is possible
[09:21] Polaris Grayson: pathfinder was working on it with hypergrid
[09:22] JoJa Dhara: Now we notice if you go to the reall world and tell them the power of virtual worlds but it is still though for some to join and unfortunate intrest is starting to go down….
[09:22] JoJa Dhara: so it is hard these days to get peoples interest.. but thks to Mesh we now can push a new topic
[09:22] JoJa Dhara: we all know this little friend
[09:22] JoJa Dhara: Flufee
[09:23] Gentle Heron: Flufee the Mesh Ambassador
[09:23] Zinnia Zauber: Yay Flufee!
[09:23] JoJa Dhara: it is great that Flufee explains in a playfulway hwo mesh can be used..and therefor a newe area is starting
[09:23] JoJa Dhara: specially as you can see you can print out flufee
[09:24] JoJa Dhara: I got one now as he will be an example for the next MetaMeets
[09:24] JoJa Dhara: I hope with flufee he can bring the knowdledge that you can create out side second life
[09:24] JoJa Dhara: and upload here but in more worlds
[09:24] JoJa Dhara: and you can print him out in 3D
[09:24] JoJa Dhara: this willb e a new market …and great for content creatos
[09:24] JoJa Dhara: creators
[09:25] JoJa Dhara: another example I have is Patrick MOya ..a french artist
[09:25] JoJa Dhara: He is using 3d programs to create outside and put his art in different worlds
[09:25] Claudia LAmoreaux: the first 3D printed object I saw was Pathfinder’s avatar back some years ago. πŸ˜€ I like your thinking on this use case, JoJa.
[09:25] JoJa Dhara: you can find him in second life you can find him in open sim
[09:26] JoJa Dhara: and also now in Cloudparty
[09:26] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Wow, some really awesome possibilities for art in this… πŸ™‚
[09:26] JoJa Dhara: Yes indeed Claudia years ago there was a compnay that was printing out avatars..but unfortunate stops and fun to see it becomse now a topic
[09:27] JoJa Dhara: yes it is…and he created his avatar in sl as usb stick for instance
[09:27] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Would love a 3D print of some of the sculpture pieces I’ve experienced here…
[09:27] JoJa Dhara: and printed out some of his scluptures
[09:28] JoJa Dhara: In that case… this picture is an avatar in Cloudparty…a webgl based virtual world
[09:28] Claudia LAmoreaux: I think Jeroen is doing some 3D prints of his math sculputures. I’ve seen them on FB.
[09:28] Zinnia Zauber: I love being able to sell my virtual and physical apparel jointly!
[09:28] Rhiannon Chatnoir: I have seen some 3D printed originally virtual objects – great to see the virtual cross over to the physical world
[09:28] Polaris Grayson: would have been great for starax work
[09:28] Orange Planer: Mesh will definitely enable the printing of 3D objects.
[09:29] JoJa Dhara: @Polaris maybe hot news but someone is making a docu about starax…will be presented this year at MM
[09:29] JoJa Dhara: but true
[09:29] JoJa Dhara: Mesh gives a future
[09:29] JoJa Dhara: and with Cloudparty it makes a circle go round
[09:30] JoJa Dhara: Cloudparty they say will be the next sl but I dis agree
[09:30] JoJa Dhara: I see CP as a world that can show quickly to your friends what virtual worlds is about
[09:30] Polaris Grayson: nice ….hopefully they include his works as lightwaves
[09:30] JoJa Dhara: in case of Patrick Moya ..he created for a reallife exhibtion an area
[09:31] JoJa Dhara: so he knew how to hang his paintings in reallife
[09:31] JoJa Dhara: and that done in a day so amazing..and all he has to do is copy the url and give and you be directed ..without download going through long halls of tutor etc
[09:32] Claudia LAmoreaux: (Does anyone have landmark for Patrick Moya’s work in SL?)
[09:32] JoJa Dhara: so this can show quickly as I say .what yu have been done for years…in other worlds
[09:32] Carl Solutionary (carlicann): May I contribute something?
[09:33] JoJa Dhara: therefore it will be a mission and goal to explain how to create in MEsh and how you can market yourself further
[09:33] JoJa Dhara: with machinima … with content and a story line as Flufee
[09:33] JoJa Dhara: yes Carlicann
[09:33] Carl Solutionary (carlicann): There is yet another artist coalition doing a big event this fall… IMAB http://intergrid-metaverse-art-2012.hypergrid.org/ IMAB creators produced 4 RL books… also free online… amazing histories of SL and opensim artists… They’ve done multiple mixed reality events in Paris in RL …. I am involved through the new rock opera The Change as an actor/dancer…. They are in operation now through December… I suggest you collaborate with them
[09:34] JoJa Dhara: Thank you!!
[09:34] Carl Solutionary (carlicann): like cross list your events and vice versa
[09:34] Claudia LAmoreaux: Thanks, Carl. Good do know about.
[09:34] JoJa Dhara: definate
[09:35] JoJa Dhara: honest I hope we can continue like this and spread out more and show the outworld… how powerfull virtual worlds can be…and that will always be my mission..specially to see people grow in it… it is amazing…..
[09:36] JoJa Dhara: that is all i have to say..before I take hours and hours πŸ˜‰
