Learn about Archeology Island on ScienceSim at this Friday’s NPC Meeting

archeology island on ScienceSim

For you educators and archeology buffs, we’ve got a special treat. Ms. Marion Smeltzer of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania will be at this Friday’s Nonprofit Commons to talk about the sim she built called Archeology Island on the ScienceSim (opensim) virtual platform.

Archaeology Island consists of virtualizations of archaeological sites investigated by faculty members in the IUP , including a Monongahela Village, a Roman site in Cyprus, an underwater shipwreck, a Maya site in Belize , and the Laurel Hill /Brown farm, was the site of an antebellum community of former slaves. Come find out how these recreations are being used to further research and education at IUP.

That’s this Friday, April 6, starting at 8:30am PT at the Plush Nonprofit Commons amphitheater. See you then!

[08:44] Kavon Zenovka: Okay – we were asked for an update.
[08:44] Kavon Zenovka: We’re still actually working on the overall numbers.
[08:44] Kavon Zenovka: Hold on
[08:45] Gentle Heron: /me waits to see how these two magicians can cram a 3 day conference into 10 minutes of summary.
[08:45] Kavon Zenovka: Let me tell you where we are from,
[08:45] Kavon Zenovka: Okay
[08:45] Abacus Capalini: lol
[08:45] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): 😉
[08:45] Kavon Zenovka: I’m the program chair for Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference
[08:45] Kavon Zenovka: which was held March 15 – 17th
[08:46] Abacus Capalini: I’m the co-program Chair for VWBPE and the Poster track lead and ran the awards, voting, etc. i.e. hole plugger 😀
[08:46] Kavon Zenovka: It was billed as the 5 th annual
[08:46] jacmacaire Humby: Jacques Macaire HUMANBE http://www.hiumanbe.com Action Tank and Council on Sustainable Development France and International @Humanbe
[08:46] Kavon Zenovka: but that may be a little off
[08:46] Kavon Zenovka: VWBPE seems to be more like it evolving
[08:46] Abacus Capalini: the website is http://www.vwbpe.org/
[08:46] Kavon Zenovka: from the first Second Life Best Practices held in 2007
[08:47] Kavon Zenovka: So it is a fully online conference held mainly in Second Life
[08:47] Kavon Zenovka: We have been trying to do as much as we can in other worlds.
[08:47] LilyAlyn: what was the topic of the conference?
[08:48] Kavon Zenovka: Best Practices in Education in “Virtual Worlds”
[08:48] Abacus Capalini: Be EPIC was the Theme this year
[08:48] Kavon Zenovka: So we also did OpenSim grids
[08:48] Kavon Zenovka: World of Warcraft
[08:48] Kavon Zenovka: Club Penguin
[08:48] Kavon Zenovka: Minecraft
[08:49] Kavon Zenovka: and we have a raincheck for Eve Online which we hope to do within the month
[08:49] Kavon Zenovka: The conference ran for 3 days
[08:49] Abacus Capalini: While the event is hosted in SL we are looking for Education Best Practices in all virtual environments
[08:49] Kavon Zenovka: We do not run 24/7
[08:49] Kavon Zenovka: We found that there is a dead zone that we don’t get participants in
[08:50] Kavon Zenovka: whispers: Thats from 11 pm SL to about 3 am SLT
[08:50] Abacus Capalini: We did 36.5 hours of programming over the 3 days
[08:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): a 24 hour conference for several days sounds very ambitious anyway
[08:50] Kavon Zenovka: We based that on the numbers from previous conferences
[08:50] Kavon Zenovka: and that’s something else
[08:50] Kavon Zenovka: it’s all volunteer
[08:50] Kavon Zenovka: something you know very well
[08:50] DJ Earnshaw: besides the volunteers need time to rest
[08:50] Gentle Heron: indeed!
[08:51] Kavon Zenovka: and it is really based on the volunteers we get
[08:51] Abacus Capalini: lol.. yes DJ. 😀
[08:51] Kavon Zenovka: In previous years we had specific language tracks
[08:51] LilyAlyn: so all who attend are considered volunteers?
[08:51] Abacus Capalini: and our transcription team .. Thanks again to Gentle and her crew 😀
[08:51] Zinnia Zauber: It is an amazing event and always wonderful to participate and work with such pros!
[08:51] Gentle Heron: LilyAlyn- the workers are volunteers, the workers and organizers and presenters
[08:51] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): (I’d encourage a study of the conference program, there’s great stuff in there and it’s possible to track down some of the content)
[08:51] Brena Benoir: Yay Gentle!
[08:51] Kavon Zenovka: and we will have them as long as we get volunteers who can review and coordinatre in those languages
[08:52] Kavon Zenovka: We’re not pros.
[08:52] Kavon Zenovka: We know our mistakes a little too well.
[08:52] Abacus Capalini: The event was also livestreamed by Treet.tv and will be up as an archive, but we don’t have an exact date yet 😀
[08:52] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): volunteers did an outstanding job pulling the whole thing together… it was a great experience as an atendee
[08:52] LilyAlyn: who are some examples of people who present?
[08:53] Zinnia Zauber: You are! We get to meet so many wonderful educators and get to share our knowhow!
[08:53] Abacus Capalini: Last year (2011) we had 2,447 unique avies attend over the 3 days
[08:53] Kavon Zenovka: Well we did solicit our Keynotes
[08:53] Kavon Zenovka: so openign keynote was Marianee Maelstrom – Knowclue Kidd
[08:53] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): I’m eagerly awaiting the archive 🙂
[08:53] Abacus Capalini: The program can be found at: http://vwbpe12.vwbpe.org/
[08:53] Kavon Zenovka: then we had Peggy SHeehy and Lucas Gillespie from WoW in School
[08:53] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): love those guys!
[08:54] Kavon Zenovka: then Lisa Dawley and Chris Haskell from 3D Games Lab
[08:54] Kavon Zenovka: as the Thursday opening keynotes
[08:54] LilyAlyn: wow! that’s so interesting
[08:54] Abacus Capalini: We also had Dr. Dede talking about his groups foray into Augmented Reality
[08:54] Kavon Zenovka: on Friday it was Maria Korolov, Dr. Chris Dede and then Gord Holden
[08:54] Gentle Heron: not just talk about, but lots of modeling and hands-on experiences!
[08:55] Kavon Zenovka: Saturday – Sharon Bowers who is doing amazign work with 40 worlds in Activeworlds
[08:55] Abacus Capalini: Dr. Dede teaches at Harvard and focused his presentaion on their http://ecomobile.gse.harvard.edu/
[08:55] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @LilyAlyn, It gave me a real appreciation for how innovative these educators are…
[08:56] Kavon Zenovka: and then Dr, David Gibson who had us all contributing through a google doc – about 50 of us all at the same time typeing and answering questions
[08:56] Abacus Capalini: That was my favorite part D:
[08:56] Buffy Beale: and don’t forget the parade and party 🙂
[08:56] Kavon Zenovka: Yes
[08:56] Kavon Zenovka: Social was such an important part
[08:56] Abacus Capalini: crazy to see that collaboration and watch Google Docs shudder and groan under the strain to keep up 😀
[08:56] Buffy Beale: the dragon parade was soooo funny
[08:56] Kavon Zenovka: I think social was responsible for the conference feeling like a community
[08:57] Buffy Beale: I think it worked Kavon
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we have time for a couple of questions, if there are any
[08:57] Kavon Zenovka: oh and BotGirl’s alt was our pre-awards show
[08:57] Kavon Zenovka: We lightened it up because I think all of our heads were about to explode.
[08:58] Kavon Zenovka: Then we had our awards ceremony
[08:58] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): So there was such a rich environment for interesting dialogue
[08:58] Buffy Beale: Question: are the sims still up to visit, the poster sessions were amazing
[08:58] Kavon Zenovka: We had 2 contest during the conf
[08:58] Abacus Capalini: We also had some speakers from the Smithsonian Institute and their exploration of building in SL as an extension of their Latino Studies program
[08:58] Kavon Zenovka: Yes – please come over
[08:58] Kavon Zenovka: Posters are up until APril 1
[08:58] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): … in many ways it was what might hope a conference experience might be
[08:59] Kavon Zenovka: and we are having a Volunteer Appreciation evening tomorrow
[08:59] Abacus Capalini: Posters will be up until the 1st, they are over on EduCommons Alpha and Bravo
[08:59] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): that’s fantastic

[09:07] Amytron Helendale: Yes, of course

[09:07] Glitteractica Cookie: She just answered that
[09:07] BELOVEDROX: Thanks
[09:08] Amytron Helendale: Great question – part of making the conference accessible is offering it online so not everyone has to come to SF. For those in person, we have support for people who have told us about any accessibility needs.
[09:08] BELOVEDROX: I know I just the answer
[09:08] BELOVEDROX: Thank you so much.

[09:10] Amytron Helendale: Glitteractica – great! 🙂
[09:10] Glitteractica Cookie: In Kenzo, can you chat with me about that today?

[09:12] Namaara MacMoragh: Yay Nathan!
[09:12] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Thanks for taking the time to be with us today Nathan
[09:13] nathanmaton: Thanks for rezzing in today and I’m excited to be here
[09:13] Hour Destiny: What’s 4See?
[09:13] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): He’s here to talk to us about his very interesting game project
[09:13] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lets find out!
[09:13] nathanmaton: Indeed!
[09:13] nathanmaton: Ok, so first a disclosure
[09:13] nathanmaton: This presentation will require lots of hand raising, get your fingers on your hand raising button.
[09:14] nathanmaton: This presentation will require lots of hand raising, get your fingers on your hand raising button. Also let me know and feel free to interrupt as I explain it
[09:14] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (shoot I don’t know where my gestures are on this new SL viewer)
[09:14] nathanmaton: First as a bit of background…
[09:14] nathanmaton: I work with Jane McGonigal and help her run Gameful.org, formerly consulted with E-Line media and write about educational games for Mindshift
[09:14] nathanmaton: Ok, now about 4see
[09:14] Coughran Mayo: /me loves Jane McGonigal
[09:14] nathanmaton: Take a second to place yourself back in your high school and college experience
[09:14] Glitteractica Cookie: who doesn’t??! Everyone does
[09:15] nathanmaton: Remember a group project you worked on in a club or class?
[09:15] nathanmaton: Was there one person doing 90% of the work?
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): usually me
[09:15] Coughran Mayo: me
[09:15] Red (talkwithmarie): hmm yes
[09:15] nathanmaton: Did anyone have a clue what their role on a project was or did you all overlap?
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lol
[09:15] Coughran Mayo: lol
[09:15] nathanmaton: Raise your hand if you can recall a class like that. Now raise your hand if you were the one doing the 90% of the work.
[09:15] Hour Destiny: For some reason, I think of Buffy Beale whenever www.gameful.org comes to my attention. 🙂
[09:15] Brique Topaz – Feed a Smile (brique.topaz): ¬∞Õú¬∞ hmmm guess who…
[09:15] Red (talkwithmarie): 98%
[09:15] nathanmaton: hah
[09:15] nathanmaton: 98% :0
[09:16] nathanmaton: We’re making a game to help youth learn team work
[09:16] nathanmaton: There’ve been some amazing examples from game based learning scenarios
[09:16] nathanmaton: by Lee Scheldon (Multiplayer Classroom) and Roger Travis (Pratomime) where the game scenario greatly helped the team work and role separation.
[09:16] nathanmaton: As I’m sure many of you already know!
[09:16] nathanmaton: How many of you have researched team work in virtual words?
[09:17] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): /me raises hand
[09:17] Buffy Beale: lol Hour yes I was very active on Gameful when it started up 🙂
[09:17] Gentle Heron: /me raises BOTH hands
[09:17] nathanmaton: Now let’s turn to what we’re hoping to use this game for.
[09:17] nathanmaton: Raise your hand if your non-profit helps better a local community near you.
[09:17] Sister Abeyante: /me raises hand
[09:18] Buffy Beale: raises hand
[09:18] nathanmaton: how many of you started doing something similar when you were a teenager?
[09:18] nathanmaton: There’s strong research showing that our societal values are formed heavily in our teenage years
[09:18] Hour Destiny: I help a nonprofit that helps the local community.
[09:18] Sister Abeyante: yes
[09:18] Veri Oddfellow: *raises hand*
[09:18] nathanmaton: and that success at a moment when we do something abnormal and work on a project to change our community is pivotal in shaping our values to include civics.
[09:18] nathanmaton: We work with a small non-profit in DC that runs these trainings.
[09:18] nathanmaton: Learn Serve International
[09:18] nathanmaton: They don’t have the capacity to track each team after their program ends.
[09:19] nathanmaton: One group had a young woman from an incarcerated family want to help other kids like her make it through school.
[09:19] nathanmaton: She started a scholarship fund but her partner and her just couldn’t work well together.
[09:19] nathanmaton: 3 years later she’s still struggling towards her goal but needs the team building training as her organization is her and adult advisors who don’t have the time to pitch in what she needs.
[09:19] nathanmaton: We’ve heard dozens of examples like this
[09:20] nathanmaton: So we did some research and found there’s some amazing methodologies out there for teaching these team skills
[09:20] nathanmaton: The one we’ve selected
[09:20] nathanmaton: researched by Marshall Ganz and Ruth Wageman at harvard and talked to Marshall about our project (he architected Obama’s organizing strategy in 2008).
[09:20] nathanmaton: It includes 5 core tenants:
[09:20] nathanmaton: 1) Find diverse team members
[09:20] nathanmaton: 2) Find a common purpose
[09:20] nathanmaton: 3) Clear Boundaries
[09:20] nathanmaton: 4) Clear Roles
[09:20] nathanmaton: 5) Explicit norms
[09:21] nathanmaton: We’re building two game modes to teach these skills
[09:21] nathanmaton: In single player the focus is around two of the five main components of working well as a team:
[09:21] nathanmaton: 1) Have diverse team members and
[09:21] nathanmaton: and finding a common purpose
[09:21] nathanmaton: The players will be given problems and have to meet potential team mates and decide which ones to choose.
[09:21] nathanmaton: They’ll learn a lot more about the players after picking when we show their personalities in addition to their pitches
[09:22] nathanmaton: Then we also are building a multiplayer mode for the other 3
[09:22] nathanmaton: The multiplayer mode will work with 4-12 people and they’ll be put into fictional scenarios and have to solve some problem.
[09:22] nathanmaton: The first scenario we’ve built out is around changing a food policy in a school and we’ve been talking to students, teachers, non-profit professionals and school administrators to build it out.
[09:22] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): very cool
[09:22] nathanmaton: In these scenarios the teams will be trying to get high scores, finishing it faster and with more complete results.
[09:23] Buffy Beale: that’s fantastic
[09:23] nathanmaton: Each scenario will have multiple levels of increasing complexity and will require more and more complex roles.
[09:23] Veri Oddfellow: /applause
[09:23] nathanmaton: For example, in the most basic scenario the person who is the coordinator won’t be able to move but will be able to talk with each of the other players via chat.
[09:23] nathanmaton: and so on…
[09:23] nathanmaton: We’re pretty stoked to be doing this
[09:23] nathanmaton: we’ve got a lot of educators jazzed about the idea
[09:24] nathanmaton: and are running a Kickstarter campaign to help us focus on this project
[09:24] nathanmaton: We need to reach more teachers and educators and non-profits like you to make it happen
[09:24] Veri Oddfellow: Would it be good to send you funding opportunities, too, Nathan?
[09:25] nathanmaton: We’re asking for your support to help us get the word out if this sounds up your alley
[09:25] nathanmaton: And other funding opportunities are definitely great veri 🙂
[09:25] nathanmaton: Aside from creating more employees for you in the future, what’s in it for you now?
[09:25] Hour Destiny: Any interest in doing a SimNonprofit game?
[09:25] nathanmaton: We’re considering doing custom scenarios based off of non-profit’s real work.
[09:25] nathanmaton: and yes hour destiny we’ve been talking to a few folks on second life about a sim nonprofit game
[09:26] nathanmaton: So if this is up your alley please let me know
[09:26] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): (hmmm a game about the process of establishing a non-profit?)
[09:26] Hour Destiny: It is. Been planning to mindmap such a thing.
[09:26] nathanmaton: and if you have suggestions, feedback etc please reachout to me here or on twitter or via email
[09:26] Sister Abeyante: If a nonprofit wanted to contract with you for design of a game, how would that occur?
[09:26] Buffy Beale: I’m interested Nate and will contact you
[09:26] Hour Destiny: Jerry, yes. I’ve been thinking about it for months.
[09:26] nathanmaton: Here’s a link to our KS page – http://j.mp/zR3TJB
[09:27] nathanmaton: we’ve got some levels on there for non-profits
[09:27] nathanmaton: and we’re also open to talking via email
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So for those who have never developed a game before, is that 16K figure you need covering what?
[09:27] nathanmaton: I’m nate.maton@gmail.com
[09:27] Veri Oddfellow: Great presentation Nathan, I’m in! Let’s sit down and meet and go over some more ways I can be of assistance, eh?
[09:27] nathanmaton: @Rik the 16k goes to getting an artist, designer and developer to spend all day every day to make this happen
[09:28] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so consultant time, essentially, got it
[09:28] LilyAlyn: how do you make a living off this?
[09:28] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): is that in the ballpark for a simple online game to develop? that sounds pretty reasonable
[09:28] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Hour, great idea! 🙂
[09:28] LilyAlyn: how could they spend all day every day doing it but still be a non-profit?
[09:28] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): LilyAlyn, people still need to eat!
[09:29] nathanmaton: We make a living by doing all sorts of periphery things to this, we hope that foundations and non-profits will find this of value and support it as it grows
[09:29] Hour Destiny: http://www1.networkforgood.org/for-nonprofits
[09:29] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Nonprofit doesn’t mean people who work don’t get renumerated for their work
[09:30] nathanmaton: any other questions? Did I miss something?
[09:30] Gentle Heron: Volunteer means that, Rik!
[09:30] LilyAlyn: educate me lol. i dont know much about non profit work
[09:30] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): 🙂
[09:30] Veri Oddfellow: Keep up the good work, Nathan! Sounds tremendous!
[09:30] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): Volunteers get renumerated in social capital 😉
[09:30] nathanmaton: Thanks so much for rezzing in to talk about this
[09:31] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): thanks Nathan!
[09:31] Buffy Beale: Nathan you are amazing and all your work at Gameful too but yay so happy to see you here remember how long ago I talked about it to you lol
[09:31] Red (talkwithmarie): Thanks nathan! Awesome!
[09:31] nathanmaton: We’re also looking for researchers if anyone is interested in helping us figure out the effects this will have
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): For sure nathan, best of luck
[09:31] nathanmaton: @ Buffy so glad to hear from ya!
[09:31] Veri Oddfellow: /applause
[09:31] Coughran Mayo: I tried to buy dinner with a bunch of gratitude someone had given me
[09:31] Buffy Beale: 🙂
[09:31] Zinnia Zauber: Thank you!
[09:31] Coughran Mayo: didn’t work
[09:31] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Coughran, 😉
[09:31] nathanmaton: and thanks Rik for inviting me here 🙂
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Are there other examples of serious games on similar subjects youcan recommend us to check out?
[09:31] nathanmaton: last time I saw you you were a dragon avatar
[09:31] Jen (jenelle.levenque): You went to the wrong place Coughran
[09:31] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lol
[09:32] nathanmaton: I’d recommend looking at what Kevin Ballestrini is doing with his latin class
[09:32] nathanmaton: errr give me a second to find that article
[09:32] nathanmaton: http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2011/11/can-an-online-game-crack-the-cod…
[09:33] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): @Coughran & @Jen, Technically, Jen’s correct… you tried to spend that currency someplace that didn’t recognize it 🙂
[09:33] nathanmaton: and look at what Lee Scheldon is doing. I’ve talked to their students and they said team work has never been like this before.
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): sweet! We had Games for Change here in February
[09:34] nathanmaton: I saw 🙂
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): let’s here it for Nathan
[09:34] nathanmaton: Thanks!
[09:34] Hour Destiny: You can get a license to HeroEngine for free and use it for your game. It’s a MMO engine used for Star Wars, the Old Republic (SWTOR). Allows you to collobrate/build in real time with others. Have a license to it myself.
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I personally want to play his game so I can learn how to work in teams!
[09:34] Veri Oddfellow: Yah … go Nathan!
[09:34] Buffy Beale: Great talk Nate thanks you rock it and lol I still can’t believe how small a world it is 🙂
[09:35] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): heh, I get a sense you’re already levelled up pretty for on that stat, Rik 🙂
[09:35] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): *far
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): we’ll also blog about this meeting for those that weren’t here to learn about “4See”
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ok folks we are at the Open Mic / Announcement portion of our meeting
[09:36] nathanmaton: @Buffy aw shucks it is a small world

[09:47] Gentle Heron: well not just me, Rik
[09:47] Gentle Heron: We’re coming toward the end of Brain Injury Awareness Month. We’ve had some amazingly informative and inspiring presentations. I want to thank NonProfit Commons colleagues Chad at NSIP and the wonderful ladies at JAN for participating in this collaborative effort.
[09:47] Gentle Heron: Two more presentations later today, if you have time to attend:
[09:48] Gentle Heron: Noon pm SLT- Anya Ibor (Fearless Nation PTSD peer support group leader) talks about “Brain Plasticity” at Etopia.
[09:48] Gentle Heron: 4pm SLT- Eve Maven (social work professor from Valdosta) talks about “TBI: The Signature Injury of Modern Warfare” and its implications for wounded warriors, their families, and their communities. This will be at Virtual Ability’s Sojourner Auditorium. I can give you a notecard about these two events today.
[09:48] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Anya has also been doing her presentations in the SpotON3D grid too
[09:48] BELOVEDROX: NSIP was happy to participate Thank you Gentle
[09:48] Gentle Heron: The closing ceremony for this month of events will be tomorrow, 9am to 3pm SLT at Etopia. Join us at Etopia Island for music, food, and fun as we celebrate the achievements and stories of individuals with brain injuries. For information on this gala event, please speak with Namaara MacMoragh
[09:49] Gentle Heron: (Namaara is hiding in the back here this morning.)
[09:49] Gentle Heron: And on a different (though of course related) topic, we will be viewing and then discussing a TED Talk by runner Aimee Mullins on the definition of “disability.” That will occur Sunday April 1 at 2pm and Monday April 2 and 11am both SLT on Virtual Ability island. We hope you can join us for these facilitated discussions.
[09:49] Buffy Beale: lol hiii Namaara I see you
[09:49] Gentle Heron: These TED Talk discussions are new for us. Please help us make them a success.
[09:49] Gentle Heron: (that’s all)
[09:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Thanks Gentle
[09:49] Chad Mikado: Thanks!
[09:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I ws thinking a facilitated TED Talk video showing / discussion thinggee here in the NPC might be great
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): if someone wanted to take on that idea
[09:50] Glitteractica Cookie: yes, i agree
[09:50] Zotarah Shepherd: I like the TED Talks I have seen
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I often want to talk with people after watching them
[09:50] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): wow, you’d doing your own TEDx in SL?
[09:50] Gentle Heron: Yes, that’s what we thought it might be like, Jerry.
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thats a fun idea too
[09:50] Zotarah Shepherd: Great idea
[09:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I was thinking of more of a regular video night here
[09:50] Gentle Heron: We have some folks who are prepared to facilitate the discussion.
[09:50] Glitteractica Cookie: we should talk to the Linden folks on that idea
[09:50] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): brilliant!
[09:51] Veri Oddfellow: Excellent idea … at least for streaming, but better if it was mixed reality
[09:51] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): anyway, this is your community, so anything you want to try and launch , we are all ears
[09:51] Jerry Buchko (jerrybuchko): regular video night would also be good idea
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): welcome to SL xandino13
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): ok I think that wraps it up
[09:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Mentors meeting after this?
[09:52] Glitteractica Cookie: bye all
[09:52] Glitteractica Cookie: thanks again

Positive Work Being Done in Second Life & Other Virtual Worlds

One of the efforts the Mentors group has been focused on these last few weeks has been on this project of collecting news and other interesting items that would reflect the kinds of positive work being done in Second Life and other virtual worlds settings. The idea has been to then share this perspective with the world at large in order to help balance out the general image presented by popular media, which tends more often to focus on Second Life and virtual worlds as places for purely recreational gaming or which tends to take a perspective that perhaps highlights more potentially sensationalistic pursuits, like virtual sex.

So as part of this effort by the Mentors group over the last several weeks, I’ve been gathering items I thought were especially interesting from this standpoint to share. As I collected and began to study the items that caught my attention, I realized they were falling into three general categories for me…

First Category: Items Focused on How People Think of and Behave Towards the Virtual & One Another.

These items provide opportunities for exploring and perhaps changing how we perceive & understand virtual spaces, as well as opportunities to consider how we relate to one another both concerning virtual spaces and within them. These are topics I find especially interesting to consider given my intrinsic interests in the social sciences, philosophy, and the human experience.

Second Category: Items about Second Life Being Used to Help & Empower Others and for Self-Development.

Third Category: Items about Second Life Being Used for Education & Learning:

Finding and studying these examples has really opened my eyes to the kind of creative thought and innovative, constructive work being done in virtual settings. As I’ve encountered and studied these items, I’ve also shared them with friends & colleagues as well as with others in the broader social network environments I inhabit.

I hope that you’ll find some of these items as interesting as I did and also consider sharing them with others. And speaking of sharing, if you’ve encountered similar news or other similarly interesting items I would invite you to please share them with us here!

P.S. I’m realizing in hindsight that I’ve entirely missed items related to the arts, which is a glaring omission! From my own experience, I know that Second Life has a great deal to offer in this area of endeavor as well, so there must be news or other items out there highlighting some of the incredibly creative work being done; I would personally be grateful if people could also share items related to the arts and making a difference.

[08:48] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Ok, awesome
[08:48] Buffy Beale: cheering for Jerry!
[08:49] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): So we’ve been focused these last few weeks
[08:49] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): on this project of collecting news & other interesting items
[08:49] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): that would help reflect the kinds of postive work that’s being done
[08:49] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): in SL & other virtual world settings
[08:50] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): The idea has been to share this perspective with the world at large
[08:50] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): to help balance out the media image of SL
[08:50] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): as a place primarily inhabited by vampire role players
[08:51] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): and virtual sex
[08:51] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): or vampire role players having virtual sex… 😉
[08:51] Buffy Beale: lol
[08:51] Red (talkwithmarie): oh
[08:51] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): So over the last several weeks I’ve been gathering some items I thought were especially interesting from this standpoint to share
[08:51] globalkids Bixby: Second Life: It’s not just for vampire role players having sex anymore…
[08:52] Lyr Lobo: /me chuckles and nods
[08:52] Lotta Flux: giggles
[08:52] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): And as I collected them, I realized they were falling into three basic categories
[08:52] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): and I’ll share these items within these categories now
[08:52] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): First category: How People Think & Behave ~ the Virtual & One Another (Exploring & perhaps changing how we perceive virtual spaces & relate):
[08:53] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): * TEDxVictoria – Alexandra Samuel: Ten Reasons to Stop Apologizing for your Online Life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui2ZwO-efo0

http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ahci/2011/684202/
[08:54] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Alexandra Samuel is a blogger I’ve begun to follow who writes about virtual worlds among other things, and I think she does some work that is especially accessible.
[08:54] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): The second 2 items a bit more cerebral but still fascinating, having to do with examining this distinction people commonly have between the “real” & “virtual”
[08:55] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): All these can help people to perhaps think differently about VW settings…
[08:55] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (might need to speed up, in light of our agenda. Sorry.)
[08:55] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Righto!
[08:55] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Here it comes.. 😉

* Second Life as an Archaeological Tool (Podcast 5): http://ncptt.nps.gov/second-life-as-an-archaeological-tool/
[08:56] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): Thanks to Gentle Heron, I was able to attend at least the last 2 days of the VWBPE
[08:57] Gentle Heron: VWBPE is an amazing event!

[09:08] Buffy Beale: take care thanks for all you do Lyr, you’re one who brings validity to Second Life 🙂
[09:08] globalkids Bixby: Hello Rik,

[09:08] Buffy Beale: yayy the bee is back
[09:08] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): take care Lyr!
[09:08] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Let’s welcome Barry Joseph of Global Kids!
[09:08] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): awesome bee suit
[09:08] globalkids Bixby: It’s always great to be back at the NPC
[09:09] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): (i love gestures… 🙂
[09:09] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): We invited Barry back to tell us about a new initiative called “Playing 4 Peace”
[09:10] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Barry, can you give us a run down of what this new challenge is?
[09:10] globalkids Bixby: Rik is going to be interviewing me (which, if you can get him to, is pretty cool)
[09:10] globalkids Bixby: Sure. Why don’t I say a few words first about GK, for those who don’t know
[09:10] globalkids Bixby: and say that you shoudl egt reay for q barage of typos
[09:10] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): 😉
[09:10] globalkids Bixby: as I decided to be more spontaneous today rarther then pre-type what i would sayt
[09:10] globalkids Bixby: Global Kids is the premier non-profit educational organization for global learning and youth development. We work to ensure that urban youth have the knowledge, skills, experiences and values they need to succeed in school, participate effectively in the democratic process, and achieve leadership in their communities and on the global stage.
[09:11] globalkids Bixby: My area, the Online Leadership Program, integrates a youth development approach and international and public policy issues into youth media programs that build digital literacy, foster substantive online dialogues, develop resources for educators, and promote civic participation.
[09:11] globalkids Bixby: About ten years ago we began to work with your youth in NYC to design video games.
[09:11] globalkids Bixby: One, Ayiti: The Cost of Life, has been played millions of times. (if you know the url, please share it)
[09:11] globalkids Bixby: After many years, we have diversified the program and have a wide range of youth-gaming programs: web-based, mobile, etc.
[09:12] globalkids Bixby: But the original program, Playing For Keeps, made a big shift this year, which we are really excited about
[09:12] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): http://ayiti.globalkids.org/game/
[09:12] globalkids Bixby: With funding from the AMD foundation,
[09:12] globalkids Bixby: we are working with E-Line Media, which runs Gamestar Mechanic
[09:12] globalkids Bixby: IS anyone here familiar with GM?
[09:13] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): yes
[09:13] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): 🙂
[09:13] Ozma Malibu: yes
[09:13] Rhiannon Chatnoir: /me is
[09:13] Glitteractica Cookie: I have heard of GM
[09:13] globalkids Bixby: Gamestar is a web-based tool for making web-based games, without needing to know programming. It’s pretty cool.
[09:13] globalkids Bixby: Gamestarmechanic.com
[09:14] Glitteractica Cookie: oh yes. that’s right
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: well, they run these Social Impact Game DEsign Challenges, in which youth are given a topic and asked to make a game around it
[09:13] globalkids Bixby: sustainable living. non-violence. Stuff like that
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: So this year, P4K is working with E-Line to co-design and co-run the challenge
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: The youth worked all year to become GM mastes, research social issues, and then design their own challenge
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: and the first
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: one
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: launched
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: this
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: month
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: (*cheers*)
[09:14] globalkids Bixby: The youth picked the topic of ending war and named it the Playing For Peace challenge.
[09:15] globalkids Bixby: You can see it at: http://www.tinyurl.com/playing4peace
[09:15] Jerry Buchko MA AFC: (thinking a lot of the educators at vwbpe would have probably been very interested in something like Gamestar…)
[09:15] globalkids Bixby: Over March and April, youth can go into GM, design their own game, and submit it. In May one youth will win a new laptop, with other cool prizes
[09:15] globalkids Bixby: more importantly, scores of good games will be produced, by youth, judged by youth, for youth, on the topic.
[09:15] globalkids Bixby: I am not sure if I am,,,
[09:15] Gentle HeronGentle Heron will point VWBPE organizers at GlobalKids as a potential presenter for next year’s session.
[09:16] globalkids Bixby: ooh – lost Rik
[09:16] globalkids Bixby: (I will fill in the questins he might have asked)
[09:16] Lotta Flux: great idea, Gentle
[09:16] globalkids Bixby: I am not sure if I am support to tell you this but, well, let me ask you first.
[09:16] globalkids Bixby: Over two months, how many game submissons do you think we should expect?
[09:16] globalkids Bixby: Just shout it out
[09:17] 5,000
[09:17] Barry has presented in previous years at VWBPE
[09:17] @Gentle, Yes, great idea
[09:17] Lotta Flux: a ginormous amount 🙂
[09:17] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): 200?
[09:17] Ozma Malibu: 20?
[09:17] Coughran Mayo: it’s the interwebs….5,000 is nothing
[09:17] globalkids Bixby: We had hoped to have more than 500, after two months.
[09:17] Lotta Flux: ooh, you wil
[09:17] globalkids Bixby: But after just two weeks, we already have 400 entries, with 6 weeks to go
[09:17] Lotta Flux: will*
[09:17] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): nice!
[09:17] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): wow!
[09:17] Buffy Beale: wow!
[09:18] Rhiannon Chatnoir: and you can read up on a lot of the ongoing work that Barry and others at OLP at Global Kids have done through the years on their blog http://olpglobalkids.org
[09:18] Lotta Flux: yep!
[09:18] Ozma Malibu: wow
[09:18] globalkids Bixby: In any case, as you can imagine, the youth are both excited and a little overwhelmed at the possibilies.
[09:18] Lotta Flux: ginormous 🙂
[09:18] globalkids Bixby: The youth also will present publically about it – they will be talking this Tuesday in NYC at a teacher meet-up about their work in the program, and next month a tthe annual Global Kids confernece.
[09:18] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): that’s awesome
[09:18] Lotta Flux: judging will be difficult
[09:18] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): i’ll bet
[09:19] globalkids Bixby: Also, to support the Challenge, they created a sample game about two countries at war over war – driven by the elites- and the player/protaganist who unites the masses to end the war
[09:19] globalkids Bixby: So that’s essentially the overview. There WILL be a second challenge. But I am not sure if you all want to know the topic just yet…
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): YES!
[09:19] globalkids Bixby: Okay, Twist my arm.
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): please please please
[09:20] globalkids Bixby: The general topic is about how we are affected
[09:20] globalkids Bixby: by media – the good, the bad and the ugly.
[09:20] Lotta Flux: very interesting!
[09:20] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): hmmm interesting
[09:20] Jerry Buchko MA AFC (jerrybuchko): love it
[09:20] globalkids Bixby: But what a broad topic, right? So their challenge now is to focus it down – e.g. when is a time that wikipedia made you cry
[09:21] globalkids Bixby: and then connect that make to designing a game – design a game about a time watching youtube made you feel generous
[09:21] globalkids Bixby: You get the idea
[09:21] globalkids Bixby: Okay, that’s all I got. 🙂
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Nice!
[09:21] globalkids Bixby: What else might you like to know about the program?
[09:21] globalkids Bixby: or my life?
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Any questions about Playing 4 Peace?
[09:22] globalkids Bixby: (My 5 year old loves the new Angry Birds Space, btw…)
[09:22] Rhiannon Chatnoir: /me notices Barry has his Starax wand
[09:22] globalkids Bixby: wand on

[09:22] Lotta Flux: tyvm, Barry!
[09:22] globalkids Bixby: Yw, Lotta
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Can adults enter the challenge?
[09:23] globalkids Bixby: You can read more about our digital youth programs here : http://olp.globalkids.org (and, as a first annoumcenet, come back soon for a NEW web site)
[09:23] Buffy Beale: Global have you heard of the http://www.gameful.org site which is great for connecting gamers
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Seems a shame to let the kids have all the fun
[09:23] globalkids Bixby: No, only youth under 18
[09:23] Buffy Beale: and open for all ages
[09:23] globalkids Bixby: Adults have other opportunities to design games and win prizes, like JOBS. 🙂
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lol
[09:24] 01 Hifeng: xD
[09:24] globalkids Bixby: BUT we can always youth adults like those at NPC to tell other youth about the opportunity
[09:24] globalkids Bixby: BUT we can always USE adults like those at NPC to tell other youth about the opportunity
[09:24] globalkids Bixby: wand off
[09:25] Buffy Beale: lol wand off, should we back up?
[09:25] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): I’d like to be youthed global 🙂
[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): So if you have a young person in your life who loves games, direct them to this challenge where they can build their own games on something meaningful
[09:25] globalkids Bixby: Rik, always a pleasure to be by your virtual side. Thank you for inviting me and Global Kids to present today.
[09:25] InKenzo at Amoration (in.kenzo): URL again?
[09:25] globalkids Bixby: wand on

[09:25] globalkids Bixby: Aw, no exit balloons…

[09:41] Gentle Heron: Participating in research allows your knowledge to be valued as you support wider understandings. Help others and sometimes you even can earn a little extra cash. There’s a research opportunity right now posted in the Healthinfo Island Research Pavilion, only open through today, that could earn US citizens 30 US (not Linden!) dollars for a phone interview.
[09:41] Gentle Heron: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Healthinfo%20Island/112/203/30
Go inside, click the poster, and follow the directions on the notecard. (There are several specific opportunities for different populations. The one that ends today is by First Opinions.)
OR you can IM Andy Evans for a notecard.
(Free money, no free puppies)

About Barry Joseph of Global Kids

Four months after Barry Joseph was born, humans first walked on the moon. Three months later, the Internet was born. The first brought us closer to the universe while the second brought us closer to each other. Barry has been pursuing the latter ever since.

People have said many things about Barry. Oprah Winfrey once picked Barry out of a crowd (her audience, in fact) and introduced him as a man who “made a good point,” which he has been repeating ever since (the anecdote, not the point). He has been lauded as “a high-energy, engaging, successful social network nexus and entrepreneur” (unfortunately, in response to a rejected grant proposal) and, most recently, as “witty, a computer nerd, a giver, a role model, and an individual above all else” (within his high school’s alumni magazine, which has an obvious conflict of interest).

Barry is perhaps best defined by his work, which since the invention of the Web has explored the many ways this and other digital mediums can be used to address significant personal and social issues. Barry has directed the Online Leadership Program at Global Kids, Inc. since 2000, helping youth to acquire leadership skills and engage in efforts to address global issues through the production of digital media. Global Kids puts youth voices on both a local and global stage: youth-led online dialogues, video games as a form of youth media, the application of social networks for social good, the educational potential of virtual worlds like Second Life, the educational application of mobile phones and alternative assessments models, and more. At all times, Barry and Global Kids seek to combine youth leadership development and engagement with high-profile digital media projects that support 21st Century Skills and New Media Literacy development.
